very simple if it’s the pride shogun then shogun wins if it’s the out of shape UFC shogun we have been seeing as of late chuck takes this by knock out most likely

i LIKE THE WAY Shogun is moving around during the training clips. His jumping kicks look fluid and I dont think he was moving as fluid back at the coleman fight. HOpefully his knee isn’t an issue anymore, and his Cardio is up to par!
All this talk about Shogun being done cause he cant take Roids is just CRAP!!! I never heard of ANYONE taking Roids to improve Cardio. Last I checked, Roids have Zero effect on a man’s lungs. YOU want better cardio? bust your4 ass in the gym! Simple as that!
This ROID talk is so irrelevant. There is NO strength difference between the shogun of Pride and the UFC shogun. The only difference is that the UFC version has had a bum leg, during both his UFC fights. Its only been 3 months since Shogun’s last fight so I dont know if its back to 100% yet…but I guess we will find out Saturday.
He does look a lot better sparring during this fight then he did during the pre Coleman fight sparring sessions.
I remember prior to the Coleman fight I watched video of Shogun sparring with Dos Santos, and you could tell that Shogun wasn’t 100% yet on his leg….When I see him sparring now, he reminds me of the Whirling Dirvish that ran through Arona/rampage/ and lil Nog in 2005!
Lets hope for the best!

I was thinking the same! His sparring look real good compared to chucky sparring. Those with the roids allegation are plain stupid. If he would have use some he would have, way more definitive muscles, not the fluffy look that he have right now.But anyway,he’s start to look good now.I can’t wait to see him come back better than ever and i will be there to cheer for him.

I can’t see the clip but I like what you’re telling me. I think we might be the only 2 Shogun supporters on this site. I admit that Chuck still has power in both his hands and I admit that I’m really curious to see what training at ATT has done for Chuck’s game but I just think that Shogun was really embarassed after his Coleman fight. I think that’s going to light a fire under him and get him back into the shape we’re used to seeing from him. Shogun is going to come to this fight with better overall skills and he’s going to feed Chuck some knees…right in the ribs and it’s going to topple Chuck…then he’s going to use some Maia-esque trips to get Chuck on his back and he’s going to sink in a nice sub…maybe a beautiful arm triangle and put Chuck to sleep.
I know it’s rare to see Chuck on his back and it’s even more rare for him to get subbed…but this is going to be a statement from Shogun…he’s back! I want to see Shogun and Page fight in their primes so bad.

Buster: I couldn’t agree more with your post!
I also think the FACT that he was embarrassed is really going to pay dividends against Chucky-poo!
I think Shogun can outclass liddell in the Clinch. I think Shogun can trip Chuck down to the mat and submit him as well.
AS long as Shogun has cardio, there wont be too many people that will be able to defeat him.
I drool over the thought of Page vs., Shogun 2 in their primes!

Torn ACL
Phase 1: 1-7 days: reduce swelling
Phase 2:11 weeks: return to weight bearing normal gait without brace
Phase 3:3-4 months: normal running gait, active quad resistance training without pain
Phase 4: 4-6 months return to cutting activities running and jumpming without pain
Phase 5: 6 months return to competition, no pain or swelling as a result of training
You guys do the math….a year and a half just to get back to normal competition!!!

Hell no Buster I am a huge Shogun fan as well and I hope he puts a whipping on Chuck. Not that I dislike Chuck but I feel its more important for me to see a Shogun back to his best to see if he really has got what it takes to properly shake up the division like I think he can whereas Chuck has had his time at the top and is probably never gonna be at his best ever again.

Ca$z I wasn’t busting on Shogun just pointing out how hard it is to comeback from knee surgery…..I have a feeling Chuck is going to try to wrestle in this fight if that’s the case than he might wear Shogun down..that is the injuried Shogun..if he is healed than Shogun muals Chunk in the standup and then submits him!

