XMMA 7 'Inferno' results and quick recap

XMMA 7 'Inferno' went down last night in the CEPSUM Amphitheater in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. An event that once featured fights with both Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos took place without either of the former EliteXC stars in action, but that didn't stop the rest of the card from putting on a great show.

In the main event, War Machine (the artist formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver) filled in against the previously unbeaten Guillaume "Il Toro" de Lorenzi on very short notice for Baroni -- who is likely to instead compete on a Strikeforce event on Showtime sometime in May.

Despite coming in as a late replacement, the controversial veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series was able to leave Montreal with the seventh win of his career. He repeatedly tried to take the fight to the mat and his persistence paid off late in the first round when he was able to secure de Lorenzi's back on the ground and sink in a fight-ending rear naked choke.

The card also featured two championship bouts as well. Light heavyweight champion Martin Desilets and lightweight champion Kajan Johnson were both successful in defending their titles against Todd Gouwenberg and Steve Claveau, respectively.

Gouwenberg looked sharp at the beginning of his fight and appeared to be on his way to capturing the XMMA 205-pound strap before his confidence got the best of him and he ended up getting caught in a late first round triangle choke, which Desilets used as leverage to pound away at the challenger until he got the referee stoppage.

The win was the second in a row for "The Stress" and third straight under the XMMA banner.

Star-divide

In the 155-pound title fight, Johnson and the fan favorite Claveau battled for the second time in their careers. They had previously fought to a draw back at XMMA 4 last May. This time, however, the champion controlled most of the match by taking the action to the ground and using dominant positions.

Claveau survived the first round, but it wasn't long into the second before "Ragin" Kajan Johnson had his opponent tapping out to a fight-ending armbar.

Here are the complete results for XMMA 7: "Inferno:"

-War Machine defeats Guillaume De Lorenzi via submission (rear naked choke) in round one
-Martin Desilets defeats Todd Gouwenber via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
-Kajan Johnson defeats Steve Claveau via submission (armbar) in round two
-Thierry Quenneville defeats Douglas Evans via submission (triangle choke) in round two
-Daniel Grandmaison defeats Markhaile Wedderburn via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
-Tim Wadsworth defeats Johan Croes via submission (armbar) in round one

John Makdessi – wasn’t he that kickboxer training with St Pierre in the primetime show? Wonder if he’s any good?

Yep that’s him. KB 22 – 0
MMA 3 – 0

This last fight ended in controversy though. He apparently poked the guy and the ref didn’t stop the fight.

I heard that his finger was greased.

Hey, Maybe I could make a video with pop songs and still photographs mixed in and close ups on his finger. Then everyone would believe me. BJ Penn will post it on his website.

My lens came out. You try fighting when you can’t see. And no his kick did not hurt me. I went down without taking damage. He has good defense but I’m not making any excuses.

Do you fight? I want to see some of your videos.

I watched this event on PPV yeah it was $29.99 but i figured what the heck, LIVE MMA and I actually was very surprised how well the event came off on PPV. Mauro Ranallo was doing play by play and Patrick Cote on Color. Also the War Machine stomping of the canvas after the fight was awesome lol. good show.

by Markie on Feb 28, 2009 2:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

29.99 yikes

Nice work by War. He has had pretty good success outside of the UFC thus far. Two wins both in the first round.

by RyanHobbs on Feb 28, 2009 5:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

look at the competition tho, richie hightower coulda beat those guys haha

by JakeAnd on Feb 28, 2009 9:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was there in person. Very good show. War Machine took the fight on two weeks notice and actually weighed in 5 lbs heavy. Wasn’t expecting him to look so sharp in the ring but he did well. The stomping was actually to mimick Di Lorenzzi(his opponent) who stomped twice really hard and pointed across at War before the fight started. Kajan Johnson looks like he could be a force if he can get some higher calibre experience.

i always liked war machine, he does some crazy stuff but hes a good fighter imo.
