Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton HBO 24/7 (Video)

Boxing superstar and 10-time world champion Oscar De La Hoya -- one of the last big draws in professional boxing -- told fans yesterday during a brief ceremony that:

"It's over, it's over inside the ring for me."

Now boxing has a huge void to fill, but not necessarily a shortage of talent to fill it. Case in point is the upcoming IBO junior welterweight title fight between Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao on May 2 -- the man who may have retired "The Golden Boy" after stopping him back on December 6.

Here's a sneak peek:

Star-divide

The player will show in this paragraph

Can stars like Hatton and Pacquiao survive in a post-De La Hoya world? A thrilling, twelve-round war on May 2 would certainly be a step in the right direction.

Id love to see Mayweather come out of retirement to fight Pacquio but I doubt that’ll happen.

by c-war on Apr 15, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

Don’t worry c-war. This will materialize sooner or later. I’ve actually heard a rumor[not 100 % I bet] that Mayweather is comin’ outta retirement to fight Juan Manuel Marquez[a tune up match I guess, hehe!]or somethin’. In any case, Marquez wants a piece of the Pacman, but he’ll fight Floyd first. that I don’t get.

On the other hand, after Pacman fights Hitman and Floyd, he’s gonna STFU Valero once and for all! Then retirement. What a piece of gossip!

What’s boxing?

by Gankaho on Apr 15, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

Some barbaric sport where two men strap these really big gloves on, to where they cant use their hands at all, and can only punch each other in the face and body till the time expires. Brutal sport really.

by Synyster on Apr 15, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s an old school form of entertainment before MMA came along.

Boxing will always have its place, but this blogger does not give a sh*t. After the De La Hoya/Maywether fight I said that’s it. I was literally yelling at De La Hoya to throw some leg kicks or take him down. LOL. I knew that was the end for me.

Boxing doesn’t need De La Hoya to sell fights. There are still tons of great fighters out there and real boxing fans are still going to be interested.

I said real boxing fans.

Paul Williams, Roy Jones, Pac-man, Hatton, Pavlik, Calzaghe, Klitchko brothers, Marquez, Cotto, Margarito, Mosley… these guys are all big names in the sport.

Boxing has done a poor job of marketing itself in the last decade, but there are still plenty of great fighters. The HW devision is weak, but that’s true for MMA as well. It’s hard to find huge guys who are talented and athletic that haven’t already committed themselves to other team sports.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

jaun diaz, juan markez, nate cambel, winky write are also some top conteneders, well minus winky, but he is still boxing

Nice additions… I listed Marquez though.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a crying shame that heavyweights are becoming extinct in the boxing world. Man I only know one HW that really mattered, where the f**k is Mike Tyson?!?

I seriously don’t think Hatton will put up a good fight against Pac-man. Hatton is skilled, but nowhere near as skilled or aggressive as Paquiao.

He is the Clay Guida of boxing. Punch, hold, punch, hold… I hope Pac destroys him and the Mayweather super-fight is set up. Boxing needs an epic bout like that. The two best pound for pound in the world in one ring.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed he isn’t as skilled as Pacquiao, but to say he’s nowhere near as aggressive? Ricky’s known for his aggression and the fact he fights on the front foot…..though it doesn’t always work!

by UKMMA on Apr 15, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

im gonna say hatton will win. The best way to fight a speed fighter is footwork and going to the body hattons footwork was top notch since training with floyd mayweather snr.

by Nokia on Apr 15, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

If by aggression you mean hugging… LOL. What I mean is he doesn’t throw nearly as many punches as Pac and he’s not known for exchanging big combos inside.

Also, he has a bad habit of getting fat as hell between fights and then he has to cut all that weight in the last couple months. He looked in good shape in an interview I saw last week, but it’s a waste of training time to be cutting fat when you could be getting stronger and working on technique. A lot of guys in MMA balloon up way too much in between fights too (Forest, Rampage, Liddell, and it means they’re not in the shape they could be come fight time. Look at GSP, he has a six-pack year round.

