UFC 99: Cain Velasquez vs. Heath Herring fight official for Germany on June 13

Some fans had their doubts, but it is indeed on!

Despite rumors and speculation that the match up between undefeated heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez (5-0) and mixed martial arts veteran Heath Herring (28-14) was scratched from UFC 99 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13, the promotion today made the bout official.

And the clash -- the stiffest test to date in the bright young career of Velesquez -- has also received second billing just below the 195-pound main event between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva. The UFC 99 fight card now appears complete, which we will get to shortly.

In the meantime let's once again talk about a great heavyweight showdown.

Velasquez most recently mugged Denis Stojnic at UFC Fight Night 17 for a round and a half en route to a second round technical knockout victory. It marked just the first time that a Velasquez opponent has made it out of the opening frame.

The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) revealed after the fight that he was disappointed with the dominating performance and vowed to come back better than an ever in his next appearance. He'll need to do just that to have success against a crafty vet such as Herring.

Velasquez now holds wins inside the Octagon against Stojnic, Jake O'Brien and Brad Morris.

Star-divide

"The Texas Crazy Horse" has not seen action since a unanimous decision loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" back in August 2008. He sustained a serious eye injury during the fight, which required him to remain on the sidelines for the remainder of the 2009 fight season.

Lesnar, on the other hand, went on to defeat Randy Couture via technical knockout nearly three months later to capture the division crown.

Herring has had mixed results since joining the promotion in early 2007, losing three fights and winning two. He has gone the distance in all five of those fights. Drawing a fighter with a strong wrestling background who keeps the pedal to the metal throughout the fight such as Velasquez is going to be difficult to handle.

However, Herring has been in against the best in the business and is very capable wherever the fight ends up.

I like the step up in competition for Cain , I dont think its as big a step up as Carwin got in Gabe tho.

Cain by UD .. Dont think he has what it takes too put away Herring , hes pretty tough guy too beat.. But I think Cain takes this by points.

If Cain wins , I hope they setup Carwin vs Cain , would be a great fight with alot of hype.

I don’t think they would put two of their newest HW’s against each other at this point. The UFC wants to build up both guys.

herring is gonna spend 15 minutes on his back.

by shamo84 on Mar 31, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Hearing got owned by Brock, then he will get owned by Cain.

by MikeD on Mar 31, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Herring got owned by Brock due to that early punch. Had that not have landed i still think Brock would have won but not quite as dominantly as he did.

I’d like to add that the difference here when comparing Valasquez to Lesnar is size; Herring is going to be the bigger guy here. I don’t think the Brock fight is any indication of how this fight is going to go.

by O damn he got caught on Mar 31, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think its a good fight for both of them, and it should be pretty close cain is good but still young and herring is tough, either could win.

by roy on Mar 31, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed o damn, cain is only like 230 while herring is right around 250, so this fight will be nothing like the lesnar/herring fight, i could see herring pulling out the win here

by brendan on Mar 31, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This will be a good test of Cain’s mettle, I’ll be interested to see how this one plays out. It’s a UD by somebody. I see it pretty even.

by DSmith on Mar 31, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love how the fickle fans just automatically anoint certain young fighters to be the next great thing, and then teard a fighter down after one loss. I remember when people were talking about Chuck vs. HOuston before Chuck started losing. what a joke!

I am a big fan of Cain’s and I see the potential in him as much as all the other fans do, but I am not ready to say that he is going to walk through Herring like many of the people on this site seem to be claiming. Herring is as tough and seasoned as they come. He will hold the size advantage over cain and the few times that Herring was actually in shape, he looked amazing. One thing I know for sure is that Cain wont be able to finish Heath…Only way cain can win this fight is by decision. I like Herring, but I will root for Cain because Herring is basically a finished product and Cain is still getting better and has a chance to be great.

This fight will prove a lot. For me, Herring is a tougher test than Gonzaga. Gonzaga lacks the mental strength and toughness that Herring has, but Gonzaga is more skilled. I would actually give Herring a great shot at beating GOnzaga~

by john on Mar 31, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. Cain is still very raw, but a stud indeed. He is a rather small HW, especially compared to Brock. Herring is extremely tough to finish, but he just hasn’t shown me that he can stop a takedown consistantly. I KNOW that everyone still remember the fight with Jake O’Brien. I strongly believe that Cain can lay n pray his way to victory in this fight if he so chooses. However, I think that Cain truely wants to be an exciting fighter and knows that lay n prayer fighters are not. I really think that he will give Heath opportunities to defeat him on the feet, but once Cain gets rocked, I expect him to fall right back to his wrestling roots. That is, if he can withstand that first “big punch”.

It’s a great test for Cain. I would not count Herring out!

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 31, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could see Herring weathering the early storm and taking this fight into the second or third with his veteran savvy.

Cain’s punching power isn’t going to be enough to rock Herring with one shot… and Heath is tough as hell.

But Cain is technically superior standing up and will overwhelm Heath. Brown Pride (pisses me off just typing that) by TKO in the 2nd. Great test for this promising young fighter.

