BJ Penn to fight Kenny Florian in 'late July or early August;' UFC 99 not an option

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

" ... it [UFC 99 on June 13 is] too close to BJ’s last fight. He wants to spend time with his baby.... We are still negotiating the fight. No date [is] scheduled, but we are thinking late July or early August."

Lightweight champion BJ Penn will more than likely not headline UFC 99 against number one contender Kenny Florian at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. "The Prodigy" is angling for a later date, which Florian is willing to agree to even though he would rather fight sooner. Penn would like more time to spend with his newborn child, recover fully from the loss to Georges St. Pierre and have time to put in a solid training camp for Florian. If the fight does not happen until August Florian will have been on about a nine-month hiatus from competition.

Yea its pathetic.

YOu guys are Brutal! The man just had his 1st born child….dont you think he should be allowed to spend some time with his daughter? Tough Crowd!

I have been reading up on this subject, and this decision is driven by Penn wanting to get to know his newborn baby girl!
The sad part, is Kenny said he is getting really low on money and was budgeting himself as if he were going to fight at UFC 99. Kenny is a top fighter who makes money off other mma related ventures like Commentating and the espn show. He earned $80,000 for his win over Stevenson…..He shouldnt be Broke! Dude needs a financial advisor!

by john on Feb 24, 2009 11:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would be a little more brutal if I were pres of the UFC. My policy would be if you’re healthy, you’re fighting. Having said that, I have a little girl and it breaks my heart to be away from her. However, I think you can train for a fight and still spend a lot of quality time with your baby. It’s better than military service where you spend weeks and months TDY with little to no contact. I just hate to see holding patterns for these guys that want and deserve title shots.

damn kenny must be getting annoyed at this…. he’s been on the sideline for a long time …. i’m not too sure how he is running out of money… how expensive is his camp

by ufcaddict on Feb 24, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

brutal?

how many fathers do you know who took off 5 months after having their first child?

training is a day job just like any other. there’s plenty of time to spend time with your family after work and that’s how millions of people do it every day.

by fourx on Feb 24, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m sure ESPN pays Florian alright money, just not the type of money fighting will get him. Other fighters of less caliber, go 7, 8, 9 months without fighting, without a commentating position for ESPN and somehow manage. But yeah, 9 months. That sucks.

“florian martial arts center” must be an expensive place to run…

Sigh…BJ will lose this fight as well. Doesn’t surprise me one bit that he wanted to wait, even if he had no baby at all.

ya cuz, the 20 weeks from UFC 94 to 99 is not enough…

by Anthony on Feb 24, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

John, the case is not really BJ wanting to spend time with his daughter. It would be understandable with the first child and all. But the fact is (unless gestation periods are different in Hawaii) he knew when this child was due and still saw fit to hold a training camp for the challenge to GSP. If he would have defended his title, that fight versus Florian could have happened and then had his time off. We saw in “Primetime” that he already had his daughter. I would think he would want that time at the youngest point of her infancy.

by The Answer on Feb 24, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

UFCaddict and Brendan, you guys are missing the point. He shouldn’t have to rely on that supplemental income. He is a fighter first and instructor second. So when does he get to take time off and just be with his family? He’s not a spoiled rich kid who can afford to do that like BJ. Is that BJ’s fault? No. But when you are the Champ and have the No. 1 contender waiting for a title shot for over a year, you have got to step up and give Ken-Flo his opportunity he deserves for the belt and to get a pay check.

by Open24hrz on Feb 24, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why are you aiming this comment at me??? i want the fight to happen sooner and although he shouldnt have to rely on supplemental income he should not be running out of money like john said he was

by ufcaddict on Feb 24, 2009 6:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is solely BJ being his whinny self. It’s not even like he trains like other fighters in solitude or seriously for that matter. This is pathetic on so many level from a guy who couldn’t back up a single thing he said in his last fight.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 24, 2009 6:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I want this fight soon as well. I’m disputing Florian deserves his shot ASAP but $80,000 to beat Stevenson. He shouldn’t be broke. I don’t make that all year and I consider myself to be in great financial shape. I don’t want for $hit. He should learn to manage his dough.

