feel sorry for shogun never really got off to a good start in the ufc, with chuck mixing up his camps now hes gonna knock him out 1st round

I have Chuck winning as well. But I think he will need more than one victory to be considered the #1 challenger. But as Dana once said, he will provide what the fans want (read… what makes money). Chuck’s not getting any younger so who knows what will happen in the LHW landscape.

by DJ on Apr 17, 2009 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Chuck and the UFC are both on CRACK if they think Chuck only needs to beat Shogun and then 1 more win to get a title shot!

by john on Apr 17, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

i know! Dana’s is in one interview saying it may be Chuck’s last fight..but if he wins get may get a title shot? really weird..Dana is just trying to give his buddy one more chance at the top

by newfie on Apr 17, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The only way that Chuck gets a title shot after one win if he manages to beat Rua…which he won’t in my opinion…is if he fights Anderson Silva at 205 after this and KOs him. Then and only then would Chuck be able to get a title shot after one more win.

Either way…I’m not worried…Chucky is goin down in this fight…on his back and getting subbed.

I think all the retirement talk might be getting to Chuck…it may be a distraction or it may be motivation to him…guess we’ll see tomorrow. I’m very excited for this fight.

by Buster Bluth on Apr 17, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m a fan of Chuck’s, but I’m not sure how he always seems to be on a fast track for the belt. They were saying Chuck would get a title shot if he beat Rashad too, which I don’t think he would have earned had he won. Chuck needs to come to the realisation that he has taken a pretty big tumble down the rankings and needs to focus on winning at least three or four more fights.

With that said, the way this division beats up on itself it’s not completely inconceivable for Chuck to be in contender status after two wins, but things would have to fall right for him.

by RealDrew on Apr 17, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Why are you guys even mentioning Dana or the UFC when it comes to what Chuck just said? CHUCK is the one who said it. OF COURSE that is what he is going to say. Is he supposed to say he needs 3-4 more wins after this? You guys just love to hate on Dana and the UFC!

by BNF on Apr 17, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I’M with Buster! Agreed on all POINTS!!!! We have been getting clowned on here for picking Rua via submission…..We will have the last laugh come Saturday!

I have been keeping track of the un-loyal Shogun haters. After he dismantles Chuck….I dont want to see any of you guys hoping back on his nuts! Bandwagon is closed! Seats are RSVP’d for the loyal fans, that stuck by him during 2 surgeries and lackluster performances!

War Rua!

wait till he starts winning some more fights and the “fans” will start coming out of the woodworks.don’t let them on john.

by roy on Apr 17, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I guess it’s partially philisophical. Do you think lifetime accomplishments should play into the equation or do you think he should have to work his way up to a title shot like everyone else?

Anyway, no way he beats Machida no matter what he does so I don’t see him holding the strap again.

John, you need to stop being so nice to Buster Bluth. You realize the two of you are in love with the same man.

Chuck wins

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Apr 17, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

There’s enough Shogun love to go around my friend. In my best Putty voice “You gotta support the team” when it comes to your favorite fighters. You don’t hide your face when times are tough and everyone is against you…you shout out loud your man love and hug dem nutz as hard as you can…hahaha!

I see Shogun being aggressive and getting Chuck up against the fence and then I see the master of the muay thai clinch feeding Liddell some nasty knees and Chuck eventually crumpling…Shogun gets on top and lands some nice elbows and passes guard and gets Chuck into a beautiful arm triangle until Chuck goes ZZZZZZzzzzzz! Book it!

by Buster Bluth on Apr 17, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like somebody read “The Secret.” Just kidding. I wouldn’t be shocked if Shogun pulled it off, but putting money on the fight always makes me separate out the emotions. Reason says Chuck wins, but there’s a lot of room for doubt here since we can’t be certain who will show up for either man.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Apr 17, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

john i’ve always been a shogun fan, just a little skeptical about his cardio. ithink he’s working on it. but i don’t think he has had enough time to get it where he needs to be. he’s a great striker so he has agood chance against chuck. but i’m a chuck fan also. and if it goes to later rounds it favors chuck. chuck is only one fight away if he wins but that fight has to be against rampage or rashad, after shad loses to machida of course. if he can beat shogun and either of those guys i think he would deserve a shot. name one person who has had a tougher last ten fights than chuck liddell.