Roids can indeed help cardio output. That’s why there was always a discussion about Lance Armstrong and wether he took them or not. Often times people with severe asthma will be prescribed certain steroids to strengtehn their lungs in order to improve lung capacity and cardio output.
That being said I do agree that the shogun we have seen in UFC was a victim of his injuries.
by Crayze on Apr 14, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the steroids for your lungs are not anabolic steroids and are legal.
by shogun on Apr 14, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They are legal with a prescription, just like anabolic/androgenic steroids are. People take steroids for other reasons than just performance enhancement. That being said, they type of drug most used by cyclists is called EPO.
by naturalshadow on Apr 14, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right on the money Crayze!
Cardio CAN be improved with sterioids. Often the effect is noticed when you’re not on them anymore, just like in this suspicious case with Shogun. You also tend to loose energy, and kind of act like you’ve had no sleep. You basically lose that “spark” or egde in you.
Just looking at my daughter’s puffer since she has asthma, it contains Fluticasone Propionate. A quick google search…
“a man-made steroid which is related to the naturally-occurring steroid hormone, cortisol or hydrocortisone”
Hmmmm, last time I checked those 2 steroids were…banned!

A lot of people seem to share that opinion—but as I’ve said before, even if “Pride Shogun” shows up, he is not going to win this fight. Chuck is a HORRIBLE match-up for Shogun. Shogun’s well-roundedness—which a lot of people cite as an advantage—is absolutely irrelevant in analyzing the fight. Shogun is not going to be able to take Chuck down, so throw out his excellent submission game. He does not have an unorthodox style (like Jardine), has never relied on “game planning” (like Couture), and does not have explosive, one-punch knockout power (like Rampage and Rashad).
As a huge Shogun fan, I just hope he puts on a good, exciting performance, and this fight turns out like Wanderlei-Chuck where Chuck wins, but Shogun wins a lot of fans and shows he is a contender.

I hope it is as good as Chuck/Wand, but that is asking a lot. That was one of the best fights of all time imo.

Shogun has not lived up to the hype since arriving in the UFC. He may have a future here but climbing the ladder to redemption does not start Saturday. Chuck, 2nd RD KO.

WTF you talking about! In the Forrest fight Shogun gased, agreed, but he was right in there till the end,and i am still not sure forrest would have won if that would have been of that! What was the cause???we all can speculate, but in the Coleman fight,he was just coming back from 2 knees injurys, that take time to heal and it’s understandable that he could’nt put in all the time necessary for his cardio. That been said, now he’s had 4 more months to get prepared injury free. You can be sure that’s he’s gonna comeback to the dominant fighter that he was and even better. It’s just a manner of time, you’ll see.Liddel on the other hand,is losing fight because he is getting older and slower and everybody knows what he bring to the table. Why do you think that he’s got to have Howard Davis now to make him learn to keep is hands up,thats my friend because he’s getting slower.FACT.SHOGUN WILL BE BACK.FACT!WAR SHOGUN

well we’re never gonna see the “Pride Shogun” again that time is over, and he can’t use drugs anymore
by RoB on Apr 14, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well said.
Shogun can win but I don’t bet dust on it, I’m a guy that is stuck with his dust.
“Pride Shogun” is gone and no matter who he beat he’ll never be THAT good of a fighter again.
“Pride Mirco” will never ever be the same again… ever!
For the fight between Shogun and Chuck the outcome is something like this: If Chuck shows up he wins!
by JonnyBoy on Apr 14, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like both fighters no matter who wins, it should be a good/excellent fight, they both had ups and downs on their carrers, but every fighter goes thru that stage in my opinion.
I do think Chuck has the upper had on this fight.
by Jo on Apr 14, 2009 7:45 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Chuck will win and I want him to win. I think this means more for Chuck.
But, I also think that the best days of Shogun still might be ahead of him. I think this guy’s talent is right up there with BJ. He is easily one of the most well rounded fighters in the world. I think given time, he will get better.
I also think that it’s totally unwarranted to say Shogun only performed well because of drugs. I think 90% of fighters in pride used drugs, which makes the plainfield more even.
Also, let’s not forget that Wanderlei Silva, although not the same, showed a lot of guts and endurance in his fight against Chuck…and he was drug free then.
by aman on Apr 14, 2009 8:04 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yep, but what happens to those 90% when they fight somewhere they do tests.. the answer to that is obvious
by RoB on Apr 14, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think so, man. I mean, both Anderson Silva and Rampage Jackson fought in pride. If Anderson Silva’s team members used drugs (which is a speculation) then Silva did as well. Rampage looks like a guy who might have used them as well.
What about Fedor? He fought in the States, what 3 times now? And he is pretty consistent with his wins.
I think the problem is that guys like Minotauro and Wanderlei are simply past their prime. I think that’s all it is. Shogun is young. If his knees recover well, he can still bang in the octagon in the future.