He’s your countryman though, and I get that. I just don’t think he’s ever run into a buzz-saw like Paquiao before. His size advantage will help, but I doubt it will be enough. Pac is a phenom.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, even though I’m English I’ve never really rated Hatton. To me he is all hype and he’s got a padded record. The last time he faced a proper fighter he got destroyed and I don’t see him posing much of a threat to Paquiao. I get so frustrated when I see Hatton eating rubbish and letting his weight go out of control. Its dumb and unprofessional. Personally I think that hes more interested in being a celebrity than a fighter.

Pacman is the real deal and he showed in the De La Hoya fight that size doesn’t matter and that he is a highly skilled fighter. I think a Pacman-Mayweather fight would make a lot more money than a Hatton-Mayweather rematch, as I doubt anyone wants to watch the Hitman get outclassed again.

by David on Apr 15, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, great post. There’s no way Mayweather comes out of retirement to school Ricky again, so as a boxing fan I have to root for Manny.

Hatton is like the boxing version of Bisping. As you mentioned, his competition has been average and he’s beem over-hyped because of the fact that the UK is a huge market. He just isn’t that great, and we’ll see it on the 2nd.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep. Pretty Boy will never step out of the shadows just to school Hitman. but Im sure he’ll show up for a Pacman superfight…and I also think Hatton would only win if he plays dirty. I mean, headbutts and earbites. even if he employs dirty boxing, Pacman will just weave all in and out of the Hitman’s range and his fast punches will appear to be octopus tentacles to Hatton.

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Apr 15, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

True that, Syd. Manny’s speed and footwork are going to make a mockery of Hatton. This is the last time we’ll see Ricky in a marquee fight.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I aint having this! I’m from England and I aint no fan of Hatton, but he’s going to destroy Pac-Man. Sheer weight difference will win him the fight. DLH cocked up his cut in weight and is washed up anyway. Hatton naturally fights at this weight and is a top 10 p4p fighter and in his prime. No way Pac-man can win this.

by attakdog on Apr 16, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

he should appear in movies like “never surrender”

by mike on Apr 15, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

You clearly haven’t seen many Hatton fights. Go watch some of his older fights, think you may change your opinion of him.

by Eagzy on Apr 15, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean the ones against cans? Seen ‘em. It’s easy to look good against lackluster opponents.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Double J, I agree with most things you post but not this. I used to think the same as you for a number of years, but recently Hatton’s fought and beat some real tough opponents, Tszyu, Castillo, Mallinaggi.

If you want to pick on a British world champion who’s made a living knocking out cans and has beens, step forward the pride of the slag heaps, Mr Joke Alzaghe, sorry Joe Calzaghe!

by attakdog on Apr 16, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Boxing better hope that Mayweather doesn’t stay retired. If Pacman wins against Hatton, people will be dying to see that fight. Because really, for CASUAL boxing fans.. the three biggest draws are De La Hoya, Mayweather, and now Pacman after beating De La Hoya.

Fights like Hopkins/Pavlik and Calzaghe/RJJ (which had 24/7 behind it to hype it up) didn’t have as many PPV buys as UFC 96 which was one of the worst looking cards in a long time.

Boxing needs superstars that casual fans can get behind.

by R-Dizzle on Apr 15, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

Mayweather would pick him apart. Mayweather is the Lyota Machida of boxing. He never gets hit. Mayweather has nothing to prove by coming out of retirement. I think Pacquiao would have to viciously call him out and get Mayweather upset before that would ever happen. That’s not Pacquiao’s style though.

