UFC 96 fighter paydays and salaries for 'Jackson vs.Jardine'

MMAmania.com has received the fighter payouts for UFC 96: "Jackson vs. Jardine" from the Ohio Athletic Commission (OAC) for the event held on March 8 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Former light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson was the top earner, hauling in a $325,000 purse for outpointing Keith Jardine in the main event of the evening.

Heavyweight competitor Gabriel Gonzaga and light heavyweight Brandon Vera shared a spot for the next highest purse with $60,000. Gonzaga fell to surging goliath Shane Carwin while Vera kicked Michael Patt's legs into the fourth row.

Here are all the complete UFC 96 payouts:

Quinton Jackson -- $325,000 ($225,000 to show, $100,000 to win)
Keith Jardine -- $55,000
Quinton Jackson defeated Keith Jardine via unanimous decision

Pete Sell -- $12,000

Matt Hamill -- $40,000 ($20,000 to show, $20,000 to win)
Mark Munoz -- $12,000

Gray Maynard -- $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)

Tim Boetsch -- $12,000

Brandon Vera -- $60,000 ($30,000 to show, $30,000 to win)
Michael Patt -- $5,000
Brandon Vera defeated Michael Patt via TKO (leg kicks)

Shane Nelson -- $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Aaron Riley -- $6,000
Shane Nelson defeated Aaron Riley via TKO (strikes)

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. For example, fighters receive bonuses for "Submission of the Night," "Fight of the Night," and others.

In fact, UFC President Dana White announced at the post-event press conference that Hamill earned a $60,000 bonus for his stoppage of Munoz. Jackson and Jardine each earned an extra $60,000 for their scrap. By the end of the night, no fighter had tapped, snapped or napped -- so no submission bonus was awarded.

The total base fighter payroll for the UFC 96 was $762,000. The 17,033 fans in attendance paid a collective $1.8 million to watch the festivities live.

good to see Jardine making more than 14K a fight finally!! He was by far the most underpaid fighter for a long time t

Nice to see Quinton getting his dough too. He sure negotiated a good contract when he came over. I think some of it has to do with the personality that comes with Jackson and the fans it attracts too.

Good for him.

by Ca$z on Mar 9, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

McArthur: I was thinking the exact same thing as soon as I saw the salaries.

Ca$z: Skill wise, Page easily deserves that kind of money, but I do think you are correct that his engaging personality is also a part of the financial package he was offered by the UFC. Anyone know if Page is getting ppv percentages yet? He should! Page alone was probably responsible for 90% of the ppv sales for this event!

by john on Mar 9, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I am surprised that Miller is already making $9,000. NOt that I dont think he deserves it, but I thought IFL fighters were lowballed… I expected him to make about $5,000.

Carwin: I wonder how many fights he has left on his UFC contract. HOw many fights has he had in the UFC? Come negotiation time, he is going to command a nice pay raise…Probably up to $60,000 base pay.

Vera: He is only making a base pay of $30,000??…. I dont think he deserves more, but when did he get a pay cut? I remember him collecting 6 figures

by john on Mar 9, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

good call…his base used to be 125K

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

OUCH!!! I hope he gets back to his old ways, and becomes a contender again. I love his personality, and he’s fun to watch when he’s on his game.

by LJ on Mar 9, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Hell yea, think it was before his fight with Reese andy. Good to see him take a notch down. Think he changed his management to someone else from Mark Dion who is currently in the process of ruining KJ’s career.

by NameNotRequired on Mar 9, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

John, the only reason Vera is still in the UFC is because he took that pay cut. And it probably doesnt help that he was on the undercard. I am assuming they gave Miller a little raise because he was the only one stepping up on short notice and he was winning.

Carwin wont get 60 yet, maybe 30 and 30 but that would be too high for him. He JUST quit his day job on sunday.

