UFC Quick Quote: Dana White ready for a war on Chuck Liddell retirement issue

"Chuck Liddell is stupid rich. Chuck Liddell is done. He’s got nothing left to prove. He’s the most famous guy on Earth. I love him like a fucking brother and I don’t want to see him get hurt. There is no reason for it. He’s fucking 40 years old man. These guys that are fighting now are young, explosive, fast fucking kids who are well rounded mixed martial artists. There’s no fucking reason for Chuck Liddell to be out there at 40 years old still fighting. I don’t want to make a fucking nickel off that ever. Believe me, it will be a fucking war if he tries not to retire, believe me. I love him. He helped me build this business. We started when he was making five hundred and five hundred. And we had the dream of him becoming a big star and winning the title and making all kinds of money. We did it all man. We fucking did it all. We did it. We did it. It’s fucking over. He’s 40 years old, it is over. It was amazing that he was able to fight until he was 40. That’s what a bad motherfucker he was. He has nothing to prove to anybody, period. It’s over. We did everything that we set out to do. It has been an amazing run, its been fun. We did it together, we stayed loyal to each other the whole time and we did everything that we hoped to do and now its over. He can do it financially. And plus, I’m going to bring him into the organization in some other way and he’s still going to make money. He’s been loyal to me and I’ve been loyal to him and that’s not going to change now that he’s retiring. He’ll always be a part of the organization. He’ll take on another role, he’ll still make money and he’ll be with me until the day we die.... I always say is that I’ve built this business using the blueprint of boxing, what not to do. We know that you shouldn’t be fighting past your prime, you know?"
-- UFC President Dana White provides more context via InsideFighting.com on his reasons for essentially forcing former light heavyweight champion and his good friend, Chuck Liddell, into retirement after his most recent loss (his fourth in his last five appearances) to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97: "Redemption" this past weekend. Liddell skirted the retirement talk as best he could after the bout, saying he needed a few drinks and a few days to come to a final decision. His trainer, John Hackleman, stated that Liddell would decide "in the next week" or so. The plot thickens ...

thanks in advance mania!
Alright guys, I see a lot of old faces and newer guys talking about 101. We are planning a mmamania trip to the event. We will be getting a luxury box (around 400 and includes food/drinks). We have about 5 seats left. Email me if interested and I’ll give you all the info.
kevjack115@yahoo.com
It will be fun to watch the fights together, and from what I’ve heard, the luxury boxes at wachovia are just above the first level and very nice. get at me!

One last fight for the Iceman!! Iceman vs Kimbo!!
Let Chuck go out in style and let the dude make some major PPV money! Most of you bloggers (and me) know that Chucky would murder him, but just think of all those other saps who think Kimbo is the real deal. Those sudo fans will pay!
Book it Dana!

i dont think he would murder him, all kimbo would need to do these days is land one punch and he would drop chuck, chuck has no chin anymore its time for him to hang em up.

It’s not about making money it’s about Chuck’s safety…I said this after the Jardine fight he has no chin left and is dangerously slow…alot of guys on here thought I was crazy….Wandy is in the same boat except he has the ability to still knock fighters out Chuck does not

can’t say I disagree with Dana!
He does definitely seem like a loyal guy!
by kevin on Apr 22, 2009 5:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dana is loyal to the people he likes,
but a business is not about making friends or even being friends with someone cause it gets in the way! It’s about being strictly proffessional and not let personal feelings get in the way.. I can’t really see Chuck working for the UFC, I wonder what kind of a role he would have in the company..

maybe off topic, but what you guys think about Fedor/Aoki April 29th.
by Alpha Male 360 on Apr 22, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
RoB,I’m not joking! It’s a rumor but here it is….:In a report released today by kamipro.com, top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will take on lightweight Shinya Aoki in a grappling match to be held on April 29th in the 3rd installment of DEEP M-1 Challenge.
While there has yet to be an official announcement and the idea of this match-up could seem a tad unbelievable, this isn’t the first time these two names have been thrown around in a potential fight. There’s no secret that Japanese promotions love to put on fights featuring their biggest stars, at times ignoring size and reason, and Fedor and Aoki are two of the biggest fan-favorites.
Luckily for us it was announced yesterday that this event will be streamed live on Japan-MMA.

