Josh Koscheck vs Chris Wilson at UFC 98 in May

No rest for the weary.
Josh Koscheck will indeed return to the Octagon sooner rather than later, accepting a bout to take on Chris Wilson in a welterweight tilt scheduled for UFC 98 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23.
This will mark the fourth fight in six months for the American Kickboxing Academy product.
Koscheck was recently upended when he walked into a Paulo Thiago uppercut at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" two weeks ago. The referee jumped in to stop the action in the first round after Koscheck hit the canvas, which several onlookers, including Koscheck, felt was a premature stoppage.
He will no doubt look to exact revenge on the super tricky fighter from Team Nogueira.
Wilson is also coming off a loss -- he dropped a split-decision to John Howard at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" just last month. It was the lone bright spot on a rather uneventful card, bringing home co "Fight of the Night" honors.
Wilson had a recent four-fight win streak snapped in early 2008 when he stepped up to take on top division contender -- and Koscheck training partner -- Jon Fitch on super short notice in a losing effort (unanimous decision).
He was invited back shortly thereafter and defeated Steve Bruno in a lopsided unanimous decision at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy." This will mark his fourth fight under the UFC banner.

Here’s to hoping for another KO for a fighter who doesn’t learn his lesson. I hope he stands with Chris.

as much as anyone hates kos u gotta respect how much of an athlete he is and how much he fights
by ufcaddict on Feb 28, 2009 7:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah i respect his drive for sure… i dont understand why more fighters arent like him… these guys that fight twice a year in my opinion are just flat out lazy

yeh i’d love to see a more popular fighter fight as much as kos… the likes of page, A.silva, W.silva etc…
i do think anderson silva will be very busy this year and next with all the top contenders at MW atm

This is NO EASY win for Kos. Wilson is legit. I like Kos for staying Busy, but that strategy is going to coast him a title shot. Jumping from one fight to the next, gets you paid, but doesnt help being awarded title shot. This will catch up with Ko’s body and he will be fatigued!

john, any word on Mamed Khalidov?? I’d love to see him in the UFC and see if he could get down to 185.

Crowls, regretfully I have to admit that I don’t even know who that is. give me some info on him if you have the time. I will keep an eye open for you though.

Good prospect(a poor man’s Mousasi IMO). He fought at ShoXC and beat up Older caveman brother. Not sure if he’s one of the contracts snatched up by Strikeforce but i can’t imagine why not. If not then i’d probly expect him to fight in M1 or maybe a british show.

Wilson may be legit and everythin’ but I think whichever wayyou putit, The Professor is definitelya step down in competition for Kos. Well, in a way, that’s how you could look at the Paulo Thiago fight[for lots of us don’t know who the heck he was before TKO’ing Kos], but Thiago validated his status as a UFC fighter. Hoping for another upset!

yea john, he fought jason guida on showtime back in like october. pulled some sweet looking stuff. Polish guy who looks like a smaller AA(body type anyway). He rolled into a kneebar from the feet, did some other crazy grappling stuff, threw spinning fists and kicks. Threw a roundhouse upkick from the ground that was awesome. I was def impressed and wanna see more of him. He looks like a guy that could def hold his own in the UFC.
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
also, he if you check his record, he has wins in a real variety of ways. Armbar, kneebar, tko, KO highkick, all sorts of stuff. Has 3 losses(1 KO, 2 Sub) but they were all in his first 5 fights i blv and he hasn’t lost since sept. ‘05. I looked into it a little bit, he’s fighting in some polish promotion and wants to continue to be able to do so. That in mind, I’d imagine he’ll sign with strikeforce to get non exclusivity so he can still fight back home. Disappointing.

thanks for the info guys. Sounds entertaining. I am definitely going to watch some footage on him. Thanks again!

No doubt—4 fights in 6 months is insane. Probably will need to get 2-3 more consecutive wins for a title shot.

