UFC 99 PLAY-BY-PLAY LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:
Jesse Holland here guest blogging LIVE from Johnny Utah's to cover bout numero uno as Cro Cop looks to return to heavyweight greatness against Mustapha Al-Turk. Remember, play-by-play starts from the bottom up. Bottoms up!
No Cop! Okay, a little change of plans as the first event of the day will be Dan Hardy vs. Marcus Davis.
Davis vs. Hardy is early contender for Fight of the Night with that brutal back-and-forth affair. Now we fast-forward to Fisher vs. Uno.
Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva (195-pound limit)
Round one: Nice straight left from Ace. Leg kick from Silva. Wanderlei swinging for the fences but doesnt connect. Nice body kick from Franklin. Silva just misses a big head kick. Good body kick from Franklin but Silva catches the leg and gets a big take down. Ace with full guard. Franklin scrambles to his feet and now gets a take down of his own and is on top. Franklin mounts and now has the back and is landing some good punches. Silva with a small cut on his nose. Thats the bell, good action and a close round. I give it narrowly to Franklin 10-9.
Round two: Both guys go for leg kicks. Nice body kick from Silva. Both fighters meet and exchange punches. Nice looping right from Silva just misses. Leg kick from Franklin. Body kick from Ace. Franklin with a stiff jab and puts Silva on his back. Silva right back to his feet hes not hurt what so ever. Body kick from Franklin. Nice right from Ace. Weak head kick from Silva. Silva throwing big bombing rights trying to connect. Good body kick from Franklin. Silva looked very tired. Nice head kick from Silva. Great left right combo wobbles Franklin and Ace is hurt bad. Ace with a body kick and Silva with another right and now their up against the fence and Silva lands another good right. High kick from Ace but he slips as Silva falls. Their both toe to toe again and thats the bell. Tough round to call, id say Silva for his power in exchanges and hurting Franklin.
Round three: Silva throwing bombs but misses. Leg kick from Silva. Franklin with a good jab and then a great left hook. Nice right from Franklin. Groin kick from Franklin brief stoppage. Franklin with a good shot. Silva charges in and clips Ace with a big left and then a good knee from the clinch by Silva. Weak head kick from Silva no damage. Jab from Ace. Leg kick from Silva. Ace with right left combo but a weak one. Silva looking for the haymaker. Jab from Ace. Left from Silva and a big right from Silva and now Wanderlei is throwing bombs at ace and lands a knee. Ace with a take down and Silva back to his feet and Franklin lands a good left and now Silva with elbows at Franklin with him on his back and Franklin with punches to finish the round. Thats the bell, a extremely close close round. Id lean towards Silva but thats my heart talking my head tells me that Rich Franklin stole the last round with a take down and won the fight.
Final result: Rich Franklin defeats Wanderlei Silva via Unanimous Decision
-end-
Cain Velasquez vs. Cheick Kongo (265-pound limit)
Round one: Kongo lands a quick right and then another big right and Cain's knees buckle and he falls. Cain with a take down to avoid being finished he has to be hurt. Kongo gets up briefly and then gets top position but Cain reverses and is back on top and now in side control. Cain now mounts and has a choke almost locked in. Kongo works his way to his feet but Valasquez with a big take down. Right back into side control. Cain now again with a full mount and Kongo gives up his back again, and Cain is just teeing off with punches from behind. Cain keeps punching and Kongo back to his feet but Cain with another HUGE slam and hes throwing around the bigger guy like a rag doll. Kongo to his knees and has a single leg and is looking to use it to stand up but Cain keeps control. Kongo to his feet and lands a nice knee and thats the bell. Interesting round, Kongo hurts Cain bad early but then Valasquez recovers and dominates the rest of the fight with vicious ground and pound, 10-9 Cain.
