Dana White: Chuck Liddell needs to 'dazzle me' at UFC 97 to keep fighting

Props: Canadian Press
Quoteworthy:
"I've made it very clear to Chuck. Very clear. It's not about money, it's not about this, that. Chuck is one of my good friends. Chuck (has) cemented his legacy in the UFC and in the fight game. I'm not even saying if he wins, unless he looks incredibly impressive (in Montreal) - I mean, he's going to have to go out there and dazzle me, for me to want Chuck to still fight. I love him, and I don't want to see what I saw in his last fight ever again."
UFC President Dana White has an interesting take on the future of his good friend -- and perhaps still his biggest draw -- former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. "Iceman" got iced bad his last time out, sustaining a vicious knockout courtesy of Rashad Evans at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" in September 2008. It marked the third loss in four fights for the San Luis Obispo, Calif., resident and the second brutal knockout during that span. He next fights former Pride FC wrecking machine Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the co main event at UFC 97: "Redemption" from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, on April 18. It should be interesting to see how the cool and calm Liddell responds to White turning up the heat while he's possibly in the twilight of his legendary career. Hmmm ....

shogun has all the talent in the world, he just lacks cardio, cardio is something you can improve in a few months, talent isnt… chuck is outmatched here and will lose a decision
by brendan on Mar 14, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, true brendan. but you can’t work on your cardio overnight. Chuck may be older, but IMO he’s more well-conditioned to last 3 rounds and rain those bombs away!
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 15, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
I could also say that about Chuck. But I think Chuck is lacking the hunger. Shogun is not that good IMO. Its a big difference fighting Japanese LHW’s who probably cut no weight to fight.
by JV on Mar 15, 2009 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s more than just cardio, it’s his whole physique..
by RoB on Mar 15, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions
shogun knows his fitness was the problem against coleman and he has been working on it + this fight will likely be a stand up war which is less taxing on the cardio than someone constantly taking you down and lying on top of you
i think shogun has a better skill set than chuck but i can’t see him knocking chuck out
shogun by decision
by ufcaddict on Mar 15, 2009 7:17 AM EDT up reply actions
good post UFCaddict. like you said, stand up fights are less taxing. This isnt wanderlei that chuck is fighting…chuck wont DARE try to take a ground wizard like shogun down like he did to wanderlei.
I agree that Shogun will win a decision, but I could also c Chuck being taken down, outclassed and submitted. yeah, yeah, I know…chuck’s td defense is legendary, but thats against wrestling takedowns. I dont know how well chuck will be able to defend Shogun’s crafty ju jitsu trips. If this fight goes to the ground, chuck has no shot at surviving!
by john on Mar 15, 2009 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I’d say Chuck by decision – Shogun was far from impressive in his last few fights. Coleman was a target which Shogun couldn’t take out. However, I would say that this will be Chuck’s last fight as his best days are far from over. It is called age….something none of us can do to combat when you are fighting someone almost half your age.
by deadgrassinyeard on Mar 15, 2009 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions
no, and chucky really hasn’t got that much of a shot at winning standing up.. Shogun’s technique is so much better than Chuck’s his kicks, kness, punches and all of that is gonna be too much!

NEWS:
bj penn has officially LOST the plot!
he said he didnt accept the fight in germany (with ken flo) because he doesnt get as much money overseas because ppl dont buy ppv as much
he is also trying to get GSP suspended for the greasing incident and therefore that would result in GSP/Alves fight being delayed!!
does this guy not realise how hated he is becoming… i have lost all respect for him!

