With the performance he had on Saturday, I think Diego needs to do a bit more homework before he can give BJ a run for his money. I wasn’t overly impressed with how he looked. Don’t get me wrong, Stevenson is a good opponent, but I thought Diego would have had his way with him. Maybe a few more fights with guys like Sherk or Florian (if he loses to BJ – which I don’t think he will) and we’ll see.

I agree, feed him to Sherk. That would be a good and exciting fight, and it would throw him into the top end of the division right away.

I’ve haven’t seen Ozzy string together coherent sentences like that since the 80’s. Glad he’s doing well.

There is no doubt in anyones mind that at this point in time Sherk would anihilate him.

Then your crazy, So tell me then how do you see Diego beating Sherk? Decision? Sherk has the best cardio known in the UFC. KO? Diego couldn’t even KO Joe. Submission? Sherk has never been submitted and on the ground Diego would be lost forever. The UFC doesn’t want to lose a star like Diego at the hands of Sherk so early.
by Cogito_Ergo_Sum on Feb 25, 2009 9:59 AM EST up reply actions
Its a 3 round fight….I dont think that Diego cant beat Sherk…I actually like Diego’s chances. Diego would easily hold the stand up advantage in that match up…I mean seriously, what the hell is sherk going to do with his stubby t-rex arms?
on the ground, Diego is extremely technical Jits. Diego probably has better jits than anyone Shewrk has ever faced, including Florian. NOt so sure that Sherk would even want to take that fight to the ground.
Ideally, I think diego needs another tune up fight before facing Sherk. I feel this way because before he fights sherk, I would like to see Diego get used to the weight cut. He handled his 1st weight cut well, better than most….so after another fight, I think he will be comfortable with the weight and be ready to give Sherk Hell! Diego’s cardio is nothing to sneeze at either. Sherk wont have much of advantage in that department, especially in a 3 round fight!
by john on Feb 25, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions
I think so too…Diego needs another fight at LW before Sherk but who makes sense???? Diego/Tibeau would be good…
by McArthur on Feb 25, 2009 10:09 AM EST up reply actions
I feel that Sherk showed some very improved stand up against Penn even tho he got killed. I also think that there are few people who could go to the ground with Sherk and end up on top. I still am not convinced that Diego could take on Sherk but I would love to still see the fight and take a bet against you John or Ro. I’d say give Diego a fight against Clay or Tyson then let him challenge Sherk. Also agree that I was impressed with Diego’s drop to LW he didn’t seem to be affected to much by the cut.
by Cogito_Ergo_Sum on Feb 25, 2009 10:15 AM EST up reply actions
Sherks stand up is highly improved….But so is Diego’s. I dont think Sherk is a better striker than stevenson….I would say they are on the same level in the striking department, and we saw Diego handle Joe easily in the stand up.
THe striking aspect of the Diego vs. JOe fight reminded me a lot like the striking exchanges between Penn and Sherk.
Penn and Diego were landing shots at will, while Sherk and Joe could never really find their range!
It would be crazy to say that Sherk would have a striking advantage over Diego! I am also not sure if sherk would even want to go to the ground against Diego. Diego’s jits is probably more technical than most fighters that Sherk has faced. I also think Sherk is going to continue to try and show improved stand up because he is sick of the bad rep he got from being a dry humper. We are going to see Sherk stand and trade much more in the future than we have seen out of him in the past and thats going to cost him against Diego.
Diego has a proven chin, and I dont see many lW’s being able to Rock/Finish Diego with strikes!
by john on Feb 25, 2009 10:36 AM EST up reply actions
Sherk would be completely dominated in the stand-up game against Diego. There should be a significant reach advantage on Diego’s be-half.
Diego will sprawl and brawl little sherk.
Diego will be a much large opponent which does matter in the lighter divisions. Diego’s chances are far more better thans Sherks at 155.
by ndnman on Feb 25, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions
I must be under estimating Diego on the ground greatly. Maybe I don’t remember his fights to clearly but nothing made me think he was skilled enough to take a wrestler like Sherk to the ground. Either way I agree that the stand up should go to Diego but I don’t think Diego can finish the fight in any way. The only way Diego wins in my mind would have to be by decision. I still however believe that Sherk would come out on top. I didn’t realize how many people disagreed so that makes the fight a lot more interesting than it originally appeared.
by Cogito_Ergo_Sum on Feb 25, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions
Sherk can’t control Diego like you think. Diego will stand up and avoid takedowns. he will win the standup. I pick Diego over Sherk and BJ
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Feb 25, 2009 12:43 PM EST up reply actions
We may disagree on a few fighters John, but I always agree with everything you say about Diego, I have been a long time supporter of his. I don’t even bother to comment half the time because you always say everything I would and a bit more. Your analysis of Diego and Sherk is exactly the way I see it. I know he did’t knock out Joe, but I don’t think there are that many fighters who have.
by Ade on Feb 25, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
They should just give Deigo Guida before sherk or penn, but I believe a win over edgar puts sherk in the #1 contender status after Ken Flo so mabye Diego and Sherk wont fight this year??
by N-Cryptic on Feb 25, 2009 1:41 PM EST up reply actions
THank you ade! I try man. Sometimes my biased towards certain fighters might cloud my judgment. I like Diego, but he isnt one of my favorites that I would battle people to the death about…which makes me more accurate when I try to analyze his fight.
Diego’s Jits is very under rated. I think its as good as anyone’s at 155 with the exception of Penn who has flexability advantage. Diego is so technical which would make him virtually impossible for Sherk to control. If Sherk gets him down, diego is very good at sweepes (easier said than done against Sherk… I know)…. But I like Diego a lot on this match up!

