Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira reportedly agrees to fight Randy Couture at UFC 101 in August

Former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion and ex-PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has agreed to face five-time UFC Champion and Hall of Famer Randy Couture in an epic match-up at UFC 101 in August, according to MMAWeekly.com.
The report does not provide a date for the event; however, it indicates that UFC 101 is tentatively scheduled to take place in Portland, Oregon.
"The Natural" was first to agree to the proposed face-off late last week. Now it appears that "Minotauro" is following his lead and finally giving MMA fans what they want.
This, of course, is the dream match-up that most fans expected to see on May 23 before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.
Couture recently indicated that he was interested in a fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic when the promotion storms the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, for UFC 99 on June 13. However, he apparently did not have enough time to prepare because he will be on a movie set alongside action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren in Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action flick "The Expendables."
This is not the first time that Couture has been offered a fight with "Big Nog." He balked at the opportunity while he was in a contract dispute with the promotion for most of 2008, saying the fight that he wanted most was one against WAMMA deity Fedor Emelianenko.
Now that he is coming off surgery and another movie role, UFC 101 could finally be the event that brings the former kings together.
Stay tuned for more on this developing story.

i agree. i dont think randy will be stupid enough to get subbed. hell work the takedowns and the clinch and eventually get a tko from gnp

if he wins they’ll probably try and set up a big rematch fight with brock and over hype it too death and make it seem like he deserves another shot

No crap, Nog is signing…nog is a warrior. Randy is the flaky one!
by john on Mar 1, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
Damn right John. Also Nog won’t get stopped or even look like he did last time. He’s training his boxing with Roach now and his BJJ will be on point with mini Nog, Jacare, Bitteti and Galvao at his camp. He will probly lose to the weight to regain some of his speed back. It’s just sad that this is a 3 round affair instead of 5.
by NameNotRequired on Mar 1, 2009 11:21 AM EST up reply actions
NNR.. It’s more about the physical conditioning he comes in with, Nog’s boxing has been pretty good for years now, the question is if his body can hold up for more wars.. this fight should’ve happened about 2 years ago!
by RoB on Mar 1, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions
nNR: Nog is training with roach? Really? should pay dividends for Nog who is a very under rated boxer.
I dont think that Nog is done at all. Dont want to take anything away from Mir who is GARBAGE, but that wasnt Nog who he just beat. He beat a staph infection Plagued Nog with a bad knee. after Mir gets killed by Brock I would like to see Nog give Mir the beating that he luckily escaped the first time they fought.
Randy doesnt have too many advantages in a match up against NOg.
Nog has the better stand up, and easily the best mma jitsu the heavyweight division has ever seen. People talk about how impressed they were that Randy defended all of Jacre’s sub attempts….But Randy out weight Jacre by a TON!!!! Randy will not feel comfortable fighting Nog on the ground. Only real advantage I can see for Randy is the Clinch….Other than that Randy will get out classed in all the other phases of the fight!

If Nog comes in the same shape he was in the first round against Herring, he has this fight!..

hmm. I seem to remember Nog taking a nap or something in that first round against herring… maybe he just decided to take a break or rest or something.

People who bring up the Jacare-Couture match should realize that if it went like that Nog will win the decision(going for subs counts on cards not defending/stalling). Trivia for those who may not know -Nog has beaten 4 of the 5 HWs to ever beat couture.

we all figured nog would except this fight whenever…
its getting ol’captin paycheck to sign~ thats the hard part..
lets see if randy ducks nog……….again~

C-mon stinky! Dont buy into the “Randy ducked Nog” crap. Randy was looking to fight Fedor. How was that ducking Nog? And if you read the story, it says “the natural agreed to fight last week” And now Nog is accepting the fight. Randy is going to smash Nog!
by JV on Mar 1, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions
yeah i know randy was looking to fight fedor..
that is exactly how he was trying to duck nog the fist time..
honestly? i was just taking a stabb at randy.
he will probably take the fight~ and he might win as well..
by stinky~fingers on Mar 1, 2009 1:41 PM EST up reply actions
this will be a very competitive fight..
i wouldnt say randy smashes nog(if nog comes prepared)..
i think it would be a close scored decision fought out
between two of mma’s vets!
by stinky~fingers on Mar 1, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions
NNR: Thanks for that very interesting fact that you posted.
Could you imagine if this fight had taken place in 2004? lol it wouldnt even fave been a discussion. Nog would have HANDLED Randy like a lil Biatch! He would have beaten the crap out of Randy standing and then probably finished him with like an anaconda or something hot like that!
I still like Nog’s chances against Randy. what I like even more is that after Nog’s performance against Mir, he will be an under dog against couture so I look forward to betting money on Big nog. Nog has won me a lot more money than what he has lost me on the Mir fight, so I gotta go with Nog. After his embarressing performance against Mir, he will have a lot to prove, making him extremely dangerous against Couture.
It really is a shame that Randy is a Biatch and waited till Nog looked like crap against Mir to accept this fight. This fight doesnt do the match up justice. 3 rounds? r u kidding? biatch move on Randy’s part since he knows that a 5 rounder would severely benefit Nogueira! How convienent Mr. “Captain Paycheck”>