I don’t buy what Dana White says, I think he’s full of shit. He doesn’t want to pay $500K to a guy who is not marketable anymore (lets face it, he would be hard to put at co-main event right now). It’s pure business for Dana, the friendship and carrying about 39 yr old Chuck is just a lame cover up. He put Randy Couture a 230lb 45 yr old guy against Brock Lesnar who weights 280lb… are you kidding me? Hey, as long as you can make a lot of money IT’S OK!! He’d a damn J… His video blogs are full of shit too, only reason he does them is to improve the public perception of him… the blog with the soldier he did was bs, he would not hang out with the guy if it wasn’t for looking good in blog.
This man is full of shit, big mount small dick.
by Hooner on Apr 23, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Based on Randy’s performances before the Lesnar fight (previous two were wins) he was pretty steady. Chuck on the other hand had lost 3 of his last 4, and was on a decline. So, I don’t think the two guys situations are equivalent. In my opinion, based on Dana’s quote, he does care about Chuck. But I don’t doubt for a second that he will do everything in his power to keep Chuck with UFC.

2 THINGS.
1. D. White should shut up for the moment on this, say these things to Liddell behind the scenes, let Chuck be the 1 to announce his retirement. If Chuck doesn’t want to retire then D. White can speak up, but for now SHUT UP on it! Let Chuck keep some dignity by not having the BOSS announce his retirement for him.
2. I can see Chuck working for the UFC if he wants to. I just don’t think it’s something he’s wants, not his style. He’s a college grad in acct, he just doesn’t articulate very well. However if he put he put his mind to it, I think he could do anything he wants, including working for the UFC.

one more thing from a proud parent!
well men, a tad off topic but I’m a proud dad. A bully threw my 7 year old down on the ground. my son said and I quote "I didn’t want to hurt him but you said not to start a fight, but not let a bully pick on me." He then punched him in the nose. Bully threw him again and my son punched him again giving him a bloody nose. Norecess for the week, but he said he feels good. I’m very pround of him!
I cashed in a poker tournament too!

dana white is a f#cking douche. if liddell wants to fight again, it’s his damn decision. he’s got one more fight left on his contract…at least let him finish his contract (if that’s what he wishes). or, if LIDDELL decides to retire, then great. but it’s his decision, not dana f’n white’s.

why? I get the impression from what I read and what I see on blogs that Dana really cares about 95% of his guys.

I completely agree. They need to set him up for some sort of an old guy nostalgia match. I think he should fight Coleman next or maybe Royce Gracie or how about a one time off fight with Sakuraba. Ooh, I have it Chuck vs. Bas Rutten!!!
by DDT on Apr 22, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am actually surprised. Chuck is still marketable. I would have thought Dana would have tried to squeeze every penny he could get out of him on PPVs while letting new talent get that one big name on their resume that moves them to the upper echelon of the division.
by NameNotRequired on Apr 22, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You have to realize one thing about Dana; he values loyalty above all else, even above money. Chuck has been completely loyal to Zuffa and Dana and that will be rewarded (to some weird extent by forcing him to retire).
by DDT on Apr 22, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I imagine they’ll pay him off to not take his last fight on his contract. Chuck knows he’s done. It’s just a little hard to swallow when Joe Rogan and Dana White appear to make the announcement for you like 2 f’n minutes after the fight. That was a little cold, but I guess they had to say what people were thinking. Chuck will make the announcement soon but he will make it on his own time. Probably at a press conference with Dana and Hackleman there.

