UFC 97 weigh in results for 'Redemption' LIVE!

The official weigh-in event for UFC 97: "Redemption" from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has come to a close.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in a rather uneventful affair is that UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva -- who has competed before in the 205-pound class -- tipped the scale at a lean-looking 182 pounds, which is three pounds less than the 185-pound limit.

Either he trained extremely hard for this fight and lost considerable poundage or something else (such as an illness ... pure speculation) is up. It certainly didn't stop him from backing down Leites during the staredown.

Whatever ... we'll know soon enough!

Here are the complete UFC 97 weigh in results:

Star-divide

185 lbs.: UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva (182) vs. Thales Leites (185)
205 lbs.: Chuck Liddell (206) vs. Mauricio Rua (206)
265 lbs.: Cheick Kongo (232) vs. Antoni Hardonk (249)
205 lbs.: Luis Cane (206) vs. Steve Cantwell (205)
205 lbs.: Brian Stann (206) vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (204)
205 lbs.: Eliot Marshall (205) vs. Vinny Magalhaes (204)
185 lbs.: Denis Kang (185) vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokum (185)
185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald (186) vs. Nate Quarry (186)
185 lbs.: David Loiseau (185) vs. Ed Herman (186)
155 lbs.: Mark Bocek (154) vs. David Bielkheden (157)
170 lbs.: Ryo Chonan (171) vs. TJ Grant (169)
155 lbs.: Matt Wiman (155) vs. Sam Stout (155)

Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

Remember that that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the LIVE main card action on fight night (Saturday, April 18), which is slated to air at 10 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV) from the the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The latest quick updates of the live action will begin to flow earlier than that around 8 p.m. ET.

It’s going to be a good night of fights so don’t miss it. And remember to check us out for all the pre, during and post-fight "Redemption" coverage you can handle.

If you guys saw the end of around the horn today, you’ll realize why UFC and mma as a whole won’t go to far into the mainstream! It’s not because of Dana White! 4 popular sports reporters with zero interest and zero knowledge of the sport! “it’s not mixed martial arts but there will be blood” woody page! I mean this is the problem, like any other TV station, you will only get the type of reporting the reporter is interested in!

by kevin on Apr 17, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I am fine with it not being on network tv and not being followed by old crotchety reporters. I do not follow the mainstream media anyway. I look elsewhere for the truth!

by ldcpanther on Apr 17, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

good post buddy! I could care less too! If I want mma news, I come to mmamania. PPV buys are up too, so obviously no one else really cares either!

Kevin: Its getting better. USA TODAY just announced that they will now start covering mma. THats a step in the right direction.

by john on Apr 17, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, but let’s face it.. there are kids around and that’s why MMA won’t ever be mainstream.. to me the UFC is mainstream as far as fighting sports goes, and that’s the only thing that matters..

you can’t have kids going out and kicking the crap out of eachother, but you will always have ppl going out to play soccer, basketball, tennis and whatever..

by RoB on Apr 17, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant MMA not the UFC..

by RoB on Apr 17, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

The Around the Horn thing upsets but doesn’t surprise me. It would be nice if they would put MMA Live on ESPN2 or something even if it is late night. Put it on after friday night fights when you have combat sports fans tuning in already anyway. You will get some cross-over audience. Why only keep it online?

I do get upset when a local sports writer comments on it. The only time he writes anything is when he refers to it as a fake sport. STFU, you fossil! Then I remember that like almost every newspaper in the country, their business is hemorraging money and talks of stopping the presses. Get with the times, old dog!

by PJJ on Apr 17, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

What about WWE Rob? Kids see that.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Apr 17, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

yep i watched fake wrestling and boxing as a kid..
what i mean and what everybody should know is that MMA won’t ever be bigger or be as mainstream as Basketball or Soccer and those mainstream sports are, that’s how media works and that’s just how it is..
I live in a country where MMA is the 2nd biggest sport if you count the numbers of practicioners, but you never hear about it in the media..

