Former UFC lightweight Din Thomas signs three-fight deal with Affliction

Former UFC lightweight fighter Din Thomas (23-8), who once competed as a welterweight on season four of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), has signed a three-fight contract with Affliction MMA according to Five Ounces of Pain.

No opponent or debut date have been named at this time though Thomas is expected to enter the featherweight ranks.

"Dinyero" was a top contender in the stacked UFC 155-pound division prior to back-to-back losses to Kenny Florian (because he blew out his knee during the fight) and Josh Neer. Following that, Thomas announced his desire to compete at 145 pounds.

He never got the chance.

Thomas was given his walking papers by the UFC last May along with Travis Lutter, David Heath, Kalib Starnes, Joe Doerksen and John Halverson. Since then, he scored a submission win (triangle choke) over Dustin Pierkin at Headhunter Productions "The Patriot Act" earlier this month.

Affliction Entertainment Group Vice President, Tom Atencio, recently squashed rumors that pegged his promotion as being "done." Speculation has swirled that the upstart promotion was hemorraghing money after high-priced shows such as "Banned" and "Day of Reckoning" and was looking for a way out of the fight game.

Not so fast, says Mr. Atencio, there is more to come.

A new 3 fight deal with Affliction??? Leads to believe that their cross-promoting might continue for longer than a lot of us thought

good to hear

I knew that Affliction wasnt done!

A fight that will probably get booked for Affliction 3 is:
Tim Sylvia vs. Paul Buentello….that is, if Sylvia doesnt get too beat up by Mercer at the end of May. I alos expect Arlovski on this card. Andre has a contract that says, Affliction has to guarentee him 3 fights….he has only had 2, and the contract states that if they dont get him a fight in the agreed apon time frame, than they would have to pay Arlovski his whole purse (which is over a million) any way.

Sorry Andre, cant run off to boxing just yet…..1 more fight in mma!

I want to see Arlovski vs. Werdum 2!

If they have their own show they’ll lose money. If they cross-promote how do they make money?

by JV on Feb 27, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i think the next show does good, who doesn’t want to see fedor fight?especially if its against barnett.

by roy on Feb 27, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wonder the same thing?? It seems as though cross-promoting only delays the inevitable

by McArthur on Feb 27, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

good for him nice to see that he will continue to work

by Shadow side on Feb 27, 2009 12:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

who the hell is he gonna fight??

by Crowls on Feb 27, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dan Lauzon is an affiction LW

by McArthur on Feb 27, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dan would beat him. The Lauzons are one of the best MMA bros around. Right below the Diaz and Miller bros.

by Synyster on Feb 27, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus Din id fighting at featherweight, not lightweight.

by James S on Feb 27, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ok, so that’s one guy. They don’t have a division. He’s just gonna have to cross promote and fight strikeforce and Dream guys. Strange thing to sign with Affliction if that’s the case.

by Crowls on Feb 27, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

they could import some guys from DREAM if FEG alloued it they have non exclusive contracts

by Shadow side on Feb 27, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i know, my point is, why sign with affliction to fight guys from other promotions? why not just sign with one of those promotions?

by Crowls on Feb 28, 2009 10:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So he will be fighting again some time in 2011

Din Thomas has always been up and down but I still love to watch him fight. I hope he does well with Affliction

by Cogito_Ergo_Sum on Feb 27, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

same here. That’s a good signing.

by Fidel Cashflow on Feb 27, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Din Thomas never should have been released from the UFC. He has always been an exciting and talented guy to watch fight. I am pretty sure he was one of the best LW in the division until he lost to Kenny Florian and Josh Neer. I thought he should have been at least pardoned for the Florian loss, it was a fluke injury. Dana white makes some bullshit decisions sometimes.

by Ballam on Feb 27, 2009 1:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

way to go Affliction. You now have a fighter that might bring much needed fan support lol. After Fedor and Barnett fight what do they have left to offer? really they might have two shows a year and Din Thomas will take up a spot? I hope to see Lindland or Belfort fight Tito? don’t get me wrong I loved when Pride was around between the UFC and them there was alot of great fights but once UFC bought out Pride and most of the good fighters UFC shows have been way better and way more fights. It also got rid of the He said She said BS. with the amount of fights the UFC put’s on it’s more than enough for the average MMA fan. I watch as much as possible but I will only go out of my way for UFC cards. The last Affliction looked OK on paper but crap in reality and did nothing to gain support, most likely it has lost support?

by Puck Head on Feb 27, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

“most likely it has lost support”

How so?

by introvert on Feb 27, 2009 3:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