I was excited to see the “old” Shogun return in his last fight against Coleman. It was set up perfectly for it too, with Coleman gassing about 3 minutes into the fight. I thought Shogun was going to finish him in spectacular fashion, but instead he couldn’t finish a guy that had no defense to getting hit until controversially with less than half a minute left in the fight. His cario looked terrible, and until I see him perform like we used to see in Pride, I just can’t believe the “old” Shogun is back. If his cardio really has improved I see Chuck winning a decision, but if he looks like he did against Coleman he’s getting knocked out. I don’t know how much Liddell has left, but I think he’s got more left than we’ve been seeing from Shogun lately.

i dont think he’ll go as far as kicking him out but it might be a possibility if he gets brutally knocked out like he did against rashad but if he losses by decision i think he’ll carry on in the ufc

I’d love to pick Shogun to win this fight but until he shows some sort of glimpse of his Pride self I just can’t do it. He should have steamrolled Griffin and he should have retired Coleman and he put out 2 dissappointing performances. I’m tired of waiting for the old Shogun to show himself. I think Chuck still has some good fights left in him and I think he knows that this is his last chance to mount some momentum for a final shot at the title. A win over Shogun would definitely be a strong step in the right direction. I really hope Shogun comes out strong and destroys Chuck but I won’t hold my breath for that to happen.
Liddell via TKO 3rd round.
by Buster Bluth on Mar 15, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I think they both need to dazzle in this fight to justify the big contracts both of them have. It adds a little drama to this fight. Shogun needs to put on a good performance. We know he was hurt in the Forrest fight and he was rusty in the Coleman fight, but this fight he has to prove that he can regain top, Pride killing machine form. If he puts on another lackluster, poor performance than I don’t think we’ll ever see the old Shogun again, at least not in the UFC. Chuck needs this fight to prove he can still compete with top level fighters. Who wants to see Chuck fight Joe Shmo? We all pay to see Chuck fight contenders, and if he looses this fight it will be hard to put him in there against top competitioin. I’m picking Chuck in this fight by either decision or 3rd round TKO.
by DB on Mar 15, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I think shogun is going down in this fight. He hasnt done anything to impress me. Neither has chuck….so i think i’m just taking into account their cardio. if shogun shows up in horrible cardio shape. chuck might eek it out the TKO or even the KO.

by Bluepit on Mar 15, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Chuck will still be in the UFC because he is going to kick the piss out of Shogun. Everyone thinks that Chuck is done because of his last few performances. If that is what we are basing a fighter on, then Shogun is the next Ken Shamrock. Coleman was the only person at 205 that Shogun could have beat in his last fight. He didn’t look close to top 20. I thought the submission and poor performance against Forrest was a fluke, but he looked even worse in his win against a dead on his feet dinosaur in Coleman. Shogun would need to be a completely new person from that night to even make it to the second round against Chuck. I don’t think 3 months is nearly enough, especially without a litle “help”.
by naturalshadow on Mar 15, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly, a little help (steroids). To bad for Showgun they are illegal in the UFC and he will never be the same without them.

JV… you said there is a big difference between fighting Japanese LHW’s..? Not sure what you mean.
Shogun fought the likes of Arona, Overeem (twice), Jackson, Little Nog, Randleman..
Sure he fought some average japanese fighters in Pride but he did what he should have done to them in those fights.

I said it last year….Chuck vs Wandy should have been both fighters last fight…..Glad to see Dana say something about this…..not that Chuck can’t win but he has looked real slow, with no knock out power and has developed a glass jaw….not good. This is coming from a Chuck fan then again Shogun is one of my favorites as well and still only 26, so we’ll see
by Robert(1) on Mar 14, 2009 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

by Robert(1) on Mar 15, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions
there’s a difference from what rashad did, and what rampage did. he was OUT when sugar hit him, he started to defend when rampage hit him, and was up right away. and so what if jardine dropped him, he didn’t finish him
by ufcfanatic23 on Mar 15, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I undertstand all that and if it was any other of fighter fine but that never happened to him before and now it’s every fight he seems to be in trouble and he is getting older with slower punches…that means to me he might be up?
by Robert(1) on Mar 15, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually Overeem dropped him pretty good, and so did Metzger. The thing is, at that time, he could just shake it off in a second and then knock the guy who hit him into the cheap seats. I think that style of fighting can take its toll and soften a chin. At the same time, I think it is a bit silly for people to claim that Chuck has a “Glass Jaw”. Rashad gave Chuck his only legit KO, and that was a hard punch, right on the button, as Chuck was swinging for the fences himself. I don’t know if any chin would have held up to that.
by naturalshadow on Mar 15, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

