UFC Quick Quote: Crazy fans should not overlook Thiago Alves

"[Georges St. Pierre] probably has the toughest fight of his career coming up. Believe me crazy GSP and Canadians fans -- do not overlook Thiago Alves. This guy is mean and nasty. And that's going to be a very hard fight for him. Georges St.Pierre can’t start looking at Anderson Silva until he gets passed Thiago Alves."
-- UFC President Dana White tries to keep welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre, as well as fans and media, focused on his upcoming title defense against number one contender Thiago Alves at UFC 100 from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11. The camera panned to "Rush" several times throughout the UFC 97: "Redemption" main event this weekend, which prompted the ringside announcers to mention a possible "super fight" against middleweight champion Anderson Silva taking place sometime in the near future. St. Pierre is no stranger to that, defeating lightweight champion BJ Penn via technical knockout earlier this year. And when "The Spider" tipped the scales at a svelte 182 pounds this weekend, the Internet was abuzz with the possibility of another showdown between champions. "The Pitbull," however, might have something to say about that.

I still can’t see Pitbull gettin the better of GSP
Alves lost to Fitch and Fischer and wrestling was a big part of those losses. I know he’s ten times better since those losses but GSP still has some of the best MMA wrestling and his gameplans are outstandin
Can’t wait to see the fight, I see Alves bein one of his stiffest test due to his heavy hands

gsp will probably get a takedown sooner or later. If he is able to pass the guard of alves like he did to bj he is probably gonna win.

ok noob. so you like the attractive fighters?
Yeah, you’re right, he sucks because English wasn’t his first language. I guess Fedor, Anderson Silva, Shogun, Nogueira, Aoki all suck too. Yeehaw!

He’s ugly ya’ll. He’s no doubt in for a loss since he is ugly. You want to talk about ugly, let’s talk about the Nog brothers, Randy’s ears and Fedor’s physique. Ugliness aside, those are all great fighters as is GSP. Top 3 P4P hater.

i dont like GSP any more… i used to but now he is just boring… he still shows glimpses of his great stand up but he just seems to prefer to take the fight to the ground lie on his opponents for a bit eventually pass the guard and throw little 5 inch hammer fists for 5 rounds…. and yeah it does work it is smart but it is something i do not like seeing …. especially in a main event
before i get any replies about me bashing GSP and how i am totally wrong let me just make it clear that i’m not saying he is rubbish because he is obviously not he is a great fighter and his strategy is very smart and works for him
i hope Alves wins but it’ll be hard but not impossible… i think if there was anyone who could beat GSP at WW atm it would be him

Those bombs Penn was getting smashed with didn’t look like “five inch hammer fists” to me. And he didn’t exactly lie on top of Fitch ( undisputedly a top 5 WW) for five rounds, he kicked the crap out of him all over the octagon. I think you are confused.
by Jeremyjackson on Apr 20, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
bombs?? lmao is that why it took him 4 rounds (2 and a half of solid ground n pound) to finish penn off?? bombs haha
if he was landing these so called ‘bombs’ GSP would of finished him earlier because GSP has power
he was wearing him down with hammer fists from close range you might want to watch the fight again… he landed a few big punches a round and that is about it… that isn’t a lot considering he had the fight on the ground for the majority of the rounds
okay he didnt have him on the ground round 1 but he was on the ground for half of round 2 and the majority of 3 and 4… it doesn’t take someone who’s landing ‘bombs’ 2 and a half rounds to finish the fight
and i’ll give you the fitch fight… he dominated that on the feet and on the ground that was entertaining
by ufcaddict on Apr 20, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Um, those were bombs.
Penn has an iron chin and admitted to being essentially knocked out after the second round. It is hard to get full leverage on your shots when in half-guard.
GSP probably could have gone all out and finished him sooner but he didn’t want to risk getting arm-bar’d or triangled. He wanted to school Penn and completely dominate him to prove a point. He did just that.
by Jeremyjackson on Apr 20, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
they weren’t bombs… you just said it yourself it’s hard to get full leverage on your shots from half guard that’s why he was throwing hammer fists from close range because if he would of postured up and rained down punches bj probably would of wasted no time getting back to his feet
and i would like to see this interview of him admitting he was knocked out… i visit a lot of mma news sites everyday watch all the post fight press conferences, even visit fighters sites and have not once heard him say that
by ufcaddict on Apr 20, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whatever dude, call ‘em what you want, GSP was posturing up and throwing full power shots at Penn, and BJ’s head was literally bouncing off the mat.
As for the interview, Wiki BJ Penn and read the “challenging foir the WW title” segment… here’s an exerpt:
“Penn later admitted that he couldn’t recall anything that happened during the 3rd and 4th rounds because “I was probably borderline knocked out or something.”
I guess BJ’s famously iron jaw allowed him to be knocked silly with pitter-pat hammerfists… amazing.