Kos big weakness right now is he is relying too much on left jab-overhand right. he has fast hands and should learn more boxing. he has the same attack everytime and if he mixes it up more he might find himself scoring knockouts with left hooks or right uppercuts or maybe a good liverpunch instead of the same overhand right all the time. hes trying too hard to be a tough guy instead of a smart fighter. a good boxer with wrestling skills are scary fighters, kinda like the current champ right now.
by Egads on Mar 1, 2009 2:09 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The current champ really has just about every skill.
by naturalshadow on Mar 1, 2009 7:48 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Kos will never get another title shot. He’s not in the same league. His striking, while it was effective against lower compertition still isn’t up to snuff and he can’t seem to realize what he is. A wrestler that needs to take people down and work ‘em over. He will continue to fight mediocre fighters and win the majority of them, but we’ve heard the last of him as far as being a contender.

good post Ethan. I hate having to listen to Rogan’s Crap about what a great, Chuck Liddell-esque fighter Josh has become. Give me a break! That BS over hand right that he wings around like an idiot! I hope that in the future Kos bitches about taking the alves fight on short notice and campaigns for a rematch, so I can get to see my boy Alves DESTROY him again! I was SO DAMN happy that night! Happy Paulo tHiago drugged him as well!

You are on the button perfectly, the only fighter you didn’t mention and we need to see him in the ufc again against anderson silva and I strongly believe he can be the one to defeat silva especially after watching him fight at affliction so powerful and so explosive at the weight he is fighting at he is able to show his true fighting ability.

by JRE on Feb 28, 2009 11:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
furthermore these fighters are not as obsessed with fighting as you fans are, and i would go out on a limb and say they probably have lives outside of fighting.
by JRE on Feb 28, 2009 11:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the fact that koscheck is RICH and DOES NOT need to fight that often makes it better for him, he actually wants to be in there fighting.. and that was brendans point, so what AKA is the camp that doesn’t wanna fight the best and would rather take the easy road through everything but at least kos wants to fight every card he can, take in mind his contract pays what 60k each fight? thats over 200k this year alone just off pay not to mention bonuses and sponsors, the guys who fight once or twice a year are the ones who end up like ricco rodriguez and ken shamrock fighting til they are 50 not making shit for money but didnt do it in there prime so now they have to
by randy murders on Mar 1, 2009 12:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ko’s is doing it right, he’s not RICH that’s why he’s fighting he’s got a few yrs at his peak to make his $$. KO’s needs to change his fighting strategy is all, mix it up more with takedowns n GnP… he was definitely dominating the fight until he got caught.

Dude, I hated Koschek on TUF. And I hated him for the first couple of years of his career. But I find it really hard to hate this dude now. He is a warrior. Fights more than anyone in the UFC. He doesn’t give a fu@k. He deserves everyone’s respect. I am done with any Koscheck haters. Anyone that bitches about him doesn’t know shit.
by Boom Goes the Dynamite! on Feb 28, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed boom, i used 2 hate him but his drive has one me over. chuck used to fight nearly every 3 months. which is insane enough. rashad evans is losing my respect for this reason. he didn’t take the page fight because he needed more time, when they fought the same card. i guess he wants jardine to fight all his opponents first so he can learn a little bit about him. i think rampage learned in his fight against forrest that ring rust is a mother to shake off, and he wants to fight more often now.

Deep inside, He is still a dIK!!! So F that dude! I respect him for fighting a lot, but Its hard for me to respect a guy that doesnt even have enough respect for his own career to watch footage on his opponents.

Meh that stop against Paulo wasnt bad but frankly ref shouldve told Paulo take him out that way we wouldnt have any controversy. Josh was clearly hurt and dazed still but he has amazing recovery time which is the only reason i wont say it was a great call.

I like Wilson, but I think he is overmatched. Wilson’s striking is always on point, and if Koscheck stands with him Wilson could out point him. But Wilson’s weakness has been against wrestlers (Fitch and Howard) and I think Kos will fight the smart fight.
by DB on Feb 28, 2009 6:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I thought the fight with Thiago was a smart fight too. A jiu-jitsu fighter with lousy stand-up is the sort of fighter you keep standing up. Koscheck was winning that fight easily until he jumped into Thiago’s uppercut.
I’ll take Koscheck here by UD in a boring fight.

Hopefully Koscheck will watch tape on this guy prior to the fight. I really hope he doesnt plan on getting a title shot anytime soon by fighting guys who arent at the top of the division. They need to make the AKA guys fight each other or switch divisions.

