Silva seems to be a really strong guy, but Franklin is a stud and he will not be able to match Franklin’s strength. I would say that Franklin is one of the stronger guys pound for pound in the UFC. I say this because I saw the UFC All Access show before his fight with Louiseau.

NO big deal! Wanderlei has fought many stronger guys that franklin. NO 200 lb man has more wins over top Heavyweights that outweighed him by a ton. Wanderlei is used to being at a physical disadvantage…he makes up for it with Controlled Aggression! Should be an amazing fight and I dont think strength will play a role in this one!
Great news:
KJ noons lost a unanimous decision in his return to boxing!

Yep, John is spot on; Wanderlei has more KO power as well; and he’s just one tough bastard. No one will ever outwork him in the gym; I won’t be surprised if Franklin can’t keep up with the pace, he was lookin pretty tired in the 3rd rd of the Hendo fight. Aside from Wandi’s fight with Chuck he hasn’t gone 3 rds again; so his cardio hasn’t had the chance to play a factor in a fight. I can’t wait for this fight; but its so far off I’m already getting impatient. Good news on Noons, now he can come back to MMA and catch a beat down.

Machida has just revealed one of his training secrets for the 1st time: Urine therapy!
Once in the day, he and his family drinks their own urine. "My father does that for a long time and bring it to us. People think it’s a joke (laughs). I never said it in the United States because I don’t know how the fans will react (laughs). I drink my urine every morning like a natural medicine

Lol, there’s no way that can be true.. can that be true?? Please tell me thats not true John..

Yes…goggle it on-line there is a whole alternative med movement about it….I know someone that says they put their urine in their eyes for a month and now they don’t need their reading glasses…I figure it must be coming out of my body for reason!

I don’t care how beneficial that is.. I’m never drinking my own piss… I’d barf right off the bat; the thought of this alone is makin me gag. Ahk, i’m off to another thread.

Let’s hope Machida doesn’t go the way of Luke Cummo. Eric, keep your ingredient list on the protein shakes to yourself, please.
As far as Noons goes, he has another boxing match scheduled April 18th against Matt Vanda in Mpls, MN. He’s not done with boxing yet.

“I figure it must be coming out my body for a reason”…
I’m fairly sure the reason isnt to fix your vision… the reason is that urine is waste. This stuff is total bullsh*t.

I wonder if these guys ever go heavy. I get that it’s not the best for MMA because you need muscle endurance, but power has it’s place too. I would think they would go heavy sometimes, but I never see it.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 23, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions
I know what you mean. My best heavy day is 280 lbs for 3 sets of 6 on the regular bench press and I’m about Franklin’s size (6’1" and walk around at about 212 lbs.). I never see these guys working with that much weight. I know they don’t want to work out like that all the time because their wanting to build muscle endurance, but I would think it would be good to do every so often.
by brac on Mar 23, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m 6’2" and walk around about 208. I’m working on getting 275 × 8. Right now I’m getting 7 and having trouble with #8. Just thought it was weird that our stat’s are so close. When I fought in college, my power was a real advantage, but I did get tired if I didn’t win in the first two rounds.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 23, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Yo guys got me…Im about 6’2, 208 lbs and Im only getting 255 × 8
by john on Mar 23, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I am actually more surprised that they never go heavy on the deadlift. Having that kind of power is very helpful in a grappling situation.
by naturalshadow on Mar 23, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions
John, 255 × 8 is nothing to snease at. When your max is over 300lbs, you’re in the top 1% of males on the planet. (before people argue with me on that, consider all the fat asses you see every day.)
Naturalshadow, Yeah, powerlifting seems appropriate coupled with plyometrics (which we see them do). When you get really strong for your size (opposite of bodybuilding), it can be deceiving to your opponent. I don’t think I looked quite as strong as I was so in BJJ comp’s, I would play defense for a bit without letting the other guy really feel my strength (fighting loose), then when made a mistake I’d go for a sub and often times grind it out with pure strength (I was never the beautiful BJJ fighter) and the other guy always seemed surprised.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 23, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Power and brute strength aren’t necessarily the same thing. Some guy can be very strong, but if your lifting that weight slowly, it doesn’t convert to sport training. Power is different because your lifting weights at a quicker speed. MMA guys tend to train lighter weights because theyre training for power. When youre fighting, you want to be able to push that weight as fast as you can. Thats why they seem to go lighter, because you want to move quicker, but you dont want the weight to be too light either cause that doesn’t help. THere’s a tradeoff between speed and strength that you have to account for.
by pistol.pete on Mar 23, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s why I said plyometrics as you get closer to the fight. Muscles are like engines in a car. So powerlifting is like bulking up the horsepower, then plyometrics (explosive training) is like throwing in a race gears to focus that horsepower where it’s needed.
And yeah, explosiveness is definitely priority on your feet. However, with BJJ. That brute grinding force allowed me squeeze out some victories I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

