Josh Neer vs Kurt Pellegrino UFC 101 bout planned for August 8

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm that a lightweight match up between 155-pound veterans Josh Neer (25-7-1) and Kurt Pellegrino (13-4) is in the works for the upcoming UFC 101 planned for August 5.

Since posting a 2-3 record in the UFC, "The Dentist" won six of seven fights outside the promotion before returning to the Octagon and defeating Din Thomas by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 13. He followed that up with a split decision loss to Nate Diaz, but not before earning "Fight of the Night" in their three-round war at UFC Fight Night 15 back in September.

Neer, who promises "Win, lose or draw I’m going to bring it," would go on to nab his second straight "Fight of the Night" in a win over Mac Danzig at FN 17, which no doubt prompted the UFC to award him with a recent contract extension for his efforts inside the cage and his ability to electrify the crowd with his aggressiveness.

It's going to take every ounce of that talent for Neer to get past the crafty Pellegrino. "Batman" has flirted with being recognized as a top competitor in a very crowded division on numerous occasions throughout his career; however, he has been plagued by inconsistency just as he reaches the precipice of contendership.

After being submitted by Nate Diaz at Fight Night 13 last April, Pellegrino was able to string together two consecutive wins including a solid unanimous decision nod over Thiago Tavares at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" back in September and a submission victory over Rob Emerson at FN 17 just last month.

A win over the surging Neer would unquestionable re-establish him as a force to be reckoned with.

UFC 101 is tentatively scheduled for a first ever trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and could feature a long awaited "legends" fight between Randy "The Natural" Couture and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details as they become available.

Both of these guys are tough as nails and have ZERO quit and them. These are the kind of matchups I like to see because you KNOW it will be entertaining to say the least.

as stated below “if the neer that beat danzig shows up, neer has this one in the bag” agreed! kurt is tough but getting dominated by stevenson, subbed by diaz, then a not so good performance against emerson, i gotta think that neer should take this. neer went the distance with diaz and was never in any trouble, and i dont think that pellegrino is going to put him in any danger either

No problem with this match up, but I would have prefered to see Neer vs. Joe daddy! Still this is a good match up

by DAVE on Mar 10, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow I can not wait for this one!! Primarily because Neer beat my boy Danzig and Pellegrino is my other favorite fighter at 155, So in a weird way when Pellegrino kicks his *ss it will be like he’s getting revenge for Danzig ( at least to me) I’m dying to see Neer get handled.

agreed, great fight. i’ll take neer

by Crowls on Mar 9, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely the more grittier fighter but i think the wrestling will make a difference. Then again Batman isn’t a clutch fighter by any means.

should be a good tilt…I like Kurt but I gotta think he is on his way out with a loss….now that I think of it wasn’t he cut a couple weeks ago???

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

Myes i think he was, strange.

Anyway i got Neer winning.

by Lester the Pimp on Mar 9, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

On his way out! He’s won his last two in a row and his only losses since his debuet were to Joe Stevenson (when he broke his hand) and Nate Diaz, who caught him in a triangle, in a fight he was dominating.

Luigi viorovanti got cut. I get them mixed up some times

by Wingblade on Mar 9, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a great fight! Two scrappers who have skills in all areas. That being said I give Kurt the advantage in the wrestling, on the ground, and possibly even in the stand up. Kurt is one of my favorite fighters, so I’m biased, but I think he should take this one.

I think Neer will take this easy.

by dayzah on Mar 9, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions

yah i think neer is just a notch above kurt… maynard would of been a better fight for him.

by Toad on Mar 9, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

if the neer that showed up against danzig shows up then neer will take this easily

by tuffguy01 on Mar 9, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Tough and great fight. I don’t believe that either fighter will take this easy. Kurt is tough as hell. I was very surprised and impressed at how dominating Neer was over Danzig. Complete domination, made Danzig look very bad.

Sorry to get off topic fellas but did anybody see where Matt Hughes said he may move up to middleweight with a desire to fight Anderson Silva? That guy is unbelievable. I remember when he critiqued one of Anderson’s recent fights by saying that he continued to see holes in his game. Are you kidding me?
There is no way Dana would let Matt in the ring to fight Anderson even if he won a fight or two at middleweight. Matt would get hurt really bad. As usual, I’m sure this is just some b.s. that he is spewing out his mouth.

Pellegrino by UD, 30-27 all the way!

by JonnyBoy on Mar 9, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Should be a good scrap. Neer by sub.

by LJ on Mar 9, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

looks like Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Belcher at UFC 100

by McArthur on Mar 9, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

id rather see that on the card after but hell they probably want to make akiyama a star

but i got neer winning a dominate fight. neer looked way more impressive over danzig, and batman looked pretty bad against emerson

The dentist shall rearrange Pellegrino’s teeth.

WAR BATMAN!!

by Bill Maher on Mar 9, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent fight, tough one to call. The dentist is always entertaining.

by Wesley Pipes on Mar 9, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

I really like Batman, but I think Neer will be too much for him to handle. He looked pretty dangerous vs Danzig.

by Scott on Mar 9, 2009 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

This is the best fight ever…both these dudes bring their A game each and every time…dont care who wins..i like them both the same..

by What? on Mar 10, 2009 8:49 AM EDT reply actions