by CaptainAmerica on Apr 15, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I want to see Mayweather defeated SO bad. You’re right about how he picks guys apart, but Pac is different. Mayweather has never fought a guy with speed like Pac, who throws so many hard punches nonstop. It would be the first time Mayweather has been pressured by a guy as fast as he is.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Mayweather will come out of retirement if his massive ego is threatened. If Pac holds claim to the P4P crown, and a huge pay-day is is waiting for Mayweather as well as the chance to prove he is the very best, he will do it.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s true to a certain extent JJ. The thing is, will Mayweather still want to cash in on a superfight with all his bling? He’s too rich to fight. But the ego part you’re talking about could be true though…

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Apr 15, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Pacquiao has been beaten by Morales and I believe he went to a draw with Marquez. Now do you think either of those two would stand a chance against Mayweather? I don’t. Trust me, I don’t like Mayweather but the guy is just that good. I fear we are going to see the same thing with Lyoto. If the guy is untouchable then he is unbeatable.

by CaptainAmerica on Apr 15, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Pac destroyed Morales after that, and Marquez is one of the best P4P in the world, and his style just gives Pac problems.

While Pac was fighting EVERYBODY, Mayweather was ducking the best guys. Mayweather always fights the safe fight, while Pac is a warrior who takes chances in there. Mayweather’s defence and speed is amazing, but mark my words, if this fight happens Pac will give Gayweather all he can handle.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 15, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

True that. And also, Pac is not the same type of fighter when he fought Morales. Man he doesn’t have any defense during that time, just pure offensive onslaughts which are very prone to counters, which Morales is good at. Marquez is sh*t!

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Apr 15, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, Pacquiao has had stiffer competition. And I like the Gayweather comment! It would be a hell of fight. I just think Mayweather would get the decision. It’s my opinion that Pacquiao’s success is attributed to his foot work. The way he bounces around in the ring really throws people off. I believe Mayweather would time this and use his amazing hand speed to pick him apart. Good debate but we are dreaming because it will never happen.

by CaptainAmerica on Apr 15, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, yeah, Mayweather is probably scared of what Manny brings to the table. A guy can dream, though!

I appreciate good jitz, but I haven’t done it my entire life like I have boxing, kickboxing and karate. Plus I love KOs. So Abu Dhabi would probably bore the crap out of me.

I’m one of the BJJ purists here. If I was a fighter, I don’t think there would be anything better than doing something to make the other fighter say “Let go, I don’t want to fight anymore”. Boxing… ehh, not so much interest to me. I like kickboxing/Thai boxing better.. More versatility.

also anderson silva, vitor belfort, tim silvia, frank shamrock andre arlovski..all want to box…..because theyve been waiting for the prophecy of Dana white and the gracies(yeah the gracies started the ufc and they said the same thing 15 years ago) that mma would replace boxing..but it hasnt happen and wont happen so they just want to switch careers

by dana on Apr 15, 2009 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

I think kids coming up would much rather get into MMA as opposed 2 straight boxing .. MMA is the fastest growing sport on the planet .. let Pavlik walk through ur local shopping centere and see if anyone notices .. then do the same thing with Forrest Griffin and see what happens ( and Pavlick is a champ !! ) I think mma fighters looking 2 box is more about testing there own skillsw and a one off paycheck rather than that being there preffered sport

by Jakob on Apr 16, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

testing theyre skills? lol what are they kids who want to prove something..its all about the money..they are professionals…ill tell you facts. you want to know why there so much money in boxing? because each country in the world purchase tv rights for each boxing event(thats how big boxing is worldwide—ask dana lol—as proof klitchko vs david haye would be held in 60T capacity statdium in germany)… in the u.s forrest griffin would be recognized..but if both of them go to all the countries in the world..pavlik is more recognized.

by dana on Apr 16, 2009 3:45 AM EDT reply actions

in u.k ricky hatton vs mayweather got 1.8 million ppv buys..and in the philippines 80percent of the popoulation watch manny pacman…do the math if there are 195 countries in the world and each would pay 250,ooo dollars per boxing fight tv rights.how much money is there? thats why all boxing promotions are earning money…im mma only ufc makes money
