The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9: Episode 2 recap and discussion

Episode two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 9 gets underway and we start things off in Las Vegas with the 16 hopeful Americans arriving to find out who they must fight in order to secure one of the eight remaining spots in the TUF house.
Two minutes into Dana's monologue and Jason Pierce pulls a Phillipe Nover and goes down in a heap, presumably from cutting weight.
He doesn't get much of the spotlight however as John-David Shackleford sports a helping of herpes on his forehead and gets the boot.
Then there is Christian Felgium, this season's Jason Guida. Felgium shows up overweight and has to spend some time on the outdoor bike in a rubber suit. When he clocks in still two pounds over, they drop him on the treadmill and he instantly collapses.
Not a good look for the boys back home.
Dana starts dropping the F-bomb because it's season nine and the guys still can't seem to get it together. He even goes so far as to call it the worst start to any season in TUF history -- and of course it's the Americans who hold that dubious honor.
Dana warns the group that Team Britain is on point and I suddenly feel the urge to go back and edit my opinion on Team UK in last week's recap.
Fatso and Herpes go home, which leaves two vacancies for Team USA. Dana makes some calls as the elimination fights get under way.
Elimination bout #1: Mark Miller (10-4) vs. Kevin Knabjian (10-3-1)
Round 1: Miller and Knabjian are training partners and not too psyched up about going at it. They touch gloves and start throwing some leather. Straight kick lands for Miller. They take turns throwing combos. Miller sounds like a water balloon popping with every thrust. Failed takedown for Knabjian. Miller unloads and Knabjian covers up. Miller the busier of the two but not doing much damage. Spinning back fist from Knabjian gets nothing. Knabjian getting marked up, not really putting forth much offense. Round over.
Round 2: Knabjian finally opens up and connects, dropping Miller. He follows him to the mat and tries for the heel hook but Miller escapes. Back to their feet and Miller unloads, backing Knabjian up. An uppercut stuns Knabjian who buckles and then gets absolutely destroyed by a flurry of hard punches causing a referee stoppage to end it.
Mark Miller defeats Kevin Knabjian via TKO
Elimination bout #2: Richie Whitson (4-0) vs. Paul Bird (4-1)
Round 1: Henderson tells Dana that Whitson is a newbie at Hendo's gym. Bird rushes in and takes Whitson down. Whitson stands up and Bird jumps on his back and sinks in a rear naked nothing. They separate and Whitson backs him up with kicks and punches. Bird shoots and gets stuffed, stands up and eats a few. Whitson drags him down and gets mount. Bird goes fetal and takes punishment. He nearly pulls off the armbar but Whitson escapes and takes his back. Bird gets flattened out and choked into a stoppage.
Richie Whitson defeats Paul Bird via submission (rear naked choke)
Elimination bout #3: Waylon Lowe (5-2) vs. Santino DeFranco (13-4)
Round 1: We learn that DeFranco made the cut for TUF 2 but had to leave with a brain aneurysm. One surgery and seven seasons later and he's back for another run. Definitely the sentimental favorite. Lowe charges and takes him down. From guard, DeFranco able to stymie most of his offense. Lowe finally wiggles out and drops punch after punch on DeFranco -- who covers up but makes absolutely no effort to improve position or fight back. Mazzagatti warns him for inactivity but DeFranco seems content just laying there and getting hammered like a whack-a-mole stuck in the upright position. This goes on until the round ends. Dana predicts DeFranco -- who is slow to rise -- won't answer the bell for round two.
Round 2: DeFranco answers the bell but looks broken. He goes in with a desperation flying knee and it lands square on Lowe's face. He then grabs Lowe and trips him to the mat. They hit the ground and DeFranco takes his back and sinks in the rear naked choke. Everyone on the show (and at home) is staring at what just transpired, mouth agape.
Santino DeFranco defeats Waylon Lowe via submission (rear naked choke)
Elimination bout #4: Steve Berger (19-19-2) vs. Jason Pierce (9-0)
Rounds 1-3: A fast-forward special. Dana narrates. Round one and Berger gets dropped and survives submission attempts. Round two and Berger does nothing from mount. Round three is a bore.
Jason Pierce defeats Steve Berger via unanimous decision
Elimination bout #5: Cameron Dollar (4-1) vs. Tom Hayden (4-0)
Rounds 1-2: A Dana fast-forward special, part deux. Hayden takes him down and pounds away for the entire round. Round two is more of the same until Dollar escapes and chokes him out.
Cameron Dollar defeats Tom Hayden via submission (rear naked choke)
Elimination bout #6: DaMarques Johnson (13-6) vs. Ray Elbe (20-11)
Round 1: Johnson is bouncing around the cage while Elbe is stiffer than Old Chief Woodenhead. Spinning backfist for Elbe does not land. Elbe shoots and ends up getting mounted. Johnson lands a few elbows. Elbe doing nothing but laying on his back and taking a vicious beating. This goes on for about a minute or so until the referee intervenes. I'm sure he's glad he flew all the way from Thailand for that.
DaMarques Johnson defeats Ray Elbe via TKO
Coach Henderson feels confident that he has a solid team after the elimination fights, despite only having six members. To fill the gap, Dana went fishing for replacements and found Frank Lester and Rob Browning -- yes, little brother of Junie Browning.
Here's hoping Lil' Browning can break the brother curse. We all know how well Lance Evans did -- and we won't even get into the debacle that was Jason Guida. Good luck, Rob.
Stay tuned next week as the final two spots are decided for Team USA and the tomfoolery begins when Team UK shacks up in the same house as Team USA.
See you in seven!

