MMA Quick Quote: How do you say 'No Respect' in Portuguese?

Her victory is hollow and her turning a blind eye to her lack of professionalism is deplorable. Never once was an apology uttered. Never once did I see one act of accountability. I don't know how to say it in Portuguese but, Cyborg is deserving of no respect and no praise. If you were ever a fan, I'd find someone of better character and better heart.
-Top ranked heavyweight Josh Barnett, veteran of Japanese MMA and cornerman of Hitomi Akano, slams the weight-cutting fiasco from Cristiane Santos on his official MySpace blog via MMA Fanhouse. 'Cyborg' came into the weigh-ins for the Strikeforce: 'Shamrock vs. Diaz' event a whopping seven pounds over the limit. Santos was unable to make the mark despite the additional time alloted for her to cut, yet the California State Athletic Commission conveniently turned a blind eye to the infraction. After some initial resistance, Akano ultimately gave in to the pressure of disappointing both Strikeforce officials and the fans in attendance (and those watching at home). Santos manhandled Akano en route to a third round TKO, and gratuitously celebrated her victory following the stoppage.

Apparently Barnett wasn’t listening when she apologized after the fight. He must have already forgotten the trouble he got into for taking steroids; Mr. self-righteous. Also, there’s a double standard because I don’t remember this big of a stink when Gina Carano came in overweight recently.

“I mean, you come in overweight for a fight… okay… two fights, it’s getting serious, but she’s never made weight for a fight ever! For people to say, “She’s fighting out of her weight class,” well, when she tried to fight at 135, she made 139 and when she tried to fight at 140, she made 144.5 so I don’t think it has anything to do with her fighting out of her weight class." — Shayna Baszler, former Carano opponent

Apparently you didn’t read the blog!!! He was commenting on her actions/lack of professionalism and her behaviour towards the fighter he cornered. No apologies were offered until it could be heard by the media. No class…
What does his steroid suspension from 7 years ago have to with this? He’s paid his dues, and clearly does not do them any longer…he’s evolved.
You may have forgotten, but there was a major ‘stink’ when Carano could not make weight…

I highly doubt that Cyborg is gonna call out Barnett for his use of steroids. I know John loves to talk about not having any positive tests or proof when calling out a fighter for steroid use, but if you think for a second that Cyborg has never used roids, then I have I great deal for you on the Brooklyn Bridge.

well, I was at the weigh in, as soon as the weight was announced, Cyborg uttered (embarrassingly) I’m sorry. If I heard it, Barnett heard it! This is typical, if someone doesn’t get down on their knees and beg for forgiveness, then they didn’t apologize! kinda dumb, how many times does she need to say it?
I think girl problems is a lame excuse, how bout she’s off the roids? She looked a lot leaner, not as much muscle mass, could this have posed a problem in the cut?

Women’s MMA is on shaky ground as it is. The two most visible in the sport are Gina and Cyborg, who have both had chronic issues making weight. This is both unprofessional and not terribly bright, if they want to continue to make a living fighting and see interest in women’s MMA grow.
by CL on Apr 16, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Girl problems is a real issue for female fighters. Most women can gain/retain anywhere between 3-10lbs of water weight while on their periods. That being said she knew when the damn thing was coming and should have made the necessary changes.

Good point Kevin, regardless of whether Cyborg was in the wrong for not making weight I don’t really see how its any of Barnett’s business. Like you said, he isn’t exactly one to question the character of another fighter.
To be honest, I think there should be more than one weight class for women, as it is clearly too low for Carano and Cyborg to cut to and it is unfair on them and their grossly outsized and outmatched opponents. Hopefully Cyborg-Carano will take place soon as its a long overdue fight.
by David on Apr 16, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I do disagree with you Kevin. He did make a mistake in the past, but that was a super long time ago. He learned from it. Just because someone made a mistake doesnt mean that they cant try to lead others in the right direction. Or expect others to not make the same mistake. Or make a different mistake even.
With your theory, only a true saint should ever be President of the U.S. Its just unrealistic. You cant put someone down for a mistake they made, owned, and worked past.

Megumi fuji talked in her blog about all the disgusting things that went on in the negotiations from the backstage weigh in(where the brazilians got pissed at akano after they couldn’t make weight for the second time), to crooked fn CSAC officials, to scumbag chute box managers and the person who may become Jeremy Lappen II. She also said that all women fighters have this “girl problem” so fn deal with it. It’s an insult to all the female fighters trying to legitimize the sport by actually making weight. All i can say is that i am definitely off that bandwagon.