I’m sure he does.

here we go with the complaints…did anyone file away the write up I wrote about salaries? Someone had said they’d do that, so that we don’t have to have the same argument with the same tools every event! lol, that makes no sense, we argue every day!!

by kevin on Mar 9, 2009 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

not complaining but actually comending the brass for giving him an overdue raise

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

John, I got to hand it to you, when you like a fighter, you go all out. Im loving all your comments about rampage almost as much as I love it when Fedor fights! I’m a fan of guys, but I call it down the middle and keep it real, you should be banished from commenting on your favorite fighters…except that the comments are so friggin amusing!!!

by kevin on Mar 9, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

All I got to say is that Rampage won THAT FIGHT, HANDS Down! NOthing else matters! Unless you are trying to dispute that, which I dont think your are delusional enough to do….then lets just move on to a more interesting debate. I cant stand the controversy on this site that follows EVERY Single ppv! Even when fights aren’t that close, controversy still follows. I dont think we should be arguing about the outcome of the page fight…anyone with a pair of eyes, should see Rampage won that fight, unless you let Shads Biased commentary construe your view..I am burnt out on the Page fight…please lets discuss something else!

Hell even a 1 sided beatdown like GSP vs. Bj Penn 2….was followed my tons of controversy. Just once, I would like for everyone to agree on an outcome of a main event…I probably got a better chance at wishing for world peace…hahahah

where’s the contraversy? the whole lost in the last ten seconds is just what a judge told him, rashad said the same thing, but keith did not say that he thought he won that fight. your rite! rampage won, end of story. your sure get pissy some times.

by Blazy J on Mar 9, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

the scary thing is that a judge told him that.. what the hell was that judge looking at!? If Rampage would have lost that fight i would have never watched another UFC.. 30-27 , maybe 29-28 if you’re a poor judge but that didn’t happen in the last 10 sec he had that third round won long before..

I still think Jardine is underpaid…

by Neeko on Mar 9, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

me too….

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah how many main events have they put Jardine in? whats the guy got to do to get a pay raise? Sure he’s making 3 times more than he used to but consistently making 5 times less base pay than your opponents has got to eventually be disheartening.

by JRE on Mar 9, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

what’s he gotta do…..win big fights. This guy has had more of a chance to make a name for himself than any fighter in the UFC. He keeps getting name opponents but has inconsistent results.

UFN-4 Stephan Bonnar- Loss
UFF-3 Wilson Gouveia- Win
UFC-66 Forrest Griffin- Win
UFC-71 Houston Alexander- Loss
UFC-76 Chuck Liddell- Win
UFC-84 Wanderlei Silva- Loss
UFC-89 Brandon Vera- Win
UFC-96 Rampage- Loss

This guys has had all the chances in the world to put himself in there for a title shot and start making big money but he isn’t getting it done. Put together a win streak in the UFC and then complain about money.

by Crowls on Mar 9, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats harsh man, He’s out there breaking his back for our entertainment and is for sure making the UFC rich, by being the guy facing their marquee fighters in main events. I just think a company like Zuffa should be able to make their fighters financially secure, not only themselves.

by JRE on Mar 9, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

bull, he made 55k just to show up the other night, had he won, i’m sure he’d have made another 55k. He cost himself. Even without the win, he made 115k. Fighters should be fighting 4 times a yr in my opinion. That means if he won 3 out of 4(which should be expected) fights a year at his current contract he’d make 385k. That’s well within the highest tax bracket. He’s been given multiple opportunities, and each time he’s really close to breaking thru, he has a set back. That’s not Dana or the UFC’s problem.

by Crowls on Mar 9, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and that 385k would be without any Fight/KO of the night bonuses. Not to mention the undisclosed bonuses the UFC pays out. If this guys wins fights, he’s gonna make over a half a million dollars a year. You guys gotta stop lookin at it with the attitude that baseball players make 25+ million a year. Despite what you want to believe, the revenue is not there for those payouts. And the UFC continually reinvests to grow their business and the sport in general. You all seem to think that the UFC is a “billion dollar company” meaning that they are clearing close to that each year and Dana and the Fertittas are just chopping up all the cash and laughing their way to the bank. They pay themselves as employees of the company, and they rightfully make high salaries. They aren’t however, just absorbing all the profits and keeping the fighters down.