Thought it sucked to put the two training partners against one another. Forget the touchy feeling reasons; you don’t know if your seeing the guys at their best or if they’re holding back.

I believe Kevin Knabjian was holding back! You could see it on his face.

that’s not what i saw, i saw him eating serious jabs, his face was starting to look pretty red and swollen early on. He listened to his corner and threw a right hand and dropped the kid but couldn’t finish. Went for the sub too fast instead of keeping up the GNP. Maybe in that sense he wanted to sub his friend instead of busting him up…. Friendship is one thing but this is an individual sport and winning that fight could have dramatically changed his life. Just being on the show practically guarantees you will be on a UFC card. He did himself a disservice if he was holding back.

You may hold back for a punch or two, but when your buddy hits you hard and you say to yourself, “Man, I can’t believe he’s hitting me like that,” you change gears and friend or not, you want to smash him in the face.
Kevin knew he was in for one hell of a ride.

I figured Shaun White and the guy with the mohawk would make it on the show, as with the guy who isn’t fighting Browning; they are all on the commercials, and I doubt the UFC would market a guy who doesn’t even make it into the house.
I’d also like to think that they didn’t waste their commercials on guys that are going to suck on the show either, so look for Mohawk and Shaun White to do at least halfway decent.
And did anyone else pick up Rob Browning in the preview for next week? It looked to me that he was the guy that smashed whatever in other guys chest. Kinda gives it away, Jason Dent loses, or theres a freak incident and Dana wants more ratings with another Browning.
If Dent loses, then damn. The guy fought and lost in the UFC to Huerta and Tibau, and although getting beat every round in those fights, he stayed in there and didn’t make it easy for them. I figured he was a lock to get on the show.
This is all speculation, of course, so I hope I’m wrong.

