Anderson Silva: Roy Jones Jr. boxing match practically a done deal

Props: Graciemag.com
Quoteworthy:
After my contract with the UFC ends and end my career in MMA, I intend to have a boxing match with Roy Jones. That’s something that’s already been arranged, it’s all practically a done deal. Now I just have to wait and see.
UFC middleweight champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva seems to be merely biding his time until the completion of his UFC contract to finally test himself in the world of professional boxing. "The Spider" first mentioned his interest in the sweet science after he dispatched of Dan Henderson at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" in March 2008. And there is perhaps no boxer who has accomplished more in the sport in the past decade and a half than Jones Jr., although he could be considered past his prime despite winning four of his last five bouts. Is Anderson getting too big for his britches? Or does he have the stuff to hang with the boxing legend?

yeh he would get beat by jones
he was being out boxed by franklin in there 2nd fight before he got him in the clinch
silva has a solid chin and could probably go the distance with jones but i think he would lose and jones would win decisively
that being said silva would absolutely destroy/KO/Submit jones in an mma fight

I think this is a dumb@ss idea! Theres no win for Anderson. If Anderson wins, so what Roy is a past his prime boxer! But if Anderson loses, then what does that say about him being the baddest man on the planet?

anderson has 5 fights left with the ufc what if he loses one of those? so what.

Agree…. is anyone else dissapointed in Anderson? He is on top of the world right now and makes money because of MMA and it’s fans…why not make the biggest fights possible in MMA and stop talking about boxing!!

Yes. Who cares if his pal Lyoto is about to rule the LHW division. That shouldn’t stop Silva from fighting any of the other top ten 205’ers… those are the fights the fans want to see, and if Anderson is serious about wanting to do everything he can while he’s still in his prime, he should want them too.

this is just stupid… its like saying shogun has a good chance at beating david beckham at a soccer game because he’s got good soccer kicks… boxing and mma are different disciplines and different sciences… a silva should stick to what hes the best at… mma

anyone who wants to see a comparison of what a jones-silva fight would look like youtube roy jones vs richard hall. hall is a taller southpaw with a record at the time of 24-0 with 23 ko’s and was the #1 contender in the world at the time.

you must not know what the word “comparison” means. silva is nowhere near the level hall was in that fight, and to compare ken shamrock(27-13) and roy jones jr(53-5) is the stupidest thing i have ever read on mania.
by sac165 on Mar 25, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I know what the word comparison means. But what does a roy Jones fight from ten years ago have to do with Silva maybe fighting roy jones 2 years from now. All I am saying is you could pull videos of Shamrock from ten years ago when he was still winning fights and say ’ Yeah this is what it would look like if he fights someone now." Silva may not be near the level hall was in that fight ten yrs ago, but Roy Jones isn’t near the level roy jones was in that fight. Just my opinion, and I respect yours. Its a big maybe anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. otherwise it would be a very boring day at work for me.

And Michael Jordan was unbelievable at Basketball but just average (at best) at baseball. Taking nothing away from Jordan…possibly the best ever but winning the world series, he is not. Some guys are just better at certain sports than others. Jones just happens to be a better boxer than Silva.

maybe the ufc should have let him fought jones already and he would not want to retire from mma, is he going to reitre just so he can fight jones is that why he was fighting so much to run through his contract?
by roy on Mar 25, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I disagree to let A Silva fight in boxing is risky. Lets say Sliva loses then boxing has a legitmate call to say their best is better than MMA’s best (but we all know when evening out the playing field that is not true). But lets also say he wins, now maybe he will want to pursue a career in boxing and the UFC now has to deal with only being able to book Silva maybe two times a year max along with Silva providing publicity to the boxing community. The UFC brass will not allow this to happen unless Silva retires.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 25, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
you arugment dosn’t make alot of sense to me, i can see very few people thinking that way.you got a silva in his first boxing match going against one of the best ever in his sport so what if silva lost, so what if people watch boxing, its pretty much to different set of fans it seems.and so what if silva wanted to box once in awhile, would retiring be better than watching him fight twice a year, he could still make them money or he can retire and make someone else money and them none.
by roy on Mar 25, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
No roy I think its you that don’t understand. Your looking at it from a fans perspective and thats understandable. But I’m saying this from Dana Whites or the UFCs perspective, the people who actually make the decision on this. I could care less if Silva boxed and never fought MMA again I would still watch all of his fights.