Great post Amen. All this Roid talk is stupid. Its a cardio issue which results from having a bad knee. Bad knee means that you cant train cardio has hard as you would like.
Roids NEVER helped in the cardio department. THey help build strength. So I dont get how Roid talk is even relevant to shogun’s situation!

well, roids isn’t the only thing that’s out there.. look at Sean Sherk, he looks tired in the 2-3 round these days!

I am so sick of hearing aboutt he drug use in PRIDE. I bet that there are a ton of UFC fighters and pro athletes that are using HGH which is the same thing as roids, only difference is that HGH cant be detected. Who is to say that Tito didnt take HGH? look at his head! Who is to say that Carwin n Brock didnt ever take HGH? The point is we will NEVER know who took what in Pride, and I think its a pointless debate…. Say the Pride fighters were on ROIDS in PRIDE, whats there to stop them from using HGH in america? NOT A DAMN THING!!! The Pride fighters could have been taking HGH in Japan instead of Roids…so why would they stop taking HGH while fighting in America? Saying that a fighter is only good because of the drugs he took is just a STUPID statement. if the only thing holding shogun back from competing at the level he used to be at was Roids….He would be jamming his ass filled with HGH….So EVERYONE’s “No roids” argument is just CRAP!!
My point is, until HGH can be detected there ia a possibility that all are favorite fighters and all of our favorite athletes are dirty! FACT!!!!!
I do agree with comparing shopgun’s skills to BJ Penn’s! goOD POINT!
by john on Apr 14, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Responding to John’s comment. actually HGH can be detected, when all the steroid users got busted in baseball that was one of the big ones. Actually, HGH can improve someone’s cardio. HGH has been known to improve heart function and give one more energy by speeding up the process of breaking down fat. Was shogun on steroids in pride? Who really knows, but dont sit here and say that HGH doesnt prove athletic perforamnce or its untraceable. Because the following statement proves otherwise:
Human growth hormone (hGH)
After hGH has been secreted by the pituitary gland or injected by a drug-user it breaks down quite quickly into other products. Scientists in Australia and elsewhere have monitored changes in the bodies of athletes following the administration of hGH and have detected molecular ‘markers’ – usually breakdown products detectable in urine or blood – that could be used as evidence of doping
by Ken on Apr 14, 2009 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shogun has not beenm accused of HGH, he gets accused of Using Roids. To my knowledege, NO uSA state athletic commissions test for HGH….I dont think I am wrong about this, but if someone knows for certainty that I am wrong, please inform me!
Roids is what Shogun is accused of and roids increase strength. its not like Shogun was some meathead wrestler like brock that relied on strength….shogun has always relied on technique!
yOU say that HGH improves Cardio…Bullsh8t! YOU dont just stick a needle in your ass, and wake up with better cardio. There is NO substitute for HARD WORK when it comes to cardio! FACT!!!!
by john on Apr 14, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lesnar and Carwin have both been using HGH/roids and whatever you wanna call it.. I’m pretty sure there were and still are alot of guys in the UFC that uses that kind of sh*t (including Tito), you can just look at some guys and see it!.. HGH may not improve cardio, I don’t know but there are still other things that alot of long distance skiiers are using, a guy like Maurice Greene (the 100 m sprinter) wasn’t green his whole career either and you could see the results of that, the explosiveness and the speed that came from his incredible body.. It’s not called performance-enhancing drugs for nothing, physique and being in shape is crucial for any athlete to get their skills into play for as long and as hard as possible..
by RoB on Apr 14, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Clarification on HGH testing. HGH is ABSOLUTELY detectible. However, a blood test is required. It’s use is still rampant in the team sports because the collective bargaining agreements that exist do not allow for blood testing.
Regarding MMA and substances/drugs that may increase cardio, they absolutely exist. Look at the farce that the Tour De France has become. However, I would question their effectiveness for MMA, as the cardio required is more anarobic or explosive compared to cycling or running. As for testing, several of the “designer drugs” are non-detectable, but what the testers are looking for are masking agents and not neccessarely the steriod itself. Point being, the drugs are typically one step ahead of the tests most of the time.

