Patrick Cote talks about next fight after successful knee surgery

Props: FightNetwork.com

Quoteworthy:

"I will be back in the gym fully training in three weeks or so.... I want to fight someone in the top-five or top-10.... I want Alan Belcher or the winner of Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva.... I would love to fight Vitor Belfort if he came to the UFC."

Former number one middlweight contender Patrick Cote -- who underwent major knee surgery in November 2008 -- talks about his road to recovery and possible future opponents. "The Predator" has been sidelined since shredding his knee while inside the Octagon opposite reigning division champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 back in October. The bout resulted in a technical knockout loss for the Canadian, which he feels may have gone his way if the freak accident never happened. The 185-pound class is now teeming with possible title contenders, making his road back to the summit more than likely a long and difficult one.

happy to see Cote recovering…Cote/Wand would be cool but I would love to see Cote KO Belcher whom I cannot stand

he wants to fight a top 10 or or top 5 guy so he calls out Belcher? I dont get it!

by john on Mar 9, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Why did he call out Alan Blecher? Haha!

by Fugitive on Mar 9, 2009 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

he wants the winner of franklin vs. silva? ummm, maybe the loser. either way, he would lose in his first fight back with either guy.

by tonydanza on Mar 9, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I say book cote vs. SEXYama!

by john on Mar 9, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

also, the guy has been out of the spot light for so long…he finally gets interviewed and the best he could do is Mention fighting Vitor, a fighter NOT signed to the UFC that probably wont ever return to the UFC?

There are about 10 Great match ups awaiting Cote, yet this fool is worried about Vitor?

by john on Mar 9, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure he doesn’t care who he fights. I’d like to see him and Marquardt personally.

by c-war on Mar 9, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s interesting that he mentions Vitor because just a few months ago it was reported that Vitor was in talks for a possible UFC return. Could this mean that there’s some truth to that?

by Machine on Mar 9, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

John, he doesn’t seem worried about Vitor at all…The state of Affliction is doubtful and Cote knows this…fighting and beating Vitor after his KO of Lindland would be a BIG deal, Vitor will probably end up in the UFC or Strikeforce so Cote threw his name in the hat…dude’s had a lot of time to think

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

When did he say he was worried about Vitor? I can see him signing again, considering there’s notmuch else for him outside the UFC. There are a few guys, but Vitor is on par with UFC MW’s, even better thatn most. If Leites is the top contender, then Belfort should be in the UFC.

by GodDamnMike on Mar 9, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry guys, but I dont ever think we will see Vitor back in the UFC. Affliction has at least 1 more show left that VITOR will be a part of….with his recent success at middleweight and the drastic improvement of the UFC middleweight division…I think Vitor is much more valuable to strikeforce than the UFC.

Also, I am not ready to proclaim that Affliction is done. Fedor’s contract will expire after the next show, and if they dont re-sign him it will be hard for them to survive…but they did just sign Din Thomas to a 3 fight deal, so to me that at least tells me that they aren’t alreday p[lanning for Affliction 3 to be their last show….At least they are trying to survive, and It will be hard, but I hope that they pull it off!

On a sad note: I hear that DREAM 7 rating were TERRIBLE!!! I sure hope that they survive, because I dont really like Sengoku but I love Japanese mma!

Belcher is on a 4 fight winning streak, which is rare in the 185lb division. If Belcher wins another 1 or 2 in a row, he could be looking at a title shot….as strange as this sounds lol.

by big D on Mar 9, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Im with you on that McArthur. Belcher is a f*ckin bell-end (another way of saying prick here in the UK). Always happy to hear a bit of fighter bashing where Belcher is concerned.

It might be a nice warm up for Cote to get back into the swing of things plus he has just beat Kang so he probably thinks his stock has risen a bit.

He definately doesn’t want Anderson kickin that knee just yet!

by Ca$z on Mar 9, 2009 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

War Cote!

by Jee on Mar 9, 2009 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

im interested to see how cote does when he comes back to the newly stacked mw division. u got maia, nate, now wandy, the king spider and belcher slowly rising to the top but i dont think he can hang with the other names mentioned. cote is a strong guy and should settle well but we’ll see

by denniskuderjr on Mar 9, 2009 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know why Cote has to win his way back to contention. He did everything he was supposed to do. He suffered a freak injury in a title fight a lot of people thought he was winning when he went down.

I can see him taking a warm up fight to get back into fight shape, but I think it’s markedly unfair to expect him to win 3 before he gets another shot at Anderson.

You also have to think that Anderson wants a chance to redeem himself after pulling a Starnes against Cote.

by Paulska on Mar 9, 2009 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

“a lot of people thought he was winning”

This is laughable. Did people really start posting that they felt he was winning that fight? Did I miss something? John, RoB, NNR, Kevin, Nathan…somebody help me out with this. Were people really saying they thought Cote was winning against Silva?