It wouldn’t be Silvas first pro fight… look him up on boxrec… he’s fought 2 times…. he’s 1-1… both against nobodies. Jones would eat Silva.

This guy Dana White is always saying how MMA is better than boxing. An also suggesting that boxers like Floyd Mayweather jr. are scared of MMA fighters. It looks like He does’nt want even MMA’s best fighters to fight boxers past there prime in an MMA fight or a Boxing fight. Hands down Roy Jones jr. wins in either bout because all he have to do is box. Anderson Silva clinches and knees are all if he could get his hands on Roy Jones jr, but look at the punches he would have to walk through. If he and MMA fighters are always calling out Floyd Mayweather jr. then why not let Silva fight Jones jr. Simple because he knows that he wouldn’t win. Just like Brock Lesnar couldn’t beat Klitschko (he’d get knock out) plain an simple or better yet Floyd Mayweather jr. vs. GSP in a boxing match (that would be ugly for GSP) MMA is sport that does’nt matter to the mainstream, it has a certain audience (most of them fight club maniacs) and does’nt want them to be disappointed when they lose.

Sac, have you seen jones fight in the past 4 years. he looks great bobbing and weavin against cans. His last decent win was Tarver back in 2003. About 5 and a half years ago. Jones could probably get the decision, but saying it wouldn’t even be competative may be a little much. I myself would rather watch them have a dance off.
by James S on Mar 25, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions
to be realistic jones probably wouldn’t knock silva out since he hasn’t knocked anyone out since he got knocked out but he would pot-shot him and dance around him making silva look stupid. to me if another fighter can make you look stupid for 12 rounds its not competative if he gets the ko or not
by sac165 on Mar 25, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Anderson Silva would be another “can” for Jones. Roy Jones could basically pick which round and by which method he disposes of Silva. I agree with sac, you’d just see Jones dance around totally making Silva look foolish. You’d even see a bolo punch from jones i reckon, the ultimate insult.
by attakdog on Mar 25, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
You guys may have a point. I think if Silva lands even a half thrown punch on Roy, Roy would fall. Even a full punch that is blocked might drop roy. The only problem is Roys best asset is his defense. I could easily see roy making him look foolish back in his prime, but nowadays…. he just isn’t a very impressive boxer anymore. Still one of the best ever though.
by James S on Mar 25, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Don’t you people get it??? Even a washed up Jones is a thousand times better than Anderson Silva! He’s a multiple time, multiple weight world champion who’s been boxing his entire life!!! Like Silva with next to no boxing experience could even lay a glove on him!!! Silva would get owned by any half decent amateur boxer!!! This is just insulting! It’s Roy Jones we’re talking about him boxing, not Muhamed Ali!
by attakdog on Mar 25, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Jones easily outclassed Trinidad about a year ago. Felix may be past his prime, but he is certainly no can.
Attakdog is right, in a boxing ring against one of the all-time P4P greats, SILVA is the can. Silva has never seen anyone even remotely close to Jones in terms of boxing skill. Jones’ hand speed and technique would make Silva look slow and clumsy. You guys obviously don’t understand the difference between high-level boxing and MMA striking.

not to mention he just won another belt over the weekend against a guy who took jeff lacy and calzaghe to a decision, 2 of the top boxers in the world and roy won every round and got the tko in the 5th

LMFAO!!!!!! Like Anderson Silva’s boxing record is remotely comparible to Jones. Just because i’ve scored a few baskets, doesn’t mean I can play in the NBA!Marcus Davis has pro boxing experience, would he beat Ricky Hatton? Would Alessio Sakara beat Bernard Hopkins?? These compariosons are just as proposterous!

I’m biased. Anderson is my favorite fighter. He is one of the best strikers in MMA. I figure he can hold his own. He would be the taller longer guy. I don’t think Anderson would take the fight if he didn’t intend to win. If it was Manny Pacquiao I would be more concerned.

