UFC 98: Matt Serra still doesn't like Matt Hughes

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"The thing is this, this sport you deal with a lot of guys in this sport and most of them are cool. It’s a rarity you find an a--hole and I found one. I’m going to get paid to punch him in the mouth. I’m going to do to him what you should do to every bully and that’s not only in America but everywhere in the world. What should you do to a bully? You should punch him square in the mouth. I’m getting paid for it. So who’s got it better than me? I want to know.... I’m not an idiot. I’ll tell you I don’t like the guy because I don’t like the guy. But as a fighter I know the problems he brings to the table and I know what I got to watch out for. I know where he’s really dangerous. What do you want me to say? He’s a swell guy and I can’t wait to fight him? F--- him."

Surprise! The animosity between former champions Matt Serra and Matt Hughes is alive and well. The pair have been feuding endlessly since their stints as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 6 back in 2007. Fast forward to UFC 98 on May 23 -- the scheduled date that Serra and Hughes are expected to finally meet inside the Octagon to settle their epic grudge match -- and we're 17 months removed from the initial fireworks. That's a long time.

you have to love matt serra funny mother f—-er

by tay on Mar 24, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

I think both of them have attitude that needs adjusting… Hughes more than Serra so I would love to see Serra pull off a triangle or armbar, or just plainly pound Hughes into oblivion.

by DJ on Mar 24, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

yep Serra is funny and a laid back kinda guy, Hughes on the other hand is an a$$ and thinks he’s funny but he’s not..

by RoB on Mar 24, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Serra is a MMA Cinderella Man. I don’t see Serra having a bad atitude with anyone but Hughes and who can blame him. I don’t think I could be in the same room with Hughes without trying to hurt him.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 24, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Serra is a total piece of shiat. I know Hughes is a bit of a prick but Serra is just ridiculous. I’m happy he isn’t talking about what a stand up guy he is and how maybe him and GSP can grab a cup of tea or something. Serra is a nobody who luckily beat GSP. Why not try to remain relavant tho by creating a fued with Hughes, makes sense. I can’t wait for Serra to get punched in the mouth while he’s stuck on his back. Who will Serra fight after Hughes? I’m guessing nobody cares who he fights because he’s not a relavant fighter. And why do all of Serras picture have him looking super lubed up? Man I can’t stand that guy.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 25, 2009 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Cogito what are you talking about? maybe you should go back and take a look at the whole situation.. I’m guessing you are the “piece of sh*t” here cause u my friend are way wrong once again.. Serra is a nice guy. Hughes is an a-hole that likes to make fun of ppl and that is why Serra has a problem with him

by RoB on Mar 25, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

HA! Serra isn’t a nice guy.

by Synyster on Mar 25, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Cogito/Synster,

Honest Question: How is Serra a dick? He seemed nice to his team on TUF. I’ve only ever heard him badmouth Hughes. I’m not on the guys nuts, but I can’t see what he’s done wrong other than be short and ugly.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 25, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Rob don’t call me a piece of sh*t and then call me your friend, in the same sentance none the less. Overies puncher my point is Serra is always claiming to be a stand up swell guy but yet he is talking all this trash about Hughes because he’s a prick. Well lets face it there are tons of fighters in the UFC let alone MMA who are very egotistical and going to be very rude people. The fact of the matter is that Serra hated Hughes before anything even really happened, its my impression that he was hoping he could line up a fight against Hughes because he didn’t think he would beat GSP for the title. (please note that I know that Serra hated Hughes for beating Royce) Anway most stand up swell guys don’t try to compare themselves to other people like Serra does, they are considered stand up because they act the part and they don’t start talking needless trash. I’m not denying that Hughes can be a prick but I am saying that Serra is a bigger prick for pretending like he isn’t one.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 25, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I just quoted you calling Serra a piece of … Serra isn’t always claiming to be a standup guy, he is infact a pretty good guy who just likes to joke around, and why he has a problem with Hughes is because Hughes is very dislikable the guy is annoying as hell and is just simply a donk even though he’s not aware of it himself..

by RoB on Mar 25, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah Hughes has a pretty big grudge against anyone who beats him, no suprise there. And his opinions are usually strongly biased based on that fact but he’s a stand up guy who puts in a lot of work for his community, cares about his fans, and does a ton to help out the UFC. Before you start claiming who here is a good guy can you tell me what Serra has done? Exactly you just don’t like Hughes because he doesn’t like other fighters. What should he do pull a GSP and repeat the same dead lines everytime? Should he act like Serra and claim to be better than he really is? I mean dang man your so strongly biased against Hughes its not even funny. There is plenty of evidence that Hughes is a stand up guy, his opinions are just whack a good amount of the time but thats just him feeling that emptiness from losing his belt after being considered the greatest welterweight of all time. Heck I’d be better and never forgive GSP, I wouldn’t want to have a beer with the guy, I’d want to punch him in the face everytime I saw him. Take my belt back and be like what now!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 25, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Who gives a F*** who the nice guy and who’s not, Matt Hughes is going to beat the f*** out of Serra!TKO 1st round!

