lets hope you get back on your game iceman, still a fan, and hoping you retire on a good note

by neihrick on Mar 18, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

It is amazing how 2 fighters who were formerly considered virtually invincible now almost seem like has-beens in the twilight of their careers. Still good PPV draws though.

by DrPepper on Mar 18, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

it certainly looks that way, but watching their past few fights, shogun looks to have the same skills, just no endurance, and chuck became sloppy and aggressive, which is a bad combo, they should be able to fix whats needed

by neihrick on Mar 18, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

good analysis but Shogun is 26 and Chuck is 39…fans of both…I would lean towards Shogun making a run and still say that UFC fighters are just bigger fighters and Shugun expends alot of energy getting push around by these guys,Forrest looked at least 15 pounds heavier come fight night when they fought.

by Robert(1) on Mar 19, 2009 8:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Definitely spot-on! And consider the fact that Shogun[who’s still young] is not yet in the twilight zone. Same thing before with Belfort. From invisible to a ghost in a shell. It really is very difficult to always bring your A-Game in the octagon.

by Syd["a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 19, 2009 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t like that Chuck says “sometimes you get caught” as if that’s just part of the game he can’t help. He was dropping his hand on every left hook. I’d prefer to hear him say “I have some flaws that have been exposed, but I’m correcting them so that never happens again.” He also never acknowleges that the talent is greater today and that he needs to evolve. Chuck can always win, but I don’t think we see a title reign from this old dog ever again.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 19, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

But what he says is true! He got caught, IT HAPPENES!!!

by belfort_fan on Mar 19, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

he only got caught because… everybody gets caught because… his defensive skills are horrible that’s why, he leads with punches that leaves him wide open and he keeps his hands low all the time

by RoB on Mar 19, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

funny after how many years now liddell decided to bring in someone extra for his boxing and train at a real known camp- i think he should of done this yrs ago. I expect Chuck to win this fight is the perfect fight for him, shogun stand up is great but he leaves himself very open to counter strikes- especially if he gasses early then its light out cuz liddel in teh second and even early third round can knock anyone out with his over hand right- i see it a UD for Chuck i dont’ think Shogun has the mindset to stand and trade with him— anyone else think shogun should make a move to MW?? he’s a very small LHW also no???

by ricky on Mar 18, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

been posting it for almost a year now. same with wandy!

by COR on Mar 19, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Wandy is on his where there. I think he fights at 185 after his next fight with Rich at a catch weight of 195. If Shogun loses then he should seriously consider it, because the UFC doesn’t keep high paid fighters that lose for very long.

by naturalshadow on Mar 19, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

where = way. Also I think Chuck KO’s Shogun.

by naturalshadow on Mar 19, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

As much as I like Chuck he has fought a lot of people that I have wanted to see him lose to and this is no different.

This is a really good test for both of them and will be a decider to see who moves up into the upper ranks again.

Nothing would be sweeter than seeing Shogun back to his destructive ways and smashing Chuck in the 1st round and making a statement at the same time. The only downside to that is that it would probably be Chucks last fight if that happened. Realistically though this could go either way.

by Ca$z on Mar 19, 2009 7:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Well that’s where you can clearly see the skills of both. Even if they didn’t use to train at the well-known camps, they were just gobbling up the competition back then. It’s like a handicap to their opponents. You know, like an advantage for the opponents.

by Syd["a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 19, 2009 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions

You joking? Shogun walks around at 225-230 pounds. He is a light heavyweight through and through.

by Nick on Mar 19, 2009 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Indeed Nick, I always wonder why people think he should cut. I saw a video before his Griffin fight and he said he cuts 12 kilo’s to get to 93kgs (205) – this would mean he walks around at 231 pounds.

Shogun just needs to improve his cardio and emotions – then he will be the biggest threat to Machida.

by DownUnder on Mar 19, 2009 3:17 AM EDT up reply actions

There has been a lot of talk that since Shogun won the middleweight GP he didn’t train as hard for his fights… who knows really? He definitely didn’t train hard for Griffin or Coleman

by Nick on Mar 19, 2009 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree! When he goes, there is no one better to watch. The problem with this fight is that I like Chuck also, however, I really want to see Shogun stamp his mark in the UFC. Maybe we can see a fight similar to Chuck v Axe Murder, with Shogun winning.