You are fully aware of my post and my mma knowledge….you on the other hand aren’t even a blip on the radar….Only time 1 of your post gets noticed is when you attack someone personally! I dont like the name calling. As many of you know, I am always down to debate mma topics….If you attack me personally, I fire back once or twice, but I am not going to get in a long name calling debate with you. To each his own! Last thing I am is an internet tough guy…when I call myself a MONSTER, I mean it in terms of debating mma topics….not tough guy crap! I have been on this site forever, and not once have I EVER talked about how tough I am Physically!

You sound like Brandon Vera when he was calling out LEGENDS like Chuck liddell after his 1st fight! hahahaha!

Im done with this!~

DirtyMl: One thing, I can Promise you is that I NEVER lie about myself personally On this site! You dont believe that statement….ask around. See what High school I used to play for and it should easy to figure out what NBA/NFL players I know…I prefer not to do the whole name drop thing… Matter of fact, I will make it easy for you. I played at Roman Catholic HIghschool in Philly PA from 1997-2000…shouldnt be hard for you to figure it out! The last thing anyone can accurately say is that I lie about myself personally!

Kevin: also didnt used to believe me, but I proved him wrong….

FYI: Half of the time, when you think I am talking crap….all I am really doing is quoting a line from a song, and you get your panties in a bunch? hahahaha!

Is this the dump on John thread? Long overdue if you ask me.

Your opinions don’t annoy me (even though I rarely agree with you). What annoys me about you, John, is your desperate need for attention. You are all over this site and it’s clear from your posts that you think very highly of yourself.

I don’t post that much, but I’ve been coming to this site since probably 2005. So, I’ve been annoyed by your posts for a long time.

John makes things interesting and despite his bias towards his favorites he does bring a lot to the table here imo. Don’t think it would be the same without him

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL what’s funny about all of this is the people that think their posts are somehow more valid than John’s or anyone else’s. Then they accuse him of “thinking highly of himself” or being an egomaniac. That’s the pot calling the kettle black. Hypocrites abound when it comes to blog sites and Mania has no shortage of its own.

Politics, Religion & Racist remarks & name calling should be off-limits and people should expect to get put in their place if they step outside of that boundary. AT the same time, all else is fair game.

We’re here to discuss MMA not grammar, not a fellow bloggers “ego” and we shouldn’t be tearing each other down just because we disagree.

the point of reposting was so that he would see it. plain and simple. I should have been the bigger man and let it go, but i was angry with the way that he had disrespected me on the other page so instead of risking him not seeing my response I reposted on this thread so I could really stick it to him good and know that he would see it as well as others ( so they also would see what a douche bag he is ). I guess it worked cause last I heard from him was that he would never come here again and he was moving out of town or something? Anyway later I was planning on killing his parents and cooking them into chili, and then feeding him the chili in front of Fedor and Rampage. When he found out he would cry in front of them and I would drink his tears. (Just joking any feds who might be reading)

I think this site got ripped off. I mean we lost JOhn and in return we get JRE? HOw does that make this site better?

John might rip someone in an mma argument, but thats a debate. One thing I can say about John is all the man wants to do is talk mma….He gets attacked on a daily basis, usually he fires back once or twice, and then I constantly see him being the bigger man and ignoring the rest of the comments and just move on to the next mma topic. Check how many people on this site respond to john’s post on a daily basis, and then try to act like he isnt a valuable asset to this site… I dont blame John at all….

If you are reading this, come back John. This site would not be the same without you!