He needs to move up in weight class and stay at 205. There will be no boredom for him there. He walks around at 225-230 anyway, so why not?
by Rick on Mar 25, 2009 12:33 PM EDT reply actions
He needs to move up in weight. Fighting at 205 will give him competition from every angle. He walks around at 225-230 anyway, so why not? I’m sure Forrest, Rampage, and Rashad would love to give him a run for his money. Anything can happen in MMA, why not let it happen?
by r-dub on Mar 25, 2009 12:36 PM EDT reply actions
Also, like r-dub says, since he claims to be so good, why not fight at 205?
by Capt. Doug on Mar 25, 2009 12:40 PM EDT reply actions
Thanks Capt. Im not saying Forrest and them will definitely beat him, but I think they pose more of a threat than Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen-dont get me wrong, they are great fighters respectively, but they just don’t compare to Anderson on any level. Moving up in weight creates more opportunities and, as I said, more competition. He destroyed James Irwin at 205, an no offense, James Irwin is no Rampage. I say give it a shot.

by Brandon on Mar 25, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not too sure of that, boxing is much different and the bobbing and weaving is important, the gloves do not get through the defense as easily as they do in MMA.. just how Anderson Silva moves is made for kickboxing/muay thai not boxing

Roy Jones is miles past his best but would still be able to beat Anderson Silva blindfolded. It’s insulting to believe because you’ve knocked out a few bums in MMA that you can challenge one of the finest pound for pound boxers of the last 100 years, washed up or not. Jones would wipe him out in a under a minute should he feel the need!

I agree with attak, Jones would kill him and i think that this comes off as a little bit insulting.
I’m sure Silva has spent many a hundred hours sparring with the big gloves on but chuck him in there with a veteran like Jones and he’ll get KTFO.

“…Jones would kill him and i think that this comes off as a little bit insulting.”
Nick, are you saying that Phil is being insulting because his opinion is that Silva would win “a great fight”? That seems less insulting than “jones would kill him”.
So many opponents of Jones have said that first time they get hit they were surprised how fast his hands were. That is exactly what some have said of the Spider. Given Jones’ mileage, I have to think that this would be a very good fight and fairly even. Turn back the clock and Roy would do what he did to everybody.
by PJJ on Mar 25, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Rubbish! The only way it would be competitive is if Roy Jones had one hand tied behind his back! Anderson Silva being the best striker in MMA counts for nothing in boxing! It’s like saying Raphael Nadal’s the best tennis player in the world, therefore he could beat Tiger Woods at golf. That comparison is equally as ludicrous!

Well gentlemen.. The truth be told.. I’m a HUGE Silva fan.. so I’m blinded and bias when it comes to this legendary warrior and human being.
This talk is intresting.. I don’t think Roy will " Kill ".. Silva in a boxing match.. me being bias..and my analytical side put together tells me that.
This is more like Jacare vs Couture in a grappling match.. Jacare the cream of la cream in the BJJ world.. Couture UFC Hall of Famer.. with very little BJJ in his arsenal. And these to fought to a draw.
I think Roy Jones Jr.. is on a very short list of a few boxers that can claim greatest of all time.. how Roy dominated his division 10yrs ago.. and pretty up and down every other division is a thing of legends.. and totally respect the man.. IMO he is the best boxer of this past generation.. Anderson Silva in the Now is the best striker in MMA today.. MMA right.. not Boxing.. 12 oz gloves not 4 oz.. MMA and Boxing as we have heard before is like apples and oranges.. but both are in the fruit basket.. Silva is a professional Athlete.. and will come into a boxing match with Roy Jones Jr.. as the cream of la cream of MMA..the sport’s reperesenter in the Boxing ring. I hope he wins.. I hope he can show the boxing world his legend as he shows us in the Octagon time and time again. I hope it would be a great boxing fight.. and I hope the boxing world and fans.. take a better look at MMA.. adn gives us out dues.. those that have not done so yet.

How much logic and reasoning do you use before coming to this conclusion? Doesn’t he at least get a punchers chance? attakdog : Do you know we are talking about Anderson Silva here right??
"Silva is considered to have one of the strongest minds in the sport. He is extremely calm and will even take naps in the locker rooms before his fights. Silva’s pinpoint accuracy, along with his aggressive and opportunistic fighting style have made him one of the most dominant and feared fighters in history "
You being a Mania Blogger/ I’m sure even if you have a license or how you handle yourself being the wheel.. and it would highly impossible for you to win a car race..against professional car racer’s.. however one of the most dominate UFC Champion’s EVER.. the most dangerous striker in MMA today.. considered by many.. doesn’t stand a chance against a boxing legend.. boxing is 1 third of MMA.. Anderson last time I checked.. doesn’t choose to take the fight to the ground.. he likes to strike more.. So Silva doesn’t stand a chance in a boxing fight against Roy Jones Jr huh?? It’s free country.. and you do have the right to have your opinion.. which I think is wrong.

