UFC 97 BLOW-BY-BLOW LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:
Druby here
UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites (185-pound limit)
Round one: One minute gone by and literally no action yet just dancing. Leites tries for a flying knee but nothing. 2 minutes and not one punch thrown. Jab from Silva. Inside leg kick from Leites and Leites goes for a head kick. Body shot from Silva. Silva with a uppercut, then lands a good sweep kick. Leites falls. Leites pulls half guard and is going for the take down, Silva with a good punch but Leites now clinched against the fence. Thats the bell, horrible action. Extremely boring, you have to give it to Leites b/c of the brief take attempt.
Round two: Inside leg kick from Leites. Head kick from Silva missed and Leites capitalizes with a take down. Silva with half guard. Silva to full guard now. Silva using a body triangle. Silva now working good elbows from the bottom. Silva scrambles to his feet. Body kick from Leites. Leg kick from Silva. The crowd is booing loud as can be and rightfully so. Id have to give that round to Leites again for his take down, but up to this point this is a painfully boring fight.
Round three: Good inside leg kick from Leites. Nice right from Leites. Leites falls to the ground and from a poke in the eye but the ref is not doing anything. Leites just laying on his back. Silva now chasing Leites around. Leites with a shot and Silva sprawls out. Silva with kicks to the thigh. Leg kick from Silva. Another leg kick from Silva. Leg kick from Silva. Body kick from Silva. Right from Leites. Leites for the 3rd time in a row literally falls to his back once against the cage to avoid having to strike. SICK kick to the knee from Silva and then a switch kick to the face. Silva now lands a good combo and is slowly picking up the pace. Good right from Silva then a leg kick. Leg kick from Silva. Leites with a lazy take down and falls and seems content to just lay on the floor. Thats the bell and that round goes to Silva for sure. Leites is beginning to embarrass himself.
Round four: Kick to the knee from Silva. Two more front kicks to the knee by Silva. Another kick to the knee from Spider. Leg kick snaps from Silva. Another leg kick. Nice right from Silva. Head kick from Silva another knee kick from Silva. Another stiff kick to the knee. Leites is content to just not engage what so ever. Leg kick from Silva and Leites looks to shoot but Silva sprawls out. Silva playing chase now. Leites shoots and misses and proceeds to lay on his back. Thats the bell and another round to Silva, but this is a miserable fight to watch. The fans are booing and for good reason. This is a mind numbingly boring fight thus far.
Round five: Leg kick from Silva. Leg kick from Silva. Leites throws a right then shoots but Silva tosses him off. Leites shoots again and Silva spins out and now is on top throwing some punches. Leites is bleeding from the nose now. Side kick to the body from Silva. The crowd starts chanting "bullshit" and loud and then they follow is up with the usual Canadian GSP chants. Knee kick from Silva. Leites shoots and nothing. Leites with a lunging right and misses and lays on the ground. Thats the bell, and Silva definitely won but it was a painful fight to watch. Leites refused to exchanges and collapsed to his back at any sign of trouble and Silva seemed content to dance, shuck, and jive throughout the contest to grab the win. Horrible main event from a viewers prospective, but in the big scheme of things Silva did win and is still champion and is his camp im sure thats the only thing that matters.
Final result: Anderson Silva defeats Thales Leites via Unanimous Decision
-end-
Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio Rua (205-pound limit)
Round one: Leg kick from Rua. Chuck lands a big right and then left and another right. Chuck with a combo and Rua lands a good right. Rua with an overhand right and then leg kick and Chuck lands a right. Right from Rua. Chuck misses with a right and then Shogun takes Chuck down and Lidell scrambles and Rua goes for a leg lock. Lidell again tries to get to his feet and now their clinched against the fence. Nice right from Lidell. Chuck with a right and then shucks off a take down and lands another solid right. Lidell now ducks under and gets a take down. Rua with a HUGE left and Chuck is out, Rua hops on top and pounds away and Chuck is out cold. WOW. I cant help but feel sad watching this. Take nothing away from Shogun Rua a great win for him, but Chuck Lidell's career might have just ended. He obviously is a shell of his former self.
Round two:
Round three:
