Jason MacDonald action figure to be included in future Round 5 MMA series

MARKHAM, Ontario, Canada, April 16, 2009 – Round 5 and Pavelich Sports Entertainment are pleased to announce that Jason "The Athlete" MacDonald will become the first Canadian to create a figurine in his likeness through Round 5, the Ontario-based company which has become the leader in mixed martial arts collectibles. MacDonald, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, will now join an exclusive group of MMA stars who have collaborated with Round 5 to produce some of the most detailed and unique MMA action figures in the world.

"Since we are based in Ontario, I am particularly excited that Jason MacDonald is the first Canadian to sign with Round 5," said Damon Lau, Round 5 President and Co-Founder. "He is one of the most successful and popular MMA stars in the country and enjoys a strong following across North America."

MacDonald’s figurine is expected to be released as part of a Round 5 series later this year. To date, two Series have been issued: Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, Quinton ‘Rampage' Jackson and Tito Ortiz comprised Series 1 while Rich Franklin, Sean Sherk, Anderson Silva and Wanderlei Silva were released in Series 2. Series 3, featuring Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski, "Big John" McCarthy, Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira, is scheduled to be available at retail and at www.Round5MMA.com within the next three to four weeks.

Star-divide

Nicknamed "The Athlete," MacDonald began his career with a series of dominating performances in Canada’s largest MMA organization, the Maximum Fighting Championship. He then burst onto the international stage with an impressive triangle choke victory over Ed Herman at the UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night 7 in October of 2006.

Now sporting a 21-11 record (5-4 in the UFC), MacDonald is set to take on former TUF alumnus and UFC middleweight contender Nate Quarry at UFC 97 in Montreal, Quebec on Saturday.

As in the earlier series, MacDonald will maintain creative control of his likeness, including the pose, facial design and shorts. He will be instrumental in creating the final design and will benefit from a royalty agreement that gives him a considerable portion of the sale of his figurines.

Round 5 collectible figures may be purchased at leading retailers such as Toys ‘R’ Us, FYE, Century Martial Arts, Sunrise Records, The Treadmill Factory and Hatashita International. Other retailers can be found at www.round5mma.com/wheretobuy.php.

Round 5 plans to release three additional series of athletes in 2009, one during each quarter. In addition to those noted above, Fedor Emelianenko and Gina "Conviction" Carano have also partnered with Round 5 for figurines scheduled for 2009 release.

About Round 5

Jason McDonald really bothers me for some reason, can’t put my finger on why tho.

by Nick J on Apr 16, 2009 9:59 AM EDT reply actions

I feel the same way. I think its because he looks like that mouthy kid you would kick the crap out of in school. Kinda like a Junie Browning.

by UFC Champ on Apr 16, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Spot on.

He proper reminds me of an ugly geeky kid at school who started training karate and going to the gym to prove all the jocks wrong.

Whenever I hear a redhead called a ‘ginger’ I smirk. Reminds me of the Southpark episode.

I had to double check the date when I read this. Today’s not April 1st is it???

I’m Canadian, and proud of our MMA fighters, just not this guy. Just don’t like him. Don’t really know why.

the sad thing is not that Pavelich sent out a press release about this (I guess he has to since Ryan Ford sucks), but that you posted it. Times is hard in the content business.

Strange that so many people don’t like him. He’s been very humble and soft spoken in every interview I’ve ever heard with him. He has fought a lot of tough guys and has some impressive wins on his record. Not saying that he would be my first choice for a ufc action figure, but I still like the guy

Good post. Stop hating on the guy, haters. He’s a hard worker and he only fights high level competition. Personally, I can’t see the figure being a high seller but don’t hate him because he’s not as popular as GSP. Jason is a good guy, and I don’t mind him representing Canada the way he does. Shame on you haters.

Jason McDonald would be number 3,657 on my list of "fighters to turn into an action figure!. Only 3 behind Michael “Out for the Count” Bizbing.

Seriously, this story’s a wind up isn’t it???

by attakdog on Apr 16, 2009 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

Seriously.. I would of never put JMacDonald and MMA action Figure in the same sentence..till this thread. OMG!! What are they thinking.. now everyone gets an action figure.. Do I get one of me too?

by PhilQNY on Apr 16, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

There are many guys who deserve a figure over MacDonald but it most likely has to do with signing over a their names. How Chuck doesn’t have a Round 5 figure is beyond me, except that he has one with Jakks. Round 5 kicks the shit out Jakks.

Does his action figure fold when you hit it?

by Pat on Apr 16, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

Cus you know, GSP doesn’t deserve an action figure from Round 5 or anything….wtf.

by Andy C on Apr 16, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions

Two words…who cares.

by nathan on Apr 16, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

I am kind of stunned, most sites usually praise Macdonald for his exciting matches, and he is a favorite of mine to watch as well. The fact he rolled so well with Maia was very impressove. Never be champ, but he is a better gatekeeper then Leben, and never boring.