by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Apr 17, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Chuck beats Rua decisively (that’s key). Then beats former champ Evans (avenging his loss). Then beats new champ and previously undefeated Machida. I can see it happening. If Chuck beats Rua and Evans who deserves a title shot more than him? No one stands out in my mind. Machida and Thiago were the two over due guys. 205 is too up and down. Too many great fighters for anyone to string together many wins. That’s why it is crazy that it took this long for Lyoto to get a shot! The only other person at the top of the food chain is Rampage. But he’s getting his shot. Chuck should too. Rampage lost to griffin, had a flash KO of Silva, almost lost to Jardine. And now he gets a shot. That’s cool. Rampage and Chuck have a history of great fights that rightfully puts them ahead of some of the young hungry guys. That should make them even more hungry. They keep doing what they do and like The Dragon, their time will come.

If Chuck is indeed one of DW’s best friends, then I believe that a title shot is not far off … assuming that he beats Shogun.

Is it fair? Hell no. But its pretty obvious that certain fighters get more of a “push” than others.

Especially an icon like the Iceman.

Iceman v. Shogun. I have read alot of people claiming that Shogun will submit Iceman. Interesting.

I am curious. How will he do this? If Shogun has to close the distance to take him down and submit him…won’t he have to eat some bombs? I remember Babalu trying to impose the same game plan before he went to sleep. Same with Randy, who is one of the best tacticians in MMA.

Chuck’s loss to Rashad was a shock. What people don’t mention is that Rashad never tried to establish GnP. That speaks volumes about Chuck’s takedown defense.

Shogun. ACL. Cardio due to ACL. Which Shogun will show up? Healthy or not? So far all of the Pride guys (minus Hendo IMO) have failed to live up to expectations. Shogun fans : make your case. Teach me something…

I got Chuck by TKO.

by OJR on Apr 17, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Great post OJR!

NO WAY Chuck gets subbed. It just won’t happen. This is Chucks fight to lose. Chuck by KO!

“Shogun. ACL. Cardio due to ACL.” teach you something? how about some grammar?

by brendan on Apr 17, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Stop hating when you can’t even start a sentence with a capital letter… At least debate the content of his post.

by BNF on Apr 17, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

OJR:
1) Chucks Legendary sprawl is designed to stop wrestling takedowns. HIs sprawl is worthless against Crafty ju jitsu trips. Chuck got most of his wins against American wrestlers. Only fighters that Chuck beat who’s jits was worth a damn is Babz(who fought like an Idiot against Chuck) and Jeremy Horn (washed up/over rated). I doubt that Chuck has spent much time through out his career working on defending jits trips. Keep in mind that Shogun has been training with Maia and I am sure Maia has taought Shogun a few more jits trips that Maia used to takedown all the American wrestlers he faced so far.

2)Shogun’s chin is much better then Randy’s or Babalu. I dont think I have ever seen Shogun Rocked. Closest thing was Rogerio dropping him a few times, but Shogun recovered before even hitting the ground and just bounced back up.

3)Its been AGES since Chuck has been on the ground against a jits wizard. Therefor, I am positive that he doesnt spend much time in the gym defending submissions. BIG MISTAKE!!! Chuck has never seen the type of high caliber jits assault that Shogun can bring! Shogun is masterful on the ground, and it would take CHUCK years to become close to defending himself against Shogun’s Jits. If this fight goes to the ground, it will be over really quickly.

I got shogun winning by a Kimura, or leg locks!

by john on Apr 17, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks, john. You have made a very good case for all the Shogun fans out there. I just hope he is 100%.

great post john, i would not be surprized to see shogun get a ko or tko either.

by roy on Apr 17, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

That post would all make perfect sense IF Shogun had a gas tank! I don’t believe he will have enough in the tank for multiple takedown attempts. As long as Chuck defends the first couple Shogun will likely be out on his feet ala the Coleman fight!

by attakdog on Apr 17, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I am on the fence about this fight. I would like to see both guys have a great showing. Time isn’t on Chuck’s side so I’d like to see him show he isn’t too old but the UFC writes guys off quickly so I don’t want Shogun to get thrown on an undercard either. I really hope for a mirror image of the Liddell/Wandy fight that both can look good in. I can see Rua wanting to showcase his stand-up since he hasn’t looked good in his two fights. Hopefully, this is a three round war but IF Shogun decides he wants it to the ground I agree with John. Leg lock finish.