Round two: Cain with a good right. Kongo with a knee and Cain with a right. Cain rushes in and Kongo lands another HUGE right and Cain is rocked again and falls. WOW. Now both fighters are clinched against the fence. Velazquez charges forward with another big take down. Cain with the back and then turns over Kongo to his back. Kongo switches right away and gives up his back again. Cain now relentless with his punches and Kongo is gassing out. Kongo to his feet briefly and Cain just takes him down right away once again. Nice backward elbow from Kongo. Cain riding out on Kongos back and doing damage with punches and now Cain with a big knee to the side. Another big monstrous knee and some hammer fists from Valasquez. Cain jumps right into a full mount and Kongo is trying to escape and thats the bell. Again a weird round Cain gets dropped once again by a Kongo punch and yet he recovers AGAIN to win the round with awesome ground and pound. 10-9 Cain. Kongo needs a KO.
Round three: Kongo with a sharp stiff right and it snaps back Cains head and now Kongo is looking for a take down and briefly gets one but now Valasquez reverses position and is on Kongos back once again pounding away with big big punches. Valasquez is bleeding now. Valasquez is still just methodically pounding away on Kongo. Kongo to his feet and is now landing some knees to the stomach and Cain looks winded. Kongo now lands a punch and Cain looks rocked AGAIN, but once again Valasquez gets the take down and is in a dominant side control position with one of Kongos arms pinned to the mat. Cain now with the full mount. Kongo fighting his heart out looking to throw punches from the bottom of a full mount. Cain ending the round with another barrage of punches. Thats the bell, what an interesting fight. Kongo landed 3 separate punches that could have easily finished the fight and ones that did hurt Valasquez BAD. But Cain Valasquez answered with amazing will and awesome vicious relentless ground and pound.
Final result: Cain Velasquez defeats Chiek Kongo via Unanimous Decision
-end-
Mike Swick vs. Ben Saunders (170-pound limit)
Round one: Saunders charges forward, and Swick lands on top in Saunders full guard. Saunders holding on looking for a stand up from the ref. Saunders with double butterfly guard now. Swick just peppering Saunders side with punches. The fans are booing looking for more action. Swick still pounding away with body shots. Swick's asks Saunders if hes going to hold all night and Saunders responds stand back up then bitch. Swick goes for a brief guillotine and then bails out. Saunders looking for rubber guard. Saunders now with an upkick. Swick dives right back into guard. Great stinging body kick from Saunders. Swick with a decent combo but most missed. Up against the cage and Saunders with a knee. Great knee from the body clinch by Saunders. Knee to the body from Saunders. Thats the bell. A boring boring start, have to give it to Swick for Octagon control.
Round two: Head kick from Saunders partially blocked. Swick with two good knees from the clinch and Saunders answers with a couple of his own to the body. Swick falls on top right into the mount, but Saunders with a quick hip escape and now with butterfly guard. Back to the feet. Head kick from Saunders not much damage though. Knees from Swick with a quick clinch. Saunders with a knee of his own. Leg kick from Saunders and a right from Swick. Front kick from Saunders. Swick with a big left and then he charges forward with a lighting quick combo and then he lands a big right that drops Saunders and he finishes him off with 3 vicious left hooks. Great KO from Swick and he finally looked like the Mike Swick that everyone saw in his early Octagon days.
Final result: Mike Swick defeats Ben Saunders via TKO (Strikes) Round 2
-end-
Mirko Filipovic vs. Mustapha Al-Turk (265-pound limit)
Round one: Turk with an overhand right and then leg kick and another. Turk goes for a shot and Cro Cop shrugs him off. Leg kick from Turk. Mirko with a left. Leg kick from Turk.
