by brendan on Mar 23, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
who u telling Brendan? I thought bonnar was a lock! I can’t front guys, I am seriously on this dudes Bandwagon! dude is just F’in EXPLOSIVE!!!
If I were Jon Jones, I would get a fake Brazilian Birth certificate, and get Anderson Silva to train me(brazilians typically only train each other)….3 years from now…the championship belt would be inevitable!

Bones Jones came out of no where too me as well..
I thought Bonner was going to smash him..I was thinking the UFC brought in some ‘random’ just for Bonner to ‘put out’ so he would keep in the fans eyes..
Well the fans wont forget the one-sided beat down Bones put on Bonner..I can’t wait for his next fight..

Yep, this kid has a great attitude and skills to match. I know both his UFC fights went the distance and I was little concerened he was not a finisher, but after that I know he can. Does he have a opponet and event for his next fight scheduled yet?
by BNF on Mar 23, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, he is fighting Jake O’brian for his next fight..I dont remember when, but I think it is already offcially on a card already.
by Stagger-Lee on Mar 23, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Your right, only Jon can make me excited about a Jake O’Brian fight!
by BNF on Mar 23, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions
He looks like he is taking the piss out of those other dudes and practicing some moves on them!!
He has obviously been a bit more reserved since joing the UFC but still amazing to watch. I like this guy a lot.
by Ca$z on Mar 23, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions
That was some sharp fightin’ right there! Now he’s taking on Jake O’Brian next?…and we thought the Bonnar fight was lopsided! Jones is going to de-construct O’Brian. I’m calling it right now…Bones finishes him early.
This kid understands the subtle nuances of fighting. Things like body mechanics and much more. He’s not locked into just one way to utilize a technique. Like someone else in this thread pointed out tHat makes him hard to predict which gives him a constant edge. Keeps the other guy from mounting any credible attack sequences & combos cuz he’s too worried about what Bones will do next. I’m definitely a fan of this kid!

It’s weird when we all agree, but I have to say I can’t wait to see Bones fight again. I think he’s already ready for a top 5 guy.

I was really disappointed that Bonnar lost because I’m a big fan of his and I really wanted him to get back the momentun he had built up before his injury. I hope he can get back on track and we can see him some more wars.
Jones looked incredible in that fight and this kid said on Inside MMA that he is basically self taught…that’s pretty crazy. He watches MMA a lot and just mimics moves he sees and adapts them into his game. He fought 8 times last year and sometimes only a couple weeks apart. He’s a little too into the whole showmanship part of fighting and being the kid that he is…he can get away with it. I’d like to see him get into a reputable camp where he can really start to get some solid technique under his belt and some discipline. He admits himself that he has no ground game but his wrestling lets him dictate where the fight goes. That’s all well and good but eventually everyone hits the mat in some fight…no matter how good your wrestling is. It’ll be interesting to see if he can keep off his back against a solid wrestler in O’Brien…hopefully he’s practicing getting back to his feet. I hope he destroys Paddington bear and gets a true test next.

Jon Jones = Truth. His fight with Gusmao was just something else. Never seen him before the UFC but had read about this brilliant kid out of the east coast on theGARV but seeing it was just so awesome. I just imagined all the years of his fights we’re gonna enjoy.

he’s just one of those fighters you don’t get board watching, after silva i would love rich franklin to fight this guy.
by Blazy J on Mar 23, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions
I think he needs a few more fights before he gets a guy like Rich.
by Jizzo on Mar 23, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
yea, this guys is fun to watch! Props to joe silva or who ever spotted him, unlimited potential!
by fokman on Mar 23, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
haha awesome! love how he watches other fighters moves and takes it into his own game. he thinks fighting and he has the feel for it! it’s all in the head and this kid has the physique to do whatever his head says!
by RoB on Mar 23, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions
good post! Until he faces top notch competition, this Kid can basically just do whatever he wants in the cage…its just doesnt matter. He uses his imagination, thinks it up and then BOOM!…it works! Not only does this kid bring unorthodox strikes to the table, but he also brings unorthodox takedowns/throws…this kid is just ultra exciting and I wouldnt miss one of his fights for anything in the world!
Good luck to his opponents training partners trying to mimick this kids skills!
Give him another tune up fight or 2, and I would love to see him go at it with Brandon Vera…they can make that fight a co-main event on a ppv, and regardless of Bones’s inexperience, and Vera’s under-achievements…I would be happy to purchase that fight as a co-main event!
by john on Mar 23, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
John,
That sounds like a very nice match up. Jones and Vera would be fun to watch.
by Jeff on Mar 23, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I will co-sign that fight! Vera/Bones would be great..
Bones and Banha would be insain as well!
But I think ‘up and coming’ LHW’s like Bones should stand clear of Luis Cane..
by Stagger-Lee on Mar 23, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
thats what I was going to say stagger! I dont think any rising stars should be matched up against Banha….that dude is ruthless!
by john on Mar 23, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions
yep, Bahna does not have the name recognition he should have for ppl to understand how good he really is..
by RoB on Mar 23, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions
All I know is I would hate to fight a guy like this. It seems like no matter how hard I would try, he would kill me with those boney knees and boney arm combination’s. No pun intended being his nickname is Bones!
by TRAVO on Mar 23, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions
Dude is a beast I hope he sticks with it and has a very successful career. I just don’t want him to get cocky and “vera” himself.