by RoB on Apr 17, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Hockey is a great sport too, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs is a must see…

by RoB on Apr 17, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

kids have been kicking the crap out of each other for centuries, lame argument. if thats the case why are we painting tunnels on big rocks or strapping ACME bombs to our back and rolloerskates to our feet.

by Egads on Apr 17, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

thats why AREN’T we. durrr

by Egads on Apr 17, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

On second thought, it’s not like WWE gets coverage or respect so it’s not a very good argument on my part. I guess it’s just my thought about how it doesn’t cause kids to be violent. And boxing has been around for a long time too. Hell, in America if we could get our kids to punch and kick instead of shoot and stab, that would be an improvement.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Apr 17, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess we’re livin’ in a new age. It’s the dawning of a new area! MMA mainstream is goin’ in through the backdoor one way or another.

John I posted a response to your USA today thing, but I can’t get any good posts through!

by kevin on Apr 18, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

lol, what’s up with you mania, Jesse says it’s on you today
John here;s a short answer to your USA today news:
whats up with you? your news is usually right on, but you’ve been late all week. The jap getting released, Diaz making more money, now this! B.E. is giving USA today rankings now, have been for a month. Other than that, mainstream news sucks at mma news anyways, so who cares!

by kevin on Apr 18, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you guys are missing a point here. MMA is global, it transcends national boundaries. I hear you guys listing names of tv shows, sports celebrities and news papers that i have never seen, heard of or read.
I dont watch baseball, basketball, american football, soccer etc. i record the shows that i want to see on tivo and get the rest by download or on dvd. Mainstream media always reports are always fuct, if you know any journalists you will know why, they dont care!
I would argue that the UFC is more mainstream due to its international popularity and at this stage further growth isnt really needed or beneficial.

by NOPE.COM on Apr 17, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s the way they’ve hyped the fight, it’s genius! The countdown show hyped Leites up well and even got me drinking the Thales kool aide. I am 99% sure Silva wins, but they’ve hyped it right!
I got chuck winning (although I’ll be rooting for Rua), I don’t think he had ample time to fix his cardio problem!
The non televised card is a lot better than the televised card!
not a Kongo fan, would like to see him lose!
stann

One thing even UFC detractors can’t deny, the marketing they do is amazing; those UFC countdown shows make me stoked for even the most lack luster cards.

And Quarry, he’ll lose to McDowell. I called that ages ago, hehe!

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Apr 18, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

if this happens, then Leites’ stock will rise, but only for a short time for Marquardt will take the belt away from him. But it’s good though, you know, finally. Someone dethroning the Spider. It’s a bout time. But I really don’t see that comin’ any sooner. GSP is gonna take his belt. Mark my words…For now, WAR SILVA!!

1st The guy that said CHuck by Submission is nuts adn the hes predicting a Leites over Spider upset he’s got balls but no Brains
A.Silva tko’s T.Leites in round 1
C.Liddell Ko’s Shogun in round 2

by Mark on Apr 17, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

Nice!!! You carve someone else’s pics because they’re ‘nuts’…then you go and pic Liddell to KO Rua. Um…when was Liddell’s last KO? If he couldn’t KO Wandy, what makes you think Liddell can KO Rua????

I have liked Liddell since the first time I saw him fight. Unfortunately, the sport has likely passed him by…Even if he wins, he’ll never fight his way back to the top again. There are too many young, tough, and multi-dimensional fighters at 205. The end comes for all dominant athletes…I, for one, will enjoy what I hope is his final scrap in the UFC

by Roy on Apr 17, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

So, if Bielkheden didnt make weight, what happens to the fight? Did they give him time to cut the 1 extra pound?

I know they tend to overlook these things (Cybog/Akano), but what the hell are these rules for????

by Stryker on Apr 17, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, they’ll give him a couple hours at least. If he doesn’t he’ll just forfeit 20% of his purse. I think he’ll make 156. He still had his shorts on ( and a piece of string tied on his wrist).

Bielkheden got an OK from the comission and doesnt need to cut that extra pound. Thats because they used a new digital scale that an extra margin was set.