Round two:Cro cop opens up and lands a HUGE left and then right, then he lands two MONSTER lefts and Turk falls. Mirko lets him stand up, Cro Cop lands another big left and Turk is holding his head. Mirko charges in and lands another 2 big rights and Turk falls and Mirko lands a big left and thats it the fights over. Now that we watch the replay it shows that Mirko unintentionally poked Al-Turks eye and that is what seemed to help end the fight. Either way its a win for Mirko.
Final result: Mirko Filipovic defeats Mustapha Al-Turk via TKO (Strikes) Round 1
-end-
Spencer Fisher vs. Caol Uno (155-pound limit)
Round one: Fisher low kicks. Uno shoots and gets stuffed. They stand but not much takes place as they go to the cage still clinched. Knees by Fisher. Uno turns him around and hugs him. Boos trickle down from the crowd. Ref mercifully separates them. Low kick by Uno. Huge low kick lands for Fisher. Right hand connects for Fisher. Uno shoots again and nice sprawl from "King" denies him. They're up against the fence again. Boos getting louder. Uno with a marshmallow combo to end the round. Yawn.
Round two: Low kick by Fisher. Uno uses the opening to shoot and finally gets him down. Fisher muscles his way back up. Back on the feet and Uno with a failed shoot. Nice low kick by Fisher. Uno answers with one of his own. Uno shoots and gets nothing. They roll over and Uno lands on top. Uno busy but Fisher escapes. They clinch and go to the cage. Uno changes levels and Fisher isn't having it. And again. Nice sweep by Uno. Back up again and more hugging. Knee lands for Uno. Fisher with one of his own and Uno pulls guard. Fisher working for position but Uno scrambles out. Round over.
Round three: Uno charges and pushes him to the cage. Failed sweep by Uno and Fisher stuns him with a knee. Uno still pushing forward. Uno works for a takedown and gets it. Unfortunately nothing else happens for about a minute as they hug against the cage. Back on the feet and Uno slips delivering a low kick. Right hook by Fisher but Uno pulls guard. Back up again and right back to the cage. Fisher strikes and Uno shoots. Uno finds his way on top and lands a few shots but little damage is inflicted. Fisher covering up. Round ends with Uno on top blasting Fisher.
Final result: Spencer Fisher defeats Caol Uno via unanimous decision
-end-
Marcus Davis vs. Dan Hardy (170-pound limit)
Round one: Hardy smiling. Davis scowling. Low kick by Davis. Another. Davis charges and they go to the cage. They struggle for position. Lots of hugging. Davis muscles him down. Davis to mount. RAPE CHOKE! Hardy scrambles. Evil Dead style dual thumbs to the eyes by Davis. WTF? Hardy rolls and Davis takes his back. Davis landing punches. Hardy being overpowered. Davis looks for a guillotine but releases. Hardy gets to his feet. Huge elbow lands for Hardy. Then a knee. Davis wobbly. Fast clinch by Davis. Knees by Hardy to end the round.
Round two: They exchange low kicks. Low kick lands for Hardy. Then Davis. Davis with a stiff jab. Nice left by Davis. Low kick by Hardy. They start swinging and both connect. Quick clinch and Davis eats a HUGE knee. Davis crumbles. Hardy on top. Davis survives and looks for a triangle. Davis locks up an arm but Hardy escapes. Elbow lands for Hardy. Davis busy from bottom. Ref stands them up. They clinch and go to the cage. Then back away. Davis goes for a low kick and eats a big punch. Davis answers with one of his own and then shoots and takes Hardy down. Action-packed round. Davis on top with body shots to end the round.
Round three: Stinging left from Davis drops Hardy. Davis charges and works from Hardy's guard. Body shots by Davis. Hardy with a stingie guard. Davis busy and rolls for a foot but Hardy powers out. Quick scramble and they're back to their feet. Quick clinch and to the cage they go. Hardy with a knee to the body and then a takedown. HUGE elbow lands for Hardy and literally tears Davis' face in half. Ref calls for a cut check on Davis. He gets cleared to return and they're back on the ground to restart. Hammer fists by Hardy. Ref stands them up. Davis blinded by blood. High kick misses for Hardy. Davis rushes and pushes him to the cage as time expires.
Final result: Dan Hardy defeats Marcus Davis via split decision

