Yeah…

All that keep playing through my mind, ever since yesterday, is when Mask gave me my TapouT shorts before my last fight. He gave them to me and said “Much love bro. We’re behind you.”

What’s worse is that, at the time, I didn’t appreciate it all that much…

R.I.P Mask, and thanks.

I would hope in such times of difficulty, people have consideration for the surviving family members of all involved. Losing a family member is never easy.

REPOST THIS FOR ALL TO READ

From: The Mistress is Here (151741031)
Date: Mar 12, 2009 6:33 AM
Subject: Join me, wear Tapout on Friday as a show of support………

We were all shocked and saddened by the passing of Charles Lewis aka Mask yesterday. On behalf of my team we send out our love to the TapouT Family. I am calling on everyone in the MMA Community to unite as one, to put aside all differences and show the TapouT Crew how much we love them. I am asking everyone to wear your TapoutT apparel on Friday as a show of appreciation, love, and support. Please repost this bulletin and lets show the Crew our support. Its not a lot to ask, and I think we should band together to show love to the pioneers of our sport. Take a stand with me and wear your TapouT gear with me tomorrow and make a statement that we love them and support them, and show our love….Dallas..CALI..NEW YORK.. VEGAS.. PHILLY.. NJ…FLA!!!!

Mask was a good guy. Remember the episode where he got that troubled kid from the streets of New Mexico and took him to Marquardts gym and gave him a membership. that was absolutely richeous of him.

this is my last post today, you newwr guys are succeeding, first John, now me. I see no reason for the personal attacks on my family, but whatever. i put this in a different thread but here. see you guys another day!
.
I thought I summed it up in my comment today, but I guess not. Your examples are good, back when I drank, if I had hit a tree and been killed, yeah, it would have been on me. Thankfully, I never hurt anyone else in those dark years. I’m not perfect, and "being at the top" was a joke towards John, (the regulars got it). Whatever man, we all disagree from time to time on this site, that’s what makes it interesting, my value for human life differs from yours, my sense of reality when put in the perspective of war vs. speeding or drives into the desert vs. breast cancer, doesn’t make my views better or worse than yours, shit happens. I’m 32, and surprised I’ve made it this far, I’ve done things that would land me in jail for a long time, but that is the past, no one is perfect, but I can look myself in the mirror every day and know that I’m better person than I once was!

by kevin on Mar 12, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

kev, you should realize that a lot of these “newer guys” are the same guy

by McArthur on Mar 12, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a newer guy. I’ve been around for well over a year. I AM a regular. I just don’t post in every comments section. Nor do I usually get involved in the conversation. I just usually leave my comment, and leave it at that.

You need to understand, kevin, you act like a prick, you’re gonna get it back.

You make baseless comments about people, and insensitive comments about people who die…yet you can’t take someone calling your wife ugly? Please…grow a pair.

And don’t give me some sob story about “mistakes you made”. I don’t care if you were a prick in the past, or you’re a prick now. If you did something that warranted being in jail, then you probably still should be.

And again…weren’t you in court RECENTLY on assault charges?

by Dredg XI on Mar 12, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

he said in another thread that assault was from 2004
also he said he didn’t care about attacks on his family and that he was “lucky to find a young lady to marry him.”
I don’t necessarily agree with what was said, but you guys took it to the next level, not kevin!

by stinky~fingers on Mar 12, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude why are you bashing on Kevin so bad? It makes no sense how you can call him such a prick when your showing how much of a prick you can be. Read your posts and realize that slinging mud is a worthless endeavor. I really thank Mask for what he did for the MMA community but this was a wreckless act and could have hurt more than just himself… as a matter of fact it did. Mask was racing in his car with a female passanger (drinking was suspected). Now this passenger is in the hospital in serious condition, the driver of the other car is getting charged with a vehicular homicide charge (wreckless or something) and Mask himself died leaving his loved ones in a world of pain. The man brought this on himself and hurt many others in the process, now I agree you shouldn’t bash the dead but you shouldn’t have to pretend like this was some sort of tragic accident when really it was an expected accident…drinking and street racing do not mix. I hope the best for the female survivor.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 12, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Amen Cogito. Nothin but love for you Kevin. You’re entitled to your opinion, and so is everyone else here. The personal bashing is stupid.

