UFC Quick Quote: Seconds matter to Keith Jardine after loss to Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson

"I’m pretty pissed off right now. One of the judges told me I lost the fight in the last 10 seconds, and that’s pretty hard to take."
-- Keith Jardine tells Sherdog.com about a conversation he had with a judge after his unanimous decision loss to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 96: "Jackson vs. Jardine" from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, this past weekend. "The Dean of Mean" was dropped -- for the second time in the three-round main event fight -- as the seconds ticked down to end the match. Jackson ended up winning on all three judges scorecards: 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27. Did those 10 seconds truly matter ... was it really that close?

1st.. .and no jardine doin his little skippin to the side, hands down all the time, and not throwin his kicks like he usually does.. it was pretty boring. thought he would do a lot better. showed to much resepect.

Do we need to have CONTROVERSY after every single UFC event?
I dont get it, how is this even a debate? I cant see how anyone would score that fight anyway but 30-28 in favor of Rampage.

The first was close (nothing happened) but the second and third were clearly Rampage’s even before the last 10 secs.

agreed with MoonUK…2nd and 3rd were Page’s no question
by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions
I gave the 1st round to Jardine as he seemed to be the agressor…they threw and landed shots pretty equally in the 1st. The other 2 rounds were Page’s though. I think if you take out the last 10 seconds and if Jardine had gotten that takedown he attempted in the 3rd he might have pulled it out but that didn’t happen so it was definitely Page 29-28. It was a pretty lackluster performance from Page and I was disappointed that Jardine seemed to gas so quickly cause he had a chance to take the 2nd round when Page looked a little wobbly on his legs from that uppercut he ate. Page is one of the best at covering up though…I’ll give him that. He doesn’t take a lot of punishment when guys throw some flurries at him. It was nice to see Jardine’s chin hold up the way it did…I like Jardine and his attitude but he just can’t seem to string those Ws together to get a crack at the belt. It’s hard cause he only fights guys in the top 10 of the UFC for the most part…can’t fault him for that. I’d like to see him fight Thiago Silva or get the fight he missed out on…Luis Cane.

Im not sure how most people saw that incident following the shin to Rampages nutsack. He looked in pain then he said he was OK to fight as they showed the replay then when it went back from the replay he looked like he was walking funny cos of the groin pain. I’ll have to check it again but thats what it looked like to me. He should have took up to 5 mins and f*ck the crowd if they boo. It would’ve been really shitty if Jardine took advantage of that and finshed him because of it.
by Ca$z on Mar 9, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions
I was thinking the same so I watched it again. The ref was at fault!! At no time did he offer Rampage any time, the only thing he asked was if he wished to continue!! He couldn’t say no as that would have finished the fight Antony Johnson style,
by MoonUK on Mar 9, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah it looked like that. Considering it was a blatant groin shot it would be given if he complained though.
If that would have happened Yves Lavigne would have been fired on the spot following the controversy that followed him that night.
by Ca$z on Mar 9, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Bustr Bluth, I think you got it right. Alothough I wouldn’t have given round three to Keith even if the last 10 seconds were gone and he go the takedown. It seemed to me that Keith ate a stiff jab for every leg kick he threw and that’s not an even trade in my book. And having his hands down allowed Page to connect on way too many headshots. I was pulling for Jardine, but Page was just doing more damage.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Mar 9, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
I think the groin shot happened right after he had already wobbled Jardine, that’s why he wanted to continue so quickly afterward, he wantd to finish the job. At least thats what i remember.
by Venzia on Mar 9, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions
you got it right venzia, but Rampage was still hurt after that groin shot so he could barely walk straight on his legs.. then Jardine came in and Rampage blocked like 10 punches perfectly.. Rashad was like oh he rocked him with a uppercut! pssst, noway dude.
by RoB on Mar 9, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Rampage himself already commented on this. He said that it hurt, but he felt he had Jardine hurt so he didn’t want to give him the time to rest.
As for the scoring, I had it pretty similar to what Buster said. I gave a close first round to Jardine. The second was all Rampage. In a way you could almost say that he did lose the fight in the last 10 seconds, not because he was ahead, but because the third round was close and whoever did something big could take it. When Jardine went crashing to the floor, that gave the fight to Rampage, but if Jardine could have dropped Rampage instead, then he would have been given the round and the fight.
by naturalshadow on Mar 10, 2009 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Totally agree John. Jardine throwing some really uncommitted goofy looking strikes and running out the way before he gets hit does not score points in my book.
I think he was just trying to stall Rampage from getting off and not be able to throw his big shots at him.
Rampage was controlling and defending and looking to put him away if he got the chance. I might have given Sardine the first round if I was being very generous but I would have been disgusted if he won if the last ten second knockdown didn’t happen.