PJJ… what i meant was that i think it is a bit insulting Silva calling him out like this, badly worded post i know.
I know Jones is up for it too but its just a bit “Yeah i know its a different sport but i’ll still take him”.
I am a big Silva fan and he is one of the most classy guys in the game but spin it round and say Rashad started calling out legends of boxing. I think it is a little disrespectfull is all.
In terms of the fight its self.
The punchers chance analogy doesn’t translate as well from mma to boxing. Bigger gloves, standing 8 counts, not as many ways to knock someone out etc mean it is a lot rarer for the flash knockout.
Silva is at his most dangerous using his muay thai knees and elbows, thats a hell of a lot missing from arsenal.
I see where your coming from with the Jacre vs Randy grappling match Phil but the difference is Randy just defended for its entirity. Silva hasn’t got that option because A) He would still lose in Boxing on the cards if he were to use Randys trick and B) 36 minutes of RJJ and he would more likely than not get knocked out anyway.
Roy Jones is still quick and still hits hard (ask Joe Calzaghe).
I think it takes a bias mma fan to give Silva anything more than an 1 in 10 chance.

Not even one in a thousand!!! It’s just delusional to believe a good MMA striker could beat a good boxer! Silva just wouldn’t stand a chance, NickJ is right, the punchers chance just doesn’t translate. Silva’s submitted a few guys, does that mean he could win the olympic judo title? he’s ko’d some guys with his kicks, that must mean he should be the next K1 gp champion then? Beating MMA guys with next to know boxing ability doesn’t mean you can beat world champions, that’s insuting to boxers the world over! He has no more chance of knocking out Roy Jones than I do!

This would be a good point for the UFC to take the initiative. Offer Silva a contract extension now that adds 2-3 fights to his current contract. In exchange, Silva gets to box RJjr after a match with GSP. After which Silva could come back to the middleweight division and defend his title or move up and make a run at 205.
This would be an easy sell for the UFC. They get to lock in a p4p champ, win or lose get huge exposure with a boxing match, and keep a fighter in his prime from retiring. This would be good for Silva because he gets to fulfill his dream sooner rather then later. Given the UFC’s champion’s clause it could be a long time before the boxing match ever happens.

How many fight does he have left on his contract like 3???? Does any one know?
by Jay on Mar 25, 2009 1:08 PM EDT reply actions
I think like 5, so it’s gonna be a while before he can persue this; Dana White could slow him way down, give him 1, or two fights a year and milk it.

OOpps to many swears…here is a clean comment:
As much as id like to see an MMA guy beat a boxer at their own game as final validation to all the boxing die hards that MMA is just as skillful, I think this is a bad idea. What if Silva loses? All the boxing morons will think they have MMA’s number. And this may respark the whole stupid boxing v mma thing, which I for one, am really bored of.
Anyho, naturally, I prefer MMA, and it would suck to see arguebly our best guy ever take a loss against an old past it boxing legend.
Please please dont Anderson. And if you do, train your ar$e off and dont turn up with any of that Cote rubbish.
by UK_Chris on Mar 25, 2009 1:44 PM EDT reply actions
I am not overly concerned with one of the best leaving the game early. I think, if anything, Silva would announce his retirement to get this boxing match. He would be contractually obligated
by PJJ on Mar 25, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions
unless retired. He can potentially “retire”, have his match with Jones, and then come out of retirement. How many times have we seen this reversal done already anyway.
by PJJ on Mar 25, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions
How about this: Dana pays RJjr mad money to come in and spar with Silva.
by A Lynch on Mar 25, 2009 1:59 PM EDT reply actions
Roy would humiliate Silva in boxing.
This is all just contract posturing anyway.
Dana will up the anti for Silva.

Boxing is very boring too bad Roy Jones JR is too much of a pussy to fight in the cage MMA. He couldnt beat the worst UFC because he would cry as soon as someone takes him down and beats the crap out of him.
by Cory on Mar 25, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions
Yes true, hence he hasn’t challenged anyone “in the cage”. He knows it would be deluded of him to try. Pity Anderson Silva doesn’t think the same way!
by attakdog on Mar 25, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, that and the fact he earns ten times more boxing.

Tim Sylvia couldn’t get sanctioned to box because he was an MMA fighter. Anderson should get try getting sanctioned first before biting off his feeding hand.

Why make thousands in MMA if he can make millions in Boxing… I wanna see him fight in MMA but maybe is that better fot him, if he get his ass kicked well punched, then he’ll return…

i guess only silva and his camp knows how well he does when he spars with boxers. but i predict him getting a big payday to get carried a couple rounds then have his jaw broken. not exactly good for mma, washed up rjj killing a prime anderson.