by GregC on Mar 15, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Getting knocked down doesnt mean “glass jaw” I know Rampage TKO’d him but it wasnt one punch. Page dropped him and then had to finish on the ground. Thats not a “glass jaw” IMO.
by JV on Mar 15, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions
When Chuck was running through the pack, he was not facing heavy handed fighters. Tito, Babalu x2, Randy x2, does not pose big KO threats on their feet. Now Chuck is facing KO punchers while being slower then he used to be.
Wanderlei did drop Chuck, it was very brief, not close to a KO at all.

You guys are missing the point. Love him or hate him, the Iceman is one of the sport’s pioneers. He helped to make MMA huge and should be allowed to fight as long as he damn well pleases. There are countless guys currently fighting in the UFC who are absolutely painful to watch and don’t dazzle anybody, ever (Justin Mccully, Lietes, O’Brien, Coleman, Chonan,Okami, 2/3’s of the TUF guys)just to name a few.Chuck’s always been a “yes” man, and never bites the hand that feeds him like many fighters do(and should do). Dana shouldn’t call out Chuck like that. That’s pretty F*cked up if you ask me. So the guys lost a few fights, so what. He still does and always has put it all on the line for the fans.
by Josh H. on Mar 14, 2009 11:23 PM EDT reply actions
No one’s missing the point, as painful as it is to watch the fighter’s that don’t dazzle anyone it’s even more painful to watch a legend like Liddell take a beating and even more scary to see him KO’d like he was in the Liddell VS Evans fight. Fighters should be allowed to fight as long as they’re healthy and able to compete at a high level. Chuck can probably still do that, but he’s obviously detoriating and eventually he won’t be able to keep up with arguably the deepest division in the UFC and he’ll have to go elsewhere to find competition that is a step down to be competitive. I think we’ll find out this next fight exactly where Liddell is. D White is not being a prick, they’re good friends, White is sincerely worried about Liddell’s safety, it’s not like he’s calling him out. D White can be a real prick, but I think he’s sincere when speaking about Liddell.

When I seen Chuck sprawled out on the canvas in the Evans fight, my heart dropped. It seemed like he was laid out for an eternity. As much as I like seeing Chuck fight, Chuck needs to ask himself, how bad does he really want it? Is there really anything left, the drive, the hunger that made him the great fighting champion that he is? No question about it, Chuck is in the twilight of his career.
With that said, I still feel he has all the tools to still beat Shogun at this stage in both of their careers. But how much heart does Liddell have left?

I have always felt that top level MMA is progressing much faster than most sports. It may plateu at some point, but right now, I think we are seeing it literally blow past some of these guys.
For example, if you put some of the NBA’s past greats up agains todays best it would still be competitive, MMA won’t be able to say that for a while IMO.

The point from Dana isnt that Chuck is of no use to him if he loses. They are friends. Dana is looking out for Chucks health and well being. Thats what he meant by his last sentence. He doesnt want to see his friend crumbled to the canvas. It was a hard KO and he’s slower and older now. It has nothing to do with him selling tickets. Read the last sentence again with that context and you will see what I mean. Of course I could be way off.

Dana’s quote is reverse psychology… However I see SHOGUN winning this fight… Those who have been watching the sport, know Shogun has so much more talent then Rashads, Jacksons, Jardines, Couture, and Horns bitch Liddell…
Shogun knows he performed horrible in his fight with Coleman, knows what to improve in, and so does everyone else that has been posting comments CARDIO… However about 95% of posts don’t degrade his talent which consist of Muay Thai, black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing…
Ice consist of kickboxing, wrestling, and boxing…
Shogun is the new main attraction for Dana White… His first fight in the UFC with Griffen was his 3 loss since 2006 and that was do to an accident.
Ice’s last loss before his Evans fight was back in 2007 against Jardine…
The facts are there, Shogun by punchs…