SHORT_BUS — Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Like Josh is some paragon of virtue. His self-righteousness here makes me want to hurl.
It was what it was. The commission allowed the fight to go ahead. Cyborg’s opponent agreed to fight. Why the outrage. Oh yeah. So sites like this one will pick it up.
by MMACrossfire on Apr 16, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Those are very harsh words. He is right about it being a lack of professionalism. I’m sure the period thing was a real factor but other female fighters make it happen and Cyborg should have as well. She did apologize after the fight if I am recalling correctly- vowed it would never happen again. She seemed embarrassed to me during the post fight interview. I wish Akano would have stuck to her word and not fought. The fight was so lopsided it was painful to watch. But it would have been that way whether Cyborg made weight or not.
I only wish there was as much venom slung at Gino for doing the same thing repeatedly. Cyborg looks like a dude and she gets what she deserves for being unprofessional. Gina is pretty, bites her lips every two seconds, misses weight all the time and gets pushed as one of the “biggest faces of MMA”.

by newfie on Apr 16, 2009 2:39 PM EDT reply actions
The fight went on becuase Strikeforce is on an uphill climb to compete with the UFC and becuase the Athletic Commission took some money under the table to turn a blind eye – no other reason. If it was a no-name fight, this wouldnt have happened.
Akano should’ve held out for way more. She had all the power. I would’ve demanded to get paid more than Cyborg. What are they going to do?? They can’t replace Akano last minute, she’s the one who made weight!
These weigh-ins are becoming ridiculous. The rules are in palce to PROTECT the fighters. Whats the point in having fighters make weight, when the fighters who don’t make weight, they’ll just ask the other fighter if he/she accepts the weight difference??? Most times the heavier fighter has to give up part of his/her purse. How does that protect the fighter? How was Akano being protected in that fight??
This has nothing to do with women’s mma…its all about money.
by Stryker on Apr 16, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions
women’s mma is about one thing, and it’s not the money! It’s about Gina fighting cyborg. Name 1 other woman fighter! Not Kim Couture! It’s all about 1 fight, then hopefully it’s gone!

I was referring to the Akano-Cyborg fiasco. It IS about money. Why do you think they want to put Carano against Cyborg? Surely it can’t be to sell tickets!
They wanted Cyborg to fight Akano to showcase her and set up the Carano fight. They need people to know Cyborg to SELL TICKETS. Money is what made this Cyborg-Akano fight go on.
After this Cyborg-Carano fight plus the obvious rematch…there wont be much left.

I agree with Barnett 100%. When I was watching the fight and listening to the pre-fight talking by the announcing team, I felt bad for even watching. I knew how it would turn out, and knew she was highly disrespectful for showing up that much over weight. Then after the fight was over, she celebrated like she just won the belt or something. No respect here

Was there a compensation with their purse? When Gouveia missed weight against MacDonald, he had to give 20% of his total purse to MacDonald, was their anything similar here?
by james on Apr 16, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, apparently she worked out a deal to get paid more to accept the fight, and i would assume on top of that, she should have gotten a sizable portion of Cyborgs purse. I think the rate is around 5% purse lost per pound over the limit.
I didnt hear about Akano getting a 30-40% purse cut though, but who knows.
by Big D on Apr 16, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
I usually hate Barnett and everything he says, but I can’t argue with this one. Akano should have stood strong and not taken the fight. She and her team are totally in the right for being angry.

The Babyface Assassin is in the right on this one, Cyborg once again came in overweight (by a large margin) and still couldn’t make weight after given more than the usual amount of time. Not making weight is both unprofessional and disrespectful. I think a greater penalty should be placed upon fighters who cannot make weight, possibly suspension or a greater fine placed upon their fight purse.

The amount she works out and her low body-fat percentage I can almost guarantee she doesn’t get her menstrual cycle.
by MM_Eh on Apr 16, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s a very good point and something I totally forgot about. However, it is still possible she has a cycle. You have to be pretty extreme to lose that. She’s definitely lean and a muscle shark, but her ability to look that way is both a testament to how hard she works and genetics. Some chicks may never look that way not matter how extreme their workouts are.
by DSmith on Apr 16, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s possible of course, but I would guess unlikely that she gets her menstrual cycle. She’s way too lean, and the female body needs a certain percent body-fat in order to menstruate.

Not making weight isn’t a good reason to not like someone.
As far as Cyborg is concerned, reason #1 for never cheering for her: she has testicles. And, I’m not saying that in the typical, “Lets crack jokes about her bein a man.” style. I honestly believe she has testicles.
It’s not fun to watch her fight, cause you have to look at her the whole time and think, “Frick, she’s got testicles! Gross!”