MONDAY MORNING CONVERSATION WITH KEVIN:
Rampages vs. Rashad:
Rampage could hype a fight between John and Penny Puffington, but maybe he should spend part of that time focusing on fighting! I for one am really not that excited for this fight, and truly feel that Machida deserves the shot, not Rampage. I know guys, a complete 180, I have been vocal about how I think Rampage should have had an instant rematch following the Griffin loss. Well times have changed!
Rampage is doing something that I haven’t seen before, getting the most hype and attention out of any fighter (since Chuck Liddell), and at the same time, being one of the most inconsistent fighters out there. Yes, when 2 top guys get in there, we’ll see decisions, thats not the problem! Jackson looked awful in his win against Jardine. He was slow and indecisive. He fought a similar fight against Forrest. Kinda strange, both lackluster, forgettable performances followed KO’s of legends! If he fights this fight against Rashad, he’ll get his head knocked out, only thing going for Page is the model is calling for a KO.
.
Rashad is not only a terrible commentator, but a terrible champion too! Her was offered a fight with Rampage after he beat Forrest, on the same amount of rest, and said he wouldn’t have enough time…disgraceful! Instead, he gets his teammate to get in there and show him how to win. Real athletes step up and fight anytime, on short notice, hurt and then don’t talk about it! Kos, GSP and Nog are a few I can name recently!
Class is a word some of you throw around too much. Why does Rashad have class? He show boats, talks way too much trash and has never showed empathy or concern for a hurt opponent. Those qualities are what class is. Just because a guy puts on a suit (that any of you could go buy, and you would know how to tie the tie), doesn’t mean he has class!
Too close of a fight to call, but right now, leaning towards Rashad via KO. Train hard page!!!

" He was slow and indecisive. He fought a similar fight against Forrest. Kinda strange, both lackluster, forgettable performances followed KO’s of legends"
I think this might have bbeen from Page’s fear of losing to leg kicks. He doesn’t check them well and decides to dance out of way making it hard for him to stay in close
by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Wow, I totally agree with you about Rashad being such a disgraceful champ and fighter in general. I just havn’t heard it said in such a calm and logical manner. Props

Kevin A agree completly about your opinion on Rashad and, class. However Im goin to attribute Rampages performance to Jardine’s style. You are correct about Rashad he is an asshole trying to be likeable. I even remember him baggin on Tito for wearing a suite in an old interview he did
by lokie on Mar 9, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions
kev, as you know, I thought Machida deserved that shot all along. But i was thinking that Machida would beat ‘Shad and then Page would be the first to beat Machida. I don’t see it. Page doesn’t deal well with guys who can keep distance and Machida is the best at that. As soon as Machida gets his shot, he’s gonna start a very long reign as LHW Champ. I don’t see anyone right now that I think has much of a chance to take him out.
by Crowls on Mar 9, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
OK Kevin, I gotta say I respectfully disagree:
“He was offered a fight with Rampage after he beat Forrest, on the same amount of rest, and said he wouldn’t have enough time…disgraceful!”
The guy has been fighting regularly for years now, just won what’s arguably the most coveted belt in MMA and wanted some time to enjoy it. I believe any fighter in any weight class should take a little more time than normal to enjoy their new-found accolade when they win it for the 1st time. It’s a great achievement for any fighter and they deserve to take some time to revel in it.
It also needs to be understood that once you become champion the overall scenario and your career change drastically. Your contract needs re-negotiating, priorities change, strategies change, training styles/intensity changes, etc. I know as fan’s we like things to happen on our terms but choosing to re-assess & re-evaluate a situation before rushing forward is the mark of intelligence and wisdom.
“Class is a word some of you throw around too much.”
I can’t make you or anyone like the guy & whether or not a person thinks another person has class is totally up to them & their opinion of what class is. I just want to remind people to also consider that it doesn’t take a great personality or star-like charisma to become a great fighter or to become champion. It takes physical ability, hard work, dedication, commitment & pure heart. All of which Rashad has displayed throughout his entire UFC career.
“has never showed empathy or concern for a hurt opponent”
I can agree with you on some things sometimes but this is totally false. I can’t let a statement like this one go because it’ll mislead posters that are still growing as MMA fans. If I knew how to post links I would post a clip of Rashad either walking over and checking on his opponents &/or stating in his post fight interview with Rogan that he hopes they’re OK. He’s been showing empathy and concern right in front of everyone’s faces. THe problem is that people counted him out so often that they were in total shock each time he won and they completely overlooked or ignored what they saw.
by Machine on Mar 9, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions
well,in fairness,I saw no class in the way rash spoke to page, and definately he showed no class when he knocked out chuck.I mean, how long was chuck on the floor bein seen to,before he broke out in to his retard, chest pain dance routine.the guy is trash.
and as for jardine,i scored it 29-28 to page, with or without whatever went on in the last 10 seconds
by bons on Mar 9, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions
what are you talking about, i disagree on everything except for Machine’s post… calling someone a motherf*cker right in their face is too much of a personal attack, he needs to chill out.. being biased and getting all up in a legends face basically calling him a loser is bad business too. talking smack to hype a fight and showboating is another thing called entertainment, see the difference ppl it’s not the same even if you think it is.. as for Rampage you can’t be one of the most inconsistent fighters having won every fight except one that the judges took away from him, that is not possible.. he clearly won over Jardine without a problem! put on mute or watch the fight with commentators from another country, that will change the whole experience!! get someone who can open their eyes while commentating and has a feeling for kickboxing
by RoB on Mar 9, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Rashad looked bad when he commentated the fight and when he stepped up in the ring after the fight, taking things personal equals bad business! showboating and talking smack is ok with me, that’s just entertainment, like it or not! you can do whatever you want to except personally attacking someone and getting in the face of someone like Rampage, who just happens to be the biggest name in the UFC alongside Brock Lesnar..