Final result: Mauricio Rua defeats Chuck Lidell via TKO (Strikes) Round 1
-end-
Cheick Kongo vs. Antoni Hardonk (265-pound limit)
Round one: Leg kick from Hardonk. Nice left from Hardonk. Nice leg kick from Hardonk. Knee to the thigh from Kongo. Kongo catches a kick and Hardonk goes to the ground. Kongo snapping leg kicks from his feet while Hardonk is on his back. The ref stands them up. Nice straight right and then uppercut from Kongo. Their clinched up against the fence. Knees to the thigh from Kongo. Kongo looking for a double leg to take this to the ground. Kongo gets the take down. Kongo working on some big elbows. Kongo finishing with elbows. Thats the bell, slow pace not to much top level action. But id give the round to Kongo for his ground work and the take down.
Round two: Straight right from Kongo and Hardonk falls and now Kongo pounces on top and lands some good punches. Big right from Kongo. Hammer fists from Kongo. Elbows to the gut from Kongo. Hardonk is cut above his left eye now. Nice right to the head from Kongo. Hardonk trying to cause a stalemate thatll make the ref stand them up. Nice left from Kongo and then Kongo jumps up and lands some hammer fists and thats it this fight is over. It was an odd punch which didnt look to have much mustard on it but Hardonk seemed to be hurt bad, either way Kongo with another win and another step up the ladder of the heavyweight division. He has to be due a title shot in the near future.
Round three:
Final result: Cheik Kongo defeats Antoni Hardonk via TKO (Strikes) Round 2
-end-
Luis Cane vs. Steve Cantwell (205-pound limit)
Round one: Great left uppercut from Cane. Good leg kick from Cantwell. Nice combo from Cane. Body kick from Cane. Cane is moving forward aggressively. Nice right hook from Cane. Body clinch against the fence. Nice combo with Cane on the exit. Cane with the clinch and lands some knees and punches. Jab from Cane. Head kick from Cantwell. Nice body shot from Cantwell but Cane blocks most of it. Nice combo from Cane. Jab from Cane. Nice right from Cane. Leg kick from Cantwell. Nice right from Cantwell. Nice uppercut from Cantwell and thats the round. Cantwell looks game but Cane is the sharper more aggressive fighter to this point and definitely won round 1 10-9.
Round two: Nice right from Cantwell and then Cane lands a good combo. Cane with another big combo. Nice combo from Cane again. Body kick from Cane hits it mark. Jab from Cane then a body kick while Cantwell is on the run. Nice combo then body kick from Cantwell. Cantwell with a big right that stuns Cane momentarily. SICK head kick from Cantwell and then he lands a glancing knee and then a head kick. Nice duck under uppercut from Cantwell. Inside leg kick from Cane. Both fighters exchange simultaneous lefts hooks to end the rd. Id have to give that round to Cantwell 10-9 he found his comfort zone and his big head kick seemed to throw Cane off for the rest of the stanza.
Round three: Leg kick from Cane. Nice combo then body kick from Cane. Cane with a sharp uppercut and then a good body kick. Cantwell answers with a right. One two combo from Cane. Big right hook then head kick from Cantwell. Cane looks to be loosing some juice. Big left and knee to the body from Cane. 3 minutes left. Nice jab then knee to the body from Cane. Nice right from Cantwell. Triple jab from Cane. Cantwell is cut on the bridge of his nose. Good head kick from Cantwell but blocked by Cane. BIG knee and then a HUGE power right from Cane. Jab from Cane and then a knee to the head. Cane with a one two combo which hits its mark. Jab from Cane. Cane unloads to finish the round and Cantwell lands a counter. Thats the bell, great fight good action. Both fighters looked extremely promising but I think Cane stole that last round due to his obvious advantage in the power in his striking and the damage it caused.
Final result: Luis Banta Cane defeats Steve Cantwell via Unanimous Decision
-end-
Brian Stann vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (205-pound limit)
Round one: Inside leg kick from Krzysztof. Now they clinch up and Stann with a good right. Nice left from Krzysztof. Inside leg kick from Stann. Clinched up and Krzysztof with some knees. Krzysztof with a big double leg take down which was basically a tackle. Krzysztof right into full mount. Stann slips his way into side control now. Stann now with half guard, and Krzysztof looking for a Kimura but now he lets it go. But he goes right back to it and gets the submission. An easy win for Krzysztof, he looked solid.
Round two:
Round three:
Final result: Krzysztof Soszynski defeats Brian Stann via Submission (Kimura) Round 1