If Chuck is to fight again, The ONLY and I mean ONLY fight it should be against is Couture or Coleman. Anyone else would be a disaster and would most likely end in the same result his last 4 fights have ended. I actually think Couture would take it this time. Chuck’s speed has demonished rapidly in the last two years. I hate to see Chuck go but I hate to see him stay at the same time. Like I said…if he’s gonna come back one more time, it has to be against one of those guys his same age.

from dana’s point of view, everyone can at least see and agree on that he dosent want to see his friend get hurt, which also shows a different side to white, a guy who wont let business interfer with friendship, cause we all know that chuck can still make him a shitload of money if he were to continue to fight! the only thing thats off is how vocal white is about this, he does need to shut up and at least give chuck that honour of been able to retire himself, the man deserves that after everything he has done!

We all know Dana speaks what is on his mind, even Chuck said that.Yes they should let Chuck say it,but what if your friends was biting off more than he can chew and is probably going to end up suffering some major damage,do you let him get his butt whipped or do you try to talk him out of it.I would try my best to talk him out of it,but thats me.Remind Chuck of all that he has accomplished in this sport and how he has helped build it into one of the biggest sports in the world. There is nothing else Chuck can do for himself or the sport except get hurt and ruin people’s memory of Chuck Liddell

I don’t get why that makes Dana a douche? Even with all the friendship stuff aside. It is not good business to have your most marketable guy getting knocked out every time out, and it’s not entirely Liddel’s decision alone. ANy org you work for has a say in when you are done. it’s not anuthing new or earth shattering. Plus at 39 it may be time to at least think about it.

Come to think of it, it is Liddel’s decision if he wants to retire from the sport of MMA, but Dana has every right to decide if he is going to retire a UFC fighter.

So you think he is going to turn his back on one of his best friends,he was not even willing to go to a different camp, because of loyalty.I personally think he should retire ,at the least say he is take a year or two off and if he gets the itch to come back then let him ,but not now, there is clearly something wrong, I do not know if it is mental or physical, but he needs to get everything checked. He clearly does have some doubt ,seeing that he went to see the motivational speaker,I forget his name the one who was in Shallow Hal

true, I thought about that right after i posted.. I would have had to edit him into the game if he wasn’t in it.. I’m curious to see how good he will be..
I’d like to see him come back to finish his career in the UFC too, so they can all be boyz again and finish on a good note, he is after all a UFC hall of famer!

by scott on Apr 22, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He should already be a hall of famer!.. It’s absurd if they don’t make him that, he’s the biggest draw and the person that has set more records than anyone at the times he fought..
that is probably why i dislike Dana the most he matched Chuck up with guys that he thought Chuck would beat all the time, I mean Rashad just because Tito had just beat him and he wanted to give Chuck a title shot for a win in that fight, and he was all over Shogun right after the Coleman fight just because of Shogun’s name recognition and shape at that time..

by RoB on Apr 22, 2009 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

Too many times in pro sports, hell all sports, athletes that are past their prime stay too long and end up getting hurt. Is money and pride worth living like Muhammad Ali with Parkinsons, Brett Favre as the interception machine, Michael Jordan a shell of his former self with the Wizards, Ken Shamrock, self explanatory.
Sometimes people need to be told and some people need to be protected from themselves. Dana (forcing)Chuck into retirement is the right move, whether you like it or not. He cant defend himself anymore and he doesn’t have “it” anymore. It’s time to call it quits while he is ahead: Healthy, rich with all his faculties working.
Thanks for the memories Chuck, you are the UFC and MMA!

obviously Randy has better wrestling skills to be able to control guys better! Chuck has a looping punch that leaves his opposite side wide open. BE had a great gif of it. I don’t think Randy should be fighting either, my guess is Nog wil be his last fight too. Nog has slowed and any top HW will kill Randy…don’t even mention Fedor!!
by kevin on Apr 22, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah but has randy lost 4 out of his last five and been finished by either a ko or tko? no. Chuch has slowed down and his chin has dissappeared. chuck has done everything he could do for the sport and he needs to have the brains to hang up the gloves, he has nothing else to prove he will go down as one of the most dominant champions in mma history.

i meant to say that chuck was knocked out or tkoed in three of those five fights, on the other hand randy is 3-2 in his last 5 fights losing 2 by ko or tko. but it seems that randy still has his speed and strength and the ability to take shots, chuck doesnt. Not everybody can fight until 46, randy is a freak of nature.