by PJJ on Apr 17, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

this is one of the most foolish posts i have ever read, dont you think chuck would specifically be training for Jit take downs? instead of not training for them – knowing that Rua is A BJJ specialist. Shogun hasnt had his chin tested, therefore we do not know if he is chin is sustainable to a Chuck overhand, I agree Shogun has the advantage on the ground by far, but whos to say part of Chucks new regime is high level BJJ.

by daleg on Apr 17, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

OJR I agree with you about any sort of submission. I can’t see that happening because we all know that Chuck fights his best when he is moving away. In the fights that he has lost of late he has been pressing forward and seems to get impatient. Shogun would have to establish leg kicks and solid stand up to get Chuck to the ground. Once he gets him there he would have to keep him down which we all know if easier said than done. Randy couldn’t do it and if he couldn’t I can’t see how Shogun could. Which leads me to believe that Shogun will not even attempt a take down unless he gets tired.

If Shogun does get tired Chuck will stop the fight for sure. However I do not believe Shogun is going to gas in this fight. I think it will be a stand up fight and that is where Shogun has always fought. If I were Chuck I would attempt a few take downs early in the fight and wear Shogun down a little. Defending a take down takes a lot of energy especially if you don’t train for it and if Chuck does take him down it takes a lot to get back up. Which is why I believe Shogun gassed early against Coleman because he pushed the pace and made Shogun defend the take down.

With all that being said I don’t think in a million years that Chuck is going to attempt any take downs in the first 2 rounds. We all know he had that take down against Wanderlei which was late in the third.

I am excited about this fight and am rooting for Chuck in this one.

by MMAFan1981 on Apr 17, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

If Rua was smart he’d pretend to gas and pounce when Chuck went in for the kill (most likely dropping his hands for a body shot or uppercut).

And if Chuck was smart, he would not do that again. Put your uppercuts and body shots at the end of your combos. And be patient.

If Shogun is in shape, Chuck is dead.

I would love to see Shogun run through Chuck, Machida destroy Rashad and then see a rematch – one final hoorah for Chuck – with the result he other way round. Then with Rashad out cold on the floor announces his retirement.

by DownUnder on Apr 17, 2009 3:13 AM EDT reply actions

Shogun wont be in shape. I dont believe in 3 months he could have improved his cardio to anywhere near the level it needs to be to compete at the top of the UFC.

by attakdog on Apr 17, 2009 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions

do you think that’s becuase of his torn ACL or he just never had cardio and is being exposed in the UFC for it?

by Robert(1) on Apr 17, 2009 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know. The ACL obviously doesn’t help but that was a while ago now. Maybe he never was that great cardio wise, or maybe he was on ahum certain “supplements” in Japan that helped him get through, who knows. Either way, his cardio isn’t up to the standard of a top level ufc fighter. I went to see him in Ireland and it was embarassing to watch. The crowd had turned on him in the end for his dreadful performance.

by attakdog on Apr 17, 2009 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Torn ACL’s take about 1 1/2 year to fully heal that’a long time..I see Shogun mualing Chuck all the way

by Robert(1) on Apr 17, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I just don’t see it. I don’t believe he’s capable of going full tilt at chuck for anything longer than 3 or 4 minutes. If the fight leaves the first round, Shogun is doomed. He has to get the job done early!

by attakdog on Apr 17, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I actually see Chuck taking Rua to the ground a couple of times like he did with Wandy(which i jumped out of my chair at the bar in celebration when that happened)i’ve been saying it all along, if the Iceman will change up his game a little bit he won’t be using “i just got caught” as an excuse every fight. I love the dude, he’s the reason why I started watching and training in MMA, but the guy needs to change a few things about his game.

by bigbadbrad on Apr 17, 2009 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Chuck has lost his mind and is delusional.

I saw him at UFC 86 Q&A for Fight Club members and all he could talk about is if he beat Evans he was next in line for the title shot .. I mean wtf dude , get a grip …

There are atleast 3-5 ppl ( if not more ) that are more deserving of a title shot atm then he is.

by Dayzah on Apr 17, 2009 3:21 AM EDT reply actions

Dayzah, who do you think is next in line after Rampage – or at least who will be in the mix.

by WB on Apr 17, 2009 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I think after Chuck loses you will see Shogun in the title shot , Forrest again , Luiz Cane possibly ,adn you still have Evans , Machida and Rampage that have put much better numbers up lately compared too Chuck .. There is Matt Hamill , Brandon Vera ( who has sucked lately , but not as bad as Chuck )and Rich Franklin.