hardonk is tough as nails, he doesnt have a ground game but neither does kongo, this should be an awesome fight

U think so, I dunno, I see a quick ko, I think kongo gonna use reach to pick him appart
by phenomenal angel on Mar 15, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think Kongo will win by taking hardonk down and doing some good old LnP
NEWS:
bj penn has officially LOST the plot!
he said he didnt accept the fight in germany (with ken flo) because he doesnt get as much money overseas because ppl dont buy ppv as much
he is also trying to get GSP suspended for the greasing incident and therefore that would result in GSP/Alves fight being delayed!!
does this guy not realise how hated he is becoming… i have lost all respect for him!!

BJ has got it right about the ppv’s, it’s about money not the sport..
by RoB on Mar 15, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ufcaddict is right. both Kongo and Hardonk are great strikers but the difference will be Kongo’s takedowns and improved wrestling. Hardonk has the better submissions but I doubt that subs will be a factor.
I dont get why so many of you guys bash the THales vs. Anderson fight. Is THales the clear cut #1 contender? probably not, but he is a legit top 5 middleweight. Problem with the UFC mw divisions is the match making. Joe silva has got this division twisted around inside out, and no one will ever know who the #1 contender is until top fighters start facing each other.
Yes, I am probably tHale’s #1 english speaking fan, but I like Anderson a whole lot as well so its easy to remain unbiased on this one. Thales has a much better chance against Anderson than many of you guys seem to think. Do, I think tHales will win? NO! but I wouldnt be that surprised. dana bashes Fedor’s opponents, yet Dana has wasted 1 year of Anderson’s prime by having him fight CANS! Do you guys relaize that Anderson hasnt fought a decent opponent since last March when he fought Hendo? In the past year, Dana has wasted all our time by having Anderson fight James Irvin and Cote (who isnt a can), but had no shot in winning…not to mention the fight was uneventful. Silva hasnt been tested in over a year, which is why I am very happy about this match up. Its Silva vs. a legit top 5 fighters.
Dana Bashges Fedor’s opponents, yet the #1 p4p fighter on earth (according to Dana), is matched up against James Irvin?
Silva vs. Irvin = Fedor vs. Hong Man Choi…actually Choi might have even been the tougher opponent.
Thales has been training over at Arizona combat, working on his wrestling with guys like Bader and CB…both have spoken glowingly about thales’s improved wrestling. Thales has a great chin, and is easily a better ground fighter than Anderson.
Anderson better be working on his takedown defense, as well as defending that arm triangle that tHales loves.
You guys need to show Thales some respect. Yes Anderson is a gOD! but THales is a very skilled and tough cat, who will be floating around the top of the division for years to come. I truly believe that THales is capable of beating every single top middleweight in the UFC. whether he accomplishes it, is a different story.
Very excited to finally see Anderson not fighting a CAN!!!
From here on out, Anderson should only fight top middleweights like:
Marquardt
Maia
Wanderlei
Leites
Bisping
Hendo
Akiyama
Goveai if he can string together wins. Great fighter but inconsistent like Jardine
If THales loses this fight, the UFC HAS to book:
THales Leites vs. Demien Maia!

Even though Silva will win, Leites will give him problems. I’ve said it ever since it was announced. He has cleaned up his takedowns a lot working with Bader and thems at ACS, he has slick guard passing (way better than lutter for sure) and we all know that he can hit that arm triangle from everywhere. Also get f’n Brian Stann off the main card. He sucks plain and simple. Rather see Professor X and Kang get it on. Hardonk will win against Kongo. Watch and see.
by NameNotRequired on Mar 15, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whoa NNR! “Hardonk will win against Kongo. Watch and see.”…yeah by eyes-closed-head-down-wild-punch technique. Kongo is a waaaay better kick boxer. He’s faster, more technically sound and much more precise. Definitely more well rounded. Punching power may be about equal though. You’re pretty coherent with your posts so I need to understand the logic behind that pick….
by Machine on Mar 15, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hardonk has better ground work, guard game and overall grappling. Kongo takes the wrestling both defensive and offensive. Antoni’s better at swimming in the clinch and fighting close distance as well as better combinations which Kongo doesn’t do much. Reach and speed go for Kongo but like you said comparable power. From the outside, Hardonk’s leg kicks speak for themselves while Kongo doesn’t really use them as much. Finally chins – please refer to Kongo-Yvel. Hardonk’s has been tested hard and did just fine without him wilting. All signs point to upset pick especially nice for parlay bets IMO.

