Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra made official for UFC 98 on May 23

The UFC today confirmed that arch enemies Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will finally face off in the Octagon to settle their bitter score at UFC 98 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23.
Both former welterweight champions have been sidelined with injuries — Serra sustained an elbow injury in his loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ back in April and Hughes has been nursing a knee injury that he suffered in his loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85: "Bedlam″ back in June.
Complicating the situation even more — as if it needed it — is the fact the Serra and his wife are expecting their first child sometime in April, which is the reason it could not happen sooner.
Serra and Hughes — who are about as opposite as two people can get — were opposing coaches in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 and were supposed to fight at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. However, Serra had to withdraw because of a serious back injury.
The trash-talking has not stopped ever since and will more than likely ratchet up again sooner rather than later with their bout now less than three months away.
The good news this time around is that we now have a firm date, location and event number for the 170-pound showdown — important details that were absent prior to this point.
Finally.

i even think that serra if he does some diet and drop to LH again he will do it fine AND stop pretend u r a striker(yes yes i know it work in the GSP fight) PLEASE USE YOUR BJJ i remember that i really enjoy watching this guy fight on the ground
by JoW on Mar 3, 2009 11:42 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think Serra can beat Hughes on the ground. Remember what Hughes did to Gracie. (Although I also remember what St. Pierre did to Hughes.) Serra is definitely the biggest a$$ and I pray that Hughes has one more good fight left to shut Serra’s big trap once and for all.
by DrPepper on Mar 3, 2009 11:54 PM EST up reply actions
DrPepper, I disagree with you about Serra being an a$$. I think Hughes is the A-hole and I hope Serra puts Hughes into retirement.
Serra calls it like he sees it and that is that Matt Hughes is an A-hole.
by ProKev on Mar 4, 2009 12:00 AM EST up reply actions
DR PEPPER, how can you call Serra an @ss without calling Hughes an @ss as well? Hughes is just as cocky, possibly a bigger mouth and a poorer sport. I have Serra as the lesser of two evils and the underdog as well.
BTW, anyone know if Jardine wins against RAMPAGE will he get the title shot in front of Machida? Thanks
by RedDog on Mar 4, 2009 12:09 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t know, Serra is sick on the ground. There’s a youtube vid of him tapping Gomi with ease in a grappling match.
I am tempted to agree with Jow that he should drop his ’i’m a striker theory’. But saying that i don’t think there is anyone better to keep it on the feet against than hughes.
I’ve got Serra in this fight. Better on the feet and more than enough skills off his back to keep hughes sub attempts/g&p at bay.

i dont really think hughes is as done as ppl say he is
he has lost against 2 of the best fighters in the ww division atm
okay he will probably never be able to beat alves and definitely not GSP but i think he can still hang with the rest of them
i think he will dominate serra

red dog:
if jardine wins then machida gets the next shot because evans and jardine are team mates
but it is possible that they might fight each other if its for the title but i’m pretty sure machida gets next shot if page losses

I like Serra, he is a stand up dude who carries himself with HOnor. HUghes’s is just a classless piece of crap! I hope Serra Knocks his ass into permanent retirement. You guys think I hate Forrest and Mir? Dont get me started on hUghes!!!!
AS for this fight, I could care less if I ever see it. I would actually prefer that they not televise this fight! Co-main event my ass!
whatever happened to Hughes’s twin brother matt? wasnt he supposed to be making his Octagon debut?
Best moment in the history of mma is when Alves blastewd hughes across his chin with that Flying knee. No ending to a fight has ever made me happier!

Personally….I will not be ordering this fight! Too many wrestlers if you ask me!
I want to see Brock Kill MIr! THats the only fight I want to see. If there where other fights that I cared about I would order it….but I wont order it only for the main event. I also wanted to boycott this title fight! I know my 1 man boycott wont change anything…only 1 man boycott to ever succeed was el Mexecutioners 1 man boycott of EliteXC that brought the company crumbling down! hahahaha Mex is the man! Personally, I am happy to boycott this title fight. I dont care how good a match up is, or what kind of bad blood exsist….Only title fights I want to see are the ones involving a true champion and a legit #1 contender….some thing that this match up lacks!
by john on Mar 4, 2009 9:00 AM EST up reply actions
fight card sucks! I wont order it:
Champ Brock Lesnar vs. interim champ Frank Mir (heavyweight title unification)
Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra
Frank Edgar vs. Sean Sherk
Josh Koscheck vs. Chris Wilson
Kyle Bradley vs. Phillipe Nover
James Irvin vs. Drew McFedries
Brandon Wolff vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
Houston Alexander vs. Andre Gusmao
Pat Barry vs. Tim Hague
David Kaplan vs. George Roop
too many wrestlers on this card! Sherk fight is a waste of time! I will that fight be any different than Sherk vs. Tyson?
by john on Mar 4, 2009 9:01 AM EST up reply actions
This card isn’t so bad, there are a lot of good match ups and interesting fights. I do admit that paying for it might not be the greatest idea since you may only get 3 or 4 fights max but don’t hate on wrestlers.