like my wife says everytime these “older” guys get in there. at about 35, give or take, your reflex time gets worse and worse. Randy should have gotten out of the way from Brocks punch and Chuck just isn’t even close to being the same. Difference is, Randy has a clinch and control (wrestling) game, Chuck really doesn’t!

by Jeff on Apr 22, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
thank you jeff!! some people are idiots, when you have done something your whole life you are not going to wanna give it up no matter what if it is something you love. Chuck Liddell loves to fight, he loves to compete but health comes first. He needs to hang up the gloves before he seriously gets hurt, if you watch him in his prime you can see how he could take anybodies best shot, not he gets clip with a ok punch and he goes down. His has speed has declined by alot and I also think his power has started to fade.
and LOkie if one of you closest friends kepting getting beat up and knocked out when he was 40 years old in a sport filled with young talented up and comers you would try to talk him into retirement especially when he has made millions and can live comfortably the rest of his life without taking unneccassary beating that quite possibly in the long will have long term health effects. Take to many blows to the head is not good for anybody look at the older boxers for example.
Dana is doing the smart thing and doing what is right for his friend whether or not chuck likes it is what is best for his well being.

I agree with Dana. Chuck is my favorite fighter and I don’t want to see him get KO’ed ever again. Chuck’s chin is glass now and it’s doesn’t matter if he still had the power and speed he had 6 years ago, if you can’t take a punch then there is no point in fighting.
I would love to see Chuck involved with the UFC PPV’s, doing some kind of commentary. Would also love to see him in some training video blogs helping guys like Forrest get ready for a fight.

Friendship really??i don’t know, but i found that real weird that Chuck still have one fight left on is contract and Dana speak for him saying that’s it’s over.Maybe that’s hiding something else.Eh!

I dont totally disagree with Dana. And lets not forget MMA has not been around long enough that we know any long term effects the fighters will have so if anything Dana, the UFC, Chuck even, should err on the side of caution.
Bring on the hate.
by WB on Apr 22, 2009 5:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No hate at all. I think for his health and his safety Chuck should hang ’em up. Regardless of how long MMA has been around any doctor worth his/her degree will tell you that getting knock out one time, let alone multiple times, is not good for your long term health.

+ a comeback fight in a year or so would get HUGE PPV buys…
That was no jab Chuck got hit with, Shogun was lunging forward.
I’d like to see Chuck fight once more but he has to be hungry and want it.
That video of him running around singing country tunes before the fight was just sad. He didn’t even act like he was sober.

come on guys, I think he was doing that on purpose for the stupid paprazzi…there cameras probably said TMZ on them so he gave them something to shoot. Maybe we are so used to Chuck being ice cold we don’t realize when he is goofing around like for instance a Rampage would…..

I can see Dana bringing him back sometime in the future, smiliar to the way they brought Gracie back to fight Hughes. That would be cool, but I don’t want to keep paying $54 twice a year to see Chuck KO’d, and I have huge respect for Liddel.
by Jrandolph on Apr 22, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dana is being a bully. Let Chuck decide when he wants to retire! If you don’t want him to fight, then cut him from the UFC, but don’t force the man to retire. If Chuck decides to retire, it should be on his own terms and not because someone told him he has to.
If Chuck still has the fire to fight, he can still do well against a lot of fighters. He is just not a top 10 guy anymore which is fine.

