WEC 39 MAIN CARD FIGHT COVERAGE:
WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown (20-4) vs. Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia (12-3)
Fight recap: Round 1: A huge right hand from the champion floored Garcia less than a minute into the fight. Brown pounced on him and reigned down some brutal ground and pound, opening up a nasty gash on Garcia's face. He couldn't lock in a rear naked choke when Garcia gave up his back, but after more ground and pound he was finally able to secure a deep arm choke that Garcia had no choice but to tap out to. Wow! Dominating performance from the champion.
Final result: WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown defeats Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia via submission (arm choke) at 1:57 of round one
-end-
Jose "Junior" Aldo (13-1) vs. Chris Mickle (26-11-1)
Fight recap: Round 1: Aldo was looking to make the highlight reel early on in this one, attempting flying knees, roundhouse kicks and numerous lightning quick combinations that had Mickle confused and off balance. "Mad Dog" was clearly outmatched from the get go, and Aldo easily finished him off.
Final result: Jose "Junior" Aldo defeats Chris Mickle via technical knockout (strikes) at 1:39 of round one
-end-
Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski (30-11) vs. Ricardo Lamas (5-0)
Fight recap: Round 1: Bartimus chased Lamas for the first minute of the round while working in a few hard leg kicks before being taken to the mat. Lamas stayed on top working ground in pound in Palaszewski's guard for a while unitl Bartimus managed to get back to his feet. Lamas maintained the clinch and worked relentlessly for another takedown before he finally got it with about a minute left in the round. He worked some nice ground and pound from there before Palaszewski got back to his feet where he flurried nicely to end the round. Close round, Lamas 10-9.
Round 2: Lamas initiated the clinch right away in round two. There was good action from the clinch, too, from both guys, Lamas with the dirty boxing and Bartimus with the knees. Lamas was able to take Palaszewski's back and eventually scored another takedown. From there he continued the ground and pound asault while fending off submission attempts from Palaszewski. Lamas landed several shots to end the round, but Bartimus stood his ground until the bell. Definitely Lamas' round though.
Round 3: Lamas came out looking strong to start the last round, but Bartimus had plenty of energy as well. They went toe to toe on their feet for a little bit with Palaszewski winning most of the exchanges with punches and kicks. After a while Lamas had enough though and picked Palaszewski up and slammed him to the mat. Bartimus tried to get back to his feet, but Lamas maintained control from the top position. He landed more ground and pound from there to basically close out the round and secure the win.
Final result: Ricardo Lamas defeats Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski via unanimous decision
-end-
"Razor" Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks (8-1)
Fight recap: Round 1: After a long feeling out process, Hicks lunged forward with a wild left hand and initiated a clinch. There wasn't much action from there either as the ref was forced to separate them. After taking a couple of leg kicks Hicks shot in for another takedown attempt. McCullough continued to show solid takedown defense though. He stayed on his feet and closed the round out working more leg kicks. Not much action at all during the first frame, but Hicks was a little more aggressive and probably took the round.
Round 2: The action was kicked up a notch right away in the second round. Hicks floored McCullough about 30 seconds into the round and looked to have the former champ in trouble with a deep guillotine choke. But somehow McCullough escaped. He recovered beautifully and turned the tides on Hicks with a slick reversal and some hard ground and pound. He got back to his feet and started dominating the exchanges from there as well. He used a versatile attack with knees, kicks and punches that had Hicks hurt on more than one occasion. Definitely McCullough's round.
Round 3: Not much action to start the round. Hicks looked almost as if he was just looking for that one big punch, while Razor Rob was stalking but being cautious as well. About half way through the round McCullough started working the kicks to the body and legs more frequently. Hicks kept his distance, mixing in single punches, but he never got into a grove in the round or the fight. I score the fight for Razor Rob.
Final result: "Razor" Rob McCullough defeats Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks via majority decision (29-29, 30-27, 29-28)

fight Announcement***
Joe stevenson vs. Mac Danzig! Not sure when this fight is taking place but I just read that they will fight
by john on Mar 1, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’ll go with Danzig in that fight. Unless Joe can drastically mix up his striking game, he’s like a fish out of water against guys with good stand up.