Has a classy guy ever proclaimed himself classy? Has GSP ever said yeah I’m a stand up guy and all but this dude is just a douche? No and Serra is a douche, I know a lot of people hate Hughes and a lot of people hate Serra so this fight is just for people to see someone they hate get beat and sent packing. I do believe the UFC hired Mark because they didn’t want any other MMA company paying him to fight when he looks so similar to Matt.

cant stand wrestlers!
I would order this card if this were the televised line up:

Nover vs. bradley
Irvin vs. McFedries
wolf vs. YOshida
Berry vs. hague

BK, that is such a stupid thing to say. Who is the only guy Serra has lost to in the past 2 years? GSP. Who is the only 2 fighters to beat Hughes in the past million years? GSP and Alves. These guys, at least Hughes is far from done.
by Derek on Mar 3, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions
true but who do you think hughes and serra would be able to beat other than eachother in the stacked ufc WW division… thats actually in the top of the food chain… fitch, koschek, alves??? definitely not… so i think that their glory days are pass them both
by JR on Mar 4, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions
and in those million years Hughes has lost to Dennis Hallman (twice), Jose Landi-Jons, and Penn. Serra has only fought twice in the past two years and he’s 1 and 1. What’s so great about that?

maybe Hughes isn’t done, but there are many guys that are much better than him these days that wasn’t around when he dominated.. physique is a huge part of the game and Hughes has gotten old and slower for every year that has gone by..

by BK on Mar 4, 2009 12:23 AM EST up reply actions
I say Hughes may not be done yet and to give him one more test after Serra. Let Hughes fight Kos and see what happens. I personally think Hughes could pull off a win against Kos but it would be an interesting fight no matter how it went.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Mar 4, 2009 8:37 AM EST up reply actions
How can you some of you say Hughes it done??? Let’s see how he does against other guys in the division first, not named GSP or Alves. He is a 9x World Champion, he at least deserves the benifit of the doubt.
by Derek on Mar 4, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions
I wouldn’t say either will be any more or less done after the fight than they are now. Neither will ever contend again and although the hype is gone for the relevence of this match in the division, it could still be very entertaining.
These two are extremely experienced and evenly matched with contrasting styles. When/if it goes to he ground, we will have a classic GnP vs BJJ matchup that most MMA afficionado’s will appreciate.

they both got big traps!!! dont really care for either guy but this fight does interest me… if i was a betting man id bet serra though… stand up id give the advantage to serra… ad not just cus he KOed gsp once upon a time… he just has more technique in his boxing… and id also give the advantage in the ground to serra… hughes has great wrestling but its no where as close to dominating as gsp’s to where it’ll take away all bjj from the fight if it was to end up on the ground.. so i think serra takes it… and hughes retires on the down side of things… thats if his big ego allows him to retire after a loss…

I like how all of a sudden these fighters are garbage. Yes I agree they would lose to the top two guy’s most likely especially Serra. But Hughes is the 3rd ranked guy in his division what’s so bad about that. Serra is a scrapy thick little bastard that has some power. Hughes should win but these guys hate each other and Serra should put up a good fight. it’s not a title fight but it should be a great battle. Come on Hughes might not be the best anymore but he’s still a good fighter.