Beaver, are you serious? Chuck not a crowd favorite? Half of regular joe mma fans only watch a card if Chuck is on it. He is still the most loved fighter in mma. You ask any guy on the street who they have heard of in mma, they say chuck liddell. Or ask their favorite, they’ll say liddell. And he’ll continue to be a draw because people want to see him succeed. Whatever it is about him, people pull and cheer for him. He is well paid, but for his fights, the ufc and dana banks. I like Dana, but everyone gets knocked out. What Dana said is disloyal to someone who has always been very very loyal to dana and the ufc.

I’m sorry people, but so many of you are so quick to jump on fighters for loosing a few fights to the elite fighters and being called has beens. lets not forget that Chuck wasn’t always winning all his fights. he gets the belt he goes on a win streak defending it, and then goes on a shitte run. Think about all his fights in none of them was he dominated, he got caught everyone does, thats the sport, but that doesn’t make anyone a has-been. Kos just lost 2/3 is he done? What if GSP got caught by Kos after the first Serra fight…would he be a has-been. Not to mention Couture who got KO back to back by Chuck and EVERYONE though he was done… few years later he is champ, and he is the greatest again. I can go for days talking about people that were labeled has-been and then were right back in the picture after a few wins. So everyone need to calm down, and dont start sending people packing until they actually don’t look like they belong in there.
having said that Chuck really need a win

Wow, it is amazing how quick fans will jump ship when their fighter is in a slump. i see chuck winning this by cornering shogun and swinging for the fences. Chuck Liddell does not want to retire, i think we will see him with that old look in his eyes. shogun put that poison in his body while he fought in pride, and it is showing here in the ufc. chuck by tko late second round.

Chuck should stun the world and get rid of the Mohawk.
Even more stunning would be if he showed some fancy footwork.
by DubNub on Mar 15, 2009 7:56 AM EDT reply actions
yea he needs to pull out that Liddell vs Couture 2 footwork
by Chadx23 on Mar 15, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Liddell will win by KO and hopefully send “zero cardio” Rua outta the ufc.

If Chuck loses, I think even he will know it’s time.
The Evans fight ended badly, but Chuck was winning the fight until the KO. He looked alright against Wandy, but I think that says more for the fact that Wandy is done. And I think he was just looking past Jardine.
I’m still giving the guy the benefit of the doubt. I’ve never been a big fan of Chuck, that punchers chance has blessed the guy.
Now for Shogun, it’s obvious where his issues lie. Can he make complete turnaround in the time since the Coleman fight? There were times in that fight that I though Coleman could have taken it. Considering the pedastal that Shogun is put on by fans, that’s scary. And at this point, even beating Chuck, unless it’s by one hell of a KO or submission, isn’t going to change my mind. I don’t think he can beat any of the top LHWs. Even Jardine would thrash him.

shogun will not have the same success in America like he did in japan.these are the reasons why,no knees to the head of a downed opponent,no head stomps or soccer kicks to downed opponent and last but not least there is drug screening in America and that means NO ROIDS for shogun!I would love to see Rampage get his revenege and whip Slogun azz.In America shogun is a middle class fighter and not one of the best.I looking for Chuck to blast his face in.This aint gonna be a Coleman reply!
by SluggerCitySoldier on Mar 15, 2009 9:20 AM EDT reply actions
If Chuck beats Rua, I could see them feeding Shogun to Rampage and then sending him packing.