Hard to choose. After his last fight, am a joe daddy hater. But it’s either him or a smug vegan. I’d rather see Dufee-Al turk than this though. Better be on the undercard.

wow they really wanna put joe daddy away.. 4 L in a row damn it
trust me joe is not winning this

You mean 3 losses. If he does lose it will be to tough guys. it is a need to win for both fighters. it should be a good fight but danzig is better all around.

i mean 4 losses when he lose to danzig but your right its a must win for the both fighter

gotta be a loser leaves town match no??

that’s what mauro ranallo said when he announced it during xmma
by ian on Mar 1, 2009 11:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Crowls: when I read about this match up, it was actually labeled as a loser leaves town match up! I dont know if I believe that though! BOth fighters have won their seasons of TUF, which means that they are well recognized and have a fan base….UFC spent a lot building them into stars….cutting them would just allow another organization to pick them up and gain a fighter with some name recognition that the UFC has created!
I am not a fan of Joe Daddy, but I do not think that he should be cut! Yes he has 3 losses in a row, but he has only been taking fights against top fighters, kind of like wanderlei. Wandy has also lost a lot of fights recently but NO shame in that considering the tough guys that they get matched up against!
by john on Mar 2, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Danzig almsot certainly has several fights left on his TUF contract, and Joe Daddy probably does too. If Joe loses that would be 4 losses in his last five fights, while Danzig is looking at 3 straight losses. Still don’t think either one leaves after this one.
by PW on Mar 2, 2009 12:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i don’t think they should be cut, i’m just thinkin with the way guys are getting cut these days, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit. and if the fight sucks, they could both be gone.

thoughts as i watch this show:
Jens looks wicked uncomfortable on camera but his commentary is ok. The blow by blow announcer knows nothing and is a huuuge company man.
Razor Rob fight, great 2nd rd. rest of the fight was abysmal. I wish the Ref declared it a No Contest like he threatened to do.
There’s waaaayyy too many commercials tonight.
Chris Mickle is retarded: to quote “i have 22 victories by submission, but if someone wants to get in there and bang i’ll bang”
Please give me Aldo v Faber

more thoughts:
I like Demacio Page
Great performance by Ricardo Lamas especially on short notice
MTB’s entrance was really strange. He looks incredibly emotional. I don’t know if that’s good or bad but I’m guessing bad. Wonder if something happened with his family recently. He doesn’t look mentally there to me. Maybe it’s just the “I’ve arrived” feeling cuz he’s finally the champ after so much work.
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
WOW! absolute destruction. Nevermind his emotional state. That was tremendous. He may have just changed my mind about things. He might be on top for a while.

Huge performance from Brown. I’m thinking we’ll see Faber-Brown II now with Garcia-Aldo, possible? Both would be great fights.
I’m a big Jens fan but I missed Mir tonight. Lots of lulls in the action and almost no discussion of sub attempts or ground positioning. Say what you want about Mir but I feel like he does a terrific job describing the actions.

HAHA yeah i was thinking the same thing. Jens kept making funny ass faces when the camera was on him LOL

Anyone else think it’s strange that Spike/UFC is running counter programming against itself from 9 – 10? They’ve got UFC unleashed. Granted, when you read the headline, "Tim Sylvia and Wesley “Cabbage” Correira, you don’t exactly get excited, but if you were watching UFC unleashed episode after episode, you might just forget about the 9pm show on versus…
by YouveGotGold on Mar 1, 2009 8:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well, I guess we know just how cool Dana White is…He is so cool that he can couter-program his own company just for fun. Your my Chuck Norris, Dana.
by BrutalKnockout. on Mar 1, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
more MMA is good in any form. But more importantly, Spike really doesn’t have much non-UFC programming. They can show more of “worlds most dangerous videos” type stuff. Or they can show the “NEW” recycled old episodes of unsolved mysteries. Or they can show UFC Unleashed. I don’t think it was a well thought out plan.
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 9:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Why do they keep showing the same fights over and over again on unleashed?? why dont they start showing some of the undercard fights? anything except the crap they keep replaying!

