UFC Quick Quote: KenFlo confirms Philly fight for his 'Beast Coast' fans on August 8

"I am happy to announce that I will be fighting BJ Penn on August 8th in Philadelphia, PA at UFC 101 for the UFC Lightweight title. I signed the fight contract over the weekend. It's going to be my first time fighting on the East Coast for the UFC and I will be training hard to represent my "Beast Coast" fans! My training camp will begin in June and then it will be full steam ahead till August. BJ Penn has been a wrecking machine at 155lbs and I guarantee that our fight will showcase MMA at its highest level."

--UFC Lightweight number one contender Kenny Florian shares his excitement via his official newsletter about facing BJ Penn at UFC 101 from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 8. "KenFlo" dropped a blood-soaked unanimous decision to Sean Sherk for a then-vacant division title at UFC 64: "Unstoppable" back in October 2006. He has not tasted defeat since, winning six straight against many of the best the class had to offer. Now he gets a second bite at the championship apple, against "The Prodigy," who may be the finest lightweight mixed martial artist in the world.

Although everyone knows I’m a big fan of Penn, I’m a proud resident of PHILLY and I like Kenny’s passion for the East Coast! I’m happy with whoever wins.

kenny’s gonna win i know it! i’d say he has a 90% shot at beating BJ, people just don’t see it but i do.. BJ’s movement is really poor, and Kenflo is gonna pick him apart with his kicks

I really think Kenny is going to win too!!

Put me down for Kenny!!

I hope Kenny wins, but if he loses, I hope that B.J. will not do something stupid like calling out GSP again. I could easily see B.J. doing just that though.

Even though I’m a huge Penn fan, Kenny’s the man and I like his passion for the East Coast as I am a proud resident of PHILLY baby!

I hope for a war and I’m happy no matter who wins.

ja434650 what happened? Did you manage to free yourself from BJ’s nut tentacles?

You used to defend BJ even when he strangled those 12 baby kittens and “touched” that Ethiopian orphan… and now you wouldn’t mind if BJ lost?

Is world peace coming??!!

He must have been doing some visualizing and yoga….don’t forget you can get in touch with your inner self using those techniques.

I’m hoping only for one winner – and it isn’t the one that the lamprey is latched onto.

as a huge bj fan i think kenny would pull this off UD. i think he’ll just pull off a machida type victory just to win the belt.

by mikeybear on Mar 30, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no bj has a ton of power in his hands and i think he will ko florian, kenny has never really been hit flush and for some reason i dont think he has a great chin but i guess we will find out in this fight.

by matt on Mar 30, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know why everyone always shits on Machida. He does what it takes to win, just like any other figher.

Don’t give me this boring fight style crap, watching Lesnar sit on Heath for 3 rounds wasn’t exciting, but it still gave him a victory, and somehow??? a title shot.

Back on topic, Kenny will pull it off, he’s hungry for it. BJ on the other hand is just that, hungry. :)

by UFC Champ on Mar 30, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny has a good shot at winning this! Think about this, we dont know what frame of mind BJ is in after his destruction. Kenny has got good at (stick and move) fighting. Overall, Kenny is a well rounded fighter.

Why don’t you try posting 3 more times there funny guy

by ViolentMike on Mar 30, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny has a pretty good chin and shouldn’t be underestimated at all in this fight. He’s well rounded and knows how to stick to game plan. As far as BJ’s state of mind if he is delusional enough to truly believe that he could have had a shot against GSP if it weren’t for that dime sized amount of Vaseline- then maybe he is ok mentally. He very well maybe excusing it all away and not be as devastated as we all think.

by DSmith on Mar 30, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV, stop… You know BJ is going to destroy Kenny, just like all the other LW. BJ is not losing to Kenny.

by BNF on Mar 30, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BNF, BJ losing to Kenny is exactly what Im hopeing for! I wont tell you “I told you so” again if it happens LOL. Kenny will win by (stick and move) Split Decision.

