UFC rankings/MMA rankings to be featured in USA Today

Big news for the mixed martial arts community coming from the SB Nation ...
Congrats to Luke Thomas and the rest of the BloodyElbow.com crew for landing a major deal with the nation's largest daily newspaper, USA Today, to feature monthly mixed martial arts rankings.
Here is how it will work:
"The rankings, which will offer a definitive perspective of top MMA fighters across all weight-classes, will be released monthly and published in the Sports section of USA TODAY, online at USATODAY.com and on SB Nation's MMA commentary and community blog, BloodyElbow.com ... The USA TODAY/SB Nation Consensus MMA Rankings are compiled each month by Nate Wilcox and Richard Wade of BloodyElbow.com. The rankings utilize each of the top MMA rankings from multiple unique sources. A weighted-formula is applied to normalize and distill the various rankings into one consensus ranking per weight class."
To check out the latest USAT/SBN rankings click here. We've also listed their top 10 in each class after the jump for your convenience.

Okami before Henderson?
Thales Leites, n Rich Franklin 9-10?
We need at least 5 guys to rank them not 2

dont agree much with the LW ranking and shields at number 4???
dont know why sylvia is there i think he would get schooled by overeem and werdum
forrest atm deserves to be at number 4 but i can see him dropping down to the lower ranks of LHW after his next 2-3 fights

Forgetting everything else except for wins against top guys, how is arlovski ranked over big nog? He only has a win against timmy who lost to both nog and mur. He won against fabricio but so did Nog. Lost to Ricco (who was top 10 once) while Nog won. Seriously after his KO to fedor he should be next to your cheick Kongos.

Dude almost all of those rankings are suspect. I would not agree with half the stuff up there. Like Franklin is ranked 10th? Really give me a fucking break

mmaweekly got Forrest ranked ahead of Rampage??

what makes that Franklin ranking worse is that yushin is #2. what the heck. franklin is surely top5? he lost a split dec to hendo and he beat okami by UD. erg, these rankings are hard to do. and why is AA 3? who has he beat? werdum? wow. i love AA, but he is like Irvin to me. fun to watch, has some good wins… but never takes the big fight (he won a vacant title against Eilers ffs… and he didnt even beat him… Eilers knee blew.)

they make these ranks on their opinions right? how the hell is Shogun top 10? they might aswell put Tito in there he beats half of that list.. why not put Jon Jones in there too, he would give Jardine and Shogun a serious a$$whoopin.. Rich Franklin is surely a top 5 MW how Yushin Okami is #2 is a mystery, and how Leites is infront of Franklin is also unbelivable..
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions
Rob this is one thing me and you can both agree on.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 26, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
RoB – These rankings are a compilation of rankings from lots of websites and sources. I’m guessing the problem with Franklin is that by skipping around between divisions, he’s being dropped from either the LHW or MW rankings on some sites. That means when they compile all of the rankings, he’s basically split between two divisions and drops down in both. He’ll move up as soon as he sticks at LHW for awhile.
by Ricker04 on Mar 26, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Forrest should be ahead of Rampage…he beat him. Whatever you may think of the fight, Forrest has a win over rampage. These rankings suck…they should recheck their formula.
by MM_Eh on Mar 26, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions
.. Forrest got handed a piece of paper that said .. you won by unianimous decision!! Come on.. that was a split decision.. either way.. or a draw.. if that said.. Page should of never had his title taken away from him like that.
Forrest couuldn’t even defend his title..not once.
Page defeated Chuck.. when he was still on top.. defeated the former pride middle weight champ.. Henderson.. Got robbed by the judges in the Forrest fight.. then comes back.. Ko’s Wandy.. then beats Jardine.. who KO’d Forrest.. so How does Forrest belong ahead of Rampage??
by PhilQNY on Mar 26, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
MM-Eh….take into account Forrest lost his last fight, while Rampage has won his last two. If we put fighters ahead of an opponent they happen to beat once upon a time…everyone would be tied for first. These rankings are formed by the latest wins you have and who it was against.
by c-war on Mar 26, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Rampage is number 2 because he is the #1 contender, and will be challenging the winner of machida/evans. Its not just about who beat who.
by Big D on Mar 26, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions
no, if that was the case Dennis Hallman would still be ranked higher than Matt Hughes
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s not like the Forrest/Rampage fight was years ago. And the only person Forrest has lost to since is the current champ. I firmly believe that Forrest won that fight, but that’s just this guy’s feelings, and I know a lot of people would agree. I do agree that Page is the number-one contender, but in a sport like this, the #1 contender isn’t always the second best.
If anything it shows how subjective these rankings can be, but as subjective as these are…nobody can say that Franklin deserves to be behind the likes of Lawler, Maia and Santiago. I like those guys…but come on.
by MM_Eh on Mar 26, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
so Forrest losses against Tito, Jardine and Rashad doesn’t count? Rampage has one loss in the UFC which was a hyper controversial decision by the judges.. I think Rampage has done more than enough to be at that 2nd spot..

