Kimbo Slice ready for a career in boxing

Props: The Nassau Guardian

Quoteworthy:

"Boxing is really my first desire. I have a lot of love for it and believe I can do pretty well. [The sport of] MMA is somewhat of a project for me. Boxing is one dimensional while there are a lot of dimensions in MMA. I don't think it would be a hard transition from MMA to stand-up boxing because of my fighting style. Not taking anything away from boxing preparation, MMA training is extremely hard. When you consider martial arts training, you have to prepare for kicks to the head and legs, and opponents wanting to grapple and throwing you to the ground, pounding you with their knees and hands, whereas in boxing you just have to be prepared to weave and bob although the training can be just as intense. At this point in my career, I want to take that same drive and focus that I invested in MMA and put that into training for pro-boxing cards."

-Former EliteXC headliner Kevin Ferguson considers a move to boxing after the rise and fall of his very brief MMA career. "Kimbo Slice" still has two MMA fights remaining on his contract and hasn't competed since losing in just 14 seconds at Elite XC: "Heat" on October 4, 2008 to replacement fighter Seth Petruzelli. Can Kimbo recapture some of the hype that propelled him into a main event in front of millions on CBS? Or has the former backyard brawler used up his fifteen minutes? Time will tell...

Is he going to be boxing behind the Taco bell?

by BeerMan on Mar 17, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

Thank Gawd he is leaving MMA, now all the boxing fans are stuck with him. I guess after Bas kicked him to the curb he figured out that he wasn’t cut out for the sport, huh.

Arlovski Kimbo would be funny.

by RobH86 on Mar 17, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

no, that would be murder (with arlovski doing the murdering).

by B_Hos on Mar 17, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

who knows, if kimbo caught him he’d drop Arlovski like a sack of sh*t.

by BMO on Mar 17, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much. Kimbo definitely has KO power. Ask the thugs he’s faced, hehe!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 18, 2009 5:47 AM EDT up reply actions

BMO- Kimbo had trouble knocking out some of the bums on his youtube fights, so I would say his KO power is a bit over rated. If you are talking about Arlovski’s suspect chin, then let me just say that getting knocked out by Fedor is much more understandable than getting knocked out by Seth Petruzelli in 14 seconds. Arlovski may have a soft chin, but we know that Kimbo’s is an off button.

by naturalshadow on Mar 18, 2009 6:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed…lets ask this question….what would AA do to the same guys Kimbo knocked out? Case closed!

by Robert(1) on Mar 18, 2009 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Arlovski isnt exactly my favorite Heavyweight, but I am a fan, because he is a russian pimp! Where did you silly people get the idea that he has a weak chin? How many chins in this world do you guys honestly believe could stand up to Tim Sylvia or Fedor. Those are 2 heavy hitters. its not like he got KO’ed by Pe da Pano Cruz, like Bitch-made Frank MIr did!

by john on Mar 18, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Lol…That’s why it would be funny.

maybe he should box Sylvia…..guess they both think they are boxers now….

by slocruiser on Mar 17, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

Chances are if he cannot take a jab from Seth Petruzelli, he has no business in boxing.

He is rather short, and has short reach, and is quite old to be making a professional debut.

Hopefully he is smart enough to cut weight to JR Heavyweight or he will be getting dropped by jabs his entire career.

Why are we still talking about this fraud?

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 17, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

oh well good business decision..anderson,tim silva.vitor belfort, adre arlovski, all want to be boxers…its the money plain and simple..boxing is where the money’s at….unless you ask Dana White

Its a sad state of affairs when Seth Petruzelli is the reason for your retirement

by Dustone on Mar 17, 2009 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

this mathafaka don’t belong in boxin eitha. mathafaka shoulda jut stay away from sports naw mean….bitchass should just fight bums and shit. 305 haaaaaa

by wigga on Mar 17, 2009 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

Damn Im confused, I was a Slice fan, but you take one loss and you call it quits? Some of the best fighters presently and ever have been knocked out in the first round and in the first 30 secs of a fight but you get back up and live to fight another day, Kimbo should be DYING for a rematch with Seth, everytime you hear him talk he should be talking rematch, but the fact that he took the loss and just said fuck it I quit says alot about him….Kimbo has one less fan now.

by Philly Phil on Mar 17, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

ya hu thats pretty bad!!!

by The Philicutioner on Mar 17, 2009 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

At least now he only has to worry about getting his as beat in a one dimension

by The Philicutioner on Mar 17, 2009 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Good. That’s where he belonged all along. If you watch his videos, all his fights were with boxing rules (no ground fighting, no elbows, etc.). He was just way out of his element in MMA. Hopefully the extra padding on the boxing gloves with help him take a punch. I wish him the best but will be glad not to have to read about him anymore.

by GangOfOne on Mar 17, 2009 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

According to sport science, there’s a hair-thin difference in force created by a punch with a boxing glove and an MMA glove. The huge difference in power will be noticed if one had bare fists.

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 18, 2009 6:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I saw that episode as well, and I still don’t quite understand how that is true? They sure feel different when you get hit. haha

by naturalshadow on Mar 18, 2009 6:59 AM EDT up reply actions

he needs to stick to MMA its his only chance, i feel sorry for him if he goes into boxing.

by stats on Mar 23, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess you got to keep looking until you find something you’re good at, or not.

by UFC Champ on Mar 17, 2009 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Any time anything came up about kimbo everyone said they wanted him out of MMA, you may get what you want- be happy.

by gotWhatYouWantedAndStillNotHappy on Mar 17, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

I know I’m alone here but he’s not that bad of a boxer. If anyone has watched some undercard heavyweights fights they would understand that boxing has less depth than mma. Guys come in out of shape and with poor technique. He has good power, fasts hand and is marketable.

by pug on Mar 18, 2009 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

That and with that beard, you can’t tell where he chin is…

by JRK on Mar 18, 2009 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Seth could tell where it was at!!!!!!!

by Winner by Strikes!! on Mar 18, 2009 6:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Which means now that he knows he can’t cut it in the MMA world, he’ll try and make it in the one-dimensional world of boxing. He’ll fight a couple of cans, like he did in MMA, then get smoked by someone of mediocre skill and talent, like he did in MMA. But hey, this guy will still have more bank than the rest of us. So who’s the chump?

by JRK on Mar 18, 2009 2:37 AM EDT reply actions

Me? and some chump change…

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 18, 2009 6:02 AM EDT up reply actions

true that. i need to fight in my backyard and post it on youtube. i’ve got the beard and everything. now all i need is a backyard. damn condo.
