UFC 97: Chuck Liddell wants to 'knock off' Shogun's head and get back in the title hunt

Props: Mirror.co.uk

Quoteworthy:

"I am looking to get back to competing for the title. I want to get back to the top and put some of my past fights behind me and get my revenge.... I am in great shape. I have been waiting to fight Rua for a long time. He was one of the best in Pride and seen as one of the top guys until he lost to Forrest so this is going to be a great fight.... I am going to go after him. I am going to pressure him and make him prove that he is in shape. But basically I am going to try to knock his head off."

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell still has his sights set on reclaiming the 205-pound title even at age 39. "Iceman" has dropped three of his last four fights, but that's not stopping him from making one last run at championship glory, which will go through Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97: "Redemption" on April 18 in Montreal, Quebec. Not an easy task ... although Liddell is certainly not short on confidence.

Shogun has not lived up to the hype since arriving in the UFC. His win over Coleman was borderline embarassing… I am gonna give Chuck the benefit of the doubt here and say he does land an overhand right sending Rua to the canvas. KO RD 2.

Chuck should be trying to knock some sit ups off!

Shogun via submission! No doubt about it!

by john on Apr 3, 2009 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, you are certainly a true believer in Shogun. Of course you were also a true believer in B.J., and he was almost killed. The same thing happens here. I say Chuck wins a very one sided fight. Shogun looked terrible in his last fight, and 3 months is not enough time to make a complete change on a bum knee. On top of that, Chuck is not Coleman, and will make Shogun pay if he is not in top form.

It’s always nice to see someone get called out for missed predictions, LOL. John, what do you have to say for yourself??

I’m taking a declining Iceman for the TKO. The only thing Shogun’s been good at lately is makin excuses. He said he was in great condition before the Coleman fight, then said after the fight he said he was still recovering from surgery.

Chuck’s got some of the best take-down defence in the UFC. Good luck Shogun. BTW, anyone interested in a pair of floor seats ($1200).

by Stryker on Apr 3, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who cares who misses their predictions…that’s what this forum is all about.

I have to say that I was going with Chuck when I first heard about this but john has gotten me to sway my decision. I think Chuck is still a very dangerous fighter and I’m looking forward to seeing if training at ATT has changed his game up at all. Chuck’s hand speed is not what it was and he isn’t exactly knocking too many people out these days…he hasn’t done it in a while. Chuck has had the same game plan for every fight for the last few years and it’s time for him to change it up cause it isn’t fooling anyone anymore.

I think Shogun training with Maia is going to make a huge difference in this fight. I think we’re going to see a very crafty Shogun…he’s not going to be overly aggressive in this fight. He’s going to be very tactical and he’s going to wait for Chuck to make a mistake and then he’s going to take him down and beat on him until a limb comes loose and then we’re going to see Chuck tap…what a sight that will be.

by Buster Bluth on Apr 3, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like the IceMan to win this fight. I think he will catch a WINDED Shogun with a picture perfect counter punch in the 3rd round and will KO Shogun. That is my prediction.

For any intersted parties, I just put in my first bet for the next UFC event = parlay = Silva/Liddell/Kongo paying out at +143 or so. (that is on BetUs)

Also, BoDog has listed the odds for the DREAM event!!!! I posted them in the DREAM thread, and it also looks like BoDog is working on getting the Bellator odds up as well. The only problem with betting on DREAM is that I will now if I won my bets or not before I watch the event. I believe HDnet is not airing it until next Friday. But I will be betting on the college games thru Monday and will see my balance and know if I won or lost my bets, which would inditcate who won/lost the fights…

Cannibal is right. He put him to sleep with an arm triangle in their first fight, but Chuck did not tap, so technically he did not submit. In the second fight Chuck beat Horn like a red headed step child.

by naturalshadow on Apr 4, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Buster Bluth you say John has gotten you to sway your descision, I’m wondering whether or not you are just John using another name trying to convince others that Shogun has a chance. If you are not, then I really cannot see from watching the last two Shogun fights what you think Chuck has to worry about. I picked him to lose against Jardine and Rashad. Jardines gameplan was solid but Rampage and Rashad both just connected first with their punches sh@t happens, GSP knows about that. Those knockout losses by getting beaten to the punch, cannot compare to the abysmal performaces that Shogun displayed, they were simply embarrasing to watch. Do you really envision Shogun who gasses after the first round taking Chuck down when so many wrestlers who are in peak condition are unable to. You only need to imagine what would have happned if it was Chuck facing Coleman instead of Shogun, to give you an indication of what is going to happen when they meet.

by Robert(1) on Apr 3, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by all accounts since chuck has married all he’s been doing is going to the gym and straight home, this coming from wandy himself! i think chuck will be pumped for this fight like the wandy one, which was a prime example of what chuck can do, changing up his fight plan, more kicks, spinng back fists, takedowns, hopefully we’ll get to see this from him!! i dont see a sub in this fight, even if chuck was trapped he still wouldnt tap, although how good would it be to see chuck get a sub of his own, liddell pulling off a triangle!!

