Paulo Thiago looking to make it 2-0 against AKA at UFC 100

Props: Tatame.com
Quoteworthy:
Man, it’s just the beginning of a long walk. I want to set myself in the UFC, show my job and I’m just an employee. Who else they put against me, I’ll fight. I don’t have anything to ask, just to thank. I haven’t done anything yet, I just did one fight until now, and I’m just thinking in Jon Fitch now, nothing else.
A humble Paulo Thiago -- fresh off his KO upset over Josh Koscheck at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" -- looks to make it two straight against the boys over at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) when he tangles with Kos' friend and teammate Jon Fitch at UFC 100 from the Mandalay Bay Events center on July 11.

I’m a fan of Paulo Thiago already. Doesn’t mean I think he will defeat Jon Fitch.. Fitch.. is a beast.. went all 5 rounds with GSP.. and I’m a fan of his.. let the best man win.
Paulo is a special ops police officer in Rio.. these are the cops that come in and save the other cops.. he has seen some wars on the streets of Rio.. Believe it.

what if this guy upsets Fitch? Everyone would instantly hop right on his nuts. We havent even seen his bread and butter yet which is his Jits. Not saying I expect him to beat fitch, but I dont know enough about tHiago to say that it ISN’T a possibility. what if?
by john on Mar 26, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions
hope so.. Fitch is so goddamn boring, all he does is takin guys down trying to stay on top and tire the other guy out
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Fitch doesn’t throw wild punches so I see how someone who knows nothing would think it looks boring. The WWE might be more of your interest.
I think Paulo has a lot of potential but is a bit too young to get past fitch this time. I see it ending in the second by fitch’s boring GnP…
by Arnold on Mar 26, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Fitch is anything but boring. His win over Gono was dominating. He tried to submit the dude, but Gono is a tough customer.
As for Thiago, I like the guy’s attitude. He’s not full of himself. This kind of attitude can carry him far. Beating Fitch would be HUGE for his stock. This will be a good fight.
by Clint on Mar 26, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions
ok Arnold, i bet i know about 100% more than you do about sports so please chill out.. In my opinion he’s boring cause he isn’t really trying to finish he is more about holding position, that doesn’t make him a bad fighter i know he’s good.. and i watched his fight against Gono he tried hard
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
PhilQNY, those cops are also notoriously corrupt and brutal … and with all due respect, I hardly think what the guy may or may not have done while wearing body armor and toting a submachinegun are relevant to how he will perform in the cage against elite athletes.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 26, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions
oh it is relevant, he’s always gonna be calm in there even if he’s taking a beating and keep looking for a way to come back to win, which he just did in his last fight.
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Whatever, there are a lot of tough cops and soldiers and firefighters out there who will get completely pwned in the Octagon. One-on-one cagefighting against a prepared and disciplined athlete is a far cry from kicking some crachhead’s door in with your heavily armed buddies.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 26, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions
He wont beat Fitch. Fitch will TKO him in the 2nd or 3rd, or win a decision. PT will get mauled in this fight. He looks like a damn retard too. I hope he loses.
by Synyster on Mar 26, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions
well JJ, Paulo isn’t just another cop he’s a trained athlete too u know. they’re in a sport u make it sound like he’s in more danger inside the octagon than he is on the streets in brazil where guys pulls knifes and guns..
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions
no way he beats fitch in this 1 … fitch grinds out wins and seems to have a good chin and although he has been caught in several submissions he seems to be impossible to submit
i think he is a definite top 5 WW and thiago just looks sloppy in his stand up never seen his BJJ… but i doubt he will have much to offer against fitch
by ufcaddict on Mar 26, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Fitch won’t stand with him, period. It would be hilarious if paulo gets another hail mary KO. Also ufcaddict – thiago looks sloppy in his standup? Seriously how? He would kill fitch on the feet then gnp if it goes to the ground. He has more than enough power to finish him.
by NameNotRequired on Mar 26, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions
no he won’t. Fitch’s standup is too slow, he’ll look to use his size to wear him out, take him down, and break his spirit as he tries to do in everyone of his fights.. Fitch is a safety first fighter that never spends too much time on his feets in any of his fights so there won’t be much of a possibility for Paulo to get a TKO/KO win again..
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions
This guys hasn’t proven sh*t yet, Kos was kickin his ass and got caught, if he does the same with fitch then ill be impressed.

