Josh Neer vs Kurt Pellegrino likely moved to UFC 101 on August 8

The lightweight match up between 155-pound veterans Josh Neer (25-7-1) and Kurt Pellegrino (13-4) will likely take place at UFC 101 on August 8 -- not UFC Fight Night 19 on August 5 as previously reported.

MMAmania.com learned about the bout switch to pay-per-view (PPV) over the weekend, indicating that the East Coast destination for the show ("Batman" is a New Jersey Native) appears to be on the right track. In fact, while nothing is official at this time, the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., still appears to be the likely destination as we first reported.

Since posting a 2-3 record in the UFC, "The Dentist" won six of seven fights outside the promotion before returning to the Octagon and defeating Din Thomas by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 13. He followed that up with a split decision loss to Nate Diaz, but not before earning "Fight of the Night" in their three-round war at UFC Fight Night 15 back in September.

Neer, who promises "Win, lose or draw I’m going to bring it," would go on to nab his second straight "Fight of the Night" in a win over Mac Danzig at FN 17, which no doubt prompted the UFC to award him with a recent contract extension for his efforts inside the cage and his ability to electrify the crowd with his aggressiveness.

It's going to take every ounce of that talent for Neer to get past the crafty Pellegrino. "Batman" has flirted with being recognized as a top competitor in a very crowded division on numerous occasions throughout his career; however, he has been plagued by inconsistency just as he reaches the precipice of contendership.

After being submitted by Nate Diaz at Fight Night 13 last April, Pellegrino was able to string together two consecutive wins including a solid unanimous decision nod over Thiago Tavares at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" back in September and a submission victory over Rob Emerson at FN 17 just last month.

A win over the surging Neer would unquestionable re-establish him as a force to be reckoned with.

UFC 101 is expected to feature a major title fight, as well as a co main event between former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy "The Natural" Couture as he locks horns with former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira. Additionally, Thiago Silva and ex-205-pound kingpin Forrest Griffin are also expected to hook ‘em up.

Sick fight. I would have liked to see Neer win a cuople more fights in a row, but should be in interesting matchup.

Batman should win via superior wrestling game but neer will win with sheer grit since Pellegrino always chokes when it really counts.

Great fight, hopefully it wont be televised! I will be live at this event so, I would still get to see it on the undercard. Philly is a pretty big market, and I would like to see a stacked main card for its 1st ever PA event!

I dont think that they can air both the Neer/Batman and Tavares/Guillard fights! at least one of these fights needs to be put on the undercard. I will be disapointed if these are both main card fights.

Neer-Guillard rematch at LW would be sick. . .

i recently read that the ufc is planning two ppv’s for august. one in the beginning taking place in philly as ufc 101. and then ufc 102 taking place in portland toward the end of august. UFC 101 would likely be headlined by penn vs. florian while ufc 102 would be headlined by couture vs. nougueria.

either way both cards look sick

Hey guys back from my spring break road trip. Went to NYC, Boston, Upstate New Hampshire/Vermont, Montreal, St Patty’s in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, now back in Daytona.

Didn’t seem like I missed a whole lot of news. Biggest things I caught up on were the Lashley fight, the 101/2 match ups, and some Undisputed trailers. oh, and Affliction’s dumbass going head to head with UFC 100. What a deathwish…

On the subject of news, I hear that Ninja Rua is going to Dream, Gomi to Shooto, Dean Lister calling out Fedor in ADCC, and the UFC looking at Detroit.

As for the match ups discussed on this thread
Neer/Pellegrino__ Neer by Unanimous Decision
Forrest/T.Silva__ Forrest by Unanimous Decision
Tavares/Gillard__ Tavares by submission
Kenny/BJ _ Kenny by Split or Majority Dec
Randy/Nog _
Randy by Unanimous Dec
Kendall/Willy~G__ Kendall by TKO

With that last fight, I really like Wilson, and he can wreck nearly anyone in the division when he is at his best, but I don’t know how he’ll handle Kendall’s clinch. Kendall was getting roughed up against Day, but he stayed cool and ended up knocking him stiff. Willy~G will have to do the same as Cote, Rivera, and Day but stay calm enough to not get caught.

lot of boring fights you got except the kendall wil g fight.

glad to see im not the only one going for florian.

how about bones/irish,akiyama/belcher?

by NM on Mar 22, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Johnny Bones should dominate Obrien easily. Obrien doesn’t seem to do well against guys who are better wrestlers/stronger than him, as seen in the Cain V (wrestling disadvantage) and Arlovski (strength disadvantage) fights. And if hes going to Split Dec Christian Wellisch, then he will definetely struggle with Johnny Bones. I think Bones has a wrestling, striking and strength advantage over Obrien, and he will win a lopsided decision.

Akiyama/Belcher is very interesting to me. I’d like to see if Belcher really is coming into his own and this fight should/could break him into the top 10 UFC Middleweights. Akiyama is a tricky guy though, and I’m picking him to submit Belcher. Belcher has only won one of his high profile fights; he choked against KEndall, Day, and had no answer to Okami. If he wins impressively, then he should be fighting Marquardt IMO for a title shot. If he wins, he will have beat Herman, Kang, Akiyama, and Marquardt. No arguing with that resume.

And on Kenny/BJ, if this fight would’ve happened in August last year or even anytime before the GSP fight, I’d say BJ would dominate him. But I think BJ is all shook up from 94, and I don’t think he’s that committed. Kenny will come out with a fire under his ass, and be able to keep up a fast pace with BJ for the first 2 or 3 rounds, then pull away in the 4th and 5th for a very close decision. Maybe a 10-8 round somewhere in there with BJ latchted on Kenny’s back for a whole round, or Kenny having the mount for most a round.

There are 2 PPV’s in August, 102 is in Portland headlined by Couture/Noguiera and Griffin/T.Silva

by Jeremy on Mar 22, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i heard that to Couture has talked about his fight in portland.

this may be true but it would be better if Big Nog and Couture where the co main event of 101 with Kenflo Penn headlining because IMO Couture Nog aint that exciting of a fight.

by NM on Mar 22, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunoo about that. But, I also read that Penn vs KenFlo will headline UFC 101 in Phili.

UFC 102 would take place in Portland with Couture vs BigNog as the headliner.

couture has said he is fighting at the end of august and penn has said he is looking to fight either the end of july or early august. This looks to be true.

Is the August 5th fight night to be the card that airs prior to TUF 10’s debut??

Is Fight Night 19 still going down?