Obviously, every ranking system can satisfy any given person 100%. But, as often is the case with mma rankings, they can be frustrating to read. I often feel that they are incredibly underwhelming. Thankfully, I feel that these rankings set to appear monthly in USAToday are the best rankings top-to-bottom, overall.

by kevin on Mar 26, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s pretty PC over there. But it’s funny how they dont condone fighter bashing, but on Luke’s radio show the other day Nick Diaz bailed on him and his co host subtlety bashed Diaz and Luke stated “there are so many stupid f-ing fighters out there…” when tallking about how a bunch of fighters have “flaked” on his show.
First off, wouldn’t referring to fighters as “stupid f-ing fighters” in any context be considered fighter bashing? I for one don’t care if anyone bashes a fighter, and I understand it is a free country, but to threaten to ban people from your blog for doing the something that you yourself are not completely innocent of doing seems to be a bit hypocritical.
Also, if a bunch of guys are flaking out on your radio show, then maybe it’s not the fighters and maybe it’s your radio show. Maybe they just don’t want to go on your radio show and feel it’s not worth the and that they will get BETTER exposure else where.
IMO, Brent, Luke and Nate are bloviators that are into themselves to the fullest extent. The only real reason I go to the sight is to read Michael Rome’s stuff, the other posts are normally so long and boring that you could mistake them for some tiring speech you might hear on CSPAN.
by El Mexicutioner, formerly The Mexicutioner on Mar 26, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Spoken like someone with positively no knowledge of how MMA media works.
The “no fighter bashing rule” is only for Bloody Elbow. Online communities tend to devolve into petty, nasty language and that can become the norm if the ranks aren’t policed. It’s not just the one-off comment, but the culture that can be created when communities aren’t moderated.
Radio, on the other hand, is quite a different matter. In fact, candor or other forms of free expression have to be encouraged. I don’t have to worry about community up keep with a radio show, since, well, there’s no online community to speak of. And if callers get out of hand, I can just hang up on them. As for me, I wasn’t even referring to Nick, but thanks for putting words in my mouth.
As for the problem just being my show, do me favor: talk to anyone and everyone who has ever tried to book fighters and ask them what their experience is. Did you know Penn has flaked on this site four times? Do you know how many people have flaked on Sam Caplan? Kevin Iole? Jordan Breen? No, you don’t. You don’t because you don’t know what you’re talking about, but insist on giving an opinion.
And that’s where you and I differ. I don’t really care if you don’t like my site, since people who matter – say, the editors who run USA Today – do. You – someone who issues opinion with positively no regard for how media works – will continue to like or not like without any real understanding of what’s going on. So, don’t visit my site. I don’t care. We’re going to be just fine without you, I promise. Just do yourself a favor and please stop embarrassing yourself in public. It’s honestly very unseemly.
by Luke Thomas on Mar 26, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
But you obviously care enough to comment by coming over to another site with this typed diatribe.
Go back where you came from…
by OJR on Mar 26, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Hey Luke, what type of numbers you pulling down on that esteemed radio show of yours? Talk about embarrassing yourself in public.
What was funny about this particular segment is that you asked your intern (you know the now bitter towards Nick Diaz guy), or whatever he is, “have you ever seen a crop of people that are less reliable as MMA fighters as guests?” You then go on to say “…it happens so often I don’t even care about it..” But yet you go down a list of people that have flaked on your show and talk about the subject for how many minutes? One would have to think that since Diaz’s “flaking” on you started the the whole conversation that part of what was discussed would be directed towards him.
I’m glad that someone like me, a person with no idea of how MMA media works, was able to get your attention. I may not be the MMA media mogul that you are, but I do know sub par broadcasting and journalism when I hear it or read it. Those political radio shows must have really stuck to you because your arrogant bloviating is a quality that definitely reeks of a D.C. elitist. I knew this would get back to you one way or another. Thanks for your time. Your input is noted.