Ditto! Been a fan since that Koscheck TKO! Man, I just love Kos when he’s losin’! though he’ll be facin’ a wall in Jon Fitch, I still believe that Thiago would stick it to him. I just don’t know how though for I haven’t watched him prior to the Kos fight. Plus I’d take any upset any time!
by Syd[a.k.a. "The Martial Fartist"] on Mar 26, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
He can keep dreaming, Fitch is the man and WONT be knocked silly like Kos. Fitch unanimous descion!
by Rashad-Marquardt-GSP-Sherk on Mar 26, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I see Fitch doing to this guy what KOS should have done. Fitch will have a game plan, instead of just throwing hay-makers. AKA doesn’t have any good coaches? I haven’t heard anything about the coaching staff over there. If there is someone over there looking over the fighters why don’t they talk some sense into Kos?
by jay on Mar 26, 2009 12:10 PM EDT reply actions
Maybe that is why everyone calls him “Crazy” Bob Cook…
I am not a believer in Thiago. Kos got super sloppy and looked at his feet while he hung a jab out there and got clipped by a lucky punch. The surprised look on Paulo’s face was even more surprised looking than most of us fans’. Fitch will take him down and GnP him until the ref pulls him off. I see the fight going no other way. If the Kos fight is the only Paulo fight you have seen, go to youtube and they got a couple of his older fights – he looks AWFUL.
I can’t wait to see the lines for this fight so I can win back all the money on lost on Kos’s last fight, and then some!

DREAM 8:
Sergei Kharitonov vs. Jeff Monson!
Who do you guys got in this one?
I am a die hard Sergie fan, so I will have to go with him. Word on the streets of Russia..lol, is he has bulked up to an “well conditioned” 265 lbs…If thats true then this fight should be very interesting!
by john on Mar 26, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions
he used to weigh around 240 lbs right? a well conditioned Sergei at 265lbs sure sounds suspicious.
but whatever i’ll take Sergei over Monson his reach advantage and boxing should be too much!
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
he trains with allistair now and they both are mysteriously getting around 265. im a huge fan, but i wont be surprised if he started juicing. but hell WAR SERGEI , i hope he knocks monson the fuck out so he doesnt get another bullshit decision

Agree 100%. Kos said that he doesn’t care who he fights, what they look like or how they have won or lost fights in the past. That is some of the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. He deserved to get KTFO. The greatest fighters in the world are known for studying their opponent for hours on end, guys like GSP, Fedor, Anderson. WTF does Kos think he is. I used to like the guy more and never thought he was an idiot but now I’m wandering.
by Adam T. on Mar 26, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Adam that wasn’t about Kos studying his opponent or not, that was a technical mistake he made in the fight.. he dominated and lost his head, one error and it was over! I’m sure he’s training hard to avoid doing the same mistake again
by RoB on Mar 26, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. Nonetheless his arrogance and stupidity in the remarks regarding his opponents is inexcusable. I thought he was smarter than that but apparently not.

Third best sir, Thiago will beat him if there’s ever a rematch after he beats Grease St Pierre!
by Dude! on Mar 26, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Fitch will beat Thiago Alves in a rematch! I honestly think Fitch could take him down at will. Kos took the fight with Alves, on extremly short notice, and Hughes couldnt take him down. The same Matt people keep saying is washed up. GSP will put the myth that is Thiago Alves back in his place.
by lokie on Mar 26, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Alves is pretty much walking the green mile, just a matter of time before he gets put down by gsp.

