UFC Fight Night 18: Martin Kampmann preparing for war against Carlos Condit

Props: MMA Fanhouse
Quoteworthy:
I think it's going to be a war. It's going to be a great fight. He's a tough guy and I'm just going to get in there and try to punch him in the face, and he's going to try to do the same to me. It should be a great fight. He's good at a lot of things. He's dangerous on the ground, he's got good submissions off his back, he's got dangerous knees and kicks. I pretty much know what I have to look out for. No matter who you fight in the UFC it's going to be a tough fight and anything can happen. Everybody's tough in the UFC and Carlos Condit is definitely tough. [Dropping to 170] is an easy cut. Not tough at all. I'm pretty light right now so the cut shouldn't be any problem.
Hard-hitting UFC welterweight Martin Kampmann breaks down his main event match at UFC Fight Night 18: "Condit vs. Kampmann," featuring the Octagon debut of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Welterweight Champion and top-ranked 170-pound fighter Carlos Condit. The SpikeTV telecast is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET on April 1 from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Gonna have to go with Kampmann here, I think Condit’s been ducking UFC competition for a while now, content to sit at sub par WEC level and hang on to the belt. But, I can’t really say I dislike the guy, so if he proves me wrong, thats fine too.

You know McArthur, it’s funny how you can be one of my favorite bloggers when it seems like we almost never agree.

this is a very tough fight to call. unless 1 fighter is a significant dog, I dont see to many people betting $ on this fight. I like both fighters, I dont really know who to root for, but I have a feeling that Carlos will surprise a lot of people.

I think I’m leaning towards Kampmann right now…but this fight has a lot of question marks so it’s hard to make a prediction. We’ve never seen Kampmann at 170 and we’ve never seen Condit in the UFC.
Either way…a win would put either one on the UFC welterweight map. I say the winner gets a crack at one of the AKA trio.

Buster, Kampmann has had 1 fight at 170 and he won, 2nd round TKO. He looks good at 170, it’s not much of a cut since he never cut to fight at 185!

Oh right…forgot about that…sorry dudes. It’s still a hard fight to predict in my opinion but I will predict a war as Kampmann does. These guys are equally good standing and on the ground so no matter where this fight takes place it should be a fairly even battle. Condit coming over to the UFC has been a long time coming.

Doesnt Carlos train with Greg Jackson? If he works his way up to a title shot would he fight GSP, or will this be another case of camp butt buddies refusing to fight each other?
by DAVE on Mar 12, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions
he is from New Mexico but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t train with jackson
by McArthur on Mar 12, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I saw a video the other day of Carlos and he definatly wasn’t at Jackson’s gym. If I remember correctly he bounces from gym to gym.

I tried to post a link, but you can go to pure fight .org if you want to see it.

kampmann won his first fight at 170 in dominating fashion homie

I’m kind of torn. I’ve always had my eye on Kampmann because he possess some real ability. I just don’t know about Condit. He could be a genuine @ss kicker or another UFC flameout. This is a tough fight to call, but I’m going to pull for Condit hoping that he can be an @ss kicker that can give GSP some problems down the road.
by RealDrew on Mar 12, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
at only 24 years old, If Condit isn’t alreday an a$$ kicker, he will be in the future
by DAVE on Mar 12, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions
i am also looking forward to this fight!!i think kampmann will be the winner in a dominant fashion.
by NM on Mar 12, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I dont know I think kampman will beat him but not sure this is great to see how carlos does in the ufc he is ranked #9 in ww we will see if that is true
by The Philicutioner on Mar 12, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions
True enough, but imo Condit will never hold a belt again.
by The Sexicutioner on Mar 12, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I second that, he won’t have another belt
by The Rexicutioner on Mar 12, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Wrong, Condit is going to step it up and come in with the right mindset although there is the curse of the UFC Debut

Am I the only one that finds this funny?
by Victory is Ours on Mar 12, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions
I got Kampmann winning this one. I would love to see him put a few good wins together and get a title shot by early next year. He is good everywhere and has an iron jaw. I don’t know what happened agaisn’t Nate, but I think he just started a little too slow and paid for it. This is a much better weight and he should be a top contender soon.
by BNF on Mar 12, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions
Agreed. I’d love to see Kampmann welcome Condit to the UFC w/ an @$$ kicking!
by LJ on Mar 12, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions
If Condit fights like his last fight it is almost certain.
by BNF on Mar 12, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Now Condit becomes a gatekeeper I bet.
by O damn he got caught on Mar 12, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions
maybe…kids only 24 years old though with a record of 22-4…not too shabby
by McArthur on Mar 12, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
True. It will be interesting to see how he fares w/ the next level of competition though. Brock Larson is a UFC dropout, and I can’t even remember half the other guys names that he has fought. I guess the reason that I’m rooting against him, is that he seemed a little too arrogant for a guy that hadn’t fought in the UFC w/ the best WW’s in the world.
by LJ on Mar 12, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Thats the thing though, he can be an exciting fighter, but a champion?? I don’t think so, everyone in the WW division is doomed to run into the brick wall that is GSP; if he gets through Alves, then maybe the next big fight would be Anthony Johnson (assuming he keeps improving his game) not many people have the physical tools needed to deal with George let alone the skills.

Has there ever been a case where a fighter went up or down from his natural fighting weight and became a better fighter? Natural weight in the sense of whatever weight he was always fighting at….I can’t recall any? Guys….
by Robert(1) on Mar 12, 2009 5:11 PM EDT reply actions
Not that he’s a great fighter…but Joe Riggs
by Couchchamp on Mar 12, 2009 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ve been waiting for Carlos to get to the UFC for what seems like forever. I think that he’s gonna be to much for Kampmann. I’ll say Condit by RNC round 2.
by Couchchamp on Mar 12, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions
Dang I love this matchup
I feel as if kampman is going to hurt condit and be close to victroy, but in the end condit might pull a submission
I say condit 3rd rd sub
by phenomenal angel on Mar 12, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions
Condit seems like a cocky mofo. I hope the Hitman kills him.
by anom on Mar 12, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions
I really hope Kampmann give that cocky pos a good taste of what UFC life is really like, crapdit was always content at staying in the WEC, im sure he shyt a brick when WEC did away with the WW divsion. It sucks that Brock Larson got hurt and couldnt avenge the loss he had to crapdit. Oh well lets go Martin
by See What Had Happend Was !!!! on Mar 12, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions
Gotta pull for Kampmann here. I think he’s going to continue to do quite well at 170. Condit will be ok himself but this is a tough test for a first UFC fight. Condit will get KO’d back to reality but then probably win his next few fights after this loss. Go Hitman!