Now if Dana said this more intelligently would people be as pissed? His point is he does not want to see HIS FRIEND take any more punishment in the ring. Does anyone think the Pride guys (besides steroids) are usually hit or miss because they fought so many times at so many different weight classes, causing so many injuries to their body. Look at Nogueria he had a staph infection, etc.. and still fought Mir in what was his worst fight.
I think Dana just goes on tirades but his point is genuine, his loyal friend made a sh*t load of money, will have a job making a lot of money still, and he can have his health.
With Hackleman, Chuck should have definitely left him or brought in more guys after the Rampage fight but he did not evolve and that showed in his last 4 fights (3 losses).

if he only has one fight, give him forrest, or bonnar guys who are good fighters but won’t knock him out brutaly and are still top ten guys (ok maybe bonnar isnt) plus it would be ultimate fighter 1 coach vs finalist, their last chance to do this . Or he could set an example and retier, none of the other hall of famers Except severn have stoped fighting when they should have, he could once again be an example for the future fighters, i don’t mind eighter way as long as they don’t set him up agenst some young stud like Banha or jon jones, or dare i even say A. silva

how would chuck losing tarnish the ufc? it would not tarnish the ufc what so ever all it would prove is that there is only one Randy Couture and that other fighters such as chuck liddell, ken shamrock etc. need to learn when to hang up the gloves and protect their well being. MMA is not a sport for 40+ year old men, yes there are a few who continue to thrive in their old age but not many, even look at the nfl how many players are 40+ not many, physical sports take a toll on your body and you can not compete in them for your whole life especially boxing and mma in which your repeatedly get hit in the head, your hit in the head many times in training and many more in the actual fights, MMA fighters are some of the best athletes in the world and train harder than anybody else they put their bodies through hell to prepare for a fight and your body can only take so many years of hell before it tells you to shut it down and relax.

If Dana is a true friend and worried about Chuck he should talk to him in person. Not make the decision for him especially publicly. I’m not sure if Dana is worried about Chuck or the UFC name. As Chuck has been the poster boy for years. He is going all about this wrong and needs to shut his mouth.

he has talked to him in person, Dana metioned that he and chuck sat down and talked after the Rashad fight and Dana wanted him to retire then but chuck said give me one more chance and i will do everything right so that is what dana did. Also Chuck said before he makes his final decision he needs to talk to his trainers and friends and Dana and Chuck are really close friends trust me they will talk and probably already have talked.

Well, if Chuck still really wants to fight and he still has 1 fight left in his contract, then let him be. It’s not about the money. It’s about us fans. Chuck only wants to give us what we fight fans want. So I hope Dana Black would still come up with 1 more superfight with The Iceman. Otherwise, time to give it up iceboy…

dana has always been this way so why are you guys suprised??
he clearly has chucks best ineterests at heart, cos it certainly doesnt hurt the ufc if chuck continues fight. I am a huge chuck liddell fan and hurt me to see him fight on saturday, he was way slower than usual and the fact is he is not taking punches as well as he used to and it kills me to say this but its time make the smart decision chuck. The legacy you have left is there for us all, its a pity its ended the way it has but all good things come to an end!!!!
ps. chuck in his hay day wipes the floor with rashad, shogun, griffin and i still think on his day rampage!!!
a true legend of the sport, I would say however that Dana should have let chuck make the decision.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do ICEMAN!!!!!!

i agree Chuck in his day KO’s Rashad, Shogun, and Forrest, but not Rampage…he fought Rampage when he was still young, like 33 or 34 and thats when Chuck was a total bada$$ KOing everybody with punches and Rampage gave him his worst beating to date in my opinion. When Chuck talks about getting dominated in a fight, well Rampage dominated Chuck in both their fights, especially the first. He took Liddells bombs and kept coming and credit to Chuck for taking about 20 Rampage bombs and surviving and never going out cold.(1st fight). Chuck’s my favorite fighter and I hate to see him retire, but I truly think it is time for him to quit fighting. He will always be a bada$$. If anything he can take a year and a half off or something and heal his body and brain up, but I still don’t think that will help a whole lot if at all.

Dana is just stating the obvious, I think Chuck will realize it’s that time anyway. I’ve always been a fan of his, but seeing him fight again is the last thing I want to see.
As far as the approach Dana is taking….I think a true friend would have been discussing this privately with Chuck, and a couple fights ago at that.

I don’t see any other sure win fight for him to go out on top than fighting Mark Coleman. That way Chuck goes out with a win and then both their tired asses can retire.