All I know about your mma knowledge is that when Rampage or one of your other crushes says something in the press you get all wet over it and copy and paste it. Your no Rogan, you just look stuff up on web sites and repeat what you heard on other websites. You think your a king and a monster, but I dont give a F*ck- All you do is post more often than everyone else, so that makes you a scary monster?? The guy that posted under me last time nailed it. you need to check the ego (the only thing monster about you) and stick to the copy and paste trick. I have been coming to this website well before they made the switch from UFCMania and back then there was a similar As*hole calling himself MoreThanUFC- very similar to yourself- posted way more than anyone else and thought it made him somehow bad*ss. GET A F*CKING LIFE JOHN!!!!!!!!!
by the way my "awakening a monster in you" is in no way scary or intimidating or whatever your goal was with that, So take a step back and LITERALLY F*CK YOUR OWN FACE!

Looks like we got ourselves some thread beef!

Put em up mofo! Its a throwdown…loser leaves town. lol

C-mon McArthur these blog fights are kinda fun! Me and Brendan went at for a little while. Introvert with all his negativity made it fun to bash him.

by JV on Mar 9, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

ya, where is introvert? Its cool JV, I just like to be able to declare winners in these arguements (which I luv too)…its just that you can’t declare a winner when there is only name calling! Know what I mean man ;)

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I got ya homie! Ill declare that JRE schooled john in the argument! And john might be able to school us all with MMA news! Hey but I want to know wheres B.W.?

Man lots of blog fighting today, John bolted after a few rnds, I never had a problem with the John, it takes all kinds to make the world go ’round.

by DAVE A on Mar 10, 2009 3:29 AM EDT up reply actions

so we lose a valuable contributor like John, and in return we are left with JRE who only attacks people personally, and brings very little to the table in terms of mma.

We lost john, and in return we get JRE? This site has been robbed! Not a fair trade at all.

If you are reading this post: come back John! You are more appreciated on this site than you know!

broken record much dave?

by JRE on Mar 10, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

he is just doing what you do, which is making sure you see his responses. im not fan of “john” i think he is a bit much sometimes and a bit hard on peeps who disagree with him. saying that, his “breaking news” is quite rad and always welcome. i dont care how he gets it, he just gets it and that means i dont have to check a dozen sites myself each day. i come to this site for MMA news. john gives us that, you just seem to harp on about everything but.

WOW, looks like I missed a little scuffle over the past few days.

A mention of MTU – haven’t seen that for a loooooong time. That means that JRE has been coming here for a while now. MTU was pretty stuck up and pretty easy to annoy. I don’t know he he was actually freinds with Mania at some point or what, but they had a falling out and MTU started his own website because I guess he thought he can do it better than the masters at mania. I THINK I went to his site once a couple years ago. I doubt it even exists anymore.

by ViolentMike on Mar 9, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

What did you think of the fights Mike???

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought that it was a pretty good event. Not the best, not the worst. However, when comparing the event to how people were expecting it to be because it lacked “star power” and “marquee matchups”, it was very good. People always think that big names on a card means its going to be good. That is NEVER the case, and there are lots of examples of it.

I was impressed with Gray Maynard’s standup. I thought that he would lay on Miller for the decision. I did not expect him to out strike Miller for the whole fight.

I had high hopes for Mark Munoz. His college wrestling is at a totally different level than Hamill’s, but this isn’t college wrestling, this is mma. WOW – where did that head kick come from??? One thing is for sure, Hamill is just as strong as they come at 205 lbs.

Way to go Shane Carwin! Once Gabe got on top of Shane I thought he was DONE. But no, he muscles his way up and KO’s Gabe with one straight ARM punch. Simply Amazing power. Who is next up for Shane? Title shot? Or winner of Cain/Herring? Kongo?

Did Pete Sell steal a family hierloom from the Brown family? As Amir would say, “Matt Brown by MURDER”. I also thought that it was an absolute TRAVESTY that Yves rushes in and grabs the waist of Brown when he goes to finish off Sell, and then lets Sell stand up and lets the fight continue – WHAT A JOKE! If Yves was reffing the Kos/Thiago fight, I’d be a couple hundred buck richer right now. Yves is usually on top of his game too.

