UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin not even close to reaching full potential ... yet

"I think I'm getting there. I don't think I've come close to reaching my potential. Athleticism can take you quite a ways, but I'm still learning a lot of techniques, working on my boxing, kickboxing and jiu jitsu. Even in wrestling, MMA wrestling is different from regular wrestling, so I'm working on that as well.... I'm at 6,000 feet where I train and we go five five-minute rounds, and I feel pretty good at the end of five fives. In fact, I feel like I get stronger in rounds two and three.... It's a lot of different things. Sparring, going live, those types of sessions are the hardest and those workouts resemble the fight the closest. There are also explosive drills that I do continuously for five minutes.... Usually I walk around at about 275 to 280, but about three months out I clean up my diet and eat healthy, and I tend to get down pretty lean. Usually by fight time I shouldn't have to cut weight."
-- Undefeated heavyweight behemoth Shane Carwin talks to MMA FanHouse about his training and preparation for Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96: "Jackson vs. Jardine" from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7. Carwin is actually still only fighting part time, working full-time as an engineer for the North Weld County Water District in Colorado when he is not in the gym. That's kind of scary, considering the way in which he has absolutely manhandled his opponents thus far throughout his career as a "part-time" fighter.

I’m pulling for Gabe. But I won’t be too upset if Shane wins. He seems like a stand-up guy. Gotta respect the fact that he probably has to put in for vacation time to go fight gonzaga!

If Gonzaga wins, should he be worthy enough to face Lesnar, assuming that Lesnar wins over Mir and that Fedor-Brock face-off doesn’t materialize?

I think he would still need one more win. I’m not impressed by wins over Josh Hendricks and Justin McCully. I could see him fighting Kongo in a number one contender match if they both win their next fights.

We will see if Carwin can take a shot. Gonzaga always absolutely railroads guys not on his level but if they push back- his mind kinda cracks. We will see if he learned anything in the Werdum fight.

i can’t believe the hype behind this guy.the dude is 34 and he has faced only cans.

Have to agree. I think Carwin could stay undefeated forever if he sticks to local and regional promotions. But he’s not on the same level as the top UFC HW’s. I still think he’s a cool dude. And for me he’s got that underdog thing going on. If he does win I see his popularity going through the roof. Working for the county on Friday and knocking out guys on national TV on Saturday. Holy crap will that boost the turnout for the next TUF tryouts!

No doubt. If wants to reach his full potential he better get after it pretty quick. Athletes don’t get better in their mid-30s without help from A-Rod’s cousin.

Does anyone have Carwin’s reach and Gabe’s reach? Because that is going to be a pretty big factor, and I’m sure Carwin has the reach advantage, but by how much. On the other hand, Gabe is not only the more versatile striker, but of course the more versatile MMA fighter. The only bad thing Gabe got doing for him in this fight is that if he is getting the worst of the standup, he can’t take Carwin down at will to submit him. If the fight is on the ground for a minute and Gabe is not rocked, he will submit Carwin.

PW – A-Rod’s cousin… very funny…
I don’t see Carwin getting out of the 2nd round but I still like both guys going into this fight.

PW — In a WEC thread you had mentioned something about Ricardo Lamas – who is now fighing Bart at WEC on Sunday. I think he’s from your area, what do you know about him?? other than his record of course…
by ViolentMike on Feb 26, 2009 12:08 PM EST up reply actions
All I did was make a lame joke about him getting some work after Renegade was cancelled (which actually starred Lorenzo Lamas). This kid is out of Chicago, and I’ve never heard of him or any of his opponents.

Hey Kazai, how old was Randy when he started MMA? Yes, he fights cans, but he absolutly killed all 10 of them with a mixture of KO’s and subs in the first. It’s not like they are split decisions. We have seen Gabe fold under the pressure and crumble when he gets hurt. Carwin trains with Jackson and that can’t hurt. Carwin by destruction.

Wonder if Carwin lands a big shot if he will know whether to rush in for the finish or not. If he rushes in and gets caught in Napao’s guard…

If he’s caught in Napao’s guard, possibly he’ll try and pound him out…

the dude is pretty big is he not bigger than lesnar?
by ruan-fiy on Feb 26, 2009 9:49 AM EST reply actions
actaully he’s shorter and more built with muscle. lesnar is taller maybe faster but strength i’d say it can be even if carwin trains full time
by ricky on Feb 26, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions
No, but close enough. I wonder what Lesnar walks around at? 295-300 maybe? I suppose Lesnar loses about 15lbs of fat in camp perhaps 20 and then goes from 280ish to 265 by taking a $h!t, I mean dehydrating.
Carwin has bigger hands! 5XL. But I reckon Lesnar is bigger, stronger and faster. The cage would break WWE style if those two slammed into it lol.

Not sure what to expect in this fight, but am looking forward to seeing it. We will learn a lot more about Carwin, that much is certain. I expect Carwin to have better conditioning than Gonzaga, but don’t think it will be a factor as I don’t see the fight lasting very long.

Full time worker, part time fighter, my kind of guy! Full time accountant, part time fighter here!

Does he still have a day job? He needs to switch to fighting full time if he wants to be a champ. But I still admire his and your work ethic.

me too…and thats saying a lot because I don’t even admire my own work ethic as I’m on here all day not gettin’ sh*t done!!! ;)

Carwin is a beast, I wouldn’t be surprised if he KO’d Gonzaga and went on to do the same to Lesnar, Mir, almost anyone in the UFC heavyweight division, he’s a beast.

I really like this guy as well. I WOULD be surprised, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him do it and emerge as one of the greats.

dude he fought cans, lets see him win before saying he can ko the champ
by liukangstoupee on Feb 26, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions
I never seen much of his fights, but if they stand and trade, gonzaga might damage carwins leg with those leg kicks, being said I dunno how that will affect carwins shot in the later rounds
Hard to say but ima pick gonzaga by sub 2nd

Shane is an good athlete, but he is really stiff in his boxing. I see Gonzaga picking Carwin apart. After Carwin loses, he will realize that he needs to quit his job and train full-time.

I say that if Carwin puts alot of pressure on Gonzaga… Gonzaga will fold. It happens every time. He cant handle the pressure at all.

I really like this match-up and I was hoping for it. Carwin is looking like a freaking monster, I don’t remember anyone with that dominating career start. GG is definately true top-10 heavy and ultimate test for Carwin. He hasn’t face anyone good yet.
Can GG take his punch? Can Shane avoid the submissions? Damn I’m pumped for this fight!
If SC beats GG he’ll be huge step up to the title shot

if your feeling “good” after 5 rounds, u aint training right! simple!
hard to pick a winner again and i just blew like 100 big 1s on soccer matches so im a lil gun shy these days in gambling haha if gonzaga can exchange well with carwin and stay away from the haymakers he could take it to a decision.
by Randy for Couture on Feb 26, 2009 7:03 PM EST reply actions
Shouldn’t Carwin be fighting Heath Herring and Cain Velasquez be fighting Gonzaga? It seems to me Cain is way further ahead of Carwin in every aspect of the sport. I may be wrong but it feels like Dana is building up his favorites again.