“Diego probably has better jitz than anyone Sherk has faced.”
Are F*cking kidding me!?
Better than BJ Penn?? Better than GSP?? Better than Kenny Florian?? Better than Nick Diaz?? Better than Hermes Franca??

yeah i would like diego as a fighter if i just seen him from bell to bell. any time he speaks or i see him walking to the ring foaming at the mouth it just makes me hope that he wakes up face down on the canvas. good fighter but grade A goofball
by sac165 on Feb 25, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions
I agree give him Sherk, it’s hard to tell how good are bad he is by one fight at 155, some fighters match up well against certain styles and I think stevenson matched up well against Diego but the only way to fignd out is put him against another top 155er and sherk is probally #3 right now at 155?
by Puck Head on Feb 25, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions
i want to see see him against florian before he fights bj… it’s a very interesting match up… i think florian has improved more since the ultimate fighter than diego… i think it’ll be a close match up maybe sanchez has a slight advantage
by ufcaddict on Feb 25, 2009 9:25 AM EST up reply actions
If Florian was hungry to fight (and get paid) like Kos, he would be asking for this fight, though it might be too soon before 99, or 100, or whenever that fight takes place.

How badly does this guy want to give Diego a handjob while he is interviewing him? Jesus, he fought well but get off his nuts.
by Boom Goes the Dynamite! on Feb 25, 2009 9:30 AM EST reply actions
Smart for Diego to pace and see how 3 rounds felt. If anything, this guy knows how to be in conditioning and he is wise to test the waters. His standup game should be a lot sharper over the next year.
I think Sherk will have problems with Diegos reach. Florian will be a big test for Diego with Florians evolved talent. Florian might be the champ for all we know.
One thing is for sure, Diego belongs in this weight class and is an asset. I predict next time around he’ll be more dynamic.

I honestly feel as though GSP let a big mean cat out of the bag when he spilled the beans on his game plan v BJ…grapple and hold his shoulders till they tire to lessen BJ’s punching power…easier said than done but if anyone can have success with that for a rnd or 2 they have a decent chance no??? Easier said than done is an understatement but I think a lot of fighters might employ those tactics
by McArthur on Feb 25, 2009 10:07 AM EST reply actions
Yeah, he pretty much spelled it out. BJ, knows this, which is why he should start training now, for whoever his next opponent may be.
by GodDamnMike on Feb 25, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t think any lightweight can execute like GSP did…It just won’t happen. Penn will run through everyone at 155, no doubt.

Best jits??? what about BJ man, he faced sherk!!!!!!!
I thought diego looked good on sat, i was there and he was pretty elusive at times, looked very quick both on the feet and with his hands. The cut didnt seem to affect him at all.
I think he is already close to the top, 1 or 2 more fights then maybe a title fight if he keeps winning!!
Cant wait for the next uk event, im so pumped after saturday!!!!!

It affected him a little physically I guess. Look at his face, so gaunt.

The big “T” on the screen stands for TOOL. I think the did fine in the fight against Stephenson, but Sherk, Florian and BJ will beat him.
by blackBEERd on Feb 25, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions
I know all you guys are going to question this, but Guida is on the up and up. Diego and Guida’s energies combined could light up the arena. I think it would be exciting, good wrestling, striking, and both very compotent 55’ers.
by GodDamnMike on Feb 25, 2009 11:28 AM EST reply actions
I agree. I think Diego can beat Sherk, but I’d feel better if he took another fight first, and Guida would be the perfect opponent. I think Diego’s destiny is to be champ at 155, but he needs to take the right path. Guida, then Sherk, and then either Florian or BJ depending on who has the belt. Diego is a 155er for the next 3-4 years.