I am always a fan of Urijah but he better come with a completely different game plan. I am not sure what he is going to do to beat Brown. He will likely try to use his wrestling which is the one advantage he might have. I think Brown is going to hold the strap for a long time!
by halljam2 on Mar 1, 2009 11:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hahahahaha…Brown is a beast. That was real easy.
WEC never disappoints, top notch show yet again. (except Razor Rob and Hicks, what the hell was that?)
Jens did a great job announcing.
And look out for Ricardo Lamas…very nice performance on a short notice. He gained a fan in me tonight.

well i picked my three winners right. cant believe people thought garcia would knock brown out. by watching all there old fights you would say brown would win by out wrestling him, but brown proved hes a pretty nasty striker with some damn fine power and we already knew he had slick submission skills. now that garcia is out of the way bring on faber and than aldo

The Razor vs. Hicks fight was way worse than I thought it was going to be but what was up with the ref “if you don’t engage I am going to call the fight a no contest”. Do they have that ability? Is it a Texas State commission thing? I have never hear that before. I know in Pride they would care and take 10% of the purse but that was quite extreme!
by halljam2 on Mar 1, 2009 11:21 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think the ref should have said that sooner that fight was a freaking snooze fest. I’ve seen both of those guys fight before and was ready for an exciting match but after that sorry excuse for a fight their asses should get sent back to the minor leagues.

I am a fan of Hicks, but I think he gassed himself in the 2nd when he held on to the arm-in guillotine (with only half-guard) way, way too long. That turned into one heck of a boring fight indeed.

I had everyone against me at my house b/c I’m a big Mike Brown fan. He’s rediculously strong for that weightclass. What a badass. I can’t wait to see Urijah vs Brown II.

Brown is no joke, unlike Garcia. That clown reminds me of Fernando Vargas – makes an ass out of himself on the way to the ring and can never win the big one.

Faber is still king and will own mike brown, no lucky punches this time. And mike brown saying " I’m the top feather weight" or whatever it was that he said relating himself to being good? Really homo you land a sorry punch on faber which u never even threw, faber ran into it. Long live the king of cali.

so was the punch on Garcia a lucky one too? this dude should just quit fighting and buy a lotto ticket if he’s that lucky.
by kitsunex on Mar 2, 2009 1:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I was at the WEC card in San Diego, and every time Brown would walk by in front of us, I would yell “lucky punch”, Brown turned quickly and I’m just staring at him. But the punch to Garcia was not lucky. Didn’t they showcase Garcia as a Pro Boxer??? I think he was too amped, hometown crowd pressure, etc.. and came out shaky and jittery. He choked, point blank. The slow motion replay showed Garcia’s jabs were sort of hesitant and was trying to stay away from Brown’s big right hand.
Faber will have an intelligent game plan, and take his belt back. He messed up Brown’s ribs with two knees last time.

Faber vs Brown II will be a much different fight from the first. Faber underestimated Brown and was getting cocky, and got jacked. But he still won. And he put Garcia out! He went down like he got shot.
But DAMN Brown hits hard! I have some new respect for Mike Brown. It will be fun to see how far he goes. I just hope he isn’t like Houston Alexander and fizzles away.
by dave on Mar 2, 2009 2:54 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
uhh comparing Mike Brown to Houston Alexander is retarded. Mike Brown has the complete package standup and jiu-jitsu. Hes been around for 25 fights he is no flash in the pan. Faber Brown 2 will be a war!

Brown is the real deal for sure. I picked him to win but i didn’t think it’d be so quick. Also i’m just about sick and tired of Razor Rob, some of his fights are just so boring, he won’t throw down sometimes for an entire round. Please put him on the under card until he proves worthy of a main card slot again. Lastly, i’d like to see Brown beat Faber in the rematch and then a war, Brown versus Aldo!