im still waiting for someone in mma to throw a spinning round house kick….back in my teen years fighting in Karate tournaments…I would throw a few spinning back kicks…get my opponents to drop there hands and then throw a spinning roundhouse kick and it would be OVER!!! No one could ever defend it….I have always wondered why no one in mma tries it…Anderson Silva could definitely pull it off~! Anderson actually throws Diagonal kicks, which is also a karate technique!
by john on Mar 23, 2009 4:06 PM EDT reply actions
He also throws a mean teep and front kick. I bet that if cung lee ever fought again you might see some of those kicks from him as well.
by ehoglund on Mar 23, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes he does…I would say that Cung and Anderson have the best chances of successfully implementing those techniques!
I like Boetsch’s teep/front kicks as well!

This guy is straight in ym top 3 after seeing only 1 of his fights. He will be champ.
by Tony on Mar 23, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions
jon bones jones is gonna wake up and realize he needs a real training camp instead of his college wrestling buddies.. there’s a reason boxers/pro strikers fight th way they do and it’s not because they saw it in youtube..
by ah on Mar 23, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions
and when that happens watch out cause this dude has got some amazing potential
by Jared on Mar 23, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Jones speed and awkward strikes would be too much for Hammill. Not to mention his Greco wrestling would cancel out Hamill’s amateur wrestling.
by Machine on Mar 23, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha he studies fighters, remembers their moves, perform them.one thing is for sure – He honestly enjoys to fight.
now lets sit back and see how he does in the Ufc – Thumbs up for jones!
by MMA040 on Mar 23, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions
the MMA (striking) he learned he learned from the internet he admits , THAT is scary, with the right camp this guys potential is unlimited ..great attitude also “little something for the fans” he says about his ‘booty shake’ ! karma and best of luck Mr Jones from Canada eh! ! i WILL be watching and WILL pay per view any and all of your fights for sure! peace OUT!

Johnny bones jones, man that guy kicks ass and the ali shuffle……..forget it this guy is kickin ass and taken names
by Irish on Mar 23, 2009 5:38 PM EDT reply actions
This guy is pretty flashy and confident and all, fun to watch, but if he tries fighting like that against the top guys in LHW he will be on the wrong end of a highlight reel. Hes got the moves but his defense is wide open, his judo throws are fun to watch but a guy like Maia would have him tapping before he hit the ground if he turns his back to him. He will either have trouble making top 10 in LHW or change his game up and become a whole lot more conservative.
I predict a few harsh lessons along the way for him in the UFC, at the hands of top level Jits or a heavy hitters counter KO.
by PanicZoo on Mar 23, 2009 6:47 PM EDT reply actions
Panic, those are actually Greco-Roman throws and Damian Maia is at 185
by Bill Maher on Mar 23, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Pedantry aside Bill, he has holes in his game. He breaks 2 pretty fundamental rules 1. dont fight with your hands at your waist 2. dont turn your back on a fight. Its why hes exciting to watch but it could limit his success too.
by PanicZoo on Mar 24, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Jones is definitely exciting to watch. The youth factor is a big plus for him. Obviously he has only scratched the surface of what he potentially could become as a fighter. I agree that a top notch camp would help him get to that next level, I just hope that he doesnt abandon his flashy, unpredictable style for a more patient approach as climbs up the ladder. The thing that makes this guy such a threat is the very fact that he throws everything from any angle at his opponents. Add to that the fact that Jones is super explosive and has relatively crisp striking which makes a him very tough to deal with. The only question I see is his jaw. Has it been tested? He takes big chances and will eventually get stung so Im interested to see how tough his chin is.

Jones vs hamil would be a great fight for jones. I think he could take Hamil in the first round.

Bones physique looks like a boxer rather than a wrestler, just an unusual talent for having a wrestling background. A future champion in the making.