Chuck has proven himself as a great character, great fighter, and great for the UFC. He can loose a few fights and it won’t change anything in my books.
On the other hand Shogun, the second coming of the Messaih (sp?) has been way less than impressive. And for a guy that didn’t have to cut weight or anything to fight against a pathetic has been like Coleman, well all I could say is SEND HIM PACKING CHUCK!!
Fighters like Shogun are bad for the UFC, not Chuck. Are you listening Dana?
by UFC Champ on Mar 15, 2009 9:36 AM EDT reply actions
I always here on here that friendship shouldnt interfere with business!!!! That is exactly what is happening here, unfortunately Dana has the power here, but it should be chuck decision to make! He has already said on numerous occasions he will stop fighting when he feels he is being beat up for 3 rounds, nobody to date has done that.
Chucks losses were unfortunate to say the least, and it all started with getting caught from rampage, then a very close decision to jardine where chuck clearly never prepared right. He then demolished wandi in a war and was winning the evans fight before simply getting caught, to say this is do or die is terrible from dana, and iv always been a supporter of dana.
There is no way on earth friendship or not should dana have said this, totally disrespectful and places more pressure on chuck to open in a fight he cant afford to lose. Why the fuck does he have to be “dazzling”?? Why cant he grind out a win if he needs to? Fucking wrong man!!!!!!!!!!!
by mo on Mar 15, 2009 9:42 AM EDT reply actions
agreed.chuck has lost to five guys in his career 2 of which he redeemed(randy, horn). page2 wasn’t even a fight, jardine wins by putting a red mark on chucks leg and looks like the elephant man’s son after the fight and rashad “dancing with the stars”evans is lucky chuck fights with his wallet(gets like 3 or 4 dollars for every ppv).boos come out hands go down to get things going.only problem chuck and us never saw shad ever ko someone with his hands.

Whether Chuck does good or not, I don’t believe the UFC will get rid of Chuck. Like it said, Chuck is still one of the most watched, and still draws in lots of money. If they get rid of Liddell, someone will pick him up the very next day, and they company would sky rocket. UFC isn’t going to let him go.
by E. Fairway on Mar 15, 2009 10:18 AM EDT reply actions
dana has said that he would keep w. silva around as long as he wants to fight, but chuck who along with randy and tito created the modern era ufc needs to impress? garbage.
by kmoney on Mar 15, 2009 10:19 AM EDT reply actions
wandys exciting simple as that. and dana just let his ego take over when he got rid of tito. the only reason dana wants to get rid of chuck is hes scared for his health.

Do you guys think Shogan can make a come back?
He was just about the most dynamic fighter in Pride. Now, he just looks tired. He isn’t old.
by DubNub on Mar 15, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions
Dynamic with the juice!! It takes years to get back to normal after steriod use. Coleman should have had cardio for days going to 205.
by fnuts on Mar 15, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Chuck needs to rely on more MMA instead of just relying on his fists. I thought the two takedowns he did won him the Wandy fight. He seems to not even throw kicks anymore. Chuck is 38 at that point you can’t just rely on reflex, you need more tools and technique. Just my thoughts. Also train somewhere other than the pit. Often times guys who jump around get a much better skill set than the same old shit all the time. At this point in Chuck’s career what can Hackleman teach or tell him that he hasn’t done or said a million times already.
by WARMMA on Mar 15, 2009 12:03 PM EDT reply actions
Power is the last thing to go! Chuck still has it! He didn’t look slower last time out, either! It’s Chuck’s ring game that has been absent! He needs patience and good footwork! Rua is well rounded and has a good chin! But, I think Liddell is gonna send him a lulliby in Montreal! Thanks, Dana!
by Dana's a crossdresser on Mar 15, 2009 12:49 PM EDT reply actions
Shogug sucks! Everybody likes this guy and I cant figure it out. Its obvious that he used to be on something when he was in Pride. Blood doping or something. This dude use to blow thru 10 min rounds like it was nothing. Now he cant make it out of the first without gassing. Coleman was old and slow and he still had problems. The only chance Shogun has is dropping to 185 and getting in shape cus the top 205ers are gonna put him away. Hell, Forrest put him away, and hes not a finisher.
by Bobby on Mar 15, 2009 1:26 PM EDT reply actions
Chuck is good but very one dimention, can’t ever see him getting his belt back again and I’m pretty sure he isn’t going to dazzle dana.
by raff on Mar 15, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions
Styles make fights, with that being said who knows whats going to happen. If either guy loses there stock will drop pretty bad, so it really is a must win for either of these guys, more so for chuck.
by raff on Mar 15, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions
I think Chuck’s place in the UFC should not be in question yet.
He should have won from Jardine but losing to Rampage and Evans can happen!
by mmarkk on Mar 15, 2009 2:26 PM EDT reply actions
doesn’t chuck have the most KO wins, longest knock out streak (7) and the most wins in the ufc than any other fighter, correct me if im wrong but doesn’t he.
by Blazy J on Mar 15, 2009 2:29 PM EDT reply actions
Liddell is nowhere being done; he has had some bad luck and fought against some hungary opponents; Liddell will dazzle and soon we wil see him in a title shot; its time fr some of the other fighters to hit some slumps; sho gun sucks to be you; people need to rememeber when Liddell is pinned against the wall; he comes out electrifying hint his fight with wanderlai
Go Liddell Go Liddell Go Liddell
Liddell beats sho gun the beats Griffin then fights machida for title after machida beats evans and rampage

