He doesnt know anything about the ground game cause he liked knees on the ground? ok …..
by Dayzah on Apr 5, 2009 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions
I respectfully disagree Caesar, and I’m a jits purist! I think the knees on the ground keep the bottom guy more active (because who wants to take a knee to the head) and opens the top positioned guy up for more submissions due to not laying looking to elbow! just my opinion!
by kevin on Apr 5, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
No it just makes the ground game more technical if you ask me. If Aoki hadn’t let himself get into that position he wouln’t have recieved those knee strike. Therefore like neihrick said it makes the ground work much more interesting because the fighters can’t be as careless.

Knees on the ground are the best part of Japanese mma! ITs ridiculous that they arent allowed in America, but we allow silly elbow’s that account for the majority of cut stoppages in American mma!
Not allowing Knees on the ground is such CRAP!!!! Rampage’s ground game was probably one of the best in the world back in pride when he was allowed to use knees to the head! That was a major part of Rampage’s arsenal….which makes his transition into the UFC that much more impressive. THe UFC took away one of his MAIN WEAPONS and he is still a force in the best division in the world….If Page was still allowed to use Knees on the ground….I HONESTLY DONT THINK THERE IS A LHW in the UFC that could beat him!

oK guys…let me give you a quick dose of Sunday morning mma news:
-Diego Sanchez was told by the UFC that with an impressive win against Clay Guida, Diego would become next in line for a lightweight title fight against the winner of florian/Penn
-In a very smart career move: Ricardo Almeida has announced to fans and the UFC that he will be cutting down to welterweight from now on!
-brock, not sure if Frank really got hurt, or is just plain scared! I love BROCK…he calls out Mir to be the biatch that he is!
by john on Apr 5, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Brock can still talk about someone who beat him? Whenever someone talked shit about me (years ago) the point of kicking their ass was to shut them up! Mir had to have his knee scoped, and it put Brock into the main event at UFC 100…he should be thanking Mir just for the extra money he’ll make on ppv buys alone! What a douche. Mir by 1st round submission AGAIN!!!
by kevin on Apr 5, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
The Sanchez news was obvious, but Guida sucks so it shouldn’t be a problem! I think the sanchez/Penn match will go deep and may be fight of the year! John, I need your address in the next few weeks, I’m expecting 101 tickets will be going on sale in may, I’ll mail you 500 and you can give me change when I get into Philly! Pick out a nice restaurant cause I’ll owe you dinner!
by kevin on Apr 5, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Brock wasn’t talking trash. He was respectful the whole time he was on Inside MMA, he said one thing and people blow it out of proportion. Drama kings over here.
by Killer on Apr 5, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions
cmon man, I don’t care how “respectful” someone says something, he’s obviously discrediting his injury. It would be like me saying John, I respectfully think you’re a fag!
by kevin on Apr 5, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Knees on the ground are fun to watch, but the kind of power one can generate and the king of accuracy someone has on the ground make them very dangerous. They are also very difficult to defend. I agree that it adds a new demention to the ground game that people have to adapt to, but the chance for injury is great. But if the fighters say it’s okay than I’m all for it. However I’m not a proponet of leagalizing knees to the head of a downed opponent in America. I like my American MMA and my Japanese MMA just fine.

John I would like to think if knee strikes were allowed in the UFC we would have a whole new set of amazing fights. We’d see the Wandy of old come out and whoop some people bad. We would probably even see the first death in MMA by the lethals knees of the spider. If I remember right thats how he ended Okami’s night. But anyway I completely agree Kevin that Lesnar should be thanking Frank for getting them on the headline of ufc 100. I also think Frank should be thanking Lesnar for causing this stir to hype their fight. Since this is a rematch and Lesnar was whooping on Frank before getting swiftly submitted I think this fight is going to have a ton of people watching. I don’t know if Affliction is still planning on headlining a show the same night but if they do they will get killed in their numbers.

hahaha great way to start a sunday morning! i don’t really care for aoki or the whole royce gracie style of fighting. 1 dimensional fihting can only take you so far.
by sac165 on Apr 5, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, only so far as to be a legend in the sport – to an iconic level not matched by anyone in the sport. Royce Gracie – LEGEND
by kokondo on Apr 5, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Thats not his point, yes royce is a legend but if he was in his prime fighting today he wouldnt be a dominating champion, there are just too many well rounded guys.
by mike22 on Apr 5, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Royce fought in a different time period against much crappier guys. The game has evolved a ton since then. Gracie in his prime wouldn’t even make the ufc roster nowadays

I agree guys, the ground game is so more active with knees on the ground as opposed to elbows! This event was great. I went to bed at 10, woke up at midnight and watched until the end! I was so excited to see Aioki and his jits, he gets an instant takedown and BOOM, it’s over! Only in mma!!
by kevin on Apr 5, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions
quick question, how many of you watched mmahacks, the link I posted? when I started watching it, there was no one on there, by the end it was packed, he kicked everyone (2000+)
out and had to log back in. I might not be able to share all my links anymore!