All of those guys are more deserving of a title shot atm then Chuck has … His last good fight was 16 months ago and it was a it went the distance.. His last tko/ko was over a washed up Tito in Dec 06 ..

Does Chuck bring in the big cash? Yes .. Did he play a huge part in making the UFC what it is now? Yes.. Does that mean you can lose 3 of your last 4 and still be in a title shot? Not im my opinion.

When I see bs I like too call it bs , and thats what him thinking hes in line for a shot is , complete bs.

by Dayzah on Apr 17, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

why would he not have been next in line if he had beat rashad, rashad was next in line for beating him.

by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Apr 17, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

they had to give rashad the title shot since the ufc said ‘winner of this match gets a title shot’ assuming that chuck would win. that was their plan that rashad knocked the F out.

by joseph.67 on Apr 18, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree completely, but with the UFC it is not about who is next in line or whats fair. It’s who will sell the most tickets and make the most money (Lesner).‘Fan’ favourites and ticket sellers tend to get preference above all. I think its BS myself and even though I have a few favourite fighters I wouldn’t want them to get a title shot unless they have worked for it and beaten the appropriate fighters to get there. There are quite a few thousand ‘fans’ who could give a crap whether their favourite fighters deserves it or not and are quite content to see a fighter do nothing deserving to get a shot.

by Ade on Apr 17, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions

because Rampage that fought Wandy the first and second time was totally different to the Rampage who fought him a 3rd time. Rampage was on a tear (apart from the blip against Forrest).

Chuck and Rampage have not changed since their 2nd fight.

by Adam on Apr 17, 2009 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Rampage was on a “tear?”…he decisioned a 185 stinky man, TKO’d Marvin “stepping stone” Eastman, KO’d Chuck (credit for that one, he was the reigining champ) and decisioned Dan then got decisioned by Forrest. Thats not what I call a “tear”……

chuck needs to stop worrying about a title shot and focus on his oppenents. chuck has the ability to beat anyone, but if his head is anywhere but in this fight he is in serious trouble

by bullsh*t on Apr 17, 2009 4:18 AM EDT reply actions

He does have the ability to beat anyone if he can land that big punch of his, the trouble is that has recently faced better strikers than him and in Jardines case a solid game plan with kicks which left him completely stranded. I really do not think he wants anything to do with Jardine anymore after watching him go the distance with Rampage.

by Ade on Apr 17, 2009 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions

So Chuck beats a washed up Shogun tomorrow night (which he probably will) and that entitles him to a number one contenders match?? Why? He’s lost three of his last four fights.

by attakdog on Apr 17, 2009 4:24 AM EDT reply actions

I’m with you attakdog, it’s all about having a huge name fighting for titles in the most stacked division in MMA. No disrespect to Rashad and Lyoto.

by RedDog on Apr 17, 2009 4:46 AM EDT up reply actions

It is all abou the names. Look at Forrest, he beats Hector Ramirez, then labours to a win over a half fit, completely gassed Rua and gets the title shot??? Why, to appease the Ultimate fighter generation? It’s about time the most deserving fighters start getting their shots sooner. Look how long Machida’s had to wait, and it would have been even longer if Ramapage hadn’t have turned the fight down.

by attakdog on Apr 17, 2009 5:03 AM EDT up reply actions

if you beat the champ then you deserved the opportunity. if rampage ran thru forrest i would have been the first to say he didn’t deserve the shot, but he left the champ and that means he deserved to be there.

by RedDog on Apr 17, 2009 6:28 AM EDT up reply actions

he needs 3 wins imo

after he beats Rua he should fight the Griffin vs Silva winner

by Braveheart uk&roi on Apr 17, 2009 4:54 AM EDT reply actions

This is the last chance that the UFC has to make big bucks out of Chuck and milk his past glory and success for all it’s worth. I am sure they will do whatever it takes to make sure that his road to a title shot is as smooth as they can possibly make it. Nobody was shocked at how fast Dana gave Shogun to Liddell after his pathetic performance against Coleman. Chuck wanted Jardine but Dana could not risk him losing that fight, but I think after he watched Shogun against Coleman, he probably thought that it was a fight that Chuck couldn’t lose, but either way it is a win win situation for Dana. He’ll hype up the winner no matter what.