It looked like that was one of Silva’s ‘light’ days. You guys got me too! I’m 4’5", 95 lbs and can bench 105 lbs! Just pissin with ya!

And yeah, explosiveness is definitely important

Everytime you get knocked out it is easier to be knocked out the second time third ect. Rich will be way to fast and hits far to hard for Silva. Franklin wins by KO
by Mike on Mar 23, 2009 10:31 AM EDT reply actions
dude, they have both been Ko’ed the same amount of times….so whats your point?
by john on Mar 23, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions
My point is Silva is going to get knock out by the faster man. Silva has been completly out not just dazed and hurt bad he’s been out cold
by Mike on Mar 23, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions
just about! Franklin got Ko’ed by Anderson twice and Machida
Wanderlei got Ko’ed by cro cop, Hendo, and Rampage!
Seems about the same to me!
by john on Mar 23, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Mike: so you are saying that Franklin hasnt been out cold? Have you watched any of his fights with Anderson or Machida?
by john on Mar 23, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Hey John… Franklin wasn’t out cold with Anderson…Sliva was out bad with Hendo and Jackson like sleeping….
by Robert(1) on Mar 23, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
no sry, Franklin hasn’t been out cold.. it depends on how you see it but Wanderlei has indeed been out cold atleast 3 times i don’t know if he was out when he fought Belfort back in the day.. Franklin has been knocked down several times in his career when hit on the button and that’s sometimes enough to stop a fight so being out cold or not doesn’t really matter
by RoB on Mar 23, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions
what matters is why somebody gets knocked out, and the simple explanation to that is almost all the time bad defense..
by RoB on Mar 23, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions
why am i even involved in this silly debate? since when did the fighter who got ko’ed less always win the fight? This is a very irrelevant discussion…Lets just end it here!
by john on Mar 23, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Also, I think we all herd this from Joe Rogan. Who knows if it’s even really true that getting knocked out cold makes it easier to happen the next time. Might be all BS. Franklin wins, but not b/c his past KO’s have been less devistating. I just don’t thing Franklin is suceptible to being bum rushed brawler style. However, Wandy is certaily susceptible to strong striker with good movement and reach advantage.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 23, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Anderson Silva literally beat Franklin’s face in TWICE. He should retire instead of being like another Liddell or Hughes.
by TJ on Mar 23, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions
When Rich loses to say, Kieth Jardine, as opposed to 3 of the best in the world, I’ll agree with you.
Wandy is going to sleep. And I’m not a Rich Franklin fan.
by Jon on Mar 23, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions
Damn it must be sad to be Keith Jardine lol, I don’t think this is the first time i’ve heard something along the lines of “if you get beat by Keith Jardine, you’re just washed up.” I don’t particularly like the guy but damn, thats harsh.
by O damn he got caught on Mar 23, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions
it is harsh, and it is untrue… jardine put a beatdown on forrest and if i remember correctly, forrest was holding the title not long ago
by brendan on Mar 23, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Jardine also did extremely well against Rampage.
by naturalshadow on Mar 23, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
easy TJ, all champs fade eventually, but I’d say Liddell and Hughes can still topple alot of UFC fighters in their respective weight classes. I’d still like to see Chuck rematch Jardine, thats one I think he can get back…as much as I don’t like him, I think Rashad’s just to fast for Chuck.
by Chadx23 on Mar 23, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Franklin is still in his prime….just can’t beat Anderson….Liddell and Hughes both are old and slow… big difference
by Robert(1) on Mar 23, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
John, Anderson Silva beat him bad twice but he wasn’t laying on the canvas with his leg twitching. I know that Machida KO him but that was years ago. Siva got KO in three of his last four fights. I am not a big Franklin fan, I hope Silva can pull it out. I just don’t see it happening.
by Mike on Mar 23, 2009 11:11 AM EDT reply actions