This is one of the best cards in a long time. To have Herman, Loiseau, Quarry, McDonald on the undercard, WOW. I see Silva via TKO. Leddel via KO,Soszynski via KO, Kongo TKO and Cantwell by KO. Alot of these guy like to swing so it will be good.

Wow.. I didnt think anyone else was exited for Hardonk-Kongo besides myself. Yes should be a good standup war…

Hardonk could kick Kongo’s head off so I believe he’s tough enough.
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 14, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hardonk is under rated. The guy has been consistently improving.
I do expect Kongo to win, but Hardonk is no can!
after this fight is over, I would like to see:
Hardonk vs. Junior Dos Santos
by john on Mar 15, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, I think Hardonk is a pretty solid HW, with a good chin(most of his UFC fights he’s taken a beating in the first few minutes), and obviously has good standup, which is why it makes me confused that this Kongo is facing him?
ok, sure, as a spectator it promises to be a good match up, but what will it really tell us about Kongo?
We already know he was excellent standup, but what about his wrestling/takedown/ground game?
The majority of the HW contenders at the mo have strong wrestling backgrounds, who could probably take Kongo down at will.
Plus beating someone like Hardonk won’t give him a title shot, so imo this match up (for Kongo) doesn’t make too much sense….
by Steve on Mar 15, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dos Santos would knock him out so bad! Hardonk is a guy that wins his fights by size, but that isn’t gonna be a factor when he fights someone just as big as him..
by RoB on Mar 15, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know if anyone has noted this or not but I thought I’d tell everyone…there’s a link on the front page of espn.com for live coverage of the event tonight. Granted it takes the reader to Sherdog, but front page of ESPN is pretty big. Also I say several people talking about it on ESPN this week. Most were completely uninformed, but Woody Page on Around the Horn was sticking up for it against some moron that described it as, “One guy laying on top of another.” Seems like ESPN is getting more interested in MMA by the day as the sport grows.

Can’t wait for Prof X to sub Kang’s ass outta the UFC.
by MoonUk on Mar 15, 2009 6:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes Kang is losing that fight for sure, he can’t handle the pressure..
by RoB on Mar 15, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rob: Kang is a very skilled fighter, who tends to dominate most of his fights and then makes a silly mistake and gets subbed.
Professor X has a great ground game. I expect professor X to be a nice underdog because I doubt that the American public knows much about him, so I look forward to betting some money on Prof X…but this is still Kang’s fight to lose. Octagon debut’s are not easy for anyone so chill out on the Kang bashing. He is a top 15 middleweight worldwide…lets see what he can do 1st before we start writing him off!
by john on Mar 15, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes sure i know what you’re saying, but Kang lets his opponents sub him even if he is way more skilled, which was the case against Belcher, he dominated the standup with ease and got so nervous that he shot in from a mile away and got caught.. he’s already lost the fight in his mind even if he’s out there winning and dominating, Kang wanted Belcher to submit him so he could get out of there, and he is supposed to be a BJJ black belt and a proffessional?.. his only chance is to get a quick finish in this one, cause there will be even more pressure in this one since it’s a must win at home (canada).. skills won’t do sh*t for any athlete in the world if you aint got your head in the game.
by RoB on Mar 15, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
not bashing that is just what has been happening to Kang is most of his losses throughout his career, when he’s the fav to win he loses.. his roll that he had in Japan is over now, and the confidence is gone
by RoB on Mar 15, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont disagree at all rob. I guess I am just hoping that he turns it around because the skills are there, but like you pointed out, if you aren’t strong mentally, it doesnt matter how skilled you are.

by SilasM on Mar 15, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To me, it seems like it would be mad hard to string wins together when you have to battle guys like Franklin, Maia, Okami and Gouveia. As a Canadian, I love to watch the guy, but he’s not really a complete fighter. I think of him as a guy who will usually provide a good competitive fight. Some he’ll win and some he’ll lose. He’s tough and has a great ground game, but he won’t ever string together many wins in the UFC nor will he get a title shot. Just a good solid vet, who IS definitely televised portion worthy, especially because he usually fights top comp.