by Ade on Apr 17, 2009 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I am a Chuck fan, but there is no way that he is one win away from a title shot. The LHW division is loaded, and I agree with Braveheart, he needs 3 wins. I do think he will beat Shogun tomorrow night. After that he needs a rematch and win over Jardine, and then another match up with Rashad / Rampage, whichever one doesnt have the belt….If he pulls wins in all those, he no doubt deserves another title shot!

One win in your last four fights is #1 contender?

I don’t think so.

Shogun is not exactly a top contender either.

This is more of a dispute as to who will fight Eric Schafer to move up in rankings.

I got chuck winning this fight then he should fight the loser of Machida/Evans for a possible title shot. I see this panning out Machida beats Evans then goes on to defend against Rampage. Chuck beats Rua then rematches Evans. Rampage and Chuck both lose then we get our black on black crime with Rampage/Evans for the title shot. After all this I don’t know.

by Gina's triangle chokes dummy :) on Apr 17, 2009 8:53 AM EDT reply actions

This is frustrating to hear. One the one side, most fans seem to be convinced that Liddell descended quite a bit from all rankings. On the other, the pressure the UFC is probably going to exert to make “money matches” (matches that don’t really make sense, but than your average viewer will pay to see anyway). I hope this is not the case, and that Chuck is forced to impress fans one or two times more, that is if he wins vs. Shogun (though I confess it’s hard not to doubt Shogun).

by ARodOfIron on Apr 17, 2009 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

The two reasons I could possibly see chuck getting a title shot are 1.) Crazier things have happened in the name of ratings. 2.) The LHW division chews itself up with everybody beating everyone else. I would say the only two people that clearly stand out as head of the pack for a title shot are Rampage and Lyoto, who are both going to get it. After that it’s kind of a crap shoot, and popularity always plays a big part.

by RyGuy on Apr 17, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

There is no way Chuck should get a title shot if he wins tomorrow. The winner of the fight tomorrow should get the winner of Forrest/T.Silva; then the winner of that can have the title shot after Rampage. Man I want Joe Silva’s job.

by DaveO on Apr 17, 2009 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

this is stupid. We don’t want to hear about a stupid title shot. I want to hear how your gonna kncok Shogun’s head off and will not discuss anything doing with a title shot until after a couple wins. I know its his goal, but come on, lets beat Shogun first then talk.

WAR ICEMAN!

God i hope Chuck does the business and puts Shogun’s chin into next week.

I don’t see any reason why he’s doesn’t deserve a shot. I can see him fighting forrest after Rua and with forrest style playing into chucks hands (walking onto punches).

I think he’d have a better chance against Rampage as he seems to struggle when fighters who come to frustrate.

by brian on Apr 17, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

I have no problem with Chuck talking about getting the belt back. Granted, in no way should he be talking about it just around the corner. But he sees that as a goal and a symbol of being the best in the division and a WINNER.

Adversely, you can look at Rich Franklin who just has said he isn’t worried about being a champ. He justs wants to put on good fights. He knows he won’t take the belt from Anderson so is content to put on a good show. I am glad he puts entertaining the fans in a valuable position but still strive to be the best! Chuck’s been beat by Rampage twice but he still wants that fight. A warrior’s attitude and I love it.

by PJJ on Apr 17, 2009 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

The way i see it is this, chuck is better at the striking, Shogun is better at the BJJ and Chuck is better at wrestling and cardio. Therefore Chuck has the advantages going into this fight, if Shogun turns up in shape it will be interesting. I see Chuck KO’ing him though based on Chucks experience and Ruas terrible UFC performances.

Good post PJJ. I think if he wins Jardine should be next before he’s even rated a top four contender.

JOHN, I want you to remember this name so when shogun gets knocked out i want you to admit that you were way wrong. If chuck gets sub’d ill praise you and your blog. But remember you are saying there is a better chance chuck gets submitted, rather than shogun getting ko’d. I dooooonnnnt thiiink sooooo. I doubt you would admit you were wrong without throwing a million excuses out there anyway.