In My opinion only guys that have a chansce to beat The Spider.
1) SUGAR 205
2) GSP 170
3) Machida 205
4) Rampage 205
5) COTE 185 Rematch
by Cory on Mar 25, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions
1) Superman
2) The Incredible Hulk
3) The Mighty Thor (outside chance)
This is the list if you read half the Anderson Silva nuthuggers on here!
by attakdog on Mar 25, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I second attakdog’s comments…a rematch with COTE?? WTF?
by RedDog on Mar 25, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
the bottom line is Silva has not fought the best guys in either division!!!!
Here’s three that would beat him!!
185lbs- Damian Maia. Gegard Mousari
205lbs- Louis Cane. Lyoto Machida
170lbs or catch wt. GSP.
SHit.. Travis run out of gas Lutter took him down at will!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK MAIA WOULD DO TO HIM WHEN IT GO’S TO THE GROUND!! SUBMISSION IS THE WORD. WIN MAIA
Dana White… Its time for him to start fighting the BEST!!! before he go’s off to lose to an over the hill ex boxing camp!!

I don’t know, the Hulk’s stand-up is pretty shaky. And I’m not convinced he’d pass a drug test. Thor would get TKO’d unless the Nevada State Athletic Commision allowed his to bring his warhammer Mjolnir into the octagon. As for Superman, of course Superman would win.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 25, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions
Good point about the Hulk! The hammer issue’s why Thor was only considered an outside chance!

Great news! Hopefully, it won’t get pulled off by Dana in the last moment. Squaring off against someone like Roy Jones jr. will really put Anderson’s boxing skills to the test. PS: with that out of the way, I’m putting my mony on Jones :D

185lbs- damian maia, gegard mousasi
205lbs- lyoto machida, luis cane(would crush him)
170 or catch wt. gsp??
all would beat silva.
Hell… travis run out of gas lutter took him down easy!!
what do you think would happen when maia takes him down… submission win maia!
dana white!!! before he runs off and gets beat by an over the hill ex boxing champ.. for the bucks!!
put him in against the BEST!

I just want too see the spider take on george st pierre! That would be such a back and forth battle. And if the spider leaves to do boxing bullcrap then its a slap in the face to all us mma fans. We want too see the best possible fights and we blog it out like little kids with a new toy. This is truly a let down to all us.
by kelly on Mar 25, 2009 10:01 PM EDT reply actions
As a fan I’d like to see that fight, but for GSP’s sake I hope it doesn’t happen. Silva is too big and Georges will get destroyed. Think Penn vs St.Pierre v2.0.
by Jeremyjackson on Mar 25, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions
thats very selfish of you..the dude is a PROFESSIONAL fighter..he’s career is short and he needs to make money to support his family—he wont go up the corporate ladder you know..and boxing is where the money is in combat sports…Silva’s probably thinking “its recession time…the owners of the UFC is loosing its main money maker station casinos…ill be safer and make more money in boxing”1 fight with Roy jones would be equivalent to 10 fights in the octagon(which would span what?3 years)
by dana on Mar 25, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions
Hate this idea. Seems like such a money move, and while he deserves it he doesn’t have a chance to me!

Analyze this man. By the time Anderson Silva retires from MMA, Roy Jones would be 44 or 45 years old! I wonder if he can still box at that age or if he will even be allowed to box at that age. And the Athletic Commissions would not be dumb enough to sanction a 45 year old man versus a man with a 1-1 boxing record. This is simply a press release that will never happen. And who will watch this? Count me in among those who will not even watch it even if it is free. This will prove nothing.

For those of you who say it’s a no-win situation for Silva I think that you’re missing the point. Figure a pay-day in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 million for Anderson if he takes the fight. He would have to take about ten UFC bouts to pull in that kind of money.
Silva is a great fighter, anyone who questions that is, in the opinion of most MMA insiders, is not seeing the genius but he knows that fighting is a business. What better way to maximize your earning potential than by crossing over and headlining the first ever extravaganza featuring legends from both sports?