This card is stacked in my opinion. Maybe not all contenders but all fights look solid with solid names in each one.
Hell, I’d rather see some of the undercard fights than the liddell shogun fight.
Get back to winning Wiman! Where’s the tenacious Wiman was saw in the Tavares fight? I thought Tavares threw everything but the kitchen sink at Wiman and he pulled out the win.
by chris on Mar 15, 2009 6:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If Chuck wins who does he fight next? I say Jardine. If he loses he should retire. If Shogon wins who does he fight next? I say rematch Forest when he comes back. He busted Griffin open last time and faught with an injured knee. If Machida beats Rashad he will get Rampage next. Winner gets Rampage but who will the loser fight? It will be the first loss for either of them.
I see Machida beating Rashad in a war and he will kill Rampage because Rampage cannot kick and therefore against a really good kicker gets kicked a lot. Hitting Machida is like grabbing a fish with boxing gloves on.

Card looks great. Some exciting fights right there.
I’m wondering how Silva will do after his lackluster performance vs. Cote.
Chuck Liddell vs. Shogun would have been AMAZING a year ago.. now I’m not so sure. Let’s hope Shogun has better cardio than when he faced Coleman.. cause that was a joke.

but yes he IS going down, lol.
by SoCalStunNa on Apr 18, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno. But I see him give up to easy most times. The Rich Franklin fight, he gave up, and hardly fought. The Gouveia fight he tapped to strikes… The Maia and sorta the Leben fight is the only time I’ve seen him show heart. But, in the Maia fight it showed he’s not an intelligent fighter, having a crazy size and reach advantage ont he feet, and continually going down with Maia.
Regardless, I’d like to take back my statement with calling him a pussy. I just don’t really like him.
And if Leites wins, it will ONLY be because of an Arm-triangle.

Kinda of a dick thing to say. Chuck help made the sport- if not for him Kimbo might be the king of MMA. Chuck never let his game evolve and to an extent that is respectable but he could never catch up. Shogun will never be a top 205 in the UFC without soccer kicks, so he can fight a top 5 205er and get destroyed.
by Ennis on Apr 18, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
dude, shogun never really needed the soccer kicks to win fights, he just liked FINISHING fights that way because the public loved it (I still do!), that’s the thing about shogun and wandy, they fight for us, to give a good show. I’ve been a Shogun fan ever since he began destroying ppl here in Brazil, I never been that much of a Chuck fan, but I do acknowledge his input in the sport. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean I can’t be happy for my boy Shogun, had he lost tonight he would most likely get cut and now he’s 100%, just wait dude, he’ll get the title from machida (the future title). had shogun lost tonight you’d be doing the same thing, so just let us have our fun, when shogun fights again you can start your smack talk again :P

Anderson can’t help but be frustrated by Leites. He’s fading sideways, then going to his back for most of the fight. Silva is finally picking Leites apart. I imagine if the Cote fight continued it would’ve been much of the same.

Seriously- you know you’ve lost every round, you have nothing to lose (except maybe consciousness)but what the hell go for it! Go down in blaze of glory, anything but that throwing yourself on the ground shit. It’s just a measure of how outclassed Leites is in this fight.
Silva needs to start fighting at 205 on a regular basis and check out what’s there for him. Besides a Marquardt rematch, all other fights at 185 are pointless and will look similar to this. Silva will lose his marketability. Who wants to watch this shit again?

Trouble is there ain’t anyone else who’s legitimate.
by TheIlluminati on Apr 19, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, that isn’t the trouble. What kind of SUPPOSEDLY P4P best can’t make it an exciting fight by finishing his opponent. If a guy doesn’t engage against GSP he gets destroyed. Gsp is a complete fighter and would have jumped on Leites and pounded him out. I laugh at the comments that Andy will destroy GSP. It’s the other way around, GSP will be able to take him down at will and pass his gaurd like he has passed every other black belts gaurd. All that crap about Silva getting bored is bullshit, he was scared to engage and get KOed by Cote and he was scared to get submitted by Leites. He will be terrified of getting taken down and mauled by GSP’s amazing top controle and GnP. Silva has only shined when foolish fighter rushed in and he could counter strike. Silva gets frustrated very easy and GSP is the king at frustrating his opponents. I always thought GSP would beat Silva, but now I know he will make him look bad. Anderson can’t fight when a fight doesn’t go his way and GSP makes the fight go his way. How can people put Silva ahead of GSP and Fedor on the P4P list when he looks like shit against guys like Cote and Leites and they are destroying guys like BJ and AA. GSP has never wasted his time in fighting guys like Luter, Leben and Irvin. I don’t think I could sit through another lame boring fight of the Spider’s.