by Mike on Mar 25, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not in any way saying that what Hughes has done for MMA and all the work he’s put in isn’t good cause it is.. but he’s still an a$$ as a person..

by RoB on Mar 25, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

and i’m not talking about how good they are as fighters, cause Hughes has clearly had a much more succesful career as a fighter and should probably be considered the favorite in this fight even though i personally think Serra will beat him just cause Hughes has gotten too old..

by RoB on Mar 25, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

But Matt Serra does look like an orc from Lord of the Rings int that picture.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 24, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

THIS JUST IN- MATT SERRA DOES NOT LIKE MATT HUGHES. FILM AT ELEVEN. OF ONE OF THEM PULLING OUT EARLY DUE TO INJURY.

by Sirchokemout on Mar 24, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Serra is not a top tier mma competitor, he will most likely get man handled by a stronger Matt Hughes. Unfortunately Serra wishes he had a career like Matt Hughes’s, but all in all he is just a fuc*in JOBBER.

by Killjoy66 on Mar 25, 2009 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Woot I realy hope Serra wins !

by Laughey on Mar 24, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

It is rare to find a dick in MMA, this fight has two of them. IMO. Hopefully a double KO.

by jay on Mar 24, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I dislike both of the really, but Hughes is more likely to win this fight. He should take it in the 2nd round TKO.

by c-war on Mar 24, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I HATE Serra. Matt Hughes is the guy who got me into MMA, so I’m 120% on his side. Serra has nothing in this. I said this in the Shields/Lawler thread, but Matt Hughes beat Trigg the first time without even throwing a punch. It was a while ago, but still. If a guy who still fights like he did then, in the sense that he pwns the ground game and sucks standing up, to beat a guy without throwing 1 punch is pretty impressive.

Matt Serra has no place in the Octagon against any top fighter. Matt Hughes will dominate this tool.

War Hughes.

by Synyster on Mar 24, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

shogun subbed kevin randleman without throwing a punch

by brendan on Mar 24, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve never seen that fight… But damn. I’m impressed.

by Synyster on Mar 24, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

If anything this fight will go exactly like Serra’s fight with Karo. Hughes might get angry in the beginning and want to punch Serra, but Serra might catch him once, and Hughes will recover and beat the snot out of him on the ground for the next 12 minutes of the fight.

by Synyster on Mar 24, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Serra vs Hughes. Man this is a tough one to pick! I mean I feel that Hughes will most likely win, however I don’t know who I WANT to win this. They are both pricks.

Serra is hard to like. He has a cocky, annoying personality and he’s too mouthy for his own good.

Hughes on the other hand I always liked because of his achievements in the sport and his quiet demeanor. But after reading his book, I found out that he is a true a—hole. This guy and his equally f—cked up bro, terrorized their parents with violence, used to torture animals and do other psycho sh-t and now they are good guys because they found God? What a bunch of f-cking hippocrits!

The best outcome? They both beat each other senseless for 14min,59seconds, then in the last second there is a double knockout! :)

by Caknakker on Mar 24, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a fan of Hughes, and there’s plenty of stuff to bag on Hughes about. I read the book as well, he was casterating farm animals (i think pigs? can’t remember), I guess it’s a farm thing, that’s not exactly torturing animals for pleasure. I can’t remember the whole book and have no interest in digging it up, but I don’t think he was exactly beating up his parents, I think it came down to and incident mostly and his brother did something physical to his dad I think. It’s been like 2 yrs since I quickly read it and found a lot of stuff to be misinformation by Hughes-Haters. I’m a Hughes-Hater, but I think there’s a certain objective to take from the book to accurately portray him as an A-hole VS a complete Psychopath.

by DAVE A on Mar 25, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I want Hughes to win simply because it makes GSP’s 2 victories over him more significant and make’s Serra’s win over GSP look like more of a fluke.

by Gankaho on Mar 25, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, it wasn’t much of a fluke. It’s not like GSP tripped and fell face first into an uppercut.

by Space on Mar 25, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Bingo.

by Shadyone33 on Mar 24, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what I’ve been saying ever since I heard about this fight!! I can’t stand hughes or serra and a double ko is the only solution!!

by Dragon on Mar 25, 2009 7:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Serra will never even come close to establishing himself like Hughes! Serra seems to have some sort of sick crush on Hughes. Where will Serra’s name be in the UFC’s history book? If Hughes is a little cocky, he earned his right to be IMO.

by JV on Mar 24, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Serra will be in the history book’s for winning the biggest fluke ever.Hughes is going to crush Serra like a bug.