Anyone that actually thinks that Anderson Silva can go the distance let alone win against Jones, is pretty much out of there minds.. past his prime? yes. but this is a boxing match, and seeings how Silva wins stand up with his clinch, knees and kicks, his hand speed and strength is just no match for Jones, No matter how good of a chin you may think Anderson has. Im going to predict a 4th to 5th round KO by Jones.. This is a guy that would go straight from the basketball court to the boxing ring and win decisively over trained boxers.. Yall Must Of Forgot, when he beat Bernard Hopkins and won the IBF the Right was hurt, Beat him with the Left.. pay day is all Anderson will walk away with from this fight, and maybe a broken face…
by Matt Fisto on Jun 26, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions
The other news is that Roy Jones is considering fighting Silva under MMA rules in the octagon. As mentioned before…these are two completely different sports. Jones would get demolished in an MMA bout where he has no experience in BJJ or Muay Thai. Dana White has already shot this one down also. As of July 29th, Silva stated that the contracts have been signed to have a boxing fight when his UFC career ends. All of this babble and speculation will come to an end after Silva’s last three fights are up!
by Fireplug on Aug 4, 2009 10:21 PM EDT reply actions
“After my contract with the UFC ends and end my career in MMA”…..ummm, by then I’m pretty sure Jones will be waaaayyyy too old to fight anyone.
by Eddy g on Aug 9, 2009 10:47 PM EDT reply actions
Dont write this off to quickly, Silva has some epic boxing skills. I think that Jones will have his hands full for the first few rounds. If he can make it past that then he has a great chance of beating Silva. Silva has never been in a long bout let alone anything like the so called “Champion” rounds in boxing. Jones has been there many times.
My prediction, as long as Jones is smart and keeps him working but stays on the defensive for the first few rounds and can stay away from Silva’s nasty left hook. The Jones will win the bout in the later rounds. I doubt a knockout will happen though….just my 2 cents.

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned that Roy Jones Jr. has faster strikes with 14oz. gloves than Anderson does with 4oz. gloves. Watch some highlights…RJJ is lightning fast with boxing gloves on, and anyone who’s trained with both boxing and mma gloves knows that it’s a big difference. Even out of his prime RJJ would still have much quicker punches than Anderson. RJJ is also much stronger than Anderson. Anderson is 1-1 against no names. To say this would be a close fight is the ultimate submission to mental retardation, or lack of knowledge.
by Jason on Sep 25, 2009 5:41 PM EDT reply actions
OK. Let’s start with Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer. 10 seconds!
Anderson Silva is suppose to be 1-1 in boxing.
How the hell is he going to beat Roy Jones?
It’s a money fight, nothing more.
If Silva and team want to do it the right way, and if they are confident in his boxing skills, the give him 1 or two “tune ups” against “tomatoe cans”. Then, let Anderson prove himself before fighting Jones. Let him fight somebody like Glen Johnson who will really test Silva’s skills.
If, I repaet IF Anderson beats Johnson, then we have the makings of a really marketable fight in Silva vs. Jones.
As some have said great MMA striking skills noramaly equal to, at best, “fair” boxing skills.
Lets go back to the 80’s when Don “the dragon” Wilson a great kick boxer decided to test his skills in boxing.
His managers brought him to Atlantic City to fight a freind of mine Willie Fleming who’s boxing record was 3-10-1, 2 ko’s.
Willie had lost his last 4 fights.
They figured losing record a guy who’s 40. Easy debue for Wilson.
Well, they failed to understand that Willie boxed his entire life and was one tough dude.
Wilson was “humbled” immediately by an overhand right that buckled him, and he immediately tried to throw a kick which Willie avoided and then droped a right hand-left hook that KO’D the dragon. So much for his boxing career.
And guys, I am a Martial Artist first, not a boxer although I have many friends in the sport.
It is stupid to believe that an aging boxer can be defeated by an MMA fighter in his prime.
I would bet that if Jones had some months of wrestling,BJJ, and “ground and pound” he might be able to beat Silva in a MMA bout more so than Silva beating Jones in boxing.
This “what art/sport is better” question has been around for ages.
Bottom line, if the best in MMA had the ability, they would have boxings top managers and promoters knocking on their door to sign them on.
While there may be MMA guys with decent skills in the striking department, I seriously doubt than even today’s best could be ranked in the top 15-20 in any weight division in boxing.
The sports can co exist and there should be mutual respect.
Without a doubt, one thing that even some amateur MMA fighters have over their boxing counterparts is the conditioning aspect and work ethetic. 9 out of 10 times they are in better overall condition than boxers.
Just my 10 cents!

I think it would be more competitive than everyone thinks…. A. Silva was a pro boxer in Brazil and only gave it up after 2 fights b/c the UFC offered him a ton of money… Silva probably loses, but I don’t think as bad as everyone makes it out to be….