I’m not trying to take anything away from him, I just can’t see him bullying people in the cage like he used to.
by BK on Mar 4, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions
I kinda of agree. I think the main reason he doesn’t look as good is because he never improved he stayed the same were GSP & Alves, Finch and every other up and coming fighter have got better each fight. Because he was on top so long instead of improving he became complacent with his ability as the other fighters progressed every fight he stayed the same, I remember him saying he use to never have a gameplan against an opponent were I garantee his opponent will have a gamplan for him. I’m not going to count him out yet but with the limited amount of fights he has fought and something about his attitude makes me think he will slowly drop down the ranks. If he doesn’t evolve with the other fighters I would give him another two years before he’s out of the picture?
by Beaver on Mar 4, 2009 1:32 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed, either of these guys would take out 98% of the UFC WW division. The only people that would have a chance would be GSP, Alves, and Fitch. I sure would have liked to see a Hughes vs Fitch a couple of years ago.
by RU486 on Mar 4, 2009 1:16 AM EST up reply actions
Both of these fighters aren’t garbage, It’s just that everyone around them has improved so much, It makes them both look like rookies. And I dunno where Hughes would be ranked 3rd, GSP,Alves,Fitch, and Kos are 4 that already come to mind. And they both talk trash and are disrespectful. I actually hope It’s a draw lol. And I have a feeling this might be a snooze fest lay n pray with serra trying to sweep, I can’t really pick a winner.

by Jee on Mar 4, 2009 9:15 AM EST up reply actions
None of them were lucky. He is a professional that did exactly what he meant to do. Now if he was trying to punch GSPs stomach and then accidentally hit is head then its a lucky punch.
And even after he got him with the first punch, the rest are not easy. He made it look that way. Do you know how many times a UFC fighter has someone in trouble and they still fail to finish him? So I think you’re wrong on both accounts.

I’ve been waiting for this fight for a long time. Matt Hughes has been underestimated for the past year or so. Granted, he’s lost three of his last four fights, but to whom? St. Pierre and Thiago Alves. GSP is just THAT good, and Thiago is that strong. Hughes is used to having the strength advantage. But Alves and GSP both have unfathomable physical prowess for welterweights. Don’t count Hughes out of this one yet.
As for Serra, He is overrated. The only reason he has been given any stock is because of the fight with GSP. But we saw how the first fight should have gone at UFC 83. He has losses to Shonie Carter, Din Thomas, and Karo Parisyan. Karo I can understand. He was a badass at the time, but Din Thomas? And the fight with BJ was nice.
At one point, Hughes lost only 1 fight in 20 (to BJ Penn), and another time won 18 in a row. When he faced GSP the first time, he went into the fight with a 41-4 record. That puts him in the top 3 of most dominant fighters of all time.
Age shouldn’t be a factor, Hughes and Serra are 36, and 34 respectively. I’m interested in how long it will take Hughes to shoot for the double and take Serra down. That is when the real fight begins. I don’t know many fighters that hate each other more than these two. When all is said and done, Hughes will announce his retirement and be inducted into the Hall of Fame at UFC 100.

A punch is a punch and he won the fight fairly, I don’t think anyone disputes that.
However, I think it’s pretty big anomaly, in 10 fights I think Serra wins ‘maybe’ 1 versus GSP.
That horse is long since dead and beaten however.
Both these guys days are past for sure. However, Matt Hughes was the most dominant WW champion ever, Matt Serra however has a spotty record of 9-5 record with a highlight of losses to Karo and BJ and a rather embarassing loss to Shoni Carter.
On Paper this is Matt Hughes fight.

by Jee on Mar 4, 2009 9:18 AM EST up reply actions
If both were in their prime, Hughes would take this one no problem, but their not and it seems to me Serra seems to act the younger fighter no matter their biological age, so its going to be a little more difficult. If Hughes would get off the farm and quit hunting for 8 to 10 weeks and train with some quality people, he could still pull it off. There’s always the chance of Hughes getting caught in this one but I think he takes this fight by taking Serra down and gnp a dec. win.

This fight is a great example of the UFC’s marketing ability. They’re going to promote a fight between two fighters (who are both past their prime) and make a fortune from it. In theory, this is no different from the Tito Ortiz/Ken Shamrock fights. Considering their deep pockets and moniker of top MMA organization, I’d like to think the UFC could feature better fights. Go ahead and disagree (because I know there’s lots of you who will), but MMA is growing fast and there’s plenty of talent to tap besides these veterans.

I can compare them both because both match ups include fighters that should have retired, and are way past their prime.
Your example does not make any sense … Kimbo (a street fighting bum) vs Rampage (currently, one of the best fighters on the planet). You are aware there are two Shamrock’s aren’t you, one called Ken, who is likely to fight Tank after his next fight.