by JV on Mar 30, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny cannot run for 5 rounds like he did agaisn’t Huerta.

by BNF on Mar 30, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course he can. I think BJ will take this but it will be close and Kenny does have a shot.

by DSmith on Mar 30, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention Kenny is training with GSP that will result in a good gameplan and like I said before unless BJ improves his cardio or finishes kenny in the first couple rounds kenny has a great shot at taking the belt from BJ. I wonder if GSP will be Kenny’s corner? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate insult against BJ if Kenny wins with GSP in his corner.

by Puck Head on Mar 30, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

then GSP can go bitch slap BJ with a hand full of grease!

by brendan on Mar 30, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ was pretty destructive after his loss to Hughes…Kenny will go down

by Robert(1) on Mar 30, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta agree. Even though i will be rooting for Kenflo, and hated how far BJ went with his antics on greasegate, BJ has far more natural skills and his brown george foreman head can take a beating. Only way Kenflo wins is if BJ comes with a gas tank of a scooter. Which is very possible.

sorry to burst your bubble trikz but bj isnt losing to kenny and i dont bj losing to anybody in the ufc lightweight division. But anyway i pumped for the ufc to be coming back to the east coast especially philly, i will be getting tickets to this event that is shaping very very nice so far:

Bj Penn vs. Kenny Florian
Forrest Griffin vs. Thiago Silva
Matt Hammill vs. Brandon Vera
Kurt Pelligrino vs. Josh Neer

by matt on Mar 30, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dope card… even with Nog/Randy being moved, probably the 2nd best, on paper, of 09.

by BNF on Mar 30, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they should move the Forrest fight to 102 and get Maia and Marquart seperate fights on this card. Main card right there.

by WB on Mar 30, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no maia and marquardt should fight each other for the next title shot in the middle weight division.

by matt on Mar 30, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bisping-Hendo are fighting in July and the winner of that gets a title shot Dana has said. Therefore fight after that wont be till LATE ’09 early ’10 and I dont think it would be smart for either Maia or Marquart to wait that long. If they both win, have them fight each other in September as a #1 contender match.

by WB on Mar 30, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really can’t pick a winner on this one, it all depends on Penn’s approach to the fight; imo if he trains his ass off instead of screwing around then there’s no one that can beat him at 155. After the GSP fight, I really question wether or not his heart is really in this at all. I don’t doubt that he likes to fight, but what about all the intense training and focus leading up to the fight. It seems like he’s just trying to leave his mark on something; find a place in history. You don’t see too many guys in their early 30’s that truley love the sport but are ready to call it quits and retire if they get a couple big wins.

by O damn he got caught on Mar 30, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

BJ at 155 has to be extremely physcially fit and generally that is a sign that his heart is in it 100% as well as his mind. Before the GSP fight everybody would have said this is a lock for BJ and now just because he lost to the greaser he is done? I don’t buy it for a second. I feel bad for Kenny because I really like him.

by BNF on Mar 30, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“the greaser” LMFAO! Thats messed up BNF!

by JV on Mar 30, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol what did BJ show in that fight that makes you think he has anything for florian? i saw an outmatched, out of shape loser, and thats exactly what florian is going to make him look like as well

by brendan on Mar 30, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

1 fight does not make or break a fighter. BJ is the best 155er on the planet.

by BNF on Mar 30, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to see BJ lose, but I still think he’s the best LW in the world. We’ll see where his head is at I guess.

by LJ on Mar 30, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so when he loses will he still be the best 155er in the world?

by brendan on Mar 30, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’ll be the best 155er selling burgers at McHilo’s…..

by deadgrassinyeard on Mar 30, 2009 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brendan, although I too can’t stand B.J., Florian is not GSP. There are many physical attributes that GSP had that Kenny will not be able to use to his advantage.