This victory would propel Cain to a fight with a true top 5’er… and that’s where he’s going to run into trouble. I think bigger, talented guys like Carwin and Lesnar will be too much for him. Kongo or the winner of the Methuselah/Nog fight might be entertaining.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 31, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Herring is the perfect buildup fight for Cain. His lack of takedown defense or any serious arsenal on the ground makes it a perfect safety spot for Cain to run in if he gets in trouble. He might go for scrambles and escapes but nothing that Cain can’t handle. This will be more about testing his standup than anything and with the power he has, i think he will do ok. Still though, herring hits very hard so you never know these things. Herring has become quite the serviceable gatekeeper.

by NameNotRequired on Mar 31, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think herring has a good shot. im pretty sure herring has a better chin than stoljnic, so he wont have to worry about getting ko’d. besides that during cain’s last fight i noticed he lacks in power but makes up for in technique. whis is why ill take cain by unanamous decision

by Jared on Mar 31, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not trying to take anything away from Brock. but Heath did get poked in the eye by the ref, before the fight even started.

by the Levi on Mar 31, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That had no impact at all. It wasn’t deep or debilitating. When you get poked in the eye and it affects you, you reel in discomfort or pain. He was merely annoyed by it because no one likes anyone’s fingers in his face. It’s preposterous to even think that compromised his vision or game.

by Johnny Farnham on Mar 31, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i thik that it did have an effect on the fight. Brock landed that brutal right in the openning seconds of the fight when HH’s vision wasn’t 100%.

by the Levi on Apr 1, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not a chance at all. That’s ridiculous. As I said, if anyone is ever poked in the eye where it causes pain or loss of vision, they don’t just display a look of agitation but immediately reel in discomfort or pain. Judging by your opinion I’d say it’s never happened to you.

by Johnny Farnham on Apr 1, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look closely at his reaction next time. I respect your opinion, but it’s bogus.

Heath “the gate keeper” Herring

by Nick J on Mar 31, 2009 12:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. It’s a great test for Cain. Lets see if he can get by the HW gatekeeper.

by PACO on Mar 31, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Will get owned by Cain!!!!

A true test for Cain.

The UFC needs continued success from Velasquez, Carwin and Dos Santos to stoke fan interest in what should be the marque division in the sport. For the previous couple years, the HVWT division and suffered from a lack of depth and a lack of fighters the fan base could really get excited about watching. The hope for this to change rests in Lesnar, and this trio of talented, yet largely un-tested HVWT’s. Carwin passed his first major test, and now Velasquez needs to do the same.

by CL on Mar 31, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i’m still on the fence about whether i would call Herring a major test.

by bigbadbrad on Mar 31, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, although he is a definitive step-up as a middle-echelon fighter. He brings it, is hard to finish, and is seasoned.

by Johnny Farnham on Mar 31, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is going to be a war!

by shitleTOT.com on Mar 31, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmmm…another wrestler who is going to lay and pray Herring. Awwwwwessomeee.

by xxBAxx816 on Mar 31, 2009 12:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yea no doubt even Kongo didn’t want to trade with Herring; I don’t know why, but thats how it seemed.

by O damn he got caught on Mar 31, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

probably because of that punch Herring landed in the first 10 seconds.. Herring is more of a brawler so it’s sometimes hard for a guy with clean techniques like Kongo to get comfortable in a striking match..

by RoB on Mar 31, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kongo’s clean techniques??? My God! Kongo is one of the dirtiest strikers out there! My nuts hurt just thinking about some of his fights!

by stevo on Mar 31, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he is one of the cleaner strikers in the UFC’s hw division.. kneeing someone in the balls has nothing to do with it..

by RoB on Mar 31, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Congo vs Carwin would be cool.

by Johnny Farnham on Mar 31, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t think Kongo was to concerned about trading with Herring, being an ex K1 fighter although he probably didn’t appreciate the punch. I beleive because he had been practicing a bit of ground work in training, he truly beleived he had practiced enough to apply it on the octogan. It was pretty bad, he nearly lokked as bad as Lesner did on the ground with Herring. There is no disputing Kongos’ stand up skills though. Would have loved to have seen him against the new Arlovski. I would have given it to Kongo because i feel he is less hesitant to go in for the kill, but it would have been good to watch.

by Ade on Apr 1, 2009 3:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

a huge test for Cain, but he should be able to pull off a decsion victory.the Texas Crazy Horse has not been finished inside the Octagon.I don’t think that Cain will be the first.I know the Joe Silva is hoping that Cain is the next big star in the Hwt divison, but I’ll be going for the TexasCrazyHorse.

by the Levi on Mar 31, 2009 12:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m gonna be rooting for TCH on this one too even though Cain is the new blood and the favorite here, Heath is a wild card, you never know exactly what could happen in a fight with Herring.

by O damn he got caught on Mar 31, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im looking forward to his. I think Herring is a cool guy, but I see Cain going all the way to the top.

Cain by a TKO beatdown.

Another wrestler Heath will have problems with. Cain by UD

by muaythai_jitsu on Mar 31, 2009 12:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hope Herring wins.

by Lester the Pimp on Mar 31, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

guys herring may have a lot of losses but look who he has faught. Fedor, Brock, Big Nog. He lasted 3 rounds with Brock in a very one sided match. This is theperfect fight for both guys. A win for either is a quality win and a loss is brutal. It is not east to KO or TKO Herring who can drop bombs. Still picking Cain though.

by hatteras on Mar 31, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

na i think this is gonna be a tight ass fight..i think herrings hungry again and this is gonna be great!!!

by Randy for Couture on Mar 31, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Got to pull for Heath cause he needs a win.

by ognitinoc on Mar 31, 2009 4:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

im looking for a crazy horse win here. Couture, mir, brock, carwin, dos santos would all put away cain IMO he’s good but not title good. If he can finish heath he definately deserves a huge fight next. Heath tko 2nd round

by markg on Apr 1, 2009 6:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mir,Carwin and Dos santos would all be tko’d IMO. Herring will also, late 2nd round.