Hey John, off topic, but I was thinking about this last night. One guy who has been completely left out of the LHW title hunt is Rich Franklin. I know he has a few fights whose results are not impacting the LHW division, and he has that loss to Hendo, but why isn’t he in the mix here?
To me, if Rich Franklin gets by Wanderlei Silva (which I think he will), I think he should fight the winner of Shogun/Chuck. I’m pulling for Chuck here, so I would be predicting a Liddell/Franklin match-up. I think that would be a DYNAMITE fight. It is also very likely. Hendo was Rich’s only loss at 205 (unless the Machida fight was 205). But if you include that, hes still X-1 at that weight, so Rich is a big threat for the LHW belt.
Why wouldn’t this be a big fight, in terms of popularity to the casual and hardcore fans, as well as a big money match for the UFC, where they can sell a “2 former dominant champs”

Syn: I dont disagree at all! I do forget to mention Franklin when talking about the top dogs at 205…but I dont do it on Purpose.
I think after wanderlei…THe only logical choice for Franklins next opponents would be: Shogun, LIddell, Forrest, tHiago Silva….If he performs well against Wanderlei.
If Wanderlei steamrolls him, then Franklin will have to fight someone like: Banha Cane, Vera, Jardine!

wait so Junie’s brother didn’t fight last night?
by john on Apr 9, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
DJ, I disagree from personal experience. When I fought, I trained with my best friend. We could pop the shit out of one another and even focus on correct form, but we could never muster the same “I want to break your face” attitude and deliver the way we could with outside opponents. Friends fighting shoudl be avoiding when possible for performance sake. Lots of people who say “you have to get over it. It’s your job”. Well, what if they don’t? Who gets robbed? The fans IMO.

I don’t know who the olympic skier is, but I thought the red headed guy looked like he could have been Conan O’Brien’s brother.

One of two things….the Browning egg incident could be to entice us to tune in next week. Its possible they all were allowed in the house and Dent/Browning fight the next day. I cant see this being a mistake, unless UFC doesnt care that they are spoiling the remaining two matches, which i find hard to believe.

Dan Henderson is going to make for an extremely boring coach.
by subwayy2sallyy on Apr 8, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would have to disagree with Mr. Subway..Dan is a mild mannered guy, that is very witty and funny. He’s not Matt Serra where he’ll talk a million words a minute, but when he talks….it counts.
WAR HENDERSON

I’m not saying you have to be clowning like Rampage or something, but he might as well have not even be on this episode because he didn’t comment on anything or anybody except to say, " Hey that guy trains at my gym."

You know, I agree with you. Hendo is a man of few words and when he does speak, it doesn’t flow. Everything seems laboured and difficult. Maybe its the cameras following him around… he’s probably not used to that. He appears to be the type of guy that is more comfortable in a one on one environment, not the classroom setting he will have with a bunch of students.

I hate to say it but the U.S. didnt come out as strong and hungry as the UK, for the most part, not all but a few fighters. The UK all fighters came strong and ready and had already cut to the proper weight.

wtf..junies brother? thats fuct i think he was beefing next week….and the guy who said hendo will be a boring coach is dumb, hendo is hilarious

The U.S. should be able to take the cavity capitol of the world any day. Dont be surprised if you see team UK spitting teeth before during and after the fight.

I can’t believe they didnt stop that one fight where DeFranco was getting pounded for like 2-3 minutes straight laying on his side.

SERIOUSLY. WTF is up with that. I thought that guy would have a concussion for sure.

Yea, I watched to whole episode, ALL 15 minutes of it between the 45 minutes of advertisements. That really pissed me off. They could have squeezed those two remaining fights in easy.

Amazing, another Browning who looks like he’s going to be a complete asspie.

why junies brother..why not stick to the fighters that were there…like the first fight..pick kevin to come back..or the guy back from thailand, he had some interesting strikes…but noooo they got to get a dick head instead..i think most of the fights were good…too bad the yanks had to show up with contagious sores..over weight..and underprepared (fainting) quiting makes me so mad!! i am excited to see the fights unfold..but i can tell already..it might turn into the check the last 15 mins to watch the fight kinda show..i don’t care..yank or uk..i just wanna see good fights..may the best man win..

oh my god your usa team sucks balls ha ha ha overweight and herps season 9 winner will be one from the u.k war BISPING
by mikemmafan on Apr 9, 2009 12:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If a Brit wins, it will have nothing to do with Bisping.
It is funny though, that the Americans were overweight…why did I predict that? Hope it’s a good season though.