He doesn’t really sound like he trusts Liddell. “It will be a f**king war if he tries not to retire, believe me” seems like it shouldn’t be said to the press about your friend before a peep is made by Liddell. In this interview Dana sounds like he’s just trying to convince himself that he loves Chuck, and paranoid of an ugly “1 fight left” situation.

Because they are not his friend and they still equal money….. Hello Ken Shamrock. The problem is why is he making it so open to the public? I’m hoping he is up to what I think he is and putting Chuck in a spot to fight Fedor? Chuck has stated his desire to fight Fedor and Fedor is famous for fighting ex UFC champions to gain fame? I would give Chuck the fight against Fedor anyday LOL.

The Hype Train is responsible for deluding Chuck, to a degree, by rating his KO efficacy so high, virtually making his name synonymous with a KO. I think he fell victim to it. I mean listen to Mike Goldberg praise him like he’s a Jesus KO Christ or something, and every one of his pre-fight interviews follows the “I’m just gonna knock him out” theme. I think he puts far too much gravity on going for a big KO finish that he doesn’t even bother to block. He has too much faith in his hands. A better, more technical fighter wouldn’t have gotten caught so easily by Rampage (even Rampage wouldn’t have got caught like that) and the same applies with the Shogun fight. His striking game is as one-dimensional as Tito’s takedown game.
I love Chuck, I hate when he loses. But I don’t think he should quit if he doesn’t want to. He just needs to seriously change his game plan and should work on his blocking ability first.
by Johnny Farnham on Apr 22, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I went back and watched some old Chuck fights to see him win so I could feel better and his style was basically to brawl and stuff takedowns, force the other guy to stand, and then take the other guys bombs and throw his own bombs, which used to KO guys. He hasn’t even knocked anyone down with punches in his last FIVE fights much less get a TKO or KO win. I think Chuck still hits really hard, but not as hard as he used to, that and his chin is undeniably unable to take as good of a punch that it used too. The guy used to take KO punches on the jaw and keep coming at you.

Dana just wants to control Chuck..IF UFC dosent want CHuck to fight for health reasons(justified)then dont promote him…but to block opportunities is too much…made tons of money is a LIE!! common..Chuck gets 250t to 500T or maybe sometime 750T …he’s 40 he cant live on that up to 80years…Pacquiao is getting 12 million for one fight…

Are you new to the mma scene tearer??? Chuck makes millions a fight, his fight salary is 500k plus 500k if he wins. On top of that are ppv, sponsors bonuses and so on. It has been stated more than once that chuck makes millions per fight. He is probably the richest mma fighter on the planet, my guess would be that he is easily worth $15 million, so I hardly think hes gony struggle financially!!!!
by mo on Apr 23, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah but that 12 million of pacquiao is just a fixed purse(ONE FIGHT ONLY).it dosent include the ppv share and sponsorship money as well….also when discussing numbers look at the fine print…and not base it on “your GUESS”….
15 million worth as the top mma fighter is peaunuts in the world of sports…compare it to lebron and kobe..football and baseball and tennis or F-1…mma has got to be in the bottom as far as money at—-mayweather got 40 million in total money for 1 freaking fight!!!.also ive been watching mma since ROyce gracie days…and ill tell you that Dana is a great exaggerator and dosent back it up…after 10 years of taking over the UFC its still very far from the mainstream sport that he preaches…

I didn’t read through all of the comments, so I apologize if someone said this already.
First, I think Dana does care about his friend, but it’s so much more than that. He wants Chuck to retire and not have to go through a fight with him going elsewhere. That would be ugly. It’s clear that Chuck is done (with your tactic being to take them on the chin and keep going, it’s no wonder he’s done), any fight with Chuck now will end the same way. One problem among many is that it adds to the sport’s bad image. Here is the point I haven’t seen stressed yet:
Dana can’t have his most famous star being bullied around. Dana wants to sell mucho DVD’
s of it’s main star. If Chuck keeps getting knocked out, it ruins his once great rep. Dana is protecting Chuck’s legacy.
I’m a Green Bay Packers fan. I now have a radar for a club protecting its big star…from himself!
