Junior dos Santos likely to return at UFC 102 against Justin McCully on Aug. 29

Heavy-handed Brazilian knockout artist Junior dos Santos (8-1) will look to keep his perfect record inside the Octagon intact when he collides with mixed martial arts journeyman Justin McCully (9-4-2) at UFC 102 from the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., on August 29, according to Tatame.com.
"Cigano" recently felled the Dutch "Skyscraper," also known as Stefan Struve via technical knockout (strikes), at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" earlier this year on Feb. 21. It was a nice encore performance after he burst on the scene with an 81-second knockout of Fabricio Werdum — widely considered a top player in the division — in his debut for the promotion at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" back in October 2008.
The Team Nogueira-trained fighter has never been beyond the first round in his professional career, finishing his all of his opponents (with the exception of one) with a mix of submissions and (technical) knockouts.
He has looked powerful and crisp in all of his UFC performances. It will be interesting to see of he can keep pace in the division alongside other up-and-comers such as Shane Carwin, Cain Velasquez and others with another win against the tricky "Team Punishment" Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist.
McCully was supposed to take on highly touted British heavyweight Neil Grove at UFC 95. However, "The Insane One" was replaced on short notice with Mike Ciesnolevicz after he sustained a cut while training for the heavyweight tilt.
He is known for wearing on his opponents with a strong wrestling base and then usually tries to end fights with his solid submission game. And it has been effective as of late. In fact, McCully has won four of his last five fights, including two of three in the Octagon since returning to action from a three-year hiatus in 2006.
He defeated talented striker Antoni Hardonk at Ultimate Fight Night 9 by unanimous decision in April of 2007, then lost to Gabriel Gonzaga by first round submission at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" over a year later. "The Insane One" most recently grinded out another unanimous decision victory over Eddie Sanchez at "Fight For The Troops" in December.
UFC 102 is expected to feature one of the sport’s biggest stars — and local-area product — former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture, locking horns with former Pride FC and UFC interim heavyweight champion, Antonio Rodrigo ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira.

seems like dos santos is going backwards… he knocks out a top ten HW in werdum, then fights an octagon newcomer, now mccully? what in the world?

i think they want to test him against a wrestler… to see if he is ready for the a-level competition
i like dos santos and think he is the real deal…. i dont think there is any rush for him to be fighting a-level because he is only young but if he wins this fight convincingly then he probably will
i read a comment on here a bit ago and someone was comparing him to houston alexander! the difference is he thought a Bjj expert on in his debut … houston didnt he thought jardine

I would have to strongly agree with UFCaddict! Before moving him up in competition, they need to test him out against a wrestler because he has only been matched up against Strikers thus far, and there are some animal wrestlers awaiting for him at heavyweight as soon as he takes the step up in competition.
No point in matching Cigano up against guys like: Carwin or Cain, if we dont know that he can survive a c-class wrestler like McCully 1st!
I would have loved to see Cigano fight in philly….but whatever…Cards stacked, cant win em all!

All there doing is trying to build Cigano up now that they know he has serious talent. He was brought into the UFC for Werderm to kill to put him in line for the next title shot.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about when Goran Reljic is coming back? I was hearing UFC 100 or 101, but it doesn’t look like it’s happening! I’ll be attending UFC 101 in Philadelphia so it would be great if he returned there, but it doesn’t look likely. Has anyone heard anything?

Weird fight but got to go with Santos with this. With the Ultimate fighter 10 coming up, who do you think the coaches are going to be. They are HW’s so are they waiting for the Mir/Lesnar result. I personaly see a potential Lesnar/Carwin even though I am picking Mir to win. And also with Silva rumored to defending his belt against Maia at 102 he’s out of the equation. I personally think it would be awesome to see GSP/Silva. Thoughts?

Dos Santos is going to be a terror in the Heavyweight division.

WOW. He supposedly has a BJJ Black Belt but subbed by Gonzaga and a lay and pray decision way back when. He seems be an OK guy but he just isn’t exciting. For his sake he better look damn good or he’s gone.

This fight doesn’t make much sense to me. Dos Santos is a rising star and Mccully I think is on is way down. Dos Santos should win this and it will not prove anything that he hasn’t already proved. They should give him Kongo or Herring who are at least mid level fighters.