Jardine did not do what they said he would do. Rampage was right in front of him. Very few kicks. Oh but he did get the nipple twist in. I’m glad he lost…….dumbass.

Rampage didn’t do what he said he would do either, which was knock Jardine out quickly. And do you know why he didn’t? Because Jardine didn’t do what he said he was going to, which was his GAMEPLAN
by JRE on Mar 9, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Rampage was just too strong for Keith. He went for a takedown early but it got stuffed. That was a part of Jardine’s gameplan and he tried a few times but they were unsuccessful. Jardine was game and I think he did a great job. I was rooting for him the whole time just so he could do well and not get KTFO.

Last 10 seconds my a$$. Rampage rocked Jardine 3 or 4 times in that fight and took him down. Jardine is dreaming if he think that last knock down decided it.
by Boom Goes the Dynamite! on Mar 9, 2009 9:15 AM EDT reply actions
Jardine had a couple good shots, but 90% of the fight Rampage brought the fight to Jardine. Maybe the judge meant to say if you knocked him out in the last ten seconds you would have won, but there is no way he won any round in my book. He was on the defensive and running away, ducking and diving. Give me a break on him winning with that performance.
by b on Mar 9, 2009 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions
Totally agree guys! Only a Rampage hater could have the ballz/stupidity to say that Jardine should have won the fight!
bTW, the last ten seconds did NOT make a difference!

Yeah, at worst it would have been 29-28 Jackson. Without the last knockdown it would have been close but I still had Rampage winning. No way could I give it to Jardine.
by RobH86 on Mar 9, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions
yes, i doubt that Jardine even landed a punch that scored in that fight.. all he did was throwing weak leg kicks, Jardine was absolutely exhausted after that first round and through the whole fight!
by RoB on Mar 9, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Why is Jardine dreaming? The judge said it..not him. I gave the first to Jardine. Second to Page, and the third was pretty damn close until Page made it easy for us with the last drop.
by c-war on Mar 9, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions
Correction: Jardine must be dreaming if he “believes” the ref who told him that the last knock down decided it. He’ll be singing a different tune if he watches the replay.

What did Jardine do in the third, besides get hit a few times, and takin down. Forget the last ten seconds and even being on the run in the third. What did Jardine do to over come the takedown on the score cards
by lokie on Mar 9, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Ya , I had Rampage winning the last round pretty easy before the knock down .. There is a poll on Sherdog I think and most agree that Page already had it won.
I think whoever told his camp that was just being nice or they were just making shit up too make the Dead feel better.. I had Page 30-27 and its one of the few times I agree with Cecil Peoples. If Rampage would have taken time after getting kicked in the balls he would have never got wobbled at all the entire fight.
by dayzah on Mar 9, 2009 9:23 AM EDT reply actions
I personally felt that Rampage out-boxed him the whole fight. There were a couple of occasions when Jardine had him backtracking off a flurry of punches but he never looked like he could stop him.