by LJ on Mar 12, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

nice post Ergo!

by McArthur on Mar 12, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don’t understand how anybody can show any sympathy for Kevin. Sure, Dredg went overboard by going after his family but it’s not completely uncalled for. Kevin demonstrated how heartless and incompassionate he is with his NUMEROUS disrespectful comments about the late Charles Lewis Jr. O damn put it best. You don’t necessarily have to feel bad if you didn’t know the man personally, but WHY in the world would you go out of your way to be so callous and insulting? Kevin deserves to feel like crap for all that BS. I really don’t fault Dredg for going after him like he has. I have 100% more respect for him than I do for Kevin.

And if it makes Kevin feel any better, he has a lovely family. He almost doesn’t deserve it.

by Jono on Mar 12, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I know what your saying Jono. You just can’t judge the way someone reacts to death, because you don’t know what they’ve been through, or what molded them into being the person that they are. It all started w/ him asking if mask would be burried in character, and then went down hill from there. Bottom line is that everybody is entitled to their opinion, and we don’t have to agree w/ eachother. Kevin never made it personal w/ anyone, but people attacked him personally. I don’t completely agree w/ Kevin, but that doesn’t mean he can’t speak his mind.

by LJ on Mar 12, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve been on this site for about 3 yrs, I’ve seen Kevin’s callous comments about those that do wrong whether they die or are just arrested. I see his viewpoint as a one sided principle … he doesn’t feel enough compassion for the wrong doers family, friends or MMA community to consider not posting a comment that will get reprecussions. I assume he’s smart enough to know, that’s exactly what he’s asking for.. reprecussions. I believe this site is freedom of opinion… so I don’t blame Dredg for his opinion either. Are they both crossing the line?… ‘sure they are’… 1 guy keeps toping the other and it can get ugly! Dredg XI is just as liable for ‘overtheline’ comments as is Kevin… Mask has family n’ friends n’ MMA fans reading these blogs as well, many of them will respond due to hurtful remarks. Is Kevin’s family fair game? ‘Absolutely not’… is Mask fair game for his mistake?… since he died? I’d say ‘Absolutely not’ Mask paid the ultimate price. However, if certain bloggers want to rip into eachother, then that’s their option.

by DAVE A on Mar 12, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I personally wish kevin would go play in traffic after the shit he said yesterday and I agree 100% with Dredg and alot of others yesterday that stood up too him being a asshole..

He was being a dick on purpose , constantly putting 1 liners on others posts , mostly sarcasam so he could take it back and say " show me where I joked " , most ppl can read between the lines and know whats up Kev..

But for the most part he was being asshole on purpose and Im glad he got the shit that he did .

Kev did make it personal , but in a different way .. He knew the ppl that he was upsetting with his posts so he kept doing it so he could get under their skin and get a reaction , guess what … He got a reaction , just not the one he wanted.

Wow, I too have been part of this site for years. And alot of you keep telling me to shut the F up. But Kevin is a ass. Kevin (the most moderated guy on mania)…was that right? I’ve been reading this site for about a year and just recently started to post. Our beliefs on Human life (no matter how they are taken) might be different, but you have great MMA knowledge and I like to see what you have to say. If people are threatning your family…THAT AINT COOL. F what people think about you. I live in a neighborhood where I don’t like anyone (except my MMA bud next door) and if they were not here tomorrow it wouldn’t affect my life in the least. I think we all got what you were saying. The difference in posting that stuff on a site like this, is that all of us were fighters, wanted to be fighters or are training to be fighters and all have very aggressive personalties. Nuff said…

Keep posting bro!