All that said and to John’s bigger point, it is true that you can’t sit on the couch and eat twinkies, then stick a needle in your ass or take a pill, then wake up the next day with phenomonal cardio.
by CL on Apr 14, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
CL,
That’s not how it works, otherwise it would be like those crazy diet pills you see on TV.
HGH, Steroids, etc. They dramatically increase the effect of everything you do. So even a really good work out will give you results of a crazy heavy work out. It doesn’t matter if you’re lifting weights, cycling, running, squat thrusts, whatever! The results and effect on your body is amplified.
You’re body is wired all the time. Your reactions are quicker, your blood is pumping hard, everything turns on like a switch ready for action.
Steroids are not only about muscle building/bulking.
So John, stop making excuses for Shogun. All the writting is on the wall.
Shogun, Chuck or any other fighter should have ZERO excuse for not coming prepared for a professional fight. I know my ass would be canned if I wasn’t ready to do my job everyday.

UFC Champ, I do agree wholeheartedly with your last point. We won’t have to wait long to see what Shogun will bring on Saturday.
Regarding the rest, I believe I was saying exactly what you are in my post. That steroids/performance enhancers do NOT work like diet pills. Also not mentioned is the long list of health risks associated with use. Everything has a cost.

shogun saying “he has nothing ot lose” is an awful statment to make.. if he loses id say his appeal would be all but gone id love to see rampage knock 7 colours out of him …but then again if liddell wins the rockstar is back on his way to big fights again – just wish he had a bit of fire in his belly in that interview..then again he aint called the iceman 4 nothing!
dont like either fighter, but i think it should be a good fight.
chuck 3rd round tko!

Yes, 3rd KO for Liddell. It’s amazing how one can go from being considered the best to someone who all of the sudden “has nothing to lose”.

I like Liddell here. All gonna come down to which Liddell and which Shogun turn up. Would have loved to see these guys fight when they were both top of the division. Better late than never though.
Going be a good one, but hope Chuck does the business!

Shogun was my favorite fighter but with all the injuries, he hasnt been able to show up. His cardio was never really in question in Pride because most of the time he would finish his opponents right away. So I suspect his cardio especially when it goes the distance. He really needs to learn how to pace himself. If it stays in round 1 I think Shogun has a good chance of pulling a KO, but if it goes the distance Liddell by KO or decision. Shogun cannot commit mistakes or else Liddell will capitalize. But I really don’t think Shogun will win this one. Hope I’m wrong.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see a devastating head-kick KO by Shogun. I don’t think he’s gonna wing it, he’ll have a smarter game plan, this time around, for sure. I like both guys, though I’d like to see a younger Shogun make a name here in the UFC.
by GodDamnMike on Apr 14, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Chuck is very evasive. I think Shogun needs to really pick his spots and not jump in with the flying knee or else chuck will catch him while he is backpedalling. He has to get Chuck when Chuck is close to him either with a knee or a kick. I think Muay Thai knees and leg kicks will be key to a Shogun win.
by remedy on Apr 14, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shogun says he has nothing to lose. As I see it, both fighters have everything to lose and we as fans will probably lose in any case. If Liddell wins, it might be the last time we see Shogun in the UFC and we will lose out on seeing him progress. Shogun is a young fighter and has at least 10 years of fighting left in him. If Shogun wins, it will probably be the last time we see Liddell in the Octagon, but that will mean his career is over anyway.
I would love to see Liddell win, but for the longevity on the sport and young fighters, it will be best if Shogun wins and wins decisively. If Shogun restores his Pride glory, we are looking at a fighter that will produce amazing fights.

Chuck is already a legend no matter what happens in this fight, I do like chuck but, in the other hand I am in awe of shoguns skill. Ya, he gassed in his last couple of fights but if he shows up with decent cardio I say it doesn’t matter who you are you are in trouble. Just before his fight with forest he had knee problems and to top it off he had just got married, ok escuses escuses, doesn’t matter you are right, there really should be no escuses for someone of his caliber of fighter, well to bad, did you ever experience life? shit happens, he says that by training up in america for this fight it has really helped him focus again and really train, if this turns out to be the truth look out chuck!! Thats all I have to say and yes I am rootin’ for shogun, no disrespect toward chuck is intended in any way.
