Ed Herman: It's win or get cut at UFC 97

Props: FightHype.com
Quoteworthy:
"I think this is going to be a really exciting fight. Hopefully it's Fight of the Night or Ass Whooping of the Night. I'm looking to finish him as fast as I can...I've lost two in a row and if I lose another fight, the UFC will probably cut me so I'm trying to keep my job. It's rough times. It's a bad economy, so I gotta keep my damn job so I can keep living. I respect Loiseau, but on the 18th, I'm going in there to beat his ass."
Ed Herman — middleweight finalist on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 — talks about his upcoming fight with hometown favorite David Loiseau at UFC 97 from The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18. "Short Fuse" is looking to rebound from back-to-back losses and prevent himself from being a victim of a contractual "Spring Cleaning." That might not be so easy against "The Crow," who also is fighting to remain on the UFC roster. The former middleweight contender was invited back to the Octagon after putting together a solid 4-2 record outside of the promotion. Loser leaves town? Perhaps not if they can pull off fight of the night. What say you?

I pud money on Ed. He’s the underdog which I think is a mistake. A lot has changed and competition has improved dramatically since the crow last fought in the UFC. Even if he’s still a better fighter, but comes back rusty I think Ed stands a solid chance. Plus he has some real motivation and he’s an angry redhead.

I think you’re right, Herman might be too much for Loiseau at this point. But I hope Herman gets whupped likre the red-headed stepchild he probably is.

Herman will win this fight. Crow is a mental midget, but he is very skilled. It shouldnt be hard for Herman to break him!
I dont really like this whole, win or get cut crap! If a fighter is good enough to fight in the UFC, then he is good enough to continue fighting as long as he is performing well. YOu dont neede to win, to perform well. I dont really care for Ed but I dont think he should be fighting for his job. There is enough pressure on fighters as it is…he shouldnt need this added pressure. When you face good competition, you mightr lose 3 in a row…but that doesnt mean you dont belong in the UFC.
I promise you one thing…Ed Herman deserves to be in the UFC at the present moment over most TUF alumni from the past 2 seasons…thats for sure! He is more ready today, then most of them…yet the UFC waste main card slots on great ppv’s to build up crap fighters that are never going to be better then Herman, that will end up in Ed’s position 2 years from now anyway! For Example: Kristof!

Cro cop on Croation TV:
“I’m in a final stage of my career. I don’t know if that means I have 3, 5 10 or 15 fights left but I know one thing for sure – this is going to be the most productive part of my career”
“I’ve resolved in my head things that were bothering me. I had to answer the question do I still want to train so hard every day. And now I’m certain that I do. It’s not about the money anymore.”
“I’ve made enough money though out my career. I realized I don’t know how to live without fighting. And people who ask me why don’t I end my career with 35 years…well, maybe they didn’t have anything in their lives they were devoted to 100%. I’m just asking them to try to understand me, I can’t live without fighting. So please people, stop giving me advice to quit! I know one thing now, One day when I stop fighting – a part of me will certainly die."
“My recovery is going better than any doctor expected. I believe my first fight could be on DREAM 9.”

yeah John, I agree. Even an even record in the UFC is respectible IMO. 5-5 or 10-10 against the best in the world is good if you ask me.

Excuse my grammar n sh*T! I do a lot of my posting while I am in class, and I just post quickly without proof reading because I am trying to post and listen to my teachers at the same time. Thats why I make all the mistakes that I do on a daily basis.

Totally dumb question, so forgive me in advance. In canada are black people ever referred to as african-canadians, as they are referred to as african-americans here in the U.S.? I know there are several Canadian maniacs, so I figured I would ask.

In Canada we are wearing too many parkas and ski masks to tell if anyone is black.
If it did thaw out long enough to go around without ski goggles, we would all apologize profusely to the black dude for whatever transgressions our neighbors to the south may have inflicted upon him and his ancestors… and then we’d invite him into our snow caves for some whale blubber.

That is kinda why I posed the question. a buddy of mine got laid off recently. Black man of cuban decent. I was telling my wife about it, and she had made a comment about how he is the only african american that I work with, he could propbably make a case.. blah, blah blah. and i thought it was funny that she was trying to be respectful and call him african-american, but he is actually just american and cuban-american if anything.
by James S on Apr 13, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yup, kinda sucks but yes, he has a case!
by kevin on Apr 13, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Um No, not that I have ever heard. And that’s not a dumb question by the way. To be honest, I think that, as Canadians, we feel like it would be rude to assume that said black person’s ancestry is specifically African. I mean geeze, what if they’re Jamaican or something? One wouldn’t want to offend. ;)
by Canucklehead on Apr 13, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ya know most people that are what you black, don’t seem to have the need to say that they are “African” anything up here, they know where they are from and as Canucks we respect that and treat all races as equals. We are so nice eh, but like everwhere there are racist idiots, but we seem to have a very small percentage in the true north.
by bigmcmac on Apr 13, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
heres how i describe it. if someone asked who Mark(the name of the black guy i knew) was, and he was standing in the middle of a room of white guys, i would describe him as the black guy just over there. if there were more than one i would describe him as the fat black or short black guy over there. if there were alot of black guys, then i would be lost. but in western canada that will almost never happen. in canada most black people arent offended by the term black, for that is what they are. no more offended than i would being called white. its not a racsist term, its a physical definition.