I was really excited to see Shogun in the UFC he was one of my favorite Pride fighters!!Then when he lost to Forest not to mention that TERIBLE peformance against Coleman,Shogun really needs to step it up IMO if he doesnt stop Chuck I think he needs to beat it.

I am rooting for Shogun.

Chuck has knock out power in both hands and feet, so no matter what age or losing streak he is on, if you slip up he’ll put you to sleep. If Shogun comes with cardio, this fight should be no problem

lol, chuck is getting knocked out again.

by roy on Apr 3, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that was true in the past but Chuck has lost that knock out power…. Wandy was ko’d brutally by Hendo and Jackson but Chuck couldn’t get him out….4 years ago Chuck would have finished Jardine in the 1 st round…Rashad said he got hit harder in practice, wow when was the last time you heard someone say that about Chuck? …he hasn’t scored a knock out in 4 fights…Shogun will hurt Chuck bad in this fight, real bad. I like both fighters so I can’t lose but i fear for Chuck in this one. It seems every fight now we have to hear Chuck has that fire back…sadly it’s gone and can’t come back. Again, I’m a fan of both fighters but Chuck has been in danger of getting hurt lately… where Shogun just looks sloppy, big difference.

by Robert(1) on Apr 3, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

your logic is flawed. you can take the same wandy / chuck fight and wandy couldn’t put chuck out, but he was able to give jardine a nasty KO. so based on your logic wandy shouldn’t have been able to take jardine out since he couldn’t put chuck down like others have at this point in his career.

by newkoba on Apr 3, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll take it but Chuck of old killed fighters now he doesn’t

by Robert(1) on Apr 3, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im against you on this one Robert(1). Rashad said that because he is trying to sound like hes cool or something. Hes always talking crap. We will see what he has to say after the Machida fight.

BTW Im totally biased because I just cant stand Rashad.

by enzo-enormous on Apr 3, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

whether or not he meant it or not Chuck never hurt him in the fight…anybody else and it’s not a big deal but Chuck is a knockout fighter who can’t knockout fighters anymore…

by Robert(1) on Apr 3, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Robert is right…..to an extent, but lets remember, Chuck only hit Rashad what seemed like one good time and even then he hit Rashad while Rashad was back peddling at a high speed so its hard to tell from only one hit that may not have even connected well on Rashad…of course Rashad is gonna say he didn’t hit har.

But, remember that Jardine said Chuck hits hard and that he was dazed with every punch even if he blocked it…he nearly KO’d Wanderlei and Wandy couldn’t put him to sleep but he laid Jardine out….I guess we will just have to see the outcome of this fight….

by Chadx23 on Apr 3, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Power is the last thing to go. The top athletes in most pure power sports are actually in their mid to late 30’s, and sometimes older. Chuck may have lost some speed, and his chin may not be the piece of granite it once was, but he can still knock anyone out.

by naturalshadow on Apr 3, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

NS, Power and punching power are two different things! first off he’s too slow to be able to score a knockout on a top level guy these days.. Second of all speed and explosiveness also translates into knockouts..

by RoB on Apr 3, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is not too slow to throw a knockout punch. Watch tapes of George Foreman. His hands were not incredibly fast at all, but there was certainly a ton of power behind them. Even when he was well past his prime. Even when it comes to a punch, power is always the last to go.

by naturalshadow on Apr 4, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

getrawbc,no matter if Liddell has KO power his style is so noticable that he is easier to read then a graphic novel that being said Rua needs to capatalize on Chuck’s open stance and constant circling he needs to work the kick’s and close the distance, maybe even go for the clinch then the sweep once Liddell is on his back he is not dangerous at all!

by NM on Apr 3, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree i got chuck here, his list of opponents in his career is a who’s who of great fighters, and I feel he will get the tko here. I wana see a rematch between rashad and iceman if he wins, i still think chuck can beat him, just gota keep his hands up

by markg on Apr 3, 2009 7:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Chuck just got frustrated in the Rashad fight. If you remember when he fought Wanderlei, they were both showing each other alot of respect. But the crowd started booing, so they got to it. And thats where you can make a mistake and get caught. So as long as Chuck stays composed and follows his gameplan, he’ll knock Shogun out.

by JV on Apr 3, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea I think chuck has to change his striking style a little bit. He has the KO power obviously but he consistently leaves himself vulnerable. If he worked a little more on head movement and defending whie throwing punches, he would be a much more soid stand up fighter.

by Jared on Apr 3, 2009 7:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You have got to go for Chuck in this fight, I know Rua was one of the best in Pride and has a great following but only a handfull of fighters have been able to make the jump from Pride to UFC. If you foreget about his Pride days and judged him on his UFC performances no onw would be talking about him! Chuck 2nd round KO!

by CjGilly on Apr 3, 2009 8:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chuck says this every fight and has this game plan for every fight and we all know how that has been working out lately. Unless he comes in with some drastically different game plan that will totally throw Shogun off, it should be a walk in the park for Shogun. Shogun disposed of Rampage rather quickly, a guy who made short work of Chuck in under a round.