Its good seeing a fighter fight so often, especially when there are guys like Penn, Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell and some other big names that fight at most three times a year. I’ve developed some respect for Koscheck because win or lose, it seems like he always wants back into the cage. Even if he does look like some sort of demented clown, his past few fights have been pretty good, except IMO, the Lytle fight, I didn’t like how Koscheck had pretty much spent the last two rounds trying to smear blood into Lytle’s eyes so they could stop the fight (that’s what I thought he was trying to do, not decisively win the fight).
by Belisarius on Feb 28, 2009 8:13 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
smear blood into his eyes? he was elbowing and punching the crap out of him for the whole fight.

bel, chuck used to defend the title on two or three months between fights and was fighting every three months before pulling his hammy. he fought tito in april rampage in july, jardine in sept, wandy in december before he hurt his hamstring before fighting evans the next march. that is why chuck has so many fans. that was 4 fights in a little over 8 months. get some facts to base opinions on. he was fighting number one contenders 3 months apart. you hardly see any champions now fighting top contenders at that pace. rampage went ten months between henderson and forrest. before you go bashing a fighter learn their history.
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Mar 1, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
he missed the march fight because of the hammy
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Mar 1, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
he did not fight tito in april he fought tito in december of 2006 at ufc 66 and then he did not fight again until ufc 71 which took place in may and then jardine in september and silva in december, so he was fighting about three times per year.
by matt on Mar 1, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i stand corrected onthe first two dates, but you figure it up and that is 4 (four) times in 364 days at the age of 36. sounds pretty good for a fighter fighting top competition in a year. rashad is acting like he only wants to fight every six months or something.wtf.
sorry matt but it was still 4, not three.
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Mar 1, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
speaking of rashad, are they going to let jardine test the waters on every fighter for him?
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Mar 1, 2009 6:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What is the deal with a punk like Kos getting some many fights? Then you have a 9x World Champion in Matt Hughes who gets maybe one a year. That’s jacked up.
by Derek on Feb 28, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
That’s because Hughes is nearing the end of his career and he doesn’t want to fight more than 1 or 2 times a year. Kos is young and very athletic and he asks to be in the cage as much as he possibly can. Give Kos the respect he deserves. He’s a bit of an ass but he really wants to put on a good show for the fans.
by Budgell on Feb 28, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
and because hughes is a dick…not that Kos isn’t, but he’s at least relevant now
by Crowls on Mar 1, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The problem is Matt is getting old Derek. KOS wants to be at the top sooner than later, were Matt will only fight top ranked guy’s. If Matt asked to fight the UFC would plug him in. Look at Rampage he picked a fight against Jardine because Jardine was the highest ranked guy avaible to fight and Evan`s was still recovering from the forrest fight. KOS last fight was a quick fight that he thought was called to early and the UFC must be giving him another fight to make up for the quick stoppage. He was rattled but the ref should of seen if he was capable of defending?
by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I see your point, however I do think though that the stoppage was justified, a little weak sure, but KOS was not defending himself.
by Derek on Mar 1, 2009 1:56 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, Koscheck was googly eyed. That should be stopped every time.
by Drip Down Baby on Mar 1, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
maybe hughes cant beat half the division anymore. and the bottom half of the division arent big enough names for the “legend” to fight and would be undercard fights on PPV or free on fight night cards.

As much as I’m starting to really like Koscheck, the guy fights way too often for his own good.
Good on him for wanting to fight as much as possible. But eventually he’s gonna have to realize the possibility that it’s costing him fights.
I really do have to say though, he’s been a lot more humble since beating Diego Sanchez. I don’t think he liked how he looked after that fight.

whats not working for him is not using his wrestling at all. he needs to mix up his attack alittle more and keep guys guessing.

Koscheck is DUMB. Imagine being one of the best wrestlers in MMA and choosing to stand and throw predictable overhand rights. MMA is about the combination of different disciplines, he delivered some of the most brutal ground and pound I’ve ever seen to Chris Lytle, but he’s too stupid to use this approach against other fighters. The decision of stand and trade with Thiago Alves was unbelievable considering Fitch’s ability to take him down and control him. Keep fighting on short notice Josh, I hope you keep picking bad game plans and losing.
by Oskarbravo on Mar 1, 2009 7:30 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Say what you want but Kos is going to Dismantle Chris in this fight. Chris is a good fighter but this is bad timing on his part. Kos is nasty, angry and will win this fight at all costs. He is not that dumb either, he handed Dago Sanchez his first loss and that was all game plan, he excicuted perfectly and made Dago look real bad. Boring or not that was the kind of plan it took to beat Dago at that point in time.

I lost a split decision to Howard.
I’ve moved back to Brazil permanently and represented Team Nogueira for the Howard fight. I maintain a good relationship with TQ but no longer represent the team.
The fight with Kos should be great, we both have to win.