Beautiful! good interview he’s a great speech, and definetly one of the strongest characters in the UFC!

i really hope you are talking about GSP.. because Sanchito is out of his freakin mind and needs to be looked at by a therapist… and he would get owned by Florian of Penn… period!
by sigepsal on Feb 25, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions
No he wouldn’t he might lose but he would not get owned, Kflo has improved from the first time they fought but he still lost the fight. penn is a better all around fighter but in a five round fight if Diego makes Penn work, the advantage will slowly go to Diego if Diego let’s this fight become a boxing match he will lose. I think a fight against sherk will be a better measuring stick for all of us though.
by Puck Head on Feb 25, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions
no, im talking about Sanchito.. being crazy and all that is his image and that’s what makes him so entertaining, you have to understand that this is a business, and as someone posted he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll meet.. crazy and outspoken is a good thing that! the mic and the camera are his best friends..
by RoB on Feb 25, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions
BJ dismantled stevenson and Sherk – and a dirty sanchez coming off a decision victory over stevenson thinks he can even think about BJ?
Go for it
by jerrolds on Feb 25, 2009 12:04 PM EST reply actions
Sherk could not get BJ to the ground and had to stand up fight BJ so he had no chance, not saying Diego would win but he would challenge BJ more than both Sherk and Stevenson did. Don’t forget this is Diego’s first fight at 155 and he he looked really good at times one more fight under his belt assuming he win’s he should get his shot wether it’s BJ or Kflo.
by Puck Head on Feb 25, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions
Yea it’s really not even a question. Florian and diego have a chance against BJ but the odds are greatly against them. BJ is by far the best at this weight right now and the GSP fight really doesn’t say anything about BJ at 155.

Here is the real deal on Diego. He looked like a pretty dynamic striker, but you guys are not realizing why Daddy had a smile on his face the whole time. All Diego’s strikes looked great, but he never hurt Daddy ONCE. He had a couple strikes that hit right on the money and Daddy was never even stunned.
When Daddy fought Florian and Penn on the other hand, Daddy was lost the whole fight because he was getting hit so hard. That is the difference between a guy like Diego and a guy like Penn. Hence, why Diego would get his azz whupt by Penn. All those combinations and kicks looked great, but one jab by Penn and he is going to take a nap. And, he will NEVER be able to knock out a guy like Penn or Florian.
So ya, Diego keep calling those guys out, because they know why Daddy was smiling, and you will know soon too.

you rule great point makes me want to watch those fight with ken flow and bj whooping on joe cause diego couldnt do shit to him…..
by AK47 on Feb 25, 2009 2:31 PM EST up reply actions
Awesome comment, I agree. It really amazes me when other fighters like Hughes, Sherk, and Stevenson say that Penn hits sooo hard. It certainly doesn’t look like he does. Penn’s the man…he’ll be the king at 155 for as long as he wants to be.
by ja434650 on Feb 25, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions
Bj should wear tape all the way up his legs if he ever fights GSP again, so he can actually fight.
by ja434650 on Feb 25, 2009 3:25 PM EST reply actions
No way diego out strikes bj and I really doubt he could take him down with all the trouble gsp was having. Diego is going to try and trade with bj and most likely will lose, just like florian. I think penn will come in hungry after his loss to gsp and I will be shocked if florian beats him. Looking at his fight with GSP is a big mistake, 55’ers are soon to figure this out.
by nathan on Feb 25, 2009 3:45 PM EST reply actions
bj vs gsp 3 won’t happen. Too much to loose. BJ could prove he can beat GSP and make the second fight look like GSP did cheat, intentional or not…….or GSP would destroy BJ again and BJ would ride off into the sunset and never fight again.
UFC want’s BJ fighting. Just not fighting fights that everyone including Dana (who said himself), knew BJ was going to loose. I think Dana let it happen as a reality check (and a cash cow).
BJ is a LW fighter, not a WW. I don’t see anyone in the lightweight division that BJ couldn’t beat 10 out of 10 times.
As far as entertainment goes, I want to see Florian and BJ. But Sanchez is not ready for this fight.
by tallimeca on Feb 25, 2009 5:06 PM EST reply actions
KFlo should try and get a fight with another contender BJ is still recovering from the beating he took and won’t be ready tell July or august. Kflo hasn’t fought since November and needs a fight to stay at the top of his game.
by Beaver on Feb 26, 2009 12:48 AM EST reply actions
Diego is not ready for the belt yet, needs to prove a lot more, hope he doesn’t think he’s a world class striker now and go and get KO..like Koscheck did. He did not strong to me @ 155 maybe it’s the weight cut. But the kid has heart and thinks he’s the best and that’s what i like about him “He’s Believes”