This is a tough fight for me to call, not just because I really like both guys. To me, Rich can win this fight if he simply uses his size and takes Wandy down, stays on top and pounds him. Do this over and over. BUT this is not Rich’s style. He will prob. come out and try to use his reach advantage and throw punches. I know people will disagree but I think Rich is really over rated in his stand-up. He doesn’t have one punch ko power like a Wandy, Chuck, Rampage, Hendo, etc. and he is not very technical. His punches are looping, he doesn’t have a good hard stiff, straight jab either. He just kind of flops it out there. So if this fight stays standing and I think it will, Rich can win by dec. if he keeps his distance and out strikes him by being busier. If Wandy can get in on him like he did Jardene, then Wandy can win by ko or tko. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict Rich by decision although I can see it going either way with no clear favorite.
by brac on Mar 23, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions
Wandi has been on the ground with some big mofo’s on top of him and still managed to get back to his feet. I don’t think he has to worry about Rich taking him down and keeping him there. I’m %100 sure on this, Wanderlei is walking out of that cage with the W. If they get into a wild exchange Rich is getting KO’d and I can see the pace that Wanderlei sets in this fight being too much for Rich. I know Franklin comes in great shape but he looked a little tired against Dan. I think if that happens in this fight and it goes the distance, he’ll take rd 1, rd 2 will be close and then Silva will demolish him in rd 3 with his relentless cardio.
by O damn he got caught on Mar 23, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I can def. see Wandy winning this fight too but I don’t think the Franklin/Hendo fight will have anything to do with Rich’s cardio in this fight. That was a fight that I just don’t think Rich really wanted to win. He did not want to do the tuf show again and he did not want to have to drop back down to 185 again after he’s been trying to had some size to his frame to stay at 205.
by brac on Mar 23, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Wanderlei focuses too much on his strength and conditioning. I feel like he is overtrained every fight.
Wand, stop burning your muscles out and running around with a snorkle on, and start sparring instead.
Left hook, right hook, left hook, right hook, left hook, right hook is not an effective combination!!
by Brandon on Mar 23, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions
yea you got a point; I was really excited when he was working with Couture on his wrestling, but its hard to tell if he’s implimented that into his overall game because the last 2 fights since that training have been over too quickly. May as well call in Freddie Roach next lol
by O damn he got caught on Mar 23, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
yep you’re right on Brandon! when it comes to fight time Wanderlei barely moves, he’s very stiff from all of his training.. everybody knows how Wanderlei moves in he
s done it for years, sometime you have to change and mix it up.
by RoB on Mar 23, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I have a feeling we are going to see the SMART wanderlei start showing up to fight. Whenever wanderlei legitimately respected his opponents striking, he fought a very smart and technical fight. GO back and watch the footage from his fights against HUnt and cro Cop (the 1st fight that Wand won, but was ruled a draw)…that was a very different wanderlei, then the one we have become accustomed to seeing. I think he gets cocky at times, doesnt respect his opponents, and just chooses to bullrush his opponents nad overwhelm them….Look when he fought Chuck, he showed a lot of respect for his striking and fought a good 2 first rounds.
I have a feeling that from here on out, we are going to see a more technical wanderlei, but still as exciting as ever!

I’m just hoping wandy WILL be able to bullrush opponents when he is much closer to their size.
Franklin will still show up bigger than WAND this fight though.
Wanderlei @ 185 is interesting.

anyone notice that hes mainly working the back and bicep muscles, which are used primarily for pulling aka CLINCHING muscles? just a theory

Thats awsome. Cant wait for this fight WAR WANDERLEI !
by TAPOUT LOCO on Mar 24, 2009 2:44 AM EDT reply actions
wandy is isolating muscle groups in his training program. so he’ll prob be doing technique work, sparring etc and then when muscles are tired he would start the lifting program. each lifting session he would concentrate on different body parts. back and biceps are often worked together because they both used during a pulling action and in all of these the bicep isnt the main working muscle its the lats. clinch specific yet lats provide the movement in the punching action too. some of u were mentioning that u lift more than him, probably his target wud be high reps and sets aswell as heavy weight cos he is after muscle endurance and brute strength. also doing high reps will help him cut his weight down to 185 because the muscle is working for longer thus burning more calories. he’s a machine, wandy for the win!