Randy is going to tko Nog in the second. If not Randy can definatly avoid submissions and beat Nog via decision.

john i’ve told you before if you think randy was ducking nog to fight fedor, then you make no sense on this, randy wanted to fight the pride champion so there would be no mistaking who was the heavyweight champ. fighting nog would not have settled anything. he wanted a big payday and to fight the other champ. if nog wanted to fight randy he should have been the champ when zuffa bought pride. I know you don’t think nog is better than FEDOR. you’re not ducking someone by trying to fight the best. at that time and still to this day FEDOR is the best heavyweight out there.
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Mar 1, 2009 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

wanted to fight fedor is foolish..
that might have been the case at first~ but after
randy knew there would be no chance at getting fedor
he should have fought nog.. but he didnt!!
he let the ufc make a new belt.. that is ducking nog.

by belfort_fan on Mar 1, 2009 2:38 PM EST up reply actions
Thank Stinky. Like you said, Randy let the UFC make another belt because he had to duck NOg. Yes he ducked Nog! Why? Because had he fought Nog, he would have lost and there would be NO FEDOR Fight! Couture is a spoiled lil biatch…crying about fighting Fedor and following Fedor everywhere. Get off Fedor’s nuts Randy. Randy was NEVER Ranked Higher than nog, yet Couture feels entitled to fight Fedor as if that fight would crown a true best heavyweight on the planet. Such a bunch of BS. what has Randy ever done at HW? Won a decision against tim, a guy that top dogs like Nog and Fedor actually finish. Then Randy beats a Dea in thew headlights Gonzaga and thinks he is a heavyweight GOd. GTFO here!
What the hell makes randy think that he actually deserves Fedor. Randy hasnt beaten any top dogs really. He never beat Barnett…never faced Arlovski and they were in the UFC together for a long time. That fight should have been booked a long time ago.
F Captain Paycheck! I got no love for that dude. enjoy your BS movie rolls. one day you might actually win a Razzie for worst actor!
by john on Mar 1, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
john, i like them both, but randy was dominating tim, nog wasn’t. i sure hope you don’t think mir is better than FEDOR because he knocked nog out in the 2nd round and fedor couldn’t in 2 tries. I’m a nog fan but i would have rather seen the two champs fight rather than see couture fight nog. I AGREE WITH ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF YOUR POSTS BUT I THINK YOU LET YOUR HATE FOR RANDY GET YOU OUT OF YOUR HED A LITTLE ON THE POSTS ABOUT HIM.

AS FOR STINKY, I DON’T THINK IT WAS DUCKING NOG, I THINK IT WAS TIME FOR SOMEONE TO PUT DANA IN THE POSITION TO SIGN FEDOR. LETS BE HONEST AND I KNOW JOHN HAS TO AGREE WITH THIS, DANA MAKES NOG THE NO. 1 CONTENDER AND SAYS FEDOR IS REALLY NOT THAT GOOD AT THE SAME TIME. DANA DOESN’T WANT TO PAY THE MONEY FOR US TO SEE THE BEST MATCHUP HE WANTS US TO SETTLE FOR WHAT HE CAN SUPPOSEDLY AFFORD. I AGREE WITH RANDY BECAUSE ALL THE OTHER BELTS HAVE BEEN UNIFIED FROM PRIDE EXCEPT THE HEAVYWEIGHT, BECAUSE DANA IS A CHEAP BIATCH.
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Mar 1, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions
John and Stinky, excellent new nickname for the natural. I just find it amazing that people refuse to admit that Couture has faults(read his book). Follow the money and you will see that it explains all of his actions. Nog fights because he’s a warrior not for paychecks or legacies and it’s clearly documented that he has wanted to face couture since the 2000 KOK tourneys. I can’t keep going because i’ll get more pissed off and go on a rant. Also anyone wanna talk about Couture being fed title shot after title shot for the sole reason of being captain america as opposed to deserving it hence perpetuating the “natural” hype?
by NameNotRequired on Mar 1, 2009 3:17 PM EST up reply actions
Every fighter has their faults NNR. Ive never read Couture book but Ive seen the documentary on him. And he never had anything handed to him. It was no secret that the UFC had him swimming up river the whole time. “Legacy” and ofcourse “money” should be a part of every fighters life. Randy is one of the big sellers in PPV. Why would he not try to get more money? I could also go on and on but you get my point.
by JV on Mar 1, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions
NNR, i don’t know any fighters without faults, especially randy. If they were willing to do it for nothing i’d love to see it. when you look at the payouts and the money coming in you can see the fighters are really underpaid. the great Fedor knows this and won’t fight for dana for this reason. I think randy’s actions were more rebellion against the evil empire than ducking anyone. it was a way of showing his dissatisfaction with dana’s lackluster attempt to sign fedor. he was pissed that dana wasn’t willing to pay for the services of the best heavyweight alive,FEDOR.