Mach was such a lock it wasnt even funny! I made some nice money betting on him. Kevin: I havent watched the event yet….I have actually been missing the last 4 or 5 mma events….its my last semester at school and I have been out partying like a madman all day n night, and I have been missing many events lIVE. last mma event I actually watched LIVE was UFC 95…seems like ages ago!
I love aoki, but he had NO BUSINESS fighting Mach! My favorite part of Mach’s game is how damn mean he is! I hear that he is a mean ol’ Bastard and I love that about him! I knew that Aoki had NMO SHOT at beating Sakurai! What a Lock that was!
Kevin: since I missed this event, what matches would you suggest that I watch? Were the rumors about Sergei bulking up to 265 lbs true?
by john on Apr 5, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah, quite honestly John, the whole event was good! I took a jab at your Rua boys the other day saying Ninja needed all the help he could get (fighting in Japan, nudge, and fighting someone on 2 days notice)…didn’t help him out though. The rua boys are probably the most disappointing family in mma right now!
We have (by my count) 6 mma events/shows in a weeks yime! My wife is mma’d out, yet she woke up at 3 and stayed up to the end watching with me on the sofa (man I love my “big screen” computer monitor)!

Once it hit the ground, it was all him. In the standup he was a little stiff but confident- got a couple of shots in. Definite big future like we all thought.

It’s too bad that when Mach was rumored to be heading to the UFC it never materialized. Another good performance by Sakurai. Found myself awake all night and finally watched Dream live. Does anyone else on here think about studying Japanese just for fight watching purposes? Now, if I could only get the chick near the end of the video to tutor me.

Do you guys realize what a busy month this is? we got wec, strikeforce, TUF episode with all fights and UFC97, not to mention Dream and Bellator all in a week. Mania must be racking up the frequent flier miles. You didn’t go to Japan Mania…did you?
by kevin on Apr 5, 2009 10:52 AM EDT reply actions
Adding any new techniques to mma. ie. knees on the ground, or stomps, or elbows in japan is only going to make the game more evolved and give the competitors more tools to finish a fight. I wish they would expand the techniques and unify the rules. p.s. I cant believe the poll on other websites ppl voted on had 85% Aoki would win this fight. hahahahahahaha. Anybody could win, but to count Mach out like that esp. when he already beat Aoki. Some ppl really get into the hype huh??
by BloodDrunk on Apr 5, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions
Great fight from a great event, I didn’t think Mach would end it so quickly. I had money saying he was going to win, but not that quickly. Aoki should stick to lightweight maybe.

Glad to see someone rough up Aoki. He has slick subs and thats it.

beautiful ko, i liked johns post about rampage and his knees, its so true ! but tonight we get to see torres kill some new guy to the wec and curran kick benadidez(bad spelling) ass
by Jared on Apr 5, 2009 12:47 PM EDT reply actions
Heh, sorry, Curran is going dowwwwwn. Benavidez is the future.
by CJN on Apr 5, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe but curran is always game… i wouldnt be surprised if he pulled out a win… But i wouldnt be surprise if he gets dominated as well.. that make sense?
by mike22 on Apr 5, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Im really looking forward to the Curran and Benavidez match up, i think it will be very exciting. Benavidez will it with and KO, and Torres well I dont see anyway he lose’s this match up. But its mma and we all know what can happen

Yep, those knees were brutal. I don’t understand Caesar’s comment about “not knowing the ground game” WTF? Maybe Caesar doesn’t train for knees and he’s intimidated…they are kind of an equalizer…In Japan it IS part of the ground game.
IMO you should at least be aware of the possibility of knees like that ,because the way you train is the way you fight. If you get in a scrap on main street, end up on the bottom looking for some slick sub, you could get blasted.
by Teep on Apr 5, 2009 2:11 PM EDT reply actions
Funny thing is , I dont think Caesar understood his own comment , I think he thought he was being witty when actually it was quite the opposite.

ive always liked sakurai, wish he would go to the ufc. would be sweet. who has seen the fight with him and matt hughes? i wanna see it. hes better now though and matt hughes is worse.
by DaiTheFlu on Apr 5, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions
it’s really nice to see aoki get knocked out. he should learn to fight like a man and maybe he wouldn’t end up looking so weak.
by jj on Apr 5, 2009 5:36 PM EDT reply actions
I can’t believe there were people who thought Aoki would get the better of BJ Penn and ranked him higher as a LW. I like Aoki, his submissions, not to forget his tight-pants, are cool, but he has nothing that would beat BJ.
by Johnny Farnham on Apr 6, 2009 5:24 AM EDT reply actions
I gotta say though, since this debacle with Penn lately, I feel like it’s the beginning of the end for him. I hope not.
by Johnny Farnham on Apr 6, 2009 5:31 AM EDT up reply actions
The way those japanese commentators go with the yelling is awesome plus the Back To The Future music. Close my eyes and the fight is just as entertaining.