to bad for wanderlei he has to fight rich I just hope UFC doesn’t cut him after rich franklin beats him

keep dreaming, Wanerlei is still a top contendor,As is Franklin. Losing for either fighter doesnt mean shit. Both fighers are still great contenders.

me neither, but they won’t.. only thing the UFC cares about and why they even made this matchup is to make money.. they don’t care about these guys career’s at all, they couldn’t care less if Wanderlei or Rich loses, all they need is for them to sell this card and make them money while they can..
loser of this fight is basically done!

Yeah I got Franklin beating him also. And no, I don’t think they’ll cut him.

is it just me or do a lot of these fights seem 1 sided? and i don’t see how you put mike swick up that high kind of a weak card, still better then most other shows but not ppv worthy
by randy murders on Apr 12, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have to disagree. I think Franklin vs Wanderlei is an epic match-up between two future HOFers.
Swick/Saunders has potential
Davis/Hardy has Knockout of the Night written all over it
Fisher/Uno has Fight of the NIght potential

randy, are you serious? This card is stacked, I am pumped for this card! 6 fights guarenteed first of all! Also, Cro COp is back, Uno is back, decent main event, and 3 other exciting fights that all could end violently!!

Overall, I think the matchups are great. A tremendous amount of discussion has been generated with support for each fighter coming from all over the place for a variety of reasons.
To me, this is a great card in the making.

I wont buy this at all. Rich Franklin is not a main event fighter.
by JRE on Apr 12, 2009 9:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i wouldn’t say that he did hold the strap for quite some time, and this main event is a solid one.. the undercard seems weak but the good ones always seem that way, it should be a spike tv card though

Are you on crack? Although this is not really a fight that leads to anything like a title shot, it’s still a compelling fight. Every fight Franklin is in is compelling. This guy has won almost all of his fights easily. And the few fights he has lost, have been to the best of the best. His last fight with Hendo, was a close one and might have been different if he hadn’t been poked in the eye. Franklin is a superman, with his only kryptonite being the Spider and the Dragon.

franklin is something insane like 11 and 3 in the ufc and you say something like that? ouch

Once again JRE is a putz man. ive rebutted his statement against franklin twice now. he wants someone knocked out or he will boycott righ franklin. JRE is just a franklin hater thats all and wont come out and say it at least John is honest about his opinions. JRE think franklin is a boring fighter because of the hendo fight(rich has gone to decision 3 times in his career). you know….its hard to get a fight in fast pace when two fighter are that good and evenly matched. Im sorry fighter are too smart to consider your comments as guidelines in their twilight of their careers. because you hate one fighter you demand their health be put on the line just for you sorry lil man it wont happen until then base your bias intents with facts and then admit you hate franklin. anyways its funny how JRE states but offers no rebuttle.

Give me a minute, I’m not online all day like your boy John, so you’ll have to bear with me. Just so you know that i’m not hiding my opinion, I HATE TO WATCH RICH FRANKLIN FIGHT. I’m not being dishonest about a g*d d*mn thing so jump to all the conclusions you like but it doesnt change sh*t. I never seem to find myself being entertained while watching a Rich Franklin fight, unless he’s on the receiving end of of a brutal knock out. And it’s not because I don’t give him the benefit of the doubt, thats just how I feel and I can respect the fact that he does have fans who love him, and thats cool because I dont hate on people for not being entertained by my personal favorite fighter to watch (Machida). By the way Sancho why dont you use spell check or have someone edit your posts for you so you dont sound like a third grader, lil man

But Wanderlei Silva is, and the only time I plop down $50 is when Wand is fighting.
It will be exciting, could last 30 seconds, or the full 3 rounds, but it’s never a dance when Wand gets in the cage.

Great card. The Swick v Saunders is going to be sick. For those who think Wanderlei will be cut if he loses, do not worry .. he has at least three more fights in him.
If he loses this one, it’s ok cause he is dropping to 185 .. if he loses the first one there, he found it hard to cut weight … so we will see the axe murder at least 3 more times.

Not much people are talkin bout the Swick/Saunders fight or the Uno/Fisher fight.

