Frank Mir injured and out of UFC 98 fight against Brock Lesnar

Interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir sustained a knee injury while training for his upcoming fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 98: "Lesnar vs. Mir 2" from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23 and has been forced out of the main event.
Mir will require time to heal after recently undergoing minor knee surgery to repair the damage. He is expected to make a full recovery. There is no timetable for a return; however, the good news is that it could be as soon as this summer.
Therefore, the highly anticipated heavyweight title unification match appears to be temporarily on hold -- not canceled -- for now.

everyone hates me for being a Brock lover but I don’t give a shit. Now you want to put Gonzaga or Carwin in the octagon with him? Please! Bring in Fedor. That’s the fight I want to see. Fedor and Mir. Anyone else will get TKO’ed.I am tired of people saying “bring in the chairs and tables”. Brock is a BEAST!!!!! He has enough skill and brute streanth to beat anyone. And the more time that goes bye between fights the better he gets. Hate me, I don’t care.

I may be dumb for saying Lesner(who just beat Randy), and is the best to offer. Well it is true. I win. Shut up and find someone that wants to fight him and not be scared.

In a recent interview, Overeem has stated that he would like to fight in the UFC in the near future. Overeem would ideally like a rematch in 2009 with Chuck Liddell to avenge his PRIDE Total Elimination 2003 knockout loss against him. Overeem was also seen at UFC 93 in Ireland talking to Dana White and indicating he is “ready” to fight in the UFC.maybe overeem is coming, that would be a great fight overeem lesnar.thoughts?

i think its pretty funny that there are zero good match ups in the heavyweight division… can anyone think of ANYBODY that will step up that is deserving? i cant…
by brendan on Mar 6, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No… And it wouldn’t make sense. They HAVE to fight each other. That is why I think GSP/Alves may be booked and this will be delayed until August. They cannot have Hughes/Serra as the Main Event!

Some sites are reporting a knee injury while others are saying it was a back injury. On MMAWeekly Dana White was quoted as saying he hasn’t heard anything about Mir being injured.
Wonder if Mir is messing with Lesnar…

How does Fedor in the UFC make any sense? fedor has an Exclusive contract in the USA with affliction. He owes them 1 last fight….I dont even think Fedor could be a possibility at this point!
Mir is a BIATCH!!!!! Frank Mir = a Fat Matt Serra….fake champions, who get injured only to pro-long their title reign….how about Mir pro-longs his title reign the old fashion way? Try defending it you cHUMP!!!!
by john on Mar 7, 2009 7:38 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
John, you gotta let the hate go. He beat Nog, so what. It would make no sense for him to put this fight off. All that would do is give Brock more time to get better and learn how to defend subs. To act like either of those guys got hurt on purpose to keep the belt longer is absurd.

hence the reason I put 2 after the names! I think if you take away that one good shot, Herring has a good chance at winning. He gets his face broken in the first and survives the whole fight! I think he’s a game opponent and would love to see the rematch, not to mention I see no one else deserving!~
by kevin on Mar 6, 2009 5:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That one punch made Herring not want to fight for the rest of the match. Turtle-defense was all he did that whole time. Lesnar/Herring 2, Kevin would be the only person who watches that fight.

take away that one good shot?why would you do that? That’s like saying take away that one leg kick from Herring to Nog and Nog walks away a clear cut winner….do you think Herring deserves a shot before the winner of Gabe/Carwin? He hasn’t fought since he lost….

Herring is going to fight Cain Valazquez. I am not sure who would make a good replacement. Kongo is certainly possible. He has 2 wins. I think he is scheduled to fight Antoni Hardonk at UFC 97 though. He’d be a good matchup for Lesnar. Brock should be able to put Kongo on his back and pound him out. I think that unless they cancel an already scheduled fight, Lesnar is going to to be taken off of this card.

