MMA Quick Quote: Scott Smith pulls a rabbit out of his butt against Benji Radach

"There was about honestly three times when I thought the fight was over. I was out when I pulled his leg. I was rocked. I saw him about three different times. I didn't know what I was doing ... I just pulled it out of my butt. My kids are here and I could not let them down.... He absolutely picked me a part as you can see in the first two rounds, but I'm always dangerous.... I just said [to myself] that I owe it to the fans and everyone out there to lay it absolutely on the line and I did. I was fortunate enough tonight to land the "Hands of Steel" right across his face.... I got hurt in this fight -- I got hurt really bad. I had some coaches who helped me pull through ... I've got to thank my masseuse, Tom Atencio, thank you very much."

-- Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith talks about his thrilling come-from-behind knockout win over Benji Radach at Strikeforce: "Shamrock vs. Diaz." Smith was getting schooled for three rounds before out of nowhere he dropped another magical right hand right on the button of the "Razor" to put him down for the count. After the awesome performance, he thanked several people for helping him prepare for the middleweight brawl, including his masseuse, Tom Atencio. Weird.

scott smith plays possom alot. he gets hit and he acts like he’s rocked and then tries to pull a Pete Sell type KO.. isn’t their a rule about that

by mikeybear on Apr 12, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why should there be a rule to stop people from playing possum? As long as he isn’t backing up the whole fight I don’t think there should be any rules against feigning being hurt to lure your opponent closer to you. Besides I think your just mistaken, Scott Smith doesn’t play possum… he just gets hurt a lot and pulls off crazy one punch finishers.

agrred, however the fact that Radach could not pull off a finish kinda made it look almost amateurish at times.

i think smiths chin is weak it’s his iron will that keeps him going, dude gets rocked by punches that barely land, but damn he hits like a mack truck

love watching smith fight, but damn, his head movement is atrocious. How has he not developed any defense?? He’s been around for awhile and I don’t think he has ever avoided a punch.

Seriously, I fucking love this guy. So much heart and determination. GO SCOTT GO!

What is it with people thanking tom atencio for weird stuff? I remember after one fight didn’t someone mention that tom got married to another guy? now it’s mentioned that he is scott’s masseuse?

there is some running inside joke about how tom atencio is gay that the fighters have and I’m not sure exactly what it is or how it started. Can anyone enlighten me?

by joseph.67 on Apr 12, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

same dude made that other comment. I don’t know the intention behind the joke but one could speculate it might be to get on Dana’s good side unless “t-shirt guy” wronged him in some way

by quidnunc on Apr 13, 2009 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think that is it. I think it is an inside joke between the two. Affliction is his sponsor. He was wearing Affliction trunks and had Affliction on his banner.

yeah what was up with that tom attencio comment? that was just really creepy and weird.

Maybe Scott Smith is secretly his " life partner "

Really good fight! But, I’d rather lose the match than have a rabbit up my butt! lol

The Grim – Abongo fight was pretty entertaining as well, but this fight was amazing. Enjoy.

Does anyone else realize that a masseuse is a female massage therapist and a masseur is a male massage therapist?

He basically called Tom Attencio a female massage therapist and I don’t think he meant to. Surely someone out there other than me is intelligent enough to catch that.

by sdow on Apr 12, 2009 1:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Either way is fine, so long as it comes with a happy ending.

agreed

I don’t think that most people make that differentiation when they speak.

Scott Smith has the heart of a lion! Many other guys if put in the same position he was in would have their eyes role in the back of their head, or just plain give up. I had never really been a big fan of his, nor did I dislike him before this fight, but I am a fan now! Great fight by both fighters!
WAR HANDS OF STEEL!!!

Maybe Tom can cure Cyborgs “girl problems”.

by Dennis on Apr 12, 2009 2:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no, he only handles guy problems.

So much for Benji beating Anderson huh Bas. That made me laugh the first time I heard it when I was watching Inside MMA. He doesn’t have good finishing ability and it showed again. Benji does hit crazy hard, but I was suprised that it took him as long as it did to finish Ninja in their fight. One of the most entertaining fights that I have seen in a while. That Scott Smith is tough as hell. He is the one who commented on Tom Attencio getting married to a dude also. I can’t see him being a dick since he is sponsored by Affliction.

Oh well, I thought those shirts were gay anyway.

I met Scott in Nashville. He was one of the nicest fighters I’ve ever met. Also, had the opportunity to meet Randy Couture. I used to be a fan til I met him.. TOTAL Prick.

by ablack on Apr 13, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Scott Smith cheated..he was about to get choked out and grabbed the fence to break the hold…he looked like he was about to go out…

WHY IS THIS NOT GETTING TALKED ABOUT!