Alves when get a rude awakening when he fights GSP the same way that Fitch did. GSP is going to go on the warpath after all the bullshit about greasegate. Alves is going to get GNP’d into a bloody mess. Can’t wait.
by Adam T. on Mar 26, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
John, you said the same thing about Penn. Have you ever picked GSP to win a fight? On July 11th you’ll realize that Alves is not well-rounded enough to hang with St.Pierre. This guy is invincible at 170 right now. Don’t worry though, we won’t hold it against ya.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 26, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Jeremy: actually GSP is one of my very favorite fighters so I dont want to come off as hating on the guy. I really am a big fan of his, he just happened to be facing 2 fighters I like, just as much…so i think i have remained unbiased when making my comments. Its not like, I am predicting Gabe Rudiger to beat GSP…Alves is a monster too, and a legit #1 contender.
When a champion losses to a legit #1 contender, its not the end of the world…all that means is that you are #2 now, instead of #1.
I do really like GSP…I just think Alves is a bad match up for him. Lets be honest…GSP isnt as comfortable striking as he once was…He didnt like being hit that way by Serra. In the rematch he REFUSED to exchange with Serra. GSP is well rounded and he can do what he wants, but I would have thought that GSP would have used his supperior striking to beat Serra standing in the rematch, but wanted NO parts of it…He stiked a little with Fitch, but wasnt comfortable doing so…
I think you guys will be surprised when you see that GSP wont be able t take Alves down at will, like he has done to everyone else. Im sure he will put Alves on his back at some point, but it wont happen at will, and keeping Alves down will be very hard.
Answer me this: would you agree that if GSP cant take alves down, that he is in trouble? I believe Alves is one of the best p4p strikers in mma!
by john on Mar 26, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions
John: Yes, Alves is a handful for anyone standing up… and I agree that GSP hasn’t fought standing up as much since the Serra incident.
Check out my post in the Fitch thread from a couple days ago where I compare their striking styles… I’m too busy with work today to type a long-winded response.
In a nutshell, I pointed out that GSP’s North American-style kickboxing is technically superior to Alves’ Muay Thai wrecking-ball style… and that GSP’s striking has become underrated because we havn’t seen it much lately. His reach and jab is far better than Alves’… and I think he can goad Alves into coming in close where he can take him down… and I don’t think he will have much trouble taking Alves down based on the Prime Time show where he was throwing Rashad and Marquardt around. Stuffing Hughes’ takedowns is one thing… GSP is a different animal.
Once Alves is down he is dogmeat… GSP can pass anyone’s guard at will and his GnP is brutal. If GSP doesn’t get caught early, Alves will gas much quicker than him and will be easier to take down as the fight progresses.
Anyway, it will be a great fight and the toughest test for Georges yet.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 26, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
And to answer your question, john … Georges could be in trouble if he can’t take Alves down, but:
1) Not as much trouble as you think. Georges is a fantastic striker in his own right, and is very elusive to boot. He nwas sloppy and unprepared against Serra, that won’t happen again.
2) He WILL be able to take Alves down. Nobody has come close to stuffing GSP’s takedowns and it’s not going to start here. Alves has been taken down by lesser fighters.

“Once Alves is down he is dogmeat… GSP can pass anyone’s guard at will and his GnP is brutal.”
I wonder why this is…..Haha I had to say it. But on a serious note I agree that if GSP doesn’t get caught in the first round he will end up pulling this out.

Question is, who does Fitch fight after he wins? He’s already fought GSP and Alves, and he is teammates with Swick and Kos. I honestly think he’s running out of competition in the UFC. I suppose he could fight Hazelett or Saunders (if he beats Swick, and thats a big IF.) Or maybe he could fight Chris Wilson if Kos loses again. Maybe that could be Fitch’s new job in the UFC – destroying everyone his teammates lose to. But seriosuly, I bet Fitch wants a rematch with GSP, but if GSP beats Alves, there’s a good chance his next fight will be against Anderson Silva on superbowl weekend 2010. Where does this leave Fitch?
by mburtoni on Mar 26, 2009 12:26 PM EDT reply actions
Honestly, those AKA boys need to fight each other, aside from the teammates thing Kos VS Fitch makes so much sense, Swick needs to have another impressive win or two

I definitely want to see GSP-Silva at Superbowl Weekend 2010, but I want to see Maia get a crack at the Spider too if he keeps winning. IMO he poses the biggest threat to dethroning AS.
by WB on Mar 26, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Maia poses a huge threat on the ground, but he eats a lot of punches trying to get the fight there. Do that against Silva and it’s Goodnight Irene.