I’ll admit he was doing MUCH better than expected but “winning”? Not at all. That’s just as dilusional as the people saying Jardine was winning the Rampage fight.

by Machine on Mar 9, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

he wasn’t winning but it would be tough to say he was losing too…actually, he was losing but…i don’t know. I’d go back and watch again but why?? Nothing even happened.

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

“I’d go back and watch again but why?? Nothing even happened.”

LOL good point. I’ll probably watch it one more time anyway and get all frustrated with Silva not bringing his usual intensity in that fight.

by Machine on Mar 9, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Silva tried. Those big knees that Cote ate would have wobbled quite a few other fighters. Every time he pured it one thick Cote got out of range.

by Space on Mar 9, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Cote’s got one of the best chins in the game (see Leben vs Cote) but I wasn’t rooting for or expecting him to win in any fashion. I knew it would take a series of consecutive strikes (see Silva vs Leben) to finish him and I’m as sure as one can be that Silva would have TKO’d him eventually.

by Colin D on Mar 9, 2009 9:38 AM EDT reply actions

good call colin…MW division is 10x better than it was a year ago

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t just call out Belcher. He also said he would like to fight the winner of Franklin/Wandy. I think he needs one fight and if he wins that he gets another shot at the Spider. He was never hurt in that fight or even in trouble until his knee went out. I think him and Wandy would be a good fight. Franklin doesn’t need to go back down to 185 if he intends on staying at 205 for right now. He is trying to put on a little size and I don’t think it would benefit him trying to cut back down to 185.

by brac on Mar 9, 2009 10:35 AM EDT reply actions

I will help you out with this Machine. Only people who do not understand MMA, or do not study the fights like Paulska think Cote was beating Anderson Silva. That is like saying Cro Cop was winning before he got knock out by Gonzaga. Did Cote make Silva bleed? NO! Did Silva make Cote bleed? Yes! Who connected more? Let the blood speak for itself. Actually, has anyone made Silva bleed in the UFC?

by matt on Mar 9, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

So whoever bleeds first loses the fight? Nobody was winning that dance, and Silva was back pedaling the whole time. If for no other reason Cote was winning for Octagon control.

by jay on Mar 9, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

OK so these people do really exist! I hate to break it to all of the Spider haters but its well documented that Cote was losing on two of the three judges’ scorecards in round one and then losing on all three in round two.

Case closed

they’re like unicorns, leprachans, or Matt Lindland fans

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a spider hater, I’m a huge fan. But his performance in that fight was way off. He didn’t look interested at all. Cote at least looked like he wanted to be there. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that Silva would have decided to fight sooner or later and destroyed Cote, but he didn’t ever get to that point. I was only saying that Matt is retarded if he judges fights on the amount of blood someone loses.

by jay on Mar 9, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

point well taken jay. looks like we were actually on the same page the whole time.

by Machine on Mar 9, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

He took a lot of shots from A silva and didnt go down… I think he can hang with most of the ppl in MW… although he is a one trick pony … i dun think he even kicks just waits for the big punch…

by fuquyo on Mar 9, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

“That is like saying Cro Cop was winning before he got knock out by Gonzaga.”

Pure comedy! So true.

“Actually, has anyone made Silva bleed in the UFC?”

I’m going with a no. Silva’s got a mean chin too. Rich landed some nice shots in both fights and Silva shrugged them off. I know Rich doesn’t have KO power (Nate Quarry fight excluded) but he has very heavy hands.

Does anyone have any idea who Kang might be fighting next??

by GodDamnMike on Mar 9, 2009 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

xavier foupa-pokam in montreal

by J-Rak on Mar 9, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks. I haven’t had a lot of time to browse around the internet and fight cards, been quite busy.
Also, if The Crow can get by Fire-Crotch, does anyone have any idea who he might fight after? I’d love to see The Crow win by TKO. (Elbows)

by GodDamnMike on Mar 9, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m excited to see The Crow. I’d like to see him elbow his way to the top of the division!

I was soooooo pissed at Kang for gassing in that Belcher fight. I hope Alan sent him a thank you card afterward to thank Kang for handing over the win on a silver platter. And that fool Belcher actually thinks he proved something in that fight. Yeah, he proved Kang could punch him & take him down at will.

Cote looks like he’s been hitting the poutine pretty hard.

by Jeremyjackson on Mar 9, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

patrick cote is my fav fighter and i hope he makes a full recoverey and he ill do good against any opponent he goes up against and the only reason he mentioned vitor was because dana white was thinking about getting him to come over to the UFC to fight anderson.