I’m not a Mac hater.
I thought he gave that pussy Blake the tongue-lashing he deserved on TUF. That kid was a poser and faked that knee injury. He made Richie friggin’ hightower look like Bruce Lee in that fight, and folded like a lawn chair the second he felt contact.
Yeah, Mac comes off as a little arrogant sometimes, but I respect his choice of living a vegan lifestyle. I think it’s a sad state of affairs when he gets hated on on these boards because he respects animal rights. I’m not a vegetarian but I admire and understand those who are. Check out a slaughterhouse some time, it’s disturbing.
And he’s a pretty damn good fighter. Huggy Bear didn’t do shit to Mac, I don’t believe in awarding points for lay ’n pray.
Compared to some of the other douchebags that came out of TUF, Mac’s OK in my book.

I dont have that much of a problem with Mac either. I will admit to watching Mach Sakurai KO’ing his head off about 100 times. lol
Mac is a better fighter then half the fighters produced from TUF so I dont hate on him, and he is from PA….but god is he a douche! Remember him sticking up for Andy “The k-1 striker” Wang? LMAO

Herman’s good, and i like him a lot. He was 50-50 with Belcher, and could have gotten the decision, and he did better against Damien Maia than either Sonnen or Quarry.
But as a good Canadian I gotta root for The Crow.
If Herman gets cut, he’ll be back in within a year.
by pancake head on Apr 13, 2009 3:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t understand all the Ed Herman hate on this post. Win or lose he brings it, and his fights are generally entertaining. He’s a fighter, and as fight fans, isn’t that what we ask of those we watch? Regarding his losses, his one consistent problem has been recklessly falling into submissions. I expect his fight with The Crow to be a good one.

Unless your name is Houston Alexander, in which case you can lose three fights where you get demolished in round 1 and still stay in, or even worse, if your name is Patrick Cote you can lose 4 in a row and stay in and even get put into a title shot because the UFC is so desperate to find Middleweight contenders.
by sdow on Apr 13, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
??? Cote’s never lost four in a row. He lost 2 in a row BACK IN 2005.
Since then he went 7-2, losing the TUF final to Lutter, and then the injury in his title fight. Betweeen those two losses he WON FIVE IN A ROW.
Nice fact checking sdow.
by pancake head on Apr 13, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually you apparently are a Cote Nuthugger because I did check. Go to UFC.com go to the fighters tab and go to cote. You will see that he lost 4 IN A ROW. Ortiz, Doerksen, Leben, and finally, Lutter.
by sdow on Apr 13, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
go to cote’s wikipedia page for his FULL FIGHT RECORD. ufc.com only lists his ufc fights.
he NEVER LOST 4 IN A ROW.
by pancake head on Apr 14, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cote never lost 4 in a row, he lost 4 times inside the octagon but they were not 4 consecutive losses and after losing to lutter, he rattled off impressive wins vs. smith, day, grove, mcfedries, and almedia ….so he deserved that title shot
by wm133 on Apr 13, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cote DID lose four in a row. Check UFC.com. He lost to Ortiz, Doerksen, Leben and finally Lutter. He then won 4 in a row before he got a title shot.
by sdow on Apr 13, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ufc.com’s fight history only lists ufc fights. he won his next fight after losing to ortiz. then he lost back-to-back against deorkson and leben. THEN HE WAS CUT. then he won two in a row against macdonald and mahood. THEN HE WAS BROUGHT BACK FOR TUF. Lost to Lutter. then won four in a row.
find cote’s wikipedia page for his full record. not just ufc fights, and then conclude UFC never let him go after losing two in a row.

Herman has been exposed. He never was that good, and was nothing more than a big mouth. Same as Kendall Grove. I cant see his place in the UFC. He’s never going to be a contender or anywhere near it. Not even a gate keeper, and theres not much point having a TUF alumni fighting and losing fights on undercards and UFNs.

Most of you guys dont have a clue about mma. David Loiseau did not match-up good with a very tough and talented grappler like Ed Herman. It takes mma skill to defend against the strengths the “Crow” brings to the ring. Herman wouldn’t mind going standup just to prove a point , like he did with Belcher. But this " loose and leave " pressure forces a fighter to minimize risk of defeat. Herman put a controlled pounding on the very fighter you all said would destroy him. That takes talent and versatility. It’s referred to as “well rounded” in the mma. Maybe you should talk to mma professionals that have trained with him or fought him. You would get the same response from all…he deserves to fight in the UFC and my bet is you will have many years ahead to continue hating the “Shortfuse” as he continues to mature and improve on a very solid career.
