yup…until he takes one good head kick! My wife called me this morning to tell me about this, I told her we’ve been talking about this for months! It’s ridiculous. Good for him for following his dreams, but come on.

I know they have specialized rules for this guy and I’m sure they will help him a little but I have to be realistic here… this guy is asking to get hurt. I dont mean to bar him due to his disabilities but to be honest his lack of reach is way to big of an issue IMO. When having an 3 inch reach disadvantage is an up hill battle for regular fighters having a 12 inch reach disadvantage would be like everest for this guy. I’m impressed at how good he did at wrestling but thats so much more different than MMA. I hope him the best of luck and for the sport I hope he loses but not by devastation. I just hope he gets knocked out and realizes the dangers he’s putting himself in.

just plain fuckin dumb.

by Jizzo on Apr 24, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Can’t knock the guy for trying to live his dream; and definatley overcome some serious barriers, but you have to question the mental stability of who’s allowing this. I haven’t followed it since it was first posted he might be in a match, but are there any special rules for his bout? Can he defend himself against strikes?

by O damn he got caught on Apr 24, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep!Good for him!Though,i was wondering the samething. Can you kick him?I mean you can’t kick a down opponent right!!

by Alpha Male 360 on Apr 24, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hes considered a downed opponent at all times

by Vettedomination666 on Apr 24, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alpha you can kick a downed opponent, just not in the head. Also they aren’t allowing knees and elbows to the head or something like that. Shoulda sent him to Japan to fight.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Apr 25, 2009 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Kyle is an inspiration to all and he would be a tremendous motivational speaker.

However, there is a diffenence between “being all you can be” and “dreaming beyond your abilities.” To fight in MMA when you clearly cannot compete on the same level as your opponent is downright dangerous. If he said he wanted to fly commercial airlines would people have the same support and tolerance? Would Larry King be interviewing him? I doubt it.

He should never be allowed to fight in a sanctioned MMA match. It would embarass Kyle and the sport. Neither need that.

by DJ on Apr 24, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Excellent post. TRUTH.

by OJR on Apr 24, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he were to fly commercial airliners, his disabilty would be endangering the lives of countless others.

Here he is endangering only himself… and the self esteem of whatever twisted fuck actually agrees to fight him.

So I dislike the analogy, but I agree that he should not be permitted to compete against an able-bodied opponent… with the possible exception of Kalib Starnes.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 24, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We are talking about the support garnered for Kyle’s “nothing can stop me” approach. With that theory, he can do anything he wants. So any analogy would work. If you won’t like mine, pick another. Same result.

Interestingly enough, from the newspaper this morning, he is fighting in Alabama, state with no regulatory commission for MMA or boxing. That tells us all what the states with sanctioning bodies think of his venture to MMA.

Until I know more about the rules of the bout, I will wait to pass judgement on wether it’s dumb or not. Either way, this kid gets my respect.

Can’t be any less exciting than A. Silva.

lol, I don’t fault him, but honestly what keeps someone from picking him up and spiking him to the mat?

There’s already a DVD?

by RyanHobbs on Apr 25, 2009 5:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve got to think that his fights will be special rules. He can’t exactly defend properly against punches and kicks. He’d also have a really hard time getting out of any kind of choke. However, I bet his strength is insane. I can’t see his MMA career going anywhere, but then again, you never know…

by JRK on Apr 24, 2009 3:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It would be fucking awesome to see him in a freak show match against Bob Sapp in japan.

Not even Fedor could get an armbar on this kid. Seriously though, NewYork wouldn’t sanction the Tim Silvia boxing match, but some commission sanctioned this. I don’t want to see this kid get hurt.

I think Junie could totally take this dude.

by robthom on Apr 24, 2009 6:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m totally confused by this. How could this guy possibly do MMA? I don’t see how he could punch, or kick. And what about blocking punches and kicks? He would be at a severe reach disadvantage vs any striker. On the ground I guess he’d be hard to submit, except for RNC, but what other sub could you put on him? No armbar, heel hooks, leg locks, kimura, etc. He would have a bit of an advantage in that area. But I just don’t see how he could fight even the worst MMA fighter.

by Caknakker on Apr 24, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hes considered a downed opponent at all time, so head kicks and knees are out of the question. I think he’s fighting at 135.

My mom always told me that if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all, so I am just going to keep my thoughts to myself and shut my mouth… lol honestly

This is a complete mis-representation of what Mixed Martial Arts really is.
Think of it…his whole gameplan is to get the opponent on the ground. However, unlike wrestling, while on the ground he’ll be catching elbws/fists to his face, head etc., he’ll be punched in the ribs none of which he can’t block at all and that’s only the begining. He can’t really posture up to effectivly ground and pound so what is he going to do?
Next, he can’t pull guard (no legs) so he’ll basically be mounted the entire time. He’ll ultimately give up his back, due to the barrage of blows to his exposed face, and he’ll have no defense at all from that point.
Additionally, his opponent has no chance at any limb submission moves putting him at a disadvantage of sorts. But with that, Kyle has no hands. No means to grasp/engage his opponent thus eliminating submissions of any kind of his doing.
I admire his courage but courage does not equate to reality. One might have the courage to ride a bull for 8 seconds because they’ve ridden on a mechanical bull at the bar but in reality they’d last 1/2 a second and probably end up getting hurt really badly. And, realistically, no one would ever let that happen because of the danger involved. Well, the same level of danger exists here.
This should not happen and it is a total disgrace to the sport so many of us have come to love.

FYI…Yahoo! did a good write up on the rules of the fight etc. on their MMA page.

I just hope Kyle don’t get caught in kneebar, armbar, kimura… think of losing a fight on any of those or similar moves when you don’t got whole arms and legs.

I wouldn’t bet against this guy if he was facing Junie Browning though.

by JonnyBoy on Apr 25, 2009 7:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

First of all I am an amputee, BK. (Below the knee). I still train people to fight and train people to defend themselves. I do know what my limitations are however. I don’t limit my life to where I don’t do what I want but MMA fights are out of the question. I have to agree sadly for once that this type of bout should not be permitted without another amputee. This would ensure the safety and character of all involved. Kyle is still an inspiration he could have been severely hurt during this but he did not care and everyone should look at that and just once after they watch this not make fun of amputees or physically challenged people. We are very strong in comparison and it’s not funny. Kyle is a very brave person and I do admire him for his efforts. Until there is a clause for amputees however maybe he should just train and assist much like we do.