Are you forgetting that Anderson is also a BJJ Black belt and one of the best (if not the best) striker in MMA. I give Maia a shot, but let us be realistic.
by Jeff on Mar 6, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think Maia is on a different level of BJJ than AS. That being said, his stand up has to improve quite a bit to be able to weather Silva’s, and that’s an understatement. Maia’s problem will be getting inside to get the take down, and honestly, I don’t think at this point he can.
by MM_Eh on Mar 6, 2009 9:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The thing that everyone overlooks about Maia is that not only is his jitz other-worldly good, he’s also left-handed and goes into everything backward. Most left-handed black belts still do everything right-handed because that’s the way they’re taught. Imagine fighting a world class BJJ fighter that has a backward rubber guard, backward arm-locks, gogoplatas, omaplatas, the list is endless
Anderson Silva has great Jiu-jitsu as we’ve seen in the UFC against Travis Lutter and Henderson, but he is paled in comparison by Maia. Maia has the best Jitz in MMA hands down. If Maia could survive the muay thai onslaught long enough to take the fight to the ground, Silva is finished. The transition from mount to triangle against Sonnen was one of the most beautiful executions I’ve ever seen.

They will have to wait. There is no realistic match up they can make. Trust me, NOG has great submission, but Mir showed how to beat him. Knock his ass down, let him get back up, knock his ass down again until he is out of comission.

Get any of the supposed top ranked fighters from Affliction, Tim, AA, Yvel, Barnett, Fedor or any of Fedor’s last five opponents so we can see Brock rip them apart!!
by Puck Head on Mar 6, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Maybe Tim but Brock aint ripping any of the other three apart… especially Fedor.
by BK on Mar 6, 2009 5:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah he is just a 35 pound heavier version of Barnett and faster and stronger? Barnett has the subs and Brock has the better stand up. Brocks a little bit better wrestler too. Barnett has got away with taking guy’s down to the ground and mauling them what would they do against a 285 pound version? Get your head out of your ass BK Brock would destroy all them including Fedor. If Cro Cop fought for affliction he would being rated #2 right now and fighting Fedor garanteed but he decided to come to the UFC and play with the big boy’s LOL.
by Puck Head on Mar 6, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That was the most ill informed post I’ve read in a long time. Barnett would out strike Brock. In fact, I don’t see how Lesnar could beat Barnett. And Brock beating Fedor is laughable. Brock wouldn’t beat AA, Barnett, Fedor, and heck Yvel would probably knock his ass out.

diceman i’d put a wager on brock to run through all of them.. including fedor, just remember how hard randleman slammed him before he got that kimurathen times it by 200 with brock, add the trouble he had with fujita rocking him,and how hong man choi was able to take him down and lay on him,i’d say brocks the one who would dominate all them guys

Brock or Mir would both hand Fedor his first real loss.
by RU486 on Mar 6, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Diceman, I am a big fan of Dice too. But I think Brock would beat Barnett. I mean Cro-Cop beat Barnett 3 times! Barnett is over-rated in my opinion. His last fight on Affliction he didn’t look too impressive. He had the guy mounted for a long time and couldn’t finish him until round 3.
However, Fedor beats Brock as of right now. Brock needs another year of experience to make it interesting against Fedor.
by ProKev on Mar 7, 2009 3:32 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know ProKev Brock would be 50 pounds heavier than Fedor in the Ring, that’s a huge advantage, Stand up skills go to Fedor but because Brock is so big his stand up works well in the ring, If Brock want’s the fight to go to the ground it’s going to the ground maybe his defence against submissions isn’t going to be good enough yet but I know he will be prepared to defend against them. If Brock get’s on top of Fedor do you think Fedor will be able to get out against a wrestler that weighs 50 pounds more? My opinion Brock would win nothing against Fedor but Brock is a Freak.

and pucky boy…try signing in either those or overeem, sergei, big foot, aleks…and lets see what these guys can do to your chump..pathetic!

The best idea is to just move the fight to a different date.
brock doesnt need a new opponent, he needs to fight Frank Mir.
The longer Mir waits, the better Brock will get.
The best idea I heard was already listed above, Machida vs Rashad for title.
Other than that, UFC 98 is basically screwed.

Let’s face it. Kongo is on somewhat of a tear…… sorta….. kinda…… But he is the only heavyweight fighter that A: Doesn’t have a fight booked already. B: Somewhat deserving of a title shot.
Kongo represents a 1 dimensional threat to Lesnar’s chin, but I see that fight being over in under a minute with Lesnar holding kongo’s heart in his hand before taking a bite out of it and spitting at Bruce Buffer…. Who in turn will dodge it with his patented turn.