Did you guys hear about what matt Serra did? Coolest thing I have ever heard!
A blogger was listening to Goldy and hughes promoting the Serra/Hughes fight and they were saying how Serra deoesnt stand a chance. This blogger went on Serra’s website to tell Serra what was being said about him and to show Serra his support….the fan then left his phone number.
The next day his phone rings and he got a call from Matt Serra. Serra stayed on the phone wityh him for about 20 minutes…just letting a fan know that he appreciates him and talking about upcoming fights as well as the dRago/Brown outcome.
This has got to be one of the coolest fighter stories EVER! Props to serra…I hear he was very cool, down to earth, and easy to talk to!

John, where did you come across that story? Was the blogger you?
I ask because if Serra is the one telling this story, then that is shameless self promotion.
If it was a “random blogger” from another site, there is no way that we can just presume it to be true.
I also find it odd that a blogger would put his phone number on Serra’s site. Was his phone # in his signature, or did he really expect Serra to call him back? Odd.
I think that Serra just going to try and create as many stories as he can to make Matt Hughes seem like a bigger d*ck than he is. That is the entire story line behind the fight.

I would be lying if I said that I know exactly why he posted his # or if it was part of the signature,…I do know that this dude, isnt the type to make up stories….he was extremely shocked to answer his phone sunday and find Serra on the other end. Serra is really a great guy. Most people on see his on screen persona which doesn’t always show him in the best light. I train at one of his BJJ schools. He really cares about his students and makes an effort to meet and remember each and every student. When he notices a student he’s never met before, he introduces himself and makes them feel welcome. He always has a positive attitude and his instruction is top notch. No matter the outcome of Hughes/Serra, as an instructor and coach, he’s a class act. I think you all saw how active and involved he can be as a coach while he was a TUF contestant and a TUF coach.

He went 5 rounds with Hendo, but I don’t think he could have went 5 Sat. night. I think that’s what kept him from being as aggressive as he usually is. I gave round 1 to Jardine but 2 and 3 went to Rampage easily. And its not like Keith made a big deal about it he mentioned it one time. He isn’t saying he got robbed or anything. I thought he did a great job staying in the fight. Give him some props cus that was a war and his next fight will be much better. To me only Carwin and Lesner have more KO power than Rampage so I look to see Jardine let the strikes fly more freely next time.

What fight was you watching? The first round was close. Could have been a draw imo but Page easily won the last 2 rounds. He had 2 take downs and he sent Jardene to the canvas twice with a left hand. So no Page didn’t need the knock down in the last 10 sec. to win the fight but it sure sealed the deal for sure.
by brac on Mar 9, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Apparently the asme fight I was watching. As soon as Jardine got knocked down in the third my first thought was man Jardine just lost in the last 10 seconds. How anyone could score the first for Page is beyond me. Jardine landed more stikes in the first and third round of the fight.
People only like to count power shots when they form their opinion of who won a fight. Power shots are not the only thing that scores points.
I honestly believe that Page is the better fighter. The problem is that he hasn’t been using all of the tools in his arsenal. He has become as someone else put it a “headhunter”. IMO he needs to stop looking for the KO and finish the fight wherever he has to.
I never thought I would say this but I believe Evans and Machida take Page out if he continues fighting like this.

Jardine admitted he followed and succeeded with his game plan.. Perhaps next time he include winning in said plan..

It was nice of that judge to lie to Jardine, I bet he told him that his pet dog didnt die it just moved to a farm in Idaho, too.

It was a close fight, I cant believe Peoples had his score card 30-27, what an injustice he should be fired as a judge.

Jardine’s a tough dude, that being said take your lose and learn to not always rely on the judges decision. Train to finish fights!

the fight was very competitive but not that close. rampage clearly won the fight, even without the last 10 seconds. watch the fight again without comentating.
i dont think rampage gassed this fight. but he was definatley being a little passive in hopes of not eating too many leg kicks.
rampage will be much more explosive against rashad. but rashad will be a very tough fight for him. he is quicker than rampage and better than him at almost every facet of the mma game except boxing and experience.
that said i hope rampage knocks that cocky bastard out. id like to see rashad taken down a few levels with the obscene smack talking and crotch grabbing.

If Page can handle Hendo’s wrestling then im pretty sure he can handle Rashad on the ground np.

Definitely not a lot of luv’ for Rashad from fans’ I think Rampage is going to have to be at his absolute best to take out Rashad, I don’t want to hear any excuses this time from Rampage if he loses.

Rampage won but I do not see how Cecil scored it 30-27?
by ognitinoc on Mar 10, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions
Page won every round. The expectation from Page is that he’s going to knock his opponent out everytime. If we don’t see that then we think he’s fighting like S*. I like to see him win fights like this(which won’t be everytime). When guys make a mistake against Page…they pay by being knocked out. If they don’t then Page typically wins by hanging in a throwing his power shots.