Who cares! If your a GSP fan, you get to see victories. I look forward to watching this victory. I don’t think Alves is a joke in any way, but neither was Fitch. GSP will do to Alves what Machida did to Thiago Silva. i.e, make a great fighter look like he doesn’t belong there.

by ufcaddict on Apr 20, 2009 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It does NOT say that.
Penn says he could not remember the THIRD OR FOURTH rounds because he was “borderline knocked out”. He took some huge shots in the second round. I can’t believe I am even arguing this. If you think hammerfists are what damaged Penn in that fight you are delusional.

And your above posts seem to suggest that you believed he was NOT borderline knocked out… you even go so far as to question the legitimacy of my quote.
Now that you’ve seen evidence to the contrary, you not only misquote the article but have the gall to suggest that “everyone” already knew he was borderline knocked out (although it is obvious from your initial posts that you did NOT believe this to be the case).
Pretty wishy-wash argument, and I’m sure “everyone” would agree.

That was a long time ago like you say mate.
I do agree but on the flip side Alves has just beaten three of the best take down merchants in the W/W division.
If Hughes, Kos and Karo couldn’t get it to/keep it on the mat, can GSP?
Alves has the nastiest striking in the W/W division and GSP’s chin isn’t all that and you know he is going to be working the T/D defence hard at ATT.
I really fancy Alves in this one.

U guys NO where i stand! I am by far the biggest Alves supporter on this site. I really am a big fan of GSP, but you guys cant tell cause he has been matched up against other fighters that I like a lot recently.
I completely agree with Dana….People need to stop over looking Alves because he is going to BATTER GSP!!!! GSP will be the favorite, RIGHTFULLY so….but I will be betting money on Alves for sure! NO dOUBT about it!
GSP is so good that he has gone his last 2 fights without even taking any damage. He isnt used to taking the kind of beating he will have to sustain in order to beat Alves. GSP cant possibly beat Alves without taking a beating, and I honestly feel that aLVES is going to systemically pick GSP apart standing and just Brutally Batter him. its just important that Alves defend the initial takedown attempts early on…because once the beating Alves will unleash on GSP’s face, BOdy, and legs starts to accumulate it will slow down GSP’s takedown attempts, and make him a sitting duck to get DESTROYED!!!!!
GSP is tough as nails! Alves cant over commit to his strikes early on until he slows GSP down a little with Damage, because GSP will just switch levels, catch Alves off balance and take Alves down during an exchange. Alves needs to be cautious striking so that he can sprawl to the best of his ability. I think alves is the closest to being able to match GSP’s explosiveness out of all gSP’s previous opponents, and Alves might even have a strength advantage over GSP…which is something that GSP hasnt had to deal with in a very long time.
I also think its safe to say that Alves probably has a better chin then St. Pierre.
This is a very dangerous fight for GSP. As a betting man, THere arent going to be too many occasions for me to bet on an underdog in the GSP fight. GSP is simply just that damn good…BUt I honestly think Alves’s chances in this fight are really close to 50-50, and when betting on an underdog, that will provide good odds, its just to rare of an opportunity to pass up!
My Money is on the pitBull!
Has anyone seen any opening odds for this fight yet?
by john on Apr 20, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No offense John mi amigo, but the only chances Alves has in this fight is if GSP cant take him down and control him.Which is unlikely becuz Karo took him down first round, hughes took him down on top of the size advantage and the only reason kos couldnt take him down becuz most of his attempts were against the cage trying to pass under hooks.Kos should have thrown more leg kicks for damage and points in that fight but hes a pussy whos afraid to get hit.He has a way better chance on the feet than kos or anyone else and i believe if backed into a corner,if GSP uses his footwork and elusiveness correctly he can out strike Alves on the feet and possibly finish him off.