by naturalshadow on Mar 31, 2009 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ penn fan till the end. He will beat Florian, and go down in history as one of three people EVER to hold two belts in seperate weight classes.

by The Anomaly on Mar 31, 2009 3:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ’s plan is to find a way to win the 1st round, then retire before the 2nd round, so he leaves on a high note.

i know i heard that florian was going to train with gsp for this fight in a blog awhile back… was that ever confirmed ? if he works with gsp i see florian coming up with a gameplan to neutralize penn and win this fight , if florian can neutralize penns early game and avoid some big shots then very possible , if penn doesn’t want to retire and actually tries to put 100 percent into the fight then it’s gonna be a straight up war i don’t see how this fight could be boring .. i can’t see it as anything but fast paced.. i wanna say decision but if it were to stop i see it being a submission in the 4th to 5th when someone gasses cause i don’t really see this fight stopping due to strikes … since i’m not really biased i see someone winning by submission in the championship rounds . really going to enjoy this one , along with hammill and vera should be good 2 altho vera hasn’t impressed me of late hamill by head kick anyone ?

by monoxide911 on Mar 30, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kenny is training with GSP if you go back a few weeks in the post you can find a Off The Record interview were GSP talks a little smack about preparing Kenny to beat BJ and how he really did cheat in their fight……by getting a man to kiss BJ when he was walking towards the ring LOL. And it even shows a replay of BJ getting kissed by a man LOL.

by Lester the Pimp on Mar 30, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You’re right about the strip. 15 months between defenses is unsportsmanlike.

by ftg314 on Mar 30, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why should BJ be stripped it’s not like he used roids, like some other champ. So he hasn’t defended the title since last may, big deal he’s defending now.

by neeko on Mar 31, 2009 5:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m totally cheering for Kenny…but to be honest, and as much as it hurts me to say it, he has little chance of winning. I used to be a huge BJ fan, but I’ve hopped off that wagon as of late. I can still see that BJ is the best 155er, and a total beat-down from the best 170er doesn’t change that. I will still be cheering for Kenny, but my brain tells me I will be upset at the end of the night.

by MM_Eh on Mar 30, 2009 5:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ill be cheering for Kenny. Ive really gone off BJ with his whole whiney excuse fest for getting a whooping by Georges.

by UK_Chris on Mar 30, 2009 6:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder how much the huge chorus of “booooos” will alter BJ’s psyche when he enters the arena before the fight.

Even if he wins, I think he’ll get booed when Rogan interviews him.

Can you say “fall from grace”?

by ftg314 on Mar 30, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

U guys are unbelievable! So BJ loses to GSP and people start jumping ship and now believing Florian will beat BJ!!?? Who cares if GSP is training Florian! He doesn’t have the size or strength that GSP has. BJ for the win.

So what does that make ken flo after bj puts it on em. I have to admit I didn’t think much of bj following the gsp fight, and still don’t. But no way he loses back to back fights. He should stay away from 170 and continue to dominate 155ers. Bj just has way too much pride to admit he got dominated for 4 rounds.

by mr guillotine on Mar 31, 2009 10:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Something tells me Cheating is Cheating is either penn himself,a relative or someone in his camp or someone who is his number one fan on bjpenn.com LOL. Bitterness and denial is a dangerous thing it will eat you up inside, and make you lose focus and rob of your future, try a new name like the past is the past. Penn has only had 2 titles fights that went to a decision at 155 and he didn’t win either of them, both guys better strikers than sherk who penn beat in 3 rounds.

This fight is far from a lock, kenny is a much better striker than sherk and has better kicks than penn, penn has better hands and both guys are good on the ground on paper penn is better but this isn’t a bjj match with a gi on. Florian’s sub defense I think is good enough to avoid submissions on the ground. Nobody has a clue how this fight will go, it could end in the first round with penn mounting kenny and pounding him to a tko or kenny winning a slight decision, which might happen or penn winning a landslide decision, I just wish the fight was in may rather than august.