If Chuck comes into this fight head hunting, it’s going to a decision with Shogun out pointing him. Shogun is smart enough to know Chuck is looking for the headlight reel KO and won’t play into that game.

Shogun via UD or a 2nd round TKO via knees.

by launchian on Apr 3, 2009 8:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Shogun did put away Rampage, many years ago. Today, Rampage is probably drooling to get the chance to kill Rua. That fight would not be close at all.

by naturalshadow on Apr 3, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rampage would rape RUA if they fought when Shogun was fighting COleman back in January

by Chadx23 on Apr 3, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“2nd round TKO via knees”
What? No one can hang on to Liddell long enough to takedown let alone submit him… so how is he going to get KO’d by knees? You make no sense. Liddell’s gonna have the big win by TKO late in the 2nd round when Rua gasses!

As far as Babalu/Feijao, I really like both guys. It’s a hard one to pick, but I think Feijao is a killer and is very hungry. On the feet, I go with Feijao, on the ground Babalu’s wrestling may be the difference. Right now, I say Feijao by TKO.

everyone is saying chuck is over and why?/ Cos hes been caught a couple of times…..get with it, a couple of guys figured out his game plan, he got sloppy as he was demolishing everyone. In a way it will be good for him as it highlights what he has to work on, if he does that then the ko’s follow!!!

I think the main thing chuck has to do, which he said he has, is work on his defence.

Barring any freaks i see chuck ko in the 2nd!

Chuck should do alright against Shogun considering the last two fights the Brazilian has been in have been extremely lackluster. I think training with ATT should improve a lot of not only Chuck’s striking angles but the boxing standpoint of keeping your hands up and not getting caught with with those right crosses anymore!

Chuck is due for laying someone out and the Shogun is on the menu!

by Sofa-King-Toasty on Apr 3, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Can’t wait for this fight. I really do hope Chuck comes out with improved hands (meaning the way he throws punches and the way he holds his hands when he throws and when he’s not throwing). He would def. be alot harder to hit if he would hold those hands up more. I’m not ready to sail him down the river like alot of the guys on here. I’d like to see him make one more good run before he has to hang it up. And I doubt that he has lost very much power in his punches, maybe a little bit of speed. Guys have just had really good game plans and its been awhile since he’s hit someone right on the button. I’m hoping he finds that “button” on Shogun!

by brac on Apr 3, 2009 10:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chuck is a coked out washed up hag. He’s only looking for a paycheck until no one will book him.

by TJ on Apr 3, 2009 11:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

SUBMISSION?? (mentioned further above) haha. Liddell hasn’t been submitted since 1999 (and only once!). Liddell’s takedown defence is legendary and IF is taken down his scramble (to get back up) is second to none. And lets not forget he’s got a very strong background in wrestling. BJJ or not, no one’s going to be submitting Liddell on April 18th!

I admit, I’m a die-hard Liddell fan, so I’m a bit biased. But he’s still got a good chin, is a fantastic striker (regardless of what some of you say, he is known as a ‘knockout artist’), and very tough to take down. Just because he’s coming off a rough streak doesn’t mean he’s got nothing left. I absolutely think he’s got a good chance to get back into title contention despite his age (just look at Couture) and some of you might be eating your words later on.

Besides, Rua is gonna gas then it’s time for Chuck to end his lack-luster career in the UFC. I predict a classic Liddell KO or TKO late in the 2nd round!

Anyone who says shogun will “destroy” or “dominate” or even just win is just a Liddell hater.
Liddell by Tko 1st or 2nd round.

Gotta go with the younger guy. Shogun’s fight against Coleman was poor; but that’s primarily because he couldn’t handle Coleman’s wrestling. Chuck is not likely to try huge numbers of takedowns. Chuck also won’t be submitting Shogun like Forrest did.

Chuck is 39, and no matter how well his training went, he is still going to fight like a 39-year-old, not a 29-year-old. I’m not counting Chuck out; but Shogun has the edge.

Your not an MMA fan are you?
If that’s honestly what you believe, you are not an MMA fan.

waste of a spot? Hah! What do you think of Shogun? Got beat by over rated Forrest and the barely scraped by with a win over a 46 year old dinosoar in Mark “has been” Coleman

If chuck gets reckless again like he did in his fight with rashage he might just be waking up again dazing at the bright lights.

Too bad for shogun he doesn’t possess the right hand that rashad/rampage do, because that’s the only way lidell loses this fight. Shogun outpointing him isn’t gonna happen. Chuck by ko. in a very, very one sided fight. Shogun is gonna get exposed

I am so excited for this fight; I believe Liddell is going to win; I think he is taking this fight seriousely; I think actually this will be a great 3 round match with the possibilty of sho gun getting KO but I see another wanderlai and liddell fight with again possible KO on Liddell not Sho Gun; I think Rashad helped Chuck come down a notch, no more traditional stuck in my ways stuff

Leites is getting killed by anderson; he will be making up for the cote fight

Rashad will be running into a major road block when he fights Machida

so will Rampage

I predict a Liddell vs Machida show down next year

but anything could happen in the octogan and I could be wrong