Like rashad evans said, gsp is going to dismantle alves. Ill put up 1k against anyone who thinks alves is going to win this fight. GSP spars regurlaly one after with the likes of marquardt, jardine, carwin, and rashad all fighters that would destroy alves, and the amazing thing is none of them can touch him. BELIEVE ME if rashad evans gets taken down at will by GSP, and dominated in the standup, alves wont do stand a chance. Rashad is problably around 225 in training, so alves size wont affect him, and after going up against carwin, gsp will toss alves around like a rag doll. people dont realize that gsp trains with HW olympic wrestlers, WBA champion boxers, the best BJJ in brazil, and he is the most athletic fighter in MMA. HE IS ALSO THE STRONGEST ww by far, doesnt matter if alves outweighs him, like jardine said he is stronger than most LHWs, his strenght is insane, doing millitary presses with 145lb dumbells, pullups with 200 lbs strapped to his waste, he tosses wrestlers like hughes who have gorilla strenght around like rag dolls. Alves wont win a round, he has to constantly watch for being taken down, so he cant committ to full striking. GSP will mix it up, and it will soon be like the bj fight, where alves wont know when bj is punching or taking him down. GSP is much faster and athletic than anyone whic means he improves faster than anyone. alves wont win a round.

dtotorica, great post, I don’t think people realize how freakishly strong GSP really is. Alves won’t seem big to him at all. Marquardt is one of the smallest guys GSP trains with. Rashad knows GSP will destroy Alves, because he know how hard of a time he has with him in training. I agree that Alves striking won’t look so hot when he is constantly warry of the take down.

As good as those wrestlers are, I do actually think that GSP does have the ability to get Alves down and keep him there. If Georges can do it to Kos, I feel he can also do it to Alves. I am a huge GSP fan, but I am certainly not overlooking Alves. GSP is a great all around fighter, but I give Alves a slight edge standing.
by naturalshadow on Apr 20, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alves gets the edge if this was a kickboxing match. But standing in MMA is different…Alves is gonna be thinkin of the takedown, whereas GSP knows Alves wants to keep it standing.
Bj has better takedown defence than Alves, and look what GSP did to him.

GSP has hands down the best MMA wrestling in the UFC. If it were a pure wrestling match, someone like Kos might beat him but when you mix in strikes I dont see Alves winning this one.

Irish Kev: I just pointed out what Alves needs to do to win. Whether he can do it or not remains to be seen, but I dont think my above post is that far fetched. I think Alves has the best chance of beating gSP at 170 lbs then anyone else in this entire world. U bring up a great point as well, CAN ALVES deal with the continued pace that GSP will bring? THAT IS THE BIG QUESTION that will DECIDE this fight!

Those losses to Fitch and Fisher don’t really apply now. Thiago is so much better now and if he had the opportunity to face those 2 guys again, I believe the outcome would be much different in his favor. His knees and leg kicks are about the best in the division now, not to mention pretty heavy hands. GSP has his hands full in what I believe will be his toughest test to date. Don’t look beyond this guy!