Neither one of them could beat a top 20 fighter if they trained all year. I am tired of this fight I would rather sleep…another really dull publicity stunt by the money monger UFC. I am really getting tired of their BS.
Forget about Strikeforce and Affliction, I think UFC and WWF should have an HBO/PPV special
by Rusty Springs on Mar 4, 2009 7:20 AM EST reply actions
Serra is going to get a vicious beat down. Ever since the win over BJ Penn, Hughes stopped taking his training seriously, and it has shown. However, this time he is motivated, and I believe he will come into this fight in the best shape he has been in in a while. Serra is a middle of the pack lightweight who beat GSP with a lucky punch.
Look for a ground and pound demolition with the fight being stopped in the second round.

Serra’s wife had a baby girl a couple of weeks ago. Matt’s in full training mode now.

I believe it is Hughes last fight on his contract with the UFC.
He should retire win or lose but he should kick Serra ass before he leaves! Serra not getting much sleep if he just has a kid We all know how that goes!

Say what you want about Hughes. I’m not a big of him, but he’s still the most dominate WW Champ in UFC history… To date that is. There’s still fight left in him.

Hughes and Serra are showing why both of them got passed by prematurely. Hughes refused to retrain, and Serra concentrates on his business.
As for Serra, I never got why he wont go back down to 155.

Both these guys are over rated IMO. Hughes was only a 9 time world champion because of his competition. He would have never been champion if there were guys like gsp, kos, alves, and fitch around with the skill levels they have today. Hughes is just too slow and one dimensional and every guy I just mentioned is just as strong or stronger than him and is much more well rounded.
Serra’s claim to fame is his win over gsp, no way in hell would he have earned the shot like alves or fitch earned it. Imo Koscheck’s last fight is pretty much the same as gsp’s first fight with serra, the better strikers got caught by crappy strikers, bjj fighters who never had one tko win in there careers, shit happens.
I think serra’s stand up is a little better than hughes but I think almost the entire fight will be on the canvas with hughes laying on serra, with hughes winning a decision. If he wins I can see him announcing his retirement with most viewers sighing in relief. Serra will be pissed, hughes will gloat, both are asses what else is there to say?

Didn’t serra accuse gsp of being greasy? LOL he looks like a little grease ball in this pic. :P

I cant stand some of these posts, why are people hating on matt serra? he’s a guy whos always taken a fight no matter the opponent, and always puts on a show. i seriously think that serra is going to absoloute dominate this match. Serra has already a month and half training in this fight, as said in some of his recent interviews, and if you look on hughes website, he was blogs about his last hunting and fucking fishing trip, he doesn’t seem to be taken this fight as serious as it is. i know serra has gone 1-1 in 2 years, but that dam TUF season takes a long time to do and shit, and that injury obviously didnt help either..also, hughes himself has only had 3 fights in 2 years, going 1-2, with that 1 win a decision over chris lytle. if hughes does take serra down, he will not pass his gaurd, so i dont see him working any effective ground and pound from his gaurd.. I see serra standing up at first, picking hughes apart..hughes standup looks like it hasnt improved since he fought his first ufc match..it looked okay against bj penn in their second fight, but penn was gassed and had a seperated rib, and they wernt power shots, just little jabs..when serra is in shape and focused, especially the way he is now, he will not lose this fight, i predict an early tko, or i see serra submitting hughes, not from his back though. Serra, win or lose, will fight in the ufc again, he just signed a multi fight deal with them..he wont lose though!
Matt Serra, #1

I’m taking Serra in this one. I think he’s the better fighter at this point in their careers, and it will be fun to watch because Hughes is such a dck. Hughes was a great champ, but with the UFC fighters evolving at the speed that they have, Hughes is now exposed as a one dimensional fighter. Hell, that whole Milletich camp in Iowa has been left in the dust, they’re fossils now. All of their fighters are way behind ATT, AKA and Greg Jackson’s camp……If Hughes continues training there, he’s done.

Any fight were there is tension or hatred between two fighters is going to be a good fight regardless how high they are ranked. Prime example BJ Penn against GSP we all knew the outcome even the BJ fan’s knew deep down. I don’t think this fight will be as lopsided though? Hughes in the third by TKO.

Bad example they were both high rated but we knew it was going to be all GSP.