by belfort_fan on Mar 1, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions
C’mon John, you seem a bit too biased with Nog and everything. Aren’t you giving Randy even a .000001% chance of winning this one? I understand that there are a lot of Randy haters here, but I believe if this was to happen in 2004, Randy would have a bigger chance due to the fact that he’s almost 5 years younger.
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Mar 1, 2009 5:52 PM EST up reply actions
of coarse I think Randy has a great chance. Randy will even be the favorite…But I hate him so I am biased! Nothing I really posted was a lie, but he is better than i give him credit for.
Yes I am worried!
I totally disagree about 2004! Randy’s striking was still crap back then. It started improving a couple years ago around the time of the Tim Sylvia fight. In 2004 Nog was AMAZING. He would have beat Randy up standing and subbed him on the ground!
In 2004, nog would have been 5 years younger as well….That was Nog’s prime.
if an In his prime randy fights in his prime NOg…..Nog wins that fight 8 out of 10 times. I am dead serious too!
by john on Mar 1, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions
I agree the only issue in this fight is Big Nog has not looked the same in his past couple of fights on the ground he still may have a hard time with randy, and don’t get me wrong I’m pulling for big nog he has been on of my fave fighters for a long time but put him up against brock lesnar he is just learned so much over the past little while and he is so explosively powerful and strong that he would more than likely put alot of hurt on Big Nog there is actually alot of hype about Tommy Morisson making a mma career debut, infact he has already defeated a couple mma fighters. I think he would be great against lesnar or gonzaga maybe even Carwin. I know Mir is next tfor the rematch fight with Lesnar coming soon I would love to see mir the victorer but once again as we seen in the first mir lesnar fight and keep in mind lesnar was in his first mma fight with nno experience on the ground or anything but the strenght and explosiveness for such a big man maybe to much for mir, I think Mir needs to work on his conditioning and his power.

I wish Randy had taken this fight when he was the champ though because one more title defense would have looked nice on the old record. This will be the easiest fight for Randy out of his last 5 fights. Chuck, Tim, Gabe, and Brock were all much more dangerous opponents than Nogueira, And I do know that Nog beat Tim, but stylistically Tim is more dangerous-or at least was at the time for Randy. I would say Mike Van Arsdale (sp) was about the same level of competition for Randy that Nog will be. I wonder if this will be a retirement fight for Randy? I think if he does well enough it could be, so he can go out with a devasting bloody tramatic career ending tko over a former champ. I still hope its not the headliner at 101.
by JRE on Mar 1, 2009 4:33 AM EST reply actions
a few yrs ago this would be a legit super fight and would headline ufc 100. I wish it was on that card but whatever. I expect this to be a Co-Main Event. A title fight will prob headline. Should be a good fight and I think Randy will find a way to take the decision but Nog will be much more of a test than Mike Van Arsdale JRE. Gimme a break. Don’t drink the cool aid just cuz of Nog’s last fight. He will be a real threat and this will be a phenomenally competetive fight. It won’t be a retirement fight tho b/c i’m pretty sure randy has one more fight on his contract after this one.
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 10:52 AM EST up reply actions
I’m looking at his last 3 fights, not just the Mir fight. He has looked horrible in all of his UFC fights, Herring dropped him, Sylvia dropped him twice and Mir dropped him atleast twice, and I believe Couture will also drop him. And dont discount Van Arsdale- he doesnt suck by any means.
by JRE on Mar 1, 2009 11:28 AM EST up reply actions
i didn’t say he sucks, but he’s not around the UFC anymore for a reason
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions
I agree with you 100% JRE, I have made this comment to John on numerous occasions, as far as John is concerned that was not the real Nog, it was a clone. The real one was taken away by aliens for study. He is back now so we should see a new and improved performance from him even though he is not getting any younger. John is in a minority group that believe Randy is and was ducking Nog, beating Fedor proves everything and if at his age, as he said he only has few fights left in him, of course you would want to fight the best in the world nd the guy who beat Nog. And in a sport where an injury could stop you competing for life, why shouldn’t he get the most amount of money he can.
John really has some serious hate for Randy, I have never seen him talk about a fighter with such venom. Randy will smash Nog when they fight and the excuse will be it was because Randy waited until Nog was past his prime to fight him, or it still isn’t the real Nog, the aliens have still got hold of the real one, and it’s the clone still making the real Nog look bad.
by Ade on Mar 1, 2009 3:48 PM EST up reply actions
that’s some funny shit. I’ll take randy in this one too, but i expect it to be very competetive. Randy will be faster and more explosive though and I expect him to set a high pace and wear nog down. I don’t see him beating on Nog and getting caught with a late submission like a handfull of Nog’s opponents.
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions
at age 40 Van Arsdale had 1 loss to his name. I would Love to see what NOg is doing when he is as old as Randy! I would bet good money that he is retired!