I’m looking forward to this fight, Alves is the real deal his striking is deadly and his takedown defence has improved a lot so this should be a tough fight for GSP. As long as Alves can make weight without problems he has a great chance at pulling off an upset, he’s one of the few welterweights that can match size and strength with GSP. Then again, I thought that Fitch and BJ would give GSP trouble so what do I know. If GSP wins this fight as easily as his last wins then I don’t see another welterweight beating him.

evryone loses a fight, gsp learned from his losses, avenged them both brutally, and is not the same fighter. Alveshasnt avenged his past losses, not even sure he is better than fitch, problably, but he has to prove it, gsp has allready done that. GSPs athleticism and strenght, combined with his skill set are on a completely different level than alves. I see gsp pushing alves against the cage, tiring out his arms, and sapping his strenght and taking him down, or simply using his superior speed to strike, close the distance and take alves down when alves throws punches or kicks. i dont see any way alves can stay on the feet. GSPs striking and wrestling is 100x that of koscheck, HE CAN GET INSIDE OF ALVES AND TAKE HIM DOWN. alves wont win a single round, just like i predicted bj wouldnt either. difference is alves doesnt have as good boxing as BJ, just better kicks, but as soon as he throws one he will get taken down

What do you mean a huge disadvantage? GSP fights at 187 ripped and you can bet he will be 195 ripped when he doesn’t have to cut so much weight at MW. Silva still looked a little smooth , so how is 195 ripped vs 200(with at least 5 lb of extra fat) a huge disadvantage.

I think GSP will eventually get the better of Alves in the later rounds. I say there will be a testing a waters in the first two rounds with GSP mixing his striking to free up a takedown attempt. This will allow to do what he does best…GNP or get him in a submission.
I think after this very difficult win…hell be ready for a fight with Anderson. At first I thought GSP would never have a chance to stand against Silva……but I think it will be a tough fight to bet on and Silva’s greatest challenge. Silva and GSP should be a catch weight at 176 lbs

Yeah i agree with that to a certain extent. But GSP is a lot stronger than most guys anticipate.Even Keith Jardine whos considered a fairly strong guy at 205 hinted how strong GSP is.He said that GSP is stronger than most light heavyweights and look at just some of the guys Keith locked horns and even trains with.Thats something to really consider.Plus no disrespect to Hendo being a Great Wrestler in all but far as MMA goes I belive GSP has better technique on the Ground, far as ground and pound and submissions.Just compare there fights the proof is in the pudding.Anything can happen but until the Alves fight i wouldnt count GSP out by a long shot.If the plans are excuted with pecision it could go either way.

Maybe a little more so than the prototype himself; GSP. Either fighter could win via standing strikes or GnP. GSP could potentially sub him, but I don’t think Alves could do the same. I also question Alves’ sub defense. They are both super dangerous, but I think GSP is more talented overall and more experienced when it comes to big fights. Whoever wins, they will do it well before 5 rounds are up and we will all be buzzing like crazy on Sunday. Can’t wait. GSP to defend the belt until the up and comers stop coming up.

All it takes is one perfectly timed and placed punch for Alves. Just one, Matt Serra proved it. NO matter how good GSP is on his feet and wrestling deep down he knows that he can’t take a punch. Why do you think his speed and wrestling is so great thats because he know that one punch can end his career. Thiago has a good chin so i dont think that he is afraid to step in with GSP that has no legitimate 1 punch KO power. Thiago Alves 1st round KO!!!

GSP has no competition in the ww class, although i think anthony johnson and martin kampmann have the best chance of beating him. AJ has the wrestling, strength and explosiveness and MK is very skilled and tough as nails… (oh yeah mike swick also) i’m looking past alves (really shouldn’t because gsp has a suspect chin). and for the record spider would destroy gsp, i mean come on are you guys serious…. even though the fight was “boring” did you see the level of MARTIAL ARTS MASTERY he displayed!!!!!!!