I have not seen the Riley/Nelson fight either, but I heard it was an awful stoppage. Needless to say, I had a few bucks on Riley…

Kendall looked good. Was that really the first time he knocked someone down with strikes?

For the main event, I can’t believe one judge said Jardine lost it in the last 10 seconds. I had Rampage up 30-27. I mean, even if that one judge did give it to Jardine, Rampage still would have won the split. I came out of that fight most impressed with Jardine’s chin – it actually held up. Rampage truely has become 1 dimensional. He is simpy a boxer that uses his wrestling to avoid the ground.

I enjoyed Rashad and Rampage smack talking in the center of the octagon as well.

by ViolentMike on Mar 9, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

VM – It was 2 judges not one that had Rampage pulling out the decision in the end. If Jardine could have pulled out the last round he would have won the fight. 2 of the 3 judges scored the fight 29-28, and I can only assume that the first round is the one they gave to Jardine.

by GregC on Mar 9, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Great post!!! The only explanation I can come up with regarding the Yves double stoppage in the Brown/Sell fight was that he rushed in to simply get a look at Sell and NOT stop it. He noticed Sell might be Ok and let it go on. He did come flying in at a higher speed than normal from behind meaning he had to rush to get a look at Sell’s face to determin his next course of action which was obviously to let the fight continue. After that, Sell was on his feet so Yves saw no reason to stop it till he fell at the end.

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

GregC, but only one judge said that his decision was based on the final 10 seconds. No one knows how the other judge that had it 29-28 Rampage would have scored it had Jardine not gotten dropped again in the final seconds.

The MMA market is so over saturated with fighters that unless you made a huge name for yourseslf before the sport got this big, you will always make crap for money. Also 3 losses and your out of the UFC. WEC is like 40% less per fight..

I don’t know what all the squabbling is about up there, but keep in mind the comments section is for people’s comments — whether you agree with them or not.

Focus on the MMA (not each other) and the discussions will be much more rewarding.

Besides, I don’t care who you know (or in Kevin’s case, who you blow). Ha! Zing! Broke my own rule!

I’m not going to engage you unless you first apologize for all the mean things you said about me two years ago when I called the script for “Never Submit” ill-conceived.

When is that movie (starring Andrei Arlovski) coming out by the way? Oh, that’s right, it isn’t. And AA is not the UFC champ, nor is he the WAMMA champ.

Man you just can’t get a break these days, can you?

by Jesse Holland on Mar 9, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Way to hold a grudge Holland! I’m glad you didn’t engage me, dodged a bullit there.
I thought I said meaner things about your ill reported tv sponsorship of AA blog and you pulled it a few years ago, but I guess you are over that one.

by theCloser on Mar 10, 2009 4:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Jesse, just because you and me have shot each other email before doesn’t mean you can post your dreams about me…thanks for thinking of me!! lol!

You stalking my Facebook account does not qualify as exchanging Emails, and stop showing up at local MMA events and telling everyone you’re me…it’s time to let go…

by Jesse Holland on Mar 9, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

ouch, I thought our conversations on facebook were cool man, that one hurt. I don’t know if the “local show” comment is true, but if someone is riding your name into local shows, I want to meet that loser!! I personally have never been to a show! Why so hostile today Jesse???

by kevin on Mar 9, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

oh shit, now that was a burn.i like your post kevin but you are a stalker. lol

lol stalker I am not Roy! And if I were, I’d be stalking hot lating girls, not Jesse Holland. I think he’s joking…we’ve actually had some decent conversations (via facebook), so this “bashing” came out of left field!

by kevin on Mar 9, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, I can take it, but sarcasm sometimes doesn’t translate well, and you were obviously serious with these guys getting personal. I’m cool Jesse, don’t worry! Did someone actually say they were you at a local show though or was that a joke too?

