Tim Job: Sylvia jumping in the deep end against Ray Mercer on May 30

Props: MMAWeekly
Quoteworthy:
"I’m going to give it a whirl. Basically a fight’s a fight, and I didn’t have an MMA fight until July in the Affliction 3 (show), and we really wanted to fight before then. This opportunity came about – and I’ve always wanted to try boxing at a pro level – so we decided to take it and see what happens. I’m jumping in the deep end. I never have (done things half way). Look at the heavyweight (MMA) division; I’ve fought about seven of the Top 10. So I might as well jump right in there and fight a guy that’s ranked in the Top 20 in the world."
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia -- who first called out the brittle Ken Shamrock last December, might want to consider a second career in nursing at his local hospice now that he has such a passion for geriatric abuse. "The Maine-iac" has agreed to box former Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer -- barely one month after "Merciless" turns 48 years of age -- at the Adrenaline III card from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ on May 30. Should be one for the books.

who has tim beat that was ever really good anyways besides arlovski?
by brendan on Mar 10, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions
rodriguez was good enough to beat couture and sylvia beat him in suaves prime.

Joe Rogan said during the Sylvia/Mir fight that Sylvia took those particular steriods not to enhance his performance, but to sculpt his body more. You know, with the flab and all. Im just saying, not defending him.
He also face kicked Tra Telligman, which was pretty cool looking. The KO of Gan McGee was nice. But those were WAy back when.
I also liked his performance against Couture. His losing performance!

i prefer his performance against fedor!!
and yes im fedor’s biggest critic write this down, i love watching fedor vs sylvia over and over again

Rogan was told that by Sylvia. Typical “I didnt really mean any harm” post busted for steroids defense. Its the steroid era in sports, just apologize and people will forgive, spare the “I only took steroids because…” lines.
I’m sure Sylvia was distraught by the performance enhancing side affects of trying to look better on camera.

I thought Timmy looked good against Big Nog as well. He completely owned that fight for all but 10 seconds (i know, i know welcome to the world of BJJ).
Still tho, Tim is no mug.
by Nick J on Mar 11, 2009 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions
Tim didn’t test positive/have his title stripped after
Rico, but after the title defense against Gan McGee.
by Bauh4us on Mar 11, 2009 8:21 AM EDT up reply actions
Too many people defending Sylvia if you ask me. The guy is one of the most over rated champions that the UFC has ever created. TOugh guy? Yes, but come on. His title fight against Monson was the poorest excuse for an mma fight that I have ever seen. He humped vera who had a broken hand against the fence for 15 minutes. Yes he beat Arlovski, and Ricco…those are his only decent wins. Gan McGee and Tra weren’t very good. Couture’s old ass dominated him. Fedor made him look like a 2nd grader. He looked good against Nog, but still found himself tapping for dear life.
Mercer top 20? Really tim? Give me a break. Mercer was submitted by Kimbo slice…..you know how crazy it is to say? Kimbo via submission. lol I know its a boxing fight but seriously, Mercer?
I cant wait to find out who Tim faces at Affliction 3. I would like to see him matched up against Gilbert Yvel. I wouldnt mind seeing Tim vs. Alistar either.

Why can’t Tim Sylvia just f**king go away?
by Euro_MMA on Mar 10, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly, couldn’t he have retired after the $$ he got fighting Fedor? What would be the big accomplishment by beating someone on social security He’ll lose, then what??? lmfao!!! Good luck there Lumpy.

I remember his interview on Inside MMA right after he left UFC. He said he was excited that he is now going to have the chance to fight 5-6 times per year. That was in Feb 2008. He’s fought exactly one time since then. And now he’s boxing a 50 yr old guy.

Ray Mercer was top 20 when most of the posters here (including me) were popping pimples in grammar school.

Sylvia is pretty much just straight stand-up anyway, head kick KO of Telligman notwithstanding. He better be able to KO this dinosaur.
by PW on Mar 10, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
boxing eh, even if its against an over the hill fighter, tim’s footwork is just plain ugly fot boxing alone! off topic here, dont kno if it has been posted, but the sun is reporting that rampage will not be fighting rashad due to injuries, heres the link : http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/ufc/article2311041.ece

good shit right there! Rampage took one for the UFC when he decided to step up against Keith Jardine.. now it’s time for him to heal up! Btw Andrei Arlovski would crush Tim Sylvia in a boxing match..
by RoB on Mar 10, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Mercer all the way…Tim has a hard time KOing guys with 4oz gloves let alone boxing gloves
by McArthur on Mar 11, 2009 7:36 AM EDT up reply actions
the only thing that will lose this fight for mercer is his age, in his prime tim would never win and he still could get his ass kicked by mercer.
by roy on Mar 11, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah if Mercer wasn’t 97 years old, he would crush sylvia!
by DAVE on Mar 11, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions
lol, trust me he may still crush tim.it is a boxing match.

yea, he’s gonna get worked. Seriously though, why didn’t he and AA just have a straight up boxing match??

I think this is a massive chance to get off the ground and I think it could happen at Affliction 3 event .. or a later one.

Tim is going to get hit so many times that in about round 7 or 8, he’s going to throw a high kick and get disqualified..