For the majority of MMA fan’s paying for one show a month is enough? hardcore fan’s will watch any MMA fight they can but there are not enough hardcore fan’s too support Affliction with the wages they are giving away. Having only two are three events a year the average MMA fan will lose interest, especially like Affliction’s last card that looked good on paper but because of two 1st round KO’s was not that exciting. Like most pro sports there is one elite league, why do you guy’s think their should be two? The only thing Affliction is doing now is stopping us from watching every possible top ranked fight. Some of you guy’s are blaming this on the UFC but if you actually see some of these fighters salaries affliction is paying!? UFC put’s the top ranked opponents against each other every event why the hate to the UFC for putting the best against the best. Affliction is controled by the fighters and their managers much like boxing and have you seen what has happened to boxing? In the UFC the peaple that pay the fighters wages(us fan’s) determine the fights and that’s why it’s the best MMA show in the world.

by Puck Head on Feb 27, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

there last card was great so what are you talking about?

its not affliction keeping the top guys away from the ufc its the ufc, they would not sign barnett and other fighters that they don’t like.

than you say that the ufc puts the best against the best every card? like jardine vs page and a silva vs leites? they put the fights together that make the most money for them not based on merit or rank.

most mma fans that i know don’t hate the ufc but all the ufc nutthuggers that i know hate affliciton.

by roy on Feb 27, 2009 5:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

nice one roy!

by brendan on Feb 27, 2009 7:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Second that roy. And Affliction’s last card was pretty damn good. Winner for the worst logic used in the past month….“because of two first round KO’s it was not that exciting”. I hate those boring fights that end with people getting ktfo on their feet.

by Diceman on Feb 27, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The fighters that make the most money for them are the fights the fans want to see.Page against Jardine maybe not but Page wanted too fight and the best guy at the time was Jardine? The only other guy proven is Evan’s and he was still recovering from the Griffen fight. I agree Puck that Fedor is making money of the below average IQ fan. What does a win really mean against the 6th best in the world when you are first? Only Trump can make a go but I think most MMA fans have more IQ than whaT AFFLICTION needs to see Fedor cashing in on his record and avoiding the best? It’s only because of you retards that actually think you know MMA when any retard can see he is only making money off your retard ass. barnett is a good friend of Fedor and all you retards can have fun watching the Affliction version of WWE.

by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 1:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

LOL!!!! yeah all ten thousand peaple were leaving the building wanting more!? Ya right that was brutal I must agree. Affliction is doomed. And I’m glad.

by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 2:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Roy are you for real?! Fedor’s managment is the only reason you can’t see him in the UFC and as long as there’s retars like you out there they will continue ducking the fights we want too see because of your retarded asses. Ok Hong Man is a great fighter you have a good point LOL… Affliction sucks and so does it’s fan’s they wreck it for all of the real MMA fans.

by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 2:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Roy the last card sucked I don’t know what you were watching? Every example that you have of the UFC fights will be ten times better than what Affliction PPV was. I know you love Fedor and want to defend his reasons for staying away from the UFC? It’s tuff when your favourite fighter is a pant isn’t it? at least your not a BJ penn fan.

The reason I’m glad is Fedor will not be able to duck the best once there are no more retarded fans willing to pay to watch him fight use to be’s.

by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 2:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor would get destroyed by Brock end of story. If you think otherwise you don’t know MMA.

Sounds like you will be upset if Affliction folds. I am glad that Affliction is still going on for as long as it can and was never in favour of the UFC having a stranglehold on the sport and the fighters. Affliction is good for MMA fans it gives fighters who are not willng to bend over and touch their toes for Dana an opportuniy to carry on fighting and the UFC has only gotten better and have tried a lot harder since Afflicion has been in business. There is really no need at all for them to pay the high wages they do, the fighters are really shooting themselves in the foot for expecting or demanding that much money. I would love to see how Arlovskis’ improved stand up would hold up against Kongo. If only we could get the odd bit of cross promoting from the UFC.

Hey Beaver how did you do at your table last night? I went all in with a ace two. king, king two was flopped. that guy with the purple sunglasses raised my raise so I said f it lets see what he has he called and layed his king and seven! I knew it he bluffs almost everytime but when I decide to call he’s not. The cockmuncher told me I had nice eye’s and gave me I wink!! next card was a two…..and then another two LOL!! Puck head is bringing his tower tonight. He has thousands nd thousands of MMA fights on it the best thing is you can type in a name like Din Thomas and find it will bring up every fight and interview of Din. I can’t remember watching this guy but we will see tonight. Your right even though you sound like an ass you drunk bastard Affliction is doomed.