The booing was more than justified, that was the lamest fight I even seen.

I don’t disagree, but am bout sick and tired of hearing about the “canadian fan”.
They boo any fighter that happens to be opposite a Canadian fighter. I don’t have a problem with that by the way, they are simply being loyal countrymen. I have a problem when everyone goes apenuts when American fans do the same.

This is probably the most boring title fight I’ve ever seen. I mean WTF is silva doing, it’s obvious Leites has no answer for him and is just looking to go to a decision. I dunno maybe I’m just being a dumb drunk but Silva just needs to go balls to the wall and KO this kid.

Silva did not impress in his last 2 fights now. He doesn’t look as invincible as he used to.

damn … people….. maybe he is just trying to earn a paycheck for once
by Gweedo on Apr 19, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, I’d rather say Silva’s last two opponents didn’t have the balls to engage therefore the last 2 fights weren’t impressive (Much less Cote than Leites IMO, I didn’t the Cote fight was that bad). Silva is counter striker. Give the man a strike and you will see action. Throw yourself on the ground for 5 rounds straight knowing damn well he’s not taking the bait = not so much action.
by DSmith on Apr 19, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cote was engaging more than Silva was and he has way bigger balls than Silva, because he wasn’t the one that was scared to get KOed. You can’t blame it on the way the other guy fights. One could easily say Silva was a pussy for not jumping on Leites every time he want to the ground. What kind of P4P best can’t take the fight where he wants it.
by Gord on Apr 19, 2009 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
After watching Silva past 2 fights I’m gonna find it hard to even consider him P4P best or even 2nd best. After his past 2 fights I put him #3 behind Fedor and GSP. And before tonight I would say Silva would best GSP but after these past 2 fights, GSP will destroy Silva and I will bet my house and entire life savings on it. GSP is faster, stronger his striking is on par with Silvas.
by rydinlow on Apr 19, 2009 12:52 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would have to agree with you,it’s like he can not pull the trigger. There was several times I found myself saying GSP would be killing him right now.But styles make matches and he might be a little more willing to open up on GSP,but I can not see Anderson stopping GSP takedowns.
by scott on Apr 19, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You would NOT consider him the best p4p because he has completely ran through all of the competition in his division until there is just nothing left for him to do? That’s a bit weird don’t you think? GSP still has some work to do at 170, BJ has ALOT to clear out at 155 and out of the bunch I would consider Fedor the biggest dodger of solid competition. You can’t fault a man for fighting until there is nothing left. If his name was Tito we’d still be waiting for Silva/Franklin 2.
by DSmith on Apr 19, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What are you talking about? GSP has destroyed all the top WWs except Alves. Silva has beat a bunch of cans and 3 top MWs. Silva has plenty left, the new (much better)Marquart, Maia and even Cote with 2 good legs.
by Gord on Apr 19, 2009 2:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rydinlow….Please dont bet your house and life savings on GSP….This was pathetic….Leites is awful as i stated previously…….You never know if Silva played possum to set up the GSP fight or was told to take it easy on Leites or even bet on himself going to a decision…..I think we all know Silva couldve Destroyed Thales in the first 2 min, but for some “REASON” he just didn’t……Dont bet the farm cuz that would truly be unfortunate….

by kitsunex on Apr 19, 2009 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Silva only looked good against Leben because Leben was very aggressive and made mistakes. A counterstriker is only as exciting as his opponents. I think Cote and Leites tried to to Silva what Evans did to Chuck: make the counterstriker frustrated and come after them, throw him off his game plan and hope he makes mistakes.