thing is, mexicutioner is right. I have no care in the world or no hand in any pot. Bloody elbow has every right to censor their site however they want, bt it just goes to show the validity of their site is bogus! It’s comparable to a communist state! agree with me or be banned. I remember mexicutioners conversation about Kimbo, quite frankly he didn’t even bash him, he simply stated that in his opinion, Kimbo wasn’t a true mixed martial artist and wasn’t good for the sport. ANYONE who disagrees with this assessment is clearly the one with limited MMA knowledge. Anyone who believes that fighting a few bums in a backyard and then training 6 months with Bas makes you relevant in the sport is clearly jaded!
On another note, my opinion on the site (bloody elbow) is that it’s not even in the same league as mmamania. The writers and contributers on the site make up 75% of the comments too. If mania posted as much as the contributers over at bloody elbow, every comment section would have 500 comments…has bloody elbow ever had 500 comments under one topic?
In case you haven’t read it, newspaper circulation is on the decline if not on the way out, once anyone with any knowledge of mma sees the joke of a ranking system you have, you’re “column” will be out too. That’s the reason mania doesn’t do rankings anymore, too subjective…my rankings and yours will be different.
just my opinion…oh, and to say someone didn’t bother you by going to a website other than your own to write specifically to him, shows that you clearly did care and/or were bothered by his comments!
by kevin on Mar 26, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions
lol, one last thing, went over to bloody elbow, they got 30 comments by 5 different readers as the most commented on story of the day. Just think what it would be if mania didn’t give him this play today!! f*cking lame ass douche!

I wouldn’t say Mexi got made, and honestly I generally don’t like what he posts. The fact that Luke felt the need to come to someone else’s site and defend himself followed by the statement, “I don’t care”, is dumb. If you don’t care, don’t spend the time to respond. If you do care, and you obviously do if you’re going to toot your own horn with the USA Today name dropping garbage, then don’t say you don’t care. And as far as those guys being bloviators…that post pretty much proved it to me.

What I do know, as a “professional” Luke, you shouldn’t comment about someone that doesn’t agree with you. Very poor on your part.
I was in the automotive performance industry, and online forums can be very cruel, full of lies and B.S., but as a professional we would stay out of these online “wars”.

Yes the heavyweight rankings are suspect! There’s a guy ranked towards the bottom of the list who wouldn’t pass a drug test and’s rubbish anyway!
I don’t think Sean Sherk’s in the top 5 lightweights in the world, with or without the roids!
Is Okami really the second best middleweight in the world?

by attakdog on Mar 26, 2009 9:38 AM EDT reply actions
I would say Carlos Condit gets waaaayyy too much respect right now. Who has he fought? Nobody even close to a top 10 opponent. And Josh Koscheck should not be at #7 either imo. He got manhandeled by Alves, and the loss to Paulo Thiago showed me more that Koscheck might not be a top ten fighter, rather then Thiago deserves to be #12. Both should be a little bit lower.

I think the Heavyweight rankings aren’t bad, at least Overeem is getting some respect. As for the other divisions, middleweight seems odd because of Franklin at #10. Lightweight I think should be Aoki above Penn for simply the cry-baby factor.
by Belisarius on Mar 26, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions
Overeem was shit at LH, he wouldn’t beat any of the top 10 HW, even with his new found enhanced muscles!
by attakdog on Mar 26, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Overeem has the Vitor Belfort complex. He has all the potential in the world, but none of the heart (and conditioning) required to be a champion. I can’t even count how many fights he was winning against top fighters (Shogun, Chuck, Little Nog, Werdum, etc) where he eventually tires out and/or gives up and loses.
by yohnstoppable on Mar 26, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions
If you think Aoki deserves props over anyone in the crybaby department, you obviously haven’t seen him bawling like crazy after losing a fight. Check out his reaction after Hansen KOd him.
Anyway, i’m not too fond of these rankings (Arlovski is way too high in heavies, and franklin is way to low in mid), but at least we have a list that isn’t insanely japenese biased with only penn on the rankings.

A minor example, after just having a quick look at the lightweight rankings, Frankie Edgar is at 21 when he should probably be higher than all of those DREAM fighters with the exception of Aoki, and even that’s debatable.
By the way, BJ would tear Aoki’s tight-pants from his ass! LOL.
(I ain’t a BJ ‘nuthugger’ either.)

Disagreeing with a ranking is one thing. This goes beyond that. These rankings are total crap.