I am happy to know that Wanderlei Silva is popular enough where his fight with Rich Franklin can carry the whole event. Although, Rich Franklin is also one of the more popular fighters in Canada.
by aman on Apr 13, 2009 3:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This event doesn’t get me too hyped up, but I’m excited for it nonetheless, and will watch it no matter what.
I’m thinking the Franklin fight will go down with Wanderlei abandoning gameplan and intelligent thinking, and throwing haymakers and whatnot, trying to make it exciting. Rich will be active with his southpaw jab and low and mid kicks.. Rich wins a tough, but decisive decision, in a potentially action packed fight.
I wonder if they’ll keep Herring, if he loses to Cain. It would be his 2nd loss in two fights to guys who have a combined 6-1 at the time of their fight (Cain_5-0/ Brock_1-1). Herring didn’t put up any fight vs Brock, and I think if he loses this, he could be cut from the UFC. I think he would make it good in Strikeforce now, matching up vs Grim, Alistair, or even Arlovski. I think Cain will win this.
The Swick/Saunders fight. I’m a big fan since Ben’s mauling of that one guy and since I met him at the UFN in Tampa. The guy is cool as hell. I really like him and I hope he sticks around, but I believe exp will be the difference here, and I think Swick will win by TKO or decision. You cant really gauge Ben’s skills because he hasn’t fought anyone near his level, and Swick has submitted Diesel Riggs, went 3 rounds vs the Crow and Davis, and KO’d Goulet! Ok ok, so the last one isn’t impressive, but the rest is. So, Swick FTW, in the FIGHT OF THE NIGHT! Neither guy’s rankings are going to go down after this fight.
Spencer/Uno should be a solid scrap. A decision more than likely. Not sure who to pick. Spence used to seem like an upper echelon fighter till Hermes exposed him. I predict a split decision for the King
Davis/Hardy. I think Hardy may have more power, but Davis pwns him in technique and quickness. Davis’ KOs are more impressive than Hardy’s KO over Markham, and that fight was too quick for me to really give an accurate prediction (its the only time I’ve seen him fight). I’ll say Davis, he has more ways to win in my book, and has shown it will be alot to put him away. Davis by TKO.
For the Undercard: Etim, Hathaway, and Taylor. The others I don’t care too much about. I think Etim has a WORLD of potential. The guy has a sick reach and devastating striking. He pretty damn quick too. Hathaway impressed me with his debut, and I think he will become a force later on. And who doesn’t like Paul Taylor? I thought he won that fight vs Lytle, so I hope he gets back to winning. He needs to stay in the UFC.

I hope Marcus Davis beats the snot out of that punk Hardy… calling Davis a “Plastic Paddy” isn’t something us Irish-American take too well.
Oh, one thing about Ben Saunders…
On Countdown to UFC 99 his people call him “fearless” – I say he’s just stupid for thinking he can hang with Mike Swick!!
My calls for the event:
Etim
Mirko
Uno
Kongo
Swick
Davis

Man the way they are hyping the fight on the pre Pay Per View stuff it’s almost like the UFC is hoping Wanderlei wins so he can tangle with Anderson for the 185 pound strap. While that would definitely be a badass fight, Wanderlei should not get a title shot if he takes Franklin. Guys like Marquardt, Meia, and Okami are top contenders at this point and I hope the UFC doesn’t screw those guys over just because we all want to see the super fight. I just found it weird that during the Franklin-W. Silva fight talk they have talked a lot about the Wanderlei-Anderson rivalry like they are foreshadowing for a future event…I dunno maybe I’m being paranoid here. They gave Brock a title shot after 1 win so who knows?

either way it was a close fight…and a good one!!~
by stinky~fingers on Jun 13, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah it was close, but that cut in the 3rd sealed it. neither guy dominated in positioning, so you look at damage dealt.
by Syn on Jun 13, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hehe I’m glad Dan got it anyway! whoever is doing the write up for mania cracked me up, " HUGE elbow lands for Hardy and literally tears Davis’ face in half." Haha priceless mental image! Swick did the same thing to him
by JRE on Jun 13, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A agree with stinky, it was close, could have gone either way easily.
by Scuds on Jun 13, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No chance. Did you see Davis’ face????
R1 Davis – R2 Hardy – R3 Hardy by face smashing dominance!
Davis did NOTHING on the ground other than when he was under Hardy going for subs.
Should have been a UD but I’ll take the split.
by Ca$z on Jun 13, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I had Hardy. He just did more. Landed the better shots, was in better shape. And Davis did very little on the ground.
by UK_Chris on Jun 13, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You had Hardy? big surprise…Anyway Hardy got the win by landing 3 big shots. A standing elbow, knee to the face, and an elbow in top position. Scoring is based on effective striking, grappling and octagon control. Davis controlled Hardy and the octagon for most of the fight. First 2 rounds to Davis, 3rd to Hardy. Davis won 29-28.
Cutting a guy’s nose doesn’t mean you won the fight.