wow~

i cant believe i actually read all that!!^^

i must be a big time loser….well? it was funny as hell though!

the best part was jesse’s little thing at the end~ that had me in stitches..

i have taken my fair share of ‘cyber bullys’ in my day ~ but i must say that jre goof took it too far and i will forever remember his laughable attempt at calling someone out..

is he really that insecure that he had to do that??

by stinky~fingers on Mar 10, 2009 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

No, i’m not insecure. I gave him a dose of his own medicine. He couldn’t take it, end of story. You can say it was me “calling him out” (I didn’t challenge him to a contest so it wasnt calling him out) and you can say it was laughable (I got a good laugh out of it;) ) but hey life goes on.

hahaha~ i cant believe u actually came back here to read ur masterpiece..

that would definitely be insecure!! lol

i saw ur name pop up on the recent comments and i thought?

hummmm? i wonder what this goof has to say today..lol

then i noticed u were posting in this thread.. again i laughed

then i clicked and saw u replied to me..lmao

I have read this entire thread.

JRE – I am not going to fault you for calling somebody out. I agree that there is a frat boy/cool guys club “vibe” that certain posters seem to lay on just a bit thick sometimes…

john – I appreciate your posts and I am always entertained by them.

Dear UFC and more specifically Dana White,

I would like to thank you for bringing together a majority of the best fighters on the planet. Your overall production value for PPV’s, as well as your ability to match fights between top fighters is spectacular!

Yeah, I noticed how upgraded the graphics were on T.V. for UFC 96. Very impressive! You’re finally looking better on my T.V. than PPV boxing matches. I knew you guys could do it. Also your on-air talent is amazing. Bruce Buffer sets an electrifying tone for each fight, letting fans and competitors alike know that a war is set to begin. Mike Goldberg brings a strong sense of authenticity, and is terrific at calling the events. Joe Rogan’s insights into the action, as well as the excitement he brings when calling fight victories, really makes me feel as if I’m in the ring with the fighters. I am very definitely a UFC fan!

However my allegiance is not without criticism. If MMA is the greatest hand-to-hand combat sport on the planet, then why you shouldn’t you treat it as such? Today’s MMA stars make only a fraction of what their boxing counter-parts make. The time has come for the UFC to not only lead in gate receipts, but also in dedication to their fighters. Headliners should easily be earning one million a fight, and every undercard fight should also see major increases up to a minimum amount of $30,000 per fighter / per fight. $3,000 is a ridiculous amount of money to pay a warrior who is risking permanent injury simply to entertain us! What are you guys thinking? Sooner or later these underpaid journeyman, and established superstars will revolt against this completely bogus pay structure. And you can guess which side the fans will favor.

I’m asking you to step up to the plate because I like you, Dana White. I believe that the UFC’s great success is a product of your innovative leadership and overall attitude. I appreciate the way you’ve guided the organization to the tops of the fighting elite. You have given me a combat sport to get excited about again. This is why I am asking you to drastically restructure your current pay scale. If you lead the way not only in production value and fighter match-ups, but also in fighter compensation, then what organization will ever be able to catch you? Affliction may not be sustainable as a business model, but as long as an organization exists that can at least out-pay the UFC, then you will never be able to secure all the best talent. Ahh-hem, Fedor. Why take a chance on long-term success with a strategy that was never intended for long-term growth? I can understand the UFC taking a majority percentage of profit back when it’s MMA events where a risky business investment. However today’s fights are nearly all immediate sell-outs, and your PPV numbers consistently beat boxing. Who do you guys think you’re kidding? I’m afraid only yourselves. Please have the guts to make this right. It’s only my opinion, but I believe that your generosity with your fighters will only lead to a more powerful alliance between the UFC and it’s contracted employees.

Respectfully Yours, Zach Benson