by Del Boy on Mar 24, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats what im hoping for Del Boy! Serra has been very vocal about Hughes. He better back up all the sh*t hes talked.

by JV on Mar 24, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, he will. Serra by TKO in the first. Garuntee Hughes hardly even trains anymore considering hes either being a ref at some amateur event or just doing Q&A. WAR SERRA

by BrutalKnockout. on Mar 24, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

ill take hughes hes still a good fighter its just he lost to the divisions best

WAR HUGHES

by Jared on Mar 24, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

BrutalKO- how is reffing an amateur event and doing a Q&A result in not training? What a dumb post. To add to that, you also pick Serra to win, by TKO nonetheless. At least you’re consistent.

by Synyster on Mar 24, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha. Agree with Synyster. Hughes wins, and goes onto the hall of fame. Serra may want to cut to 155, but to be honest I think he loses to the top level guys there too.

by naturalshadow on Mar 25, 2009 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t either!

by kevin on Mar 24, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

It’ll be nice to see this get settled. I hope Serra wins and drops down to LW, but I’ll take Hughes by RNC in the 2nd.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

Hughes choke out Serra?? I think you are confused.

by Crowls on Mar 24, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Didnt he choke out Royce?

by c-war on Mar 24, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

No, he gnp’d him. He choked out Trigg. My prediction stands.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough. I like a bold pick. I don’t see this one happenin tho.

by Crowls on Mar 24, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, for some reason I see Serra gassing out and getting beat up on the ground ’till he rolls over and gives up his back, thus allowing Hughes to sink in the choke. Probably not going to happen but that was my initial thought of how it will end.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

just based on the fact serra hasn’t been submitted and bj and gsp didn’t sub him i gotta think it’s a long shot

by Crowls on Mar 24, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP was too busy kicking the crap out of him to bother subbing him. Serra hasn’t subbed anyone in years.

by naturalshadow on Mar 25, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Serra will NEVER again fight at 155 lbs. He was asked about that in a recent interview and replied that he is just too big, and he will never again be able to cut down to lightweight.

Nothing would make me happier than seeing SErra punch a hole through the “smug chipmunks” face!

by john on Mar 25, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

You can always count on serra for a good soundbyte, straight to the point

by Irish on Mar 24, 2009 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

by DSmith on Mar 24, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Who cares the both suck now.

by fnuts on Mar 24, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Not a huge serra fan but I love when guys dislkike eachother and hype to a fight, still am looking forward to it, I’m kinda more a hughes fan if anything but its perfect time for serra to beat him if ever.
If serra wins where does he stand in ufc??

by phenomenal angel on Mar 24, 2009 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

On a booster seat.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Serra seems to have a small man complex. I dont get why hes saying Hughes is a bully now?

by JV on Mar 24, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

jV: have u been living under a rock? u r on this site everyday of your life, and you dont know why they call Hughes a bully? WOW!

by john on Mar 25, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Serra will win a UD.

by BeerMan on Mar 24, 2009 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

no way…im not saying serra cant win but if the fights goes to a decision it is going to be matt hughes coming out on top for controlling the fight from top posistion.

by matt on Mar 24, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

i love seeing hughes getting the beats, last couple of fights he’s been crushed and im going with serra for the win, this is going to be a wicked card with one hell of a main event. Not a machida fan yet but i think he will beat rashad then rampage.

by markg on Mar 24, 2009 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

you mean 7 months removed and not 17 .. right mania? yeah it should be a fun show.

by commoner on Mar 24, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

This fight was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 79. So yeah, 17 months sounds about right.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

both are dicks but Serra’s a bigger dick. Matt hasn’t said anything to him in a while and Serra still yappin his mouth about him seems like Serra’s the real bully. i hope Matt pound his mouth shut like he did to bj penn.

by Texican on Mar 24, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

I hope they fight the way they both talk shit. if they do its gonna be an exciting fight. but all I got to say is fuck both of em.

by TRIKZ on Mar 24, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t care how long it has been. I want to see these two kick the shit out of each other!!! I hate both of them but I think Serra will KO Hughes. His stand up is better. if it stays on the ground it will definately go to a decision.

by BadNutz on Mar 24, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

thanks Jeremy .. I misunderstood the last line.

by commoner on Mar 24, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

I dont like Matt Hughes mainly for what he said about Canada a few years back. I do however notice his skill and he is a great fighter. Matt Serra is also a talented fighter, although his voice can be annoying when he is in your corner, I guess the fact that he is so annoying means you wont miss his instruction which can be a good thing. I wonder if anyone he corners wishes they couldnt hear him or trys to drown him out? Anyways even though Serra is the better striker on the technical side I will say either Serra by submission or Hughes by TKO (via ground and pound), not matter what the outcome if Serra wins he should drop to the lightweight division he no longer has any business fighting at welterweight, in that case Hughes should maybe think of retirement. If Hughes wins then he should start thinking about a comeback but should not even think about moving up in weight, too small for middle weight.