I did not read all the comments but looks like most are picking shogun I guess they have not seen him fight since he got off steroids. This guy looks like a bum I can’t think of one fighter that he can beat in that division. If he don’t knock Chuck out in the first 3 min he has know chance to win.I think chuck will Knock him out late 2nd round. Hopefully chuck will retire after that.
If Chuck don’t retire White should push for a regular TV contract and Head line the fights with Chuck ,Randy And some of the Lightweihts and feed them guys they should beat to build a fan base.It would work not for real fans ,but people that never watch before would love it The world tuned in to watch Kimbo and he is a complete Bum.

Can’t call this one, but even if Chuck wins I think it’s time to hang’em up. I hate seeing the Iceman getting dropped.

Come on guys , Chuck may be old yes but I would not say this fight is an open and shut case, lets just remember chuck is a counter fighter …..he got knocked out by evans and jackson because he did not fight as a counter fighter …..some people are just haters….if he doesnt push the pace and fights patiently I would not be suprised to see him come away with the TKO here lets just remember also shoguns style was far more suited to the pride ring and rules
by bitterwisted on Mar 15, 2009 8:38 PM EDT reply actions
Chuck has good foot work. He simply needs to learn to keep his hands up. He cant rely on his reflexes like he did in his youth. The question is: ‘Is it too late for this dog to learn something new’?
He should also give his brain a chance to heal from the nasty bruises its sustained in his last few fights. After one of those kinds of knockouts it takes at least a year to recover. That’s why its been so easy to knock him out since Rampage paved the way.
by c on Mar 15, 2009 10:06 PM EDT reply actions
Shogun has always looked sloppy in his fights. I have seen most of his Pride fights and he always has looked gassed and always puts his hands down. I must admit he looks way worse now but he never looked like he was in 100% in shape. I say that if he can just keep his hands up for all 3 rounds he has a good chance of wining the fight. A couple of kicks, knees and punches to the body in the first round and Chuck will be ready for a KO in the second round.
by danny_c on Mar 16, 2009 1:02 AM EDT reply actions
I got chuck TKO in the second, well i hope that happens or it could turn into a slow and boring fight as both will struggle in the third.
by bispingmwchamp on Mar 16, 2009 6:40 AM EDT reply actions
I hate to see guys get KO’D let alone when its one of your favorites like Chuck. Im with Dana I hated seeing it but Rashad is just better than Chuck now!!!
by Spyder on Mar 16, 2009 11:44 AM EDT reply actions
Shogun has sucked in the UFC, some guys can’t make the transfer to the UFC, (Cro-Cop) not to say they wouldn’t have kept dominating in Pride, but I think wrestling and physical strength (holding against the cage etc) play a bigger role in the UFC, Wanderlei never woulda been a champ if he stayed in the UFC his whole career. Shogun minus kicks to downed opponents = guy who will never be a UFC champ. Chuck will win.