LOL I read every comment and I agree with most posters, this SHOULD be gsp’s toughest test to date……….just like his last two opponents were supposed to be. MMA is so freaking unpredicatable your a fool to guarantee anything, there are so many factors that could change the out come of a fight. I still remember the bewildered fans the next day after the first gsp/serra fight……and to be honest the last anderson silva fight was pretty crazy I felt like I was in the twilight zone. Anderson did three things that baffeled me.
1. I noticed he blatantly rubbed his face then rubbed his body, after everything that happened with gsp/penn 2?
2. He did f-all standing and was just jiving and waving his hands in the air for 5 rounds, he had plenty of opportunities to unleash but he didn’t.
3. He fell to his feet at the end of the fight and bawled like a little baby, very odd.
Weird shit, seeing chuck getting ko’ed…which was sad, to be honest not to much would surprised me like I said with gsp/penn 2, yet I was still a little surprised LOL. Alves could ko gsp in the first round or gsp could shockingly out strike or manhandle and dominate the bigger alves, its going to be very interesting. Its funny after gsp lost to serra in such a devestating way, I seem to underestimate gsp going into everyone of his fights…and then he dominates. All things considered this should on paper be one hell of a fight.

Alves didn’t have such a great CHIN when he got caught with a up kick by fitch Danny_c. Gsp has NEVER been initialy rocked by a hit on the chin…not that it can’t happen. The one with serra was behind the ear and it messed up his equalibrium and he was a sitting duck. Gsp just like everyone else has that sweet spot were if they get hit just right they’ll get knocked out. The good chin thing is more or less a myth, if your jaw gets rocked hard enough it jars your brain and you’ll get knocked out thats a fact.

And for the record bigd I think gsp would have beaten the silva that showed up april 18th, he looked terrible and was a bundle of nerves. Gsp is a much better wrestler and silva would have been on his back most of the fight and I think he would have lost a decision, my two cents.

I like that Alves is confident he’s going to KO GSP… I think it’ll be a tough time but both fighters are amazing… either one could win IMO

anyone else pissed that alves was caught using a diuretic to clear steroid traces for your body after the desouza fight. then he comes back after his suspension looking even more roided up and then fought matt hughes like 174? i dont know, i usually dont care who wins but i really want gsp to destroy this roider’.

I think this is going to be a good fight. I’m nervous for GSP though, I don’t think he’s got knock out power, and Alves does. I wonder what his gameplan will be for this fight…
As for a fight with Silva, I’m sure all GSP is thinking about right now is Alves, he’s intelligent enough to focus on this first.

The gameplan will be to take Alves down, and control him for at least 2.5 minutes per round, inflicting as much damage as possible from the top position. GSP will take him down, and furthermore control him on the ground. He can do this at will. Alves however, cannot. Even though Alves may be the better striker, GSP more than makes up for it on the ground. GSP wins this fight via unanimous decision.

i got thiago alves winning this one the guy might be way too strong for gsp.. gsp is a strong guy but alves is from a different planet.. as far as skill set they are pretty much even i think but thiago is just a freak of nature gsp shouldnt be a heavy favor for this fight prolly like a 55-45 if not even so if thiago beats him dont be surprise or call it an upset

Thiago might have an advantage in strength – he’s a huge 170, bigger than GSP or at least pretty damn close. But I’m pretty sure he cuts more weight than GSP does to hit 170, maybe carrying around that extra muscle will be a factor. I think that GSP has the conditioning to outlast anyone. Koscheck is a conditioning beast and GSP pushed him the distance for the win.
Alves is fast enough to catch GSP with a few shots early, and strong enough to make them hurt. GSP will rise to the occasion if he is challenged and is a true champion. I think this fight’s basically gonna come down to who tags who first – this one will not go the distance. :)

No doubt, this will be GSP’s toughest challenge to date. Having said that, GSP just has too much game to lose this fight. Even if you give the stand up advantage to Alves ( which is probably a draw), GSP has so much more game on the ground. GSP has a significant advantage in both BJJ and Wrestling. I understand Alves has greatly improved his ability to avoid the takedown, but this is GSP. If GSP wants to take you down, he will do it. NOBODY has successfully avoided his takedowns, not even Fitch or KOS, who are both world class wrestlers.
This will be an awesome fight, but due to GSP’s ground dominance, it will be a unanimous decision. It should be an excellent 5 rounds of action!