if your a better person than you once were, then damn you must have been a peice of crap earlier

by connor on Mar 12, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t post very often but every now and then you see or read something that makes you have to indulge, and lets be honest Kevin, you know a thing or two about indulging. I couldn’t give a rats butt if you are a recovering alcoholic. If this is what sobriety is like for you than maybe you should hit the sauce again. If you are such a “better” person than you once were than at the bare minimum you’d think you’d have enough respect to leave an issue like a man dying alone. But not you Kevin. You need to take this as an opportunity to insult the man who has passed away and then cry foul because it got turned on you. You really need to accept the fact that you are not the king of the world. Where the F is your sponsor buddy? Isn’t part of his job to help you become a better person by doing the 12 steps. I am a recovering drug addict that has been clean for 6 years so i know a thing or 2 about how to work a program Kevin. Good luck to you in life if you keep on being the man you are today. My biggest Pet Peeve in 12 step programs are the guys like you that feel that now that the cork is in the bottle you are magically restored to a great person. It takes work Kevin and judging by your clearly tasteless and crass comments about a guy that has done so much for the sport that you say you love, you might as well be drinking. Read these over Kevin and tell me how you live this in your everyday life because from what i’ve seen, you have no clue as to what you are doing. you might wanna do a 4th and 5th sometime. R.I.P. Mask.

The 12 Steps

1: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5: Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7: Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8: Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9: Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10: Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Respectfully Guys,

I only mentioned the UFC as they are the biggest name in the game. However, if there was a Cooperstown for MMA, I’m certain the UFC would dominate it with entries.

That said,

Cooperstown also acknowledges it’s non playing contributors that had a significant impact on the sport of baseball.

Charles “Mask” Lewis would definitely be one of those pioneers worthy of entry into the sport’s non participant Hall of Fame wing.

Since when do they put guys from Louisville Slugger or Rawlings in Cooperstown? As far as I know, only baseball executives and announcers get in, other than players. I don’t even think the most influential, passionate apparrell guys are getting in the hall. No doubt, this guy did a lot for the sport. His a great dude. But hall of famer he is not.

by Boom Goes the Dynamite! on Mar 12, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

i thinkt he ufc needs to honor mask with a slot on there new video game, and a nice tribute video on there..

why wouldn’t he belong in the ufc hall of fame though? he’s been around longer then anyone but shamrock and severn, his brand has been on every ufc cage for how long now? i think tapout itself belongs in the ufc hall of fame

by randy murders on Mar 12, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I gotta agree with randy , you cant go 10 mins on a UFC without Goldie saying something about tapout , not too mention they are at every UFC and WEC event their is … Hes helped make the UFC millions im sure.

When I think of tapout I think of UFC , not mma. Might just be me tho.

mask seemed cool in the video. shame people have to die doing stupid things. he meant alot to the sport because tapout backed many many fighters since the early years. he deserves something. its a shame he had to die to get it though. let people have opinions even if they are probably just trying to stoke a fire because they are bored. We do live in America freedoms are what we have and if we take them away then mma, tapout, and being able to dress like mask did would not have survived.

Kevin. Get the F over yourself buddy. You talk way way way too much about yourself and your b.s. in threads about people way more important then you that have recently died. Bugger off already for real.

Interesting as well as some unfortunate comments. I find myself wanting to rip someone a new one rather than express thoughts of R.I.P.

Tap Out has become part of the fabric of the MMA scene. In the recent past I would find myself looking to see who would wear their logo. Today it is rare to find a fighter without Tap Out somewhere on their trunks. I was rather impressed with Mask’s passion although I didn’t know him past his persona. You have to feel for all those who lost a dear friend or family member. Best wishes to them and the MMA community.