by Tyson Harris on Mar 24, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

What did he say about Canada?

by Synyster on Mar 24, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

If Serra keeps it standing up, he can win. If he can’t, Hughes wins.

by DAMN! on Mar 24, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

shit if i was either of them i wouldnt be excited at all …theyve had to wait how long to fight each other???im sure serra is gunna be overweight he looks like a ligh heavyweight know hes a fat now…

by Zack Skokan on Mar 24, 2009 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

Serra must win this fight or he will fall far out of the top 10 rankings.
Should Serra win this fight, expect an immediate rematch with GSP.
The UFC could not afford to let Serra fight another contender after defeating Hughes. If he then lost, (or loses to Hughes)a rematch would be a longshot as serra would probably have to count on a GSP loss, coupled with a winning streak of his own.
It will be a natual rubber match. It just makes sense.
BTW I predicted here that Forrest would get his shot & also that Rashad would get his stab at the 205 title & got ridiculed. soooo…

by talkman on Mar 24, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

There is absolutely no way Serra gets a rematch if he wins this. He hasn’t fought in a year, since losing the title.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

“fall far out of the top ten rankings”

WTF???

he not even anywhere close to top 10, IMO.

by SoCalStunNa on Mar 24, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Serra is Wamma # 7 Welterweight.

by talkman on Mar 24, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Check last week’s MMA live for all Wamma rankings.

by talkman on Mar 24, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That ranking is based on the fact he was the champ before his last fight, but everyone knows his victory over GSP was a fluke and that the title shot he got was a joke too. He got a title shot for beating Shonie Carter… he didn’t even beat Lytle IMO. Serra’s days at WW should be over after this fight, win or lose.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with you JJ

by Lester the Pimp on Mar 25, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Serra CANT make 155 lbs anymore! He already made that clear!

by john on Mar 25, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

He CAN, john, but maybe he WON’T. His frame is ideal for 155, he’s just too pudgy and going a little hard on the Fettucini Alfredo these days.

im fucking excited for this event

Hughes doesn’t do anything with dignity.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 24, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

true that Jermey! Hughes just sucks at being a human being!

by john on Mar 25, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

The 17 month delay really took a lot of steam out of my enthusiasm for this fight. My head tells me that Serra is getting fed to the lions, but that is what I said before Serra vs. GSP I.

By the way, I lost a lot of respect for Hughs when he did his Bible Beating on TUF.

by Nate on Mar 24, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

Serra is the man- He fights because he wants to, not because he has to. His academy keeps good monetary wise which most fighters can’t do. Serra will show up as a Serra, great jiu jitsu, decent striker- it depends on what Hughes shows up to who wins this fight. Hughes talks shit about the Catholic Church so no way I root for that prick. Serra by armbar, rd. 2.

Good for Serra LOL. I do appreciate Hughes as 1 of the best WWs ever but as a guy he’s too cocky and arrogant for me. Not in a good way either.

by MrAngry on Mar 25, 2009 5:38 AM EDT reply actions

They both have been passed by. Serra is understandable. His best move would have been to retire after knocking out GSP and becoming a ringside commentator. However, Hughes went from a freakishly strong, dominating powerhouse to a whipping boy in no time. I still wonder how his downfall happened so fast. ???

by TJ on Mar 25, 2009 5:58 AM EDT reply actions

He lost to GSP and a huge Alves. Not much shame in that.

by naturalshadow on Mar 25, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope Hughes kicks his ass, Serra has been talking non-stop shit about Hughes for the best part of two years now. Apparently the animosity began after Matt dominated his idol Royce Gracie. Poor Serra. His voice goes through me and I hope he gets shut up good and proper

by Gooner Mark on Mar 25, 2009 6:12 AM EDT reply actions

hey dragon u said u were bout a hr and a half south of stl. where at im in farmington im def going to the strikforce fight in stl

by DBG on Mar 25, 2009 7:29 AM EDT reply actions

This fight is easy to call if Matt really trains for it. He will get the take down and gnp him for 3 rounds. He will more than likely win a ud with a slight chance of a tko due to gnp. If Matt doesn’t really train 100% then he prob. won’t be able to get the take downs in which he will become vulnerable to Serra’s stand-up.

by brac on Mar 25, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and predict that Matt will win this fight.

by talkman on Mar 25, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

I’m pretty sure hughes wins this fight by unanimous decision snoze style. Both guys are annoying and by definition isn’t a trash talker a bully? Both are trash talkers.

by nathan on Mar 25, 2009 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Serra cracks me up. He’s as witty as they come when it comes to trash talking. Who cares about them two fighting just put them in the octagon and let them trash talk eachother till the first one starts crying!