I guess careers in mma go downhill after you fight fedor. ie: sylvia, cro cop, arlovski…
by Tony on Mar 10, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions
nogueira, zulu, choi they are all downhill after they fought fedor…lucky for mr. granny couture…the fight against fedor would probably send him to retirement or a paralytically good living…lol
by gaara on Mar 10, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
nog never went down the hill,he went 5-0 till the next time they fought and it was a NC then they fought again and he lost but also went 4-0 lost to barnett then came to the ufc won the belt how is that down hill and for zulu and choi WHEN were they ever up the hill.i am pretty sure it was fedor who was dodging couture!!
by NM on Mar 10, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Randy Couture turned down a chance to fight Fedor when he retired from the UFC in Bodog. Randy has confirmed that. Its funny how everyone would have probably been dogging Fedor for fighting Randy since he was coming off the Chuck loses.
Nog never went downhill? Despite getting dropped in his last 5 fights? Sure has looked slower and less explosive to me. If you feel that way more power to you, but sounds like some fight finder analysis to me.
by Rick on Mar 11, 2009 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions
way to go tim, maybe if you win you could call out the former champ muhammed ali and beat his old ass. you can go out a legend.

by black on Mar 10, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions
With the pathetic state of the heavyweight division in boxing nowadays, Tim Sylvia can beat everybody there except for persons named Klitschko. Valuev and Tim Sylvia boxing match would be dubbed, “battle of the snoozefest freaks.”
by Phasebook on Mar 11, 2009 1:04 AM EDT reply actions
Uhh No. The HW division sucks but come on.
Tim Sylvia is going to beat Chagaev, Carlos Gomez, Povetkin, Dimitrenenko, etc. with zero Ring experience? Alexander Ustinov made a fairly recent transition to boxing and he is bigger, hits harder, and was a very accomplished K1 fighter. He would hand Sylvia his ass.
He is fighting Ray Mercer for godsake, the same Mercer who got beat convincingly by Derric Rossy. Anybody who follows boxing knows how far from the Top 20 Ray Mercer is.
I like Tim, I think he gets a lot of unneccasary hate from people, but he is clearly in check collecting mode. Ray Mercer has been there for years.
by Rick on Mar 11, 2009 2:13 AM EDT up reply actions
best thing Tim Sylvia can do is at least fight wearing a
t-shirt , it wont help his performance but at leat we wont have 2 see his flab shake when he walks under an air conditioner

While there’s absolutely no doubt that Mercer is a good decade & a half beyond his prime as he swiftly pushes on toward 50, that doesn’t mean than he’s a completely shot fighter. Despite the outcry that he is.
This isn’t a case of someone like Leon Spinks who was getting beaten up by 2-28 barely warm bodies & being KO’d inside a single round by clubfighters making their pro debuts at the end of his career. THAT was pathetic.
As were Mercer’s attempts at K-1 & MMA. But, he’s still competent in the boxing ring as evidenced by his upset win over Richel Hersisia in Europe in his last outing.
And, IMO & what is probably going to be MUCH to Timmy’s own shock & dismay come fight night, Mercer is going to walk right through Sylvia & the boxing skills that “The Maine-iac” so foolishly overrates as being world class.
Don’t get me wrong though, there is a small chance that Sylvia could parlay his size, reach & awkward style into a points win if the bout is scheduled for four rounds or maybe even six, if Mercer gets off to a really slow start. But, that sort of “perfect storm” is highly unlikely.
And, if the match up is scheduled for anything beyond six?
Forget about it.
Sylvia’s getting stopped for sure.
And probably taking a man-sized beatdown in the process.

Sylvia is a legacy of the barfighter days. He’s built like a truckdriver, not an athlete.
Shoo, Tim.

“I’m going to give it a whirl. Basically a fight’s a fight…”
Tim, you’ve spoken like a true jackass.
(a) Ray Mercer is no longer near a top 20 boxer… I’d be surprised if he were even ranked at the bottom of a top 100 list.
(b) Don’t know which decision is worse: yours to box, or Mercer’s to box. Mercer is 47… he turned the corner on retirement lane over a decade ago.
© This is like a boxer claiming that fighting MMA is just like boxing. Do you see Ray Mercer deciding to give MMA a “whirl.” Oh right, he did… found himself on the wrong end of a guillotine choke.
(d) Tim, open a couple gyms, preserve what legacy you have down in Miletich land, and don’t fall into the trap of not knowing when to throw in the towel.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Former UFC Heavyweight Champ Tim Sylvia has issued a challenge to “The King!” The call out came ealier today at the Superdome in New Orleans during the Burger King Corporation’s announcement of the company’s new “Chinese Buffet Burger!” Sylvia called the King weak and ridiculed the size of his head. The King was on location and accepted Sylvia’s challenge! The corporation’s newly elected president, Kimbo Slice, agreed to alow the fight to take place only after the King finishes filming his next two commercials. The fight is to take place under the Unified Fast Food Alliance(UFFA) rules. The bout will be scheduled for two 5 minute rounds with the first round being comprised of a Whopper eating contest. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the 99 cent menu at all participating Burger King restaurants.