To say there are no possibilities is silly!! Its whether the ufc will want to put another fighter in front of lesnar or whether they wait for the unification match??
IMO my man Kongo gives lesnar a good fight, im sure hed have the reach advantage?? (correct me if im wrong) and hed have the striking advantage for sure! yes lesnar has the ground advantage, and thats why it makes for a good fight!
Other than that there is the possibility of Carwin/Gonzaga/noguiera….hell even Dos Santos if its for an interesting fight!!
Brock IMO needs to be fighting he needs the octagon time, it does him no favours sitting on the sidelines, yes i hear you with the bjj training, but that doesnt show what will happen in the cage, he needs to fight!!!!

the reason people hate mir is pretty simple, he knocked out one of their precious immortal pride royalty. same reason forrest griffin, a previously christ-like public figure, suddenly had so much negativity towards him after he embaressed shogun…..and again when he beat rampage heh. imagine if randy vs. fedor had happened several years ago when it was first proposed, and randy had won(bear in mind this is hypothetical and im not starting that debate), randy would prolly be getting death threats in the mail from japan, and from all the former pride lovers out there. in a way i feel bad for them, the majority of pride superstars who have come over have not done well at all. and i say majority because i recognize some have done well, and dont feel like listening to the bitching that statement will undoubtedly bring.

The Rashad / Machida fight seems to be the most realistic. Neither fighter is booked.
Penn / Florian would be good too. Look at it this way, BJ Penn last defended his title in May of 2008. Every other time a fighter didn’t defend his belt for a year they made an interim champion. GSP got it when Serra was hurt. Couture got it when Tito dodged Chuck, Nogueira got it when Randy left UFC. If Penn whines and says that he isn’t ready to fight, I say strip his belt, and have Florian fight Sherk for the Interim belt.

Kongo is USELESS! His standup isn’t remotely dangerous. I’ve only see him TKO one guy and that was the legend that is Dan Iversen or something like that. Brocks standup is basic compared to KONGO…Brock cant kick..even his stance isnt tight but yeah he has power but aganist a trained standup fighter he will find it hard…Randy n Herring arent excellent standup fighters
by KING OF THE HILLZ on Mar 7, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I doubt it! Brocks standup IS basic compared to Kongo but if those wrecking ball sized hands hit you, you’re going down whoever you are. Lesnar however IS a grappling monster and basically if he decides to take you down, he will do, due to his sheer size and strength. Nothing Kongo’s kicks will be able to do to prevent it and we all know he has zero ground game especially from his back.

Dana, I know you ands some of your boys watch the MMA message boards. Look if your reading this, you only need to do one thing here to make the biggest fight in UFC history. Contact Affliction and strike a deal or buy out Fedors last fight on his contract (like we records people by out artists pre existing record contracts) This was suppose to be UFC 98, but instead put together 2 more UFC events in between, I suggest one for Spike that can be for our troops in Afghanistan. Then bill this as “UFC 100 – Pride Comes Before The Fall” with "Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar" as the main card!
Mark my words…this will be the biggest UFC event in HISTORY!
This is a no brainer. Affliction is good, young but good and deserves the respect for at least running a good event, as opposed to Showtime and their 3 ring circus they had going on. You so could make this happen!
In addition to this fight, you could totally tap a new vine here too, and also test the waters with the first ever UFC female exposition fight of "Gina Carino vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino"
Last but not least, to keep in the theme of "all things that was “pride” maybe add Wanderlei Silva fight or a Rampage fight on the card. Hell maybe Crocop? Don’t he still owe UFC a fight? He isn’t doing anything major right now, and I’m sure he would love a chance to vindicate his really bad losses in the cage. He needs a opportunity to avenge himself here, and what better way then
Put this fight ANYWHERE in the USA in the biggest arena you can because tickets will be SOLD OUT!
by TacoDave on Mar 7, 2009 12:27 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’ll set aside the grammatical butchering of the english language, and do agree with the Fedor comment! But, you should have quit while you were ahead! Cro cop is washed up, Rampage will be fighting Rashad at “the real” ufc 100 and I want to see women’s mma about as much as I want to watch a double penetration on a mule, plus, cyborg wins easily!

What’s with the Cro Cop is washed up kevin? I garantee he would of been winning against the Affliction HW, Tim and AA included. It’s easy to say but come on he all of sudden entered the UFC and became washed up? He still has the same skills but like many fighters out there has not improved his weaknesses. Fighters know how to defend his style in the UFC and he hasn’t had any answers hopefull he is adding a new diminsion to his game otherwise it will be the same story for him. If the UFC got Yvel that would be a good fight for Cro Cop and the UFC fans?