by UK_Chris on Jun 13, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I had Davis 2-1. All Hardy did in the 3rd was admittedly one great elbow that busted Davis’ nose. Davis knocked him down at the beginning of the 3rd and then attempted a succession of subs after that. So close though that it’s hard to complain either way.
by MK on Jun 13, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hardy fucked up Davis. Marcus controlled more, but I have to say, I was happy that the judges gave the fight to the guy who actually did the most damage. Plus, I won some money. w00t!

Disagree, uno did not one bit of damage. Fisher had relentless knees and punches. As well as stuffed his stake downs
by RedDog on Jun 13, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
fisher didn’t do any damage either. all he did was defend everything from Uno in the 2nd, and Uno won the 3rd from the last minute or so. one of the few instances where the last minute wins a fight.
here i got swick by decision. fotn

Maybe in round 1 but not much in r2 & 3.
Judges are not always in the best position to see all the grappling aspects and see mainly strikes.
by Ca$z on Jun 13, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sometimes when you want someone to win so bad you don’t watch objectively. Uno did nothing until the final 1:30. You can win an entire fight like that. Even if Fisher didn’t do a lot himself, he still easily won rnd 1 & 2 and arguably rnd 3

Is there a dumber fighter anywhere than Kongo? He was whooping Cain’s ass on the feet, then kept trying to go to the ground with an All-American wrestler. What an idiot. He even had plenty of chances in the clinch to back away and didn’t do that either. He deserved that beating.

As soon as Carwin or Lesnar gets their hands on Velasquez it will be lights out for Cain.
He should be trying to cut to 205 after that. He relied solely on his wrestling which was fairly boring to watch especially against someone with virtually zero takedown defense.
He will be exposed by a true heavyweight I feel.
Good performance all the same.

Like Joe said, this fight opened up a bunch of questions about both fighters… Cain has great control, but man, where was the power? Also, it looks like he needs work on his submissions, there were a bunch of times where it looked like a good BJJ guy would have been able to end it.
by Scuds on Jun 13, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
THATS WHAT A MEXICAN IS ALL ABOUT!!!!!!!! What a fight! Still, I wonder how he would do against a wrestler? Maybe he should go to LHW.

Rogan went on and on about being unimpressed with dominant win over Kongo. To me, to survive punches like that means Cain’s got a chin! And then to dominate Kongo that way, I’ve never seen Kongo beat up like that in my life.

by Scuds on Jun 13, 2009 5:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Sorry, but I did not gain any respect for Cain after that performance. He just fought someone who is built for his style. Takethem down and throw meaningless punches. Lesnar/Carwin two big wrestlers who will have their way with him. Mir, Nog, two jiu-jitsu guys who will have their way with him. Couture, wrestler (although undersized) will out work cain. I just dont’ see the hype yet. Beat one of the 5 previously mentioned names and I will eat crow.

In actual fact it was very similar to Lesnor/Herring. I dont know why people are hating on Cain. He won the fight easily. How can you judge a fighter after a dominating victory against potential future matches? Its only his 6th fight! We should be celebrating the fact the UFC HW division is looking great.
Kongo is big and strong, so you cant judge the fact it didnt end on Cain not having power. Cain DOES have a chin, the knockdowns were both flush on the spot and he got up from both. As for submissions, obviously he needs work, but hes in the same boat as Lesnor.
He looked very similar to Lesnor….mark my words, this guy is going to go far.

by RT on Jun 13, 2009 5:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No way, that could have easily been a 30-27 fight for Franklin. Wandy didn’t push much at all until he had Franklin rocked for a minute in the second, and as a desperation attempt near the end of the third. Other than that, Franklin worked him.