that’s a big if, but he didn’t say anything about injuries in his interview with rogan. if the crowd is booing so much and he really was injured, I’m sure he’d have mentioned it to save him a few fans. I’m still a fan, but seriously, I will not watch him fight another mid-level fighter. he’s the champ, I know that it’s the challenger’s duty to take the belt from the champ, but if the challenger is just standing there not doing much the champ needs to put him away of misery. I’m really disappointed in anderson, I used to be a big fan and did not want him to retire, now I can see why he wants to.
by orcus on Apr 19, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

oh no, I’m talking about the interview after the fight, you know, the one where 90% of canadians were booing?
by orcus on Apr 19, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im not going to be hard against Silva. Thales never had any business being in there with him.
If his opponents dont have the ability to fight him and are afraid to engage, how is that Silvas fault? Why should he charge in and play to opponents strengths. You people all miss the point. He won. Easily. No issue at all. Again.
Remember, the better the competition, the ‘better’ Anderson you will see.
My view is the middleweight division is done with Anderson. Realistically no-one will come close to beating him. In his last few fights UFC might as well do the super fights. GSP seems popular, and maybe a couple of 205 fights. Although I still dont see Anderson losing in any against anyone.
by UK_Chris on Apr 19, 2009 1:04 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs

by ActionJackson on Apr 19, 2009 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Leites didn’t have anything Silva wanted…. Silva had what Leites wanted however, the belt. Leited didn’t do anything to go after it, so his loss.

so when tim sylvia does it he’s garbage but anderson silva can fight to not lose all he wants and it’s other people’s faults? WHACK
by ActionJackson on Apr 19, 2009 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well Thales couldn’t do squat. And he lost. Flopping on the floor every time Silva came close isnt a fight, or skill, period.
Not only that, his famed BJJ which was supposed to be far ahead of Silvas was nothing but talk, because even when he did have Silva down, he couldnt do squat there either.
If anyone is to blame for this fight, its the UFC matchmakers. Like I say, Thales never had any business being in there with Silva, just what were they and everyone thinking would happen?
by UK_Chris on Apr 19, 2009 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I 100% cosign with UK Chris. There is simply nothing left for Anderson to do at MW and that is not his fault.

Why is everybody acting like chuck has a weak chin? Rashad would have knocked anyone out with that right he hit chuck with and Shit shogun came runnin with a looping haymaker while chuck was almost standing still trying to throw a left hook. Chuck shouldn’t have even tried to go for that punch and circle away. His reactions are not there anymore, Hate to see him go out like this, but i think its best for him.

“dance, shuck, and jive” – perfect description of that digrace of a performace from A. Silva.
Leites was terrible as well. I drop 45 bones for fights, I expect some scrappin, not some bum spread eagle waitin to be penetrated for 25 minutes.

I almost didn’t get this PPV but then I thought you got Shogun vs Liddell and Anderson Silva this could be a good PPV so I bought it. As they say hindsight is 20/20. This was a waste of 45 dollars, even in a losing effort I was more excited watching Liddell fight at least he wasn’t afraid to “try” and win. I’ve always been a Silva fan but after these last two fights I don’t know anymore. I understand he wants to keep the belt but at no point in this fight did I think he was going to beat Leites or vice versa. I could rant all night about how disappointed this was but I’ll just look and the one positive. We may be finally getting to see the Shogun we’ve been waiting to see.

I won my first two picks of the Main Card but lost everything else.
IMO, Wiman got robbed.
Chuck…. damn.
I did pick a Leites upset. Damn I feel dumb. But there is NO excuse for Anderson to not have finished that fight. Once he saw that Thales wouldn’t even throw a punch, he should/could have finished him on his feet. Once Anderson got top position on the ground, and opened up, Thales covered up like a bitch. Those few punches bloodied up his nose and eye. Anderson could have finished it then. IMO, BOTH were waiting for a decision.
I do not think Anderson is the best P4P fighter anymore. Once shiddy performance, ok I’ll give that to you. Two in a row? Not a chance. I think it goes Fedor, GSP, BJ, Anderson. At least BJ tried to fight back in a loss.
If the GSP fight happens, then great, go GSP. But I really think Anderson should permenantly move to 205, where guys like Rampage, Rashad, Vera, and even Forrest would not be too scared to strike with him. EVERYONE at 185 is SCARED of Silva, and doesn’t fight. But its also Silva’s fault for not exploiting that weakness and killing everyone in front of him!
Very frustrating night for an event I was the most excited to see.

Love how this has been proving how weak the WEC is…
Look how Condit & Cantwell got beat, and if you include Chael Sonnen (how should have got the belt after pathetic Filho’s tricks to keep the belt by missing weight for fight) that makes three WEC champs who couldn’t win against average or slightly better UFC competition!!!
So much for trying to make people think those losers could stand up to UFC competition!!!