Fitch is a huge 170 and if he wanted to im sure he could move up a class, but GSP 2 is first

Paulo has his work cut in for him. I saw Fitch’s last fight with Gono and I was impressed with how well Jon was able to close the distance. Fitch would throw combos and then almost instantly get into clinch then the takedown. His jiu-jitsu looked amazing, He almost pulled off that armbar from rear mount. Gono was lucky to be saved by the end of the round.

I see fitch destroying this guy, like koscheck SHOULD have but this is MMA shit happens. I don’t think this guy is close to top ten and IMO he kind of pulled a serra. I agree with what someone said earlier fitch will take him down and ground and pound him to a tko. I doubt this guy makes it out of the first round, fitch is better than him in every way, maybe paulo is better or as good at subs but I doubt that’s going to be a problem.

I hate to point this out jeremyjackson as gsp is one of my favorite fighters and you and gord are one of my favorite bloggers because you guys seem factual and intelligent but you said…
“And to answer your question, john … Georges could be in trouble if he can’t take Alves down, but…”
1) Not as much trouble as you think. Georges is a fantastic striker in his own right, and is very elusive to boot. He was sloppy and unprepared against Serra, that won’t happen again.
*I pretty much agree with this but this is a matter of opinion.
2) He WILL be able to take Alves down. Nobody has come close to stuffing GSP’s takedowns and it’s not going to start here. Alves has been taken down by lesser fighters.
*I also agree that he will be able to take alves down but again this is my opinion and it would be shocking if alves stuffed all of gsp’s take downs during the fight. The part I know to be false about this is when you said nobody had come close to stuffing gsp’s takedowns…fitch did 2 or more times in there fight, and I think serra did once in there second fight. Koscheck couldn’t get alves down who is far more explosive with take downs than hughes, I think hughes got alves down mainly because alves had a sprained ankle. With the koscheck fight alves was all healed up and had more time to improve his takedown defense, it looked like koscheck was trying to uproot an oak tree with alves. Yes John was WAY off on his prediction of gsp/penn 2 and he could be WAY off again on alves/gsp only time will time, by the way for some reason I like it when John is wrong. ;P
by nathan on Mar 26, 2009 6:25 PM EDT reply actions
Great posts nathan… Fitch stuffed GSP a couple of time but he got taken down plenty of times too… What I meant was that GSP hasn’t been CONSISTENTLY stuffed by any of his opponents. If he’s decided to take them down, he’s been able to.
Alves’ takedown defence is improved, but IMO it isn’t any better than Fitch’s or Koscheck’s, who are excellent and experienced wrestlers. Hughes was taken to the ground easily by GSP in their final bout as well. Penn put up a good takedown defence for the firsyt round, but it cost him a lot of gas he got flung around after that.
Alves will be taken down, and he will be kept there and battered like Rihanna. GSP needs to watch out for knees when he’s on his way in. Ususally he mixes his strikes in with his takedown attempts that it’s hard to anticipate the shoot.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 26, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Oops….I just watched the koscheck/alves fight again and alves right ankle was wrapped so I guess I was wrong and it wasn’t 100% healed. Man koscheck got the shit kicked out of him, average stand up against a muay thai power striker who you can’t take down equals bad night for the average striker. I also watch his fight with chris lytle and lytle won the first round and looked very impressive and alves actually looked exhausted. Lytle was outboxing him but those leg kicks took there toll in the second round and then the idiot doctor stopped the fight. Alves hasn’t fought anyone like GSP yet, a very diversified striker, black belt in bjj, explosive powerfull wrestler…someone who’s really good at everything, should be one hell of a fight.
by nathan on Mar 26, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions
One last comment I just watched the fitch/gono fight and what a snooze fest. One thing I really don’t understand is why the hell was he training so hard in thai land on his muay thai only to clinch all night and bear hug what was the point of trying to improve his muay thai? His striking looked like shit, it looked much better in the gsp fight, and he barely stood at all with gono….weird.