If Chuck loses this, he will retire for a while, make a come back in a year or so against Tito Ortiz for one last rumble.

by DownUnder on Mar 19, 2009 5:22 AM EDT up reply actions

pride 33 allistair overeem was handling him like a bitch until he gasses, this is what i expect from chuck as i dont think shogun will look much different from his last fight and liddell has a good gas tank

by Jared on Mar 19, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

yep just mentioned that right above you bro..way too small for the UFC…Chuck didn’t go to a new camp sooner becuase he kept putting guys to sleep…I think his time is coimng to an end..slower punches, no knock outs in 4 fights and a softer chin not looking good for Chuck win or lose.

by Robert(1) on Mar 19, 2009 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont get how people can say chuck has a soft chin now, look at the shots that have dropped him, can you honestly say that those shots wouldnt drop any other 205er, also look at his fights in the past, he was never hit by a good power puncher cleanly, maybe his chin was never really so unbelivable, maybe it was just never tested with a seriously powerfull shot. i still think chuck has the skills to get back to title contention he just started to rely on his striking to much and thought he could take bigger shots than he actually could. i still think he has a good chin and can take a decient punch. i think there’s really only 1 way that chuck gets a title shot now and this fight depends on it. if he wins this fight i think he’ll be matched up with either forrest or jardine and if he beats either of them he will get a title shot.
i’m picking chuck by KO/TKO probably late 1st or early 2nd

by hughes on Mar 19, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Belfort and Overeem bounced bombs off his chin….Chuck fan here… but it;s time to retire…yes all those shots were hard but Chuck used to take them ….just like the first Rampage fight…he got mualed but not knocked out, big difference.

by Robert(1) on Mar 19, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree about the soft chin, Hughes. It isn’t that he has a soft chin, he just gets caught now. A few years ago he never got hit with solid shots. Probably because he is older and has slowed a bit. Rogan’s theory of getting your card punched too many times is a crock of garbage. The fact is the people he says this about are just not as good as they used to be.

I’m with you guys. I see Chuck knocking Shogun out, hopefully after that he can get on a roll again, I think he has a few scores to settle

by Derek on Mar 18, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe they’ll incorporate some sit-ups into his routine.

If anything in Chuck’s game needs “tightening”, it’s his abs and the lock on the liquor cabinet.

That said, Chuck by spectacular 2nd round KO.

by brendan on Mar 19, 2009 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Im really hoping to see the Chucky of old come back for a couple more fights. Rua can be great. This fight could totally go either way. Depends who is more technical and uses there strengths better.

Im voting Chuck

by enzo-enormous on Mar 19, 2009 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think chuck is going to win. shogun just has so many weapons that if he comes in shape and good conditioning liddell won’t be able to just knok him out. it will be a fun fight to watch though

by pimpinela on Mar 19, 2009 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

I sure hoped he would learn some boxing defense from Rampage and it looks like he knows his old school “hands down” approach aint cutting it anymore. Chuck’s only reason for that was to defend the takedown but heck, he gets right back up like 98% of the time so why not keep the hands up and avoid getting dropped or KO’d like he has the past few times? This is a good sign seeing im training with an old school boxing coach, Chucks striking was always good, he just needed good striking defense instead of always willing to take shots in order to land them. I’d like to see him throw more high kicks again. He threw one at Rashad after the 1st round bell and it looked like that thing had some power behind it. The guy has KO’d people in kickboxing matches with his feet, but agian, I think he avoids throwing high kicks to avoid the takedown. Anyway enough blabbing, hope to see Chuck KO Shogun, and I hope Shogun comes in shape so there are no excuses.

by Chadx23 on Mar 19, 2009 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

If Chuck wins where does it put him in the division? Who would he get next? Jardine? If Rua wins who will he fight next? Neither will get a title shot with a win. I hope it is a good fight and Chuck wins by split d.

by hatteras on Mar 19, 2009 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

Wow, I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone root for a split decision.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 19, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

i was kind of hoping for a disqualification due to groin strikes :)

by brendan on Mar 19, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 19, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the winner does fight Jardine, especially if that winner is Chuck.

by naturalshadow on Mar 19, 2009 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Rua can take on the winner of Silva and Griffin if he wins or maybe Jardine.

by Nick on Mar 19, 2009 2:13 AM EDT up reply actions

If chuck wins I think really exciting fights for him would be him and Forrest, Luis Cane, or Brandon Vera. I think those would all be good fights for him and also good fights for us fans!

I hope Shogun comes out with his sharp striking along with great cardio. He is still a young fighter and I believe he will be UFC champ in 2010. The only thing that worries me is the style of the two fighters. Chuck loves to back pedal and wait to catch you and it’s very effective. Shogun on the other hand is the hunter always pushing the pace and always moving forward. Unfortunetly that plays right into Chuck’s bread and butter. What I believe Shogun needs to do is tone it down a notch and keep circling right to take some power away from Liddell’s punches.

by Bluepit on Mar 19, 2009 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

i wish chuck would have soething more to say than “i just got caught”. he needs to become less predictable and admit that he overcommitted in the rashad fight, or he will get owned again. without changing his style, chuck will lose to any younger fighter that has heavy hands and some technical striking skills. that said shogun doesnt really have dynamite or striking skills superior to chuck. chuck definatly has the edge in this one.

by COR on Mar 19, 2009 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

at least hes not making bs excuses like “ummm vaseline on his back made me get my azz beat”

by brendan on Mar 19, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

it did though; inbetween the rounds they were putting vaseline on Rashads gloves; the impact of the punch was much greater because of the additional greasing agent on the fists of Rashad. Chuck doesn’t want to come forward and call out the Jackson camp, because he doesn’t want to get flamed. But we all know, that that is what happened.