This is going to be an interesting match up indeed. I think people need to let go of the Mir v Nog fight because I see him coming out and winning this one decisively. Randy is on the way out and it is time to go. I see Nog beating Randy, then Randy fighting Cro Cop and Forrest Griffin to end his career :)

by ruan-fiy on Mar 1, 2009 7:16 AM EST up reply actions
Clearly … Just thinking in terms of time and the marketability of fights. Everyone wants the Cro Cop fight to happen before Randy finishes up and to be honest, I think Randy and Forrest would find it an honour to fight each other, especially if it is Randy’s last .. it would be a massive PPV and a nice sign off.
by DownUnder on Mar 1, 2009 9:37 AM EST up reply actions
it would be massive but i think they would put friendship 1st before revenue. i’d think there’s more marketable fighte for randy to have rather than fighting his pupil. i’d rather have randy have another shot at brock than see him fight forrest, it actually make no sense in randy(asuming he beats forrest) to take him out of title contention.

couture best place to be is on top ground and pound, then big nog is on his back, their strong points will collide, interesting,to see how randy can ground and poun nog since nog is one of the hardest grip on mma,and its also interesting how nog can submit randy since randy has one of the best submission defense.

I am yet to be impressed with Nog’s performance. (since coming to the UFC that is)
I was reading Nog’s bio one day and was shocked to find out that he is the same age as me. (will be 33) I thought for sure he was in his late 30’s early forties. The man has took quite a bit of damage over the years.

Nog via submission. I don’t Randy will be “stupid enough” to get caught, but Nog will be smart enough to catch him. Couture gas some submission losses in the past (the first-minute loss to Valentijn Overeem via guillotine). Nogueira hasn’t looked his best in the UFC, but he’s still a major threat at heavyweight. I just hope he doesn’t go into the Couture fight looking like a heavyweight Paulo Filho, he looked terrible against Mir.

If Nog vs Couture is the main event at UFC 101, does that push BJ vs KenFlo as a co-main event or does it send it to September?
Because we all know BJ can’t fight in September, he has to watch the new TV shows. That’s very important to him. So, October? But that’s Halloween month, and we know BJ can’t focus on fighting then. So… November?
NOTE : "The Expendables."… I hope it’s a comedy, because the cast is hilarious. Lundgren! Couture! I want to see that. Hopefully Schwarzenegger gets a cameo.

This fight is going to be awsome!! Yes they are getting old but they are just as skilled as they were two years ago, age only play’s a factor on endurance and strength and I can’t say they have lost that either. The reason they have both lost lately is not because of their age but the fighters they have fought our better and both these guy’s are reason’s why. Fact is the fighters have evolved from when they were champs and the fighters are getting better and in their division even bigger. UFC is the only organization that you can really judge how much a fighter has evolved. Barnett who was a old UFC champ has no stand up what so ever and relys soley on bring the guy’s down to the mat to GNP, now day’s his style will not do nearly as well as most fighters have evolved their take down defence. It’s going to be tough for any old fighter to come in the UFC and take on the best in the world ask Cro Cop.

Let’s face it, this is a young man’s game. Pitting a couple of guys past their prime against each other can still hold some entertainment value but there should be no plans to put the victor of the Nog/Couture matchup in the octogon against hungry, up-and-coming competitors.

I’m not a Mir fan in the least, but it’s insane how people aren’t giving him the credit he deserves. Staph infection or not, he absolutely outclassed, out-strategized and picked Nog apart with his stand-up.
Whether you consider it “lucky” on Mir’s part that Nog didn’t come in at 100% is fair, I suppose, but that doesn’t change the fact that Mir executed the perfect game plan against a legend.
That said, Mir is done when Lesnar gets a hold of him and unleashes the force of god. No shot that Mir stands with him, and this time around Brock knows what NOT to do… which is all it’s going to take for that behemoth of a man to absolutely pound Mir to submission.
