New Jersey State Athletic Control Board refuses to sanction Tim Sylvia's boxing debut against Ray Mercer on May 30

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm with the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia will not be allowed to make his boxing debut against former Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer after the NJSACB has refused to sanction their main event fight scheduled for Adrenaline III at the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. on May 30.

"The Maine-iac" had agreed to box Mercer — barely one month after "Merciless" turns 48 years of age — not long after calling out Ken Shamroid last December. Sylvia has been on the shelf since getting steamrolled by Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction "Banned" last July and was not expected to fight an MMA match until a planned third event this summer.

From Sylvia:

I didn’t have an MMA fight until July in the Affliction 3 (show), and we really wanted to fight before then. This opportunity came about – and I’ve always wanted to try boxing at a pro level – so we decided to take it and see what happens. I’m jumping in the deep end. I never have (done things half way). Look at the heavyweight (MMA) division; I’ve fought about seven of the Top 10. So I might as well jump right in there and fight a guy that’s ranked in the Top 20 in the world."

Mercer's last bout was a majority decision win (boxing) over Richel Hersisiar last September in Nojesfabriken, Karlstad, Sweden, but is probably best known in the MMA world for getting choked out in an exhibition bout with Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in July 2007.

It will be interesting to see if there is an attempt to reschedule Sylvia's boxing debut for a state with a more lenient sanctioning body.

Regardless, it's still more than two months until the Adrenaline III card -- which is plenty of time to find a suitable heavyweight to replace Mercer if Sylvia remains in the main event under MMA rules.

I hear Jason Guida is available.

Good for the NJAC for veto’ing this poor excuse for a fight!
Tim has officially become the joke of mma! What a klown!

Tim will be fighting Paul Buentello at Affliction 3. If he really wanted to get another fight before July, then his manager could have sent him over to dREAM, to at least fight a decent mma fighter, instead of a boxing has been.

For example: DReam could have booked:
Sylvia vs. Sergei
Sylvia vs. Overeem

To bad Sylvia, doesnt want to fight anyone worth a damn anymore! What a JOKE!

Was there any stated reasoning?

by ARodOfIron on Mar 24, 2009 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Well apparently since Mercer couldn’t get approval, Tim is requesting to fight one of the following:

- Julio Chavez
- George Foreman
- Sonny Liston
- Marvin Hagler
***mainly because he wants to fight someone in the list of Top 20 boxers…..

Hey Tim, Lyoto asked “How my Pee Pee Pee taste”?

by B.J Pennzoil on Mar 24, 2009 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

George Foreman would KO him even now.

Then he’d get on the mic and say “I Cooked his clock like my grill cooks chicken, buy a george foreman grill!”

then his army of georges and georgeettes would carry sylvia away like a herd of ants.

That Sylvia pic always cracks me up. He looks IDENTICAL to the Metallica EP… ’Jump in the Fire". You know the short album with the beast and yellow cover.

Just go and look at ALL Metallica album covers…..YOU CANT mioss it. You’ll laugh your ass off. It will be IMMEDIATELY obvious.

Tim Sylvia called out Ken Shamrock 45 years old.

Tim Sylvia was supposed to fight Ray Mercer 48 years old.

What’s next ? Tim Sylvia calling out Dan Severn ? (50)

P.S. Dan Severn last fight was 1/24/2009

by Daddy Lupo on Mar 25, 2009 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

by Beast300 on Mar 25, 2009 3:25 AM EDT reply actions

Sylia’s already gotten his ass beat in a bar fight recently. He wants to remain in the limelight so bad he’ll do anything. He’s looking like a complete fool.

Message to Tim: DUDE, SAVE YOUR DIGNITY.

by ruan-fiy on Mar 25, 2009 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

would be good to see him fight rahman, first in boxing, then in mma.

by Insain on Mar 25, 2009 9:32 AM EDT reply actions

I guess Silvia doesn’t consider getting his face smashed in at a bar by a WWE wrestler good enough fight training.

by Ginas Cameltoe on Mar 25, 2009 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

Jesse, that pic is one of the funniest I’ve seen on this site.