I HAVE A QUESTION ……..There is so many American Top Teams out there, which one is he at? So your telling me he is in coconut creek florida training with thiago alves, thiago silva, mike brown, JZ calvecante, and the list goes on?? Or did he just bring the A.T.T. instructor to the pit???

by scottythebody on Mar 19, 2009 1:19 AM EDT reply actions

He travels back and forth. I went to a seminar in Coconut Creek with Chuck, Hackleman, Lindland, and the head instructor at ATT. It was pretty cool. I got to meet J.Z., Horwich, and a few others as well.

by naturalshadow on Mar 19, 2009 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions

We discovered some things about “Beer-gut Chuck” when he was on top for those few years…he couldn’t handle the notoriety. He showed up stoned, either weed and/or coke, to national TV interviews. He believed the hype, even his own, and he was exposed later as white trash with some fighting talent. The early round knock-outs that he suffered lately should have sent him into retirement, but like most celebrities who gain lots of attention, he craves more and doesn’t realize that it makes him look foolish.

Sad, really.

by TJ on Mar 19, 2009 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

wasn’t it after his first lost to rampage in pride, that the excuse he used was because he changed up his traing camp to much.

by Bass on Mar 19, 2009 1:25 AM EDT reply actions

I know Shogun used to be # 1 in the world, but since he stepped in the octagon, all he did was just gas out! In Japan, they let ‘em get away with the juice, I know. But since Shogun knows that it’s more strict in the USA when it comes to steroids, then why the F doesn’t he change his training regimen to be well conditined[i.e. Sherk’s “Caveman” training]?!

If he still slacks off in this Iceman fight, then he has to fight elsewhere since the octagon isn’t for him. Man I miss his “capoeira-esque” kicks!

by Syd["a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 19, 2009 1:32 AM EDT reply actions

I just really hope chuck comes in shape in mind set and in the mood!! If he does there are few who can live with him, even at his age. the boxing defense especially at his age is paramount for him to do well as his reflexes and footwork are a little slower

Chuck Ko in the 2nd plEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ!!!!!

by mo on Mar 19, 2009 1:47 AM EDT reply actions

Well, “Beer-gut Chuck” is still trying to milk his notoriety. Even when he couldn’t handle it when he was on top (remember he showed up to national TV interviews coked out), he proved he was just white trash with a little fighting talent. The last several knoockouts he suffered should have sent him into the stands as a perennial camera UFC shot, but Chuck wants a few more beatings. Sad, really.

by naturalshadow on Mar 19, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

A lot of people are talking about Shogun’s stand-up not being tight… it hasn’t always been as tight as a Machida but his aggressive style has got him far and he rallies into positions where he can get his opponent on the ground. He has to be one of the top 205’ers when it comes to BJJ. Maybe Arona, lil Nog and Machida are better (2 of those guys not in the UFC).

Where the hell is Arona!! I think his style would suit the UFC more than it did in Pride. He’d give some of the top 205’ers in the UFC fits.

chuck will get KNOCKED OUT.

by Il Nino on Mar 19, 2009 4:03 AM EDT reply actions

finally chuck realizes what he really needs to do, john hackleman is not helping chuck anymore,i think the reason it take too long before chuck move into the other camp because he’s been w/john hackleman for years ever since he start fighting & during his prime and glory days, so its so hard for chuck to tell john that he wants to move another camp so he can add some skill into his arsenal, but that’s life,he needs to move on if something doesnt seems right.

by mad_drummer on Mar 19, 2009 4:14 AM EDT reply actions

Liddell will win by KO.
Anyone who thinks Shogun even has a chance is stupid as fck.
I mean how many times does the guy have to prove that he’s just an average fighter without the roids?

by Lester the Pimp on Mar 19, 2009 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know if I buy the roids excuse 100%, roids make your muscles bigger, they don’t make you a cardio machine (think about it, more muscle requires more oxygen, heart beating faster and harder to pump blood to the muscle = negative effect on cardio)….but then again, I wouldn’t know since I never used anythng other than protein powder…I think Shogun’s problem is he got WAY out of shape for Forrest and his knee was obviously screwed up big time since it took TWO surgeries to fix. Knee injuries are hard to overcome…