ok KEVIN here it comes, so get your tissues & your sponsors # ready pal. i’m not a fucking “newer guy”. i visit this site at least a dozen times a day and have done so for well over a year. i cannot express how little i give a shit about your personal life or the substance abuse that you’ve overcome. i rarely post because i just like to sit back and see what my fellow MMA fans opinions are because there are some really intelligent fans here who provide some great insight into the sport. did mask make a really stupid decision by racing and putting the lives of strangers in jeopardy and almost killing his girlfriend? ABSOUTELY. but seriously kev, nobody give a fuck if you can “look myself in the mirror every day and know that I’m better person than I once was!” CONGRATS, so your a little less of a piece of shit than you were when you were a drunk. just another miserable, bitter, hating 12 stepper who thinks that somebody might care that “my value for human life differs from yours”. but i don’t want to upset you buddy, i don’t hope that you fall face first off the wagon & take 12 steps to the liquor store. and YES it was wrong to insult your family. that’s probably the only thing i will ever agree with you on. HAVE A NICE DAY YOU MISERABLE, DISRESPECTFUL PRICK :)

lol, I’m not a 12 stepper Bombay, and this all started with a stupid question. I simply was asking if he’d be buried in character or not. I saw people say way worse, but I got personally slammed. it is what it is. By the way, I find that the people at AA are usually hypocrites making excuses for what they’ve done, haven’t been to a meeting in 3 + years. Not trying to sound better than anyone, just, as usual, keeping it real and putting myself out there!

My mom is an alcoholic and it is amazing what a bitch she can be when it comes to people that like to have a beer after golf or whatever. I actually play golf with another alcoholic and there attitudes are basically the same. There life once sucked but now that they have seen the light its almost as if they think they are better than everybody. Im not sure if anyone knows ex addicts or not but they are all the same, they chain smoke cigarettes, chain drink coffee and tend to speak over people, very loud. I think they are looking for acceptance or want people like me to hold them up high on a pedastal because they are not wasted every minu8te of the day anymore. This KEVIN guy is a waste of skin and wants everybody to think he special because for the first time in his life he made the right choice and the only reason he continues to do this shit is because people like you keep feeding his fire. He pisses people off and gets to fight with them here because his lfe is pathetic and he enjoys it, this is fun for him which is sick and twisted but as long as people continue to respond to his sensless posts his life is fullfilled. I can say that as soon as we all stop responding to this little shit he will go away. Personally I would think that someone who has had such a hard time at life would be a little nicer to people but he obviously is just a gutter bug that cant get out of his own way. KEVIN MAYBE YOU SHOULD START DRINKIING AGAIN, IM SURE YOU WERE A NICER GUY BACK THEN. SORRY ABOUT YOUR PATHTIC LIFE AND YOUR PERSONAL ANGER ISSUE’S DUDE, LET ME GUESS…..YOU PROBABLY GO TO CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY AS WELL.

RIP Mask. Thanks for your contribution to the sport I have come to love.

Why is no one commenting on the content of the video? Very solid stuff. This guy had a whole lot figured out. He may have gone too soon but at least he lived his dream; his passion.

Its a shame to say the least I thought the face painting was silly at first but after watching the tapout show and seeing what these guys are doing for up and coming fighters and the sport in general he could wear a tu tu and still be cool as f@%k to me. and people judging him for driving to fast and shit like that come on now people make mistakes and I dont consider it a mistake just being in the wrong place at the wrong time it could happen to anybody at any time. another unfortunate loss for the mma community. My best wishes go out to his family and friends

Mask was uber-lame. Good riddance. And Lulz to the naive media who labeled him an MMA legend. Bahahahhahaha!!! Fail.

I wish your parents would’ve played with you more when you were younger so you didn’t have to seek attention.

It amazes me that people do not think of bad karma coming back to haunt them when they are spaeking ill of the dead. You just insulted a dead guy man.

I came upon the crash site in Newport around 10 a.m., to attend a meeting, not knowing the crash had occurred around 1 a.m. prior. I saw the news story this weekend about the crash, and had heard about TapOut, however, finally, put all the pieces together enough to look at Charles Lewis’s final interview on the Internet. What an inspiration! He gave an indication that he wasn’t long for this world. God believed Charles could do better up above than here on this planet. God bless Charles Lewis and his family and loved ones.