I can’t really get behind the excuse of wanting to spend time with his daughter either. It would make a lot more sense if he trained at remote locations, but when he spends all his time in Hilo training shouldn’t prevent him from anything. It sounds to me like he just wants time off. While that’s understandable, he’s the LW champ and should be obligated to defend it with some regularity.

by GregC on Feb 25, 2009 4:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously you guys dont know what its like to be a father.
Can you really blame him? He wants to spend time with his kid. Both GSP and Penn promoted the hell out of the fight. Let the guy raise his baby.

by The5thBeatle on Feb 24, 2009 2:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No one says he can’t spend time with his kid. If he wants to take some time off, he should give up his belt and let Florian fight someone for the title.

by RealDrew on Feb 24, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The5thBeatle, A lot of us do know what its like to be a father…fact of the matter is that I work 10 hr days to be able to afford to live my life and support my growing family…no offence intended to you as I’m sure you speak from experience but BJ needs to make sacrafices. Either fight for a living and live up to the promises HE made to his fans OR raise his child. BJ has NOT earned the right to treat people the way he does. Its immature and selfish. I miss a lot of things in my sons life due to working but that is life. I made a commitment to my family and my work and I honour both. BJ does not

by McArthur on Feb 24, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

McArthur, do you really “work” 10 hrs a day? :) I agree he does need to defend, but he will in the same time frame as GSP will, maybe 1 UFC later than him. No big deal to me. I also read that BJ is the only fighter who gets PPV points to fight ever fight over seas and the last time it only sold 225,000 PPV’s. UFC 99 in Germany will not do huge numbers due to the delay. Why wouldn’t he want to fight 1-2 months later and make 3 times as much?

by BNF on Feb 24, 2009 3:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe not 10hrs a day (who cares though I’m on salary and how do you know anyways? ;) ) I would wait for more money too if I were him. I disagree with the posts that claim he can’t fight cause he has a new born. He trains in Hilo during the day and sleeps in his own bed at night with his girl and baby…fighting is his job so I just can’t see why training is an issue…of course sacrafices must be made but thats life and his life is one that any of us would kill for. I feel as though BJ has not only taken his natural ability for granted but the opportunity to make millions doing it for the millions of fans he has managed to maintain. Thats why I think he’s selfish.

by McArthur on Feb 24, 2009 3:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Its really not that big of a deal. He only wants like an extra month off!

by john on Feb 24, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

thats true John…BNF, I responded but I’m stuck in mod

by McArthur on Feb 24, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

McAurthur: A lot of us know what its like to be a father, but NON of us know exactly the sacrifices, work, and time that goes into training for a professional fight. On top of that, bJ invested a lot of time into promoting the event.

If he were to say, I will be back on NYE….I would be pissed!

The guy only wants a extra month off! I also think it has to do with not wanting to fight in Germany because the ppv would be sold via tape delay, and when that happens….The ppv sales are low, and that hurts BJ because he gets a percentage of the ppv revenue. I know some of you will say he is rich, but MOney is MOney!

by john on Feb 24, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I was refering to the fact that you post quite a bit and you probably do it at work like most of us do.

BNF…haha…YES!!!

by McArthur on Feb 24, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

John, I don’t disagree. I don’t disagree with your points or the fact that BJ wants a month more off. Big Deal!!! But for the money BJ makes, I personally would sure as hell make the sacrafices, and put the time in that most fighters do in order to earn it and give the fans what they want, when they want it…I realize I am not going to convince you guys otherwise but I stand by my points and hope that you see my side whether you agree or not

by McArthur on Feb 24, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I work 60-70 hrs a week and I’m on call 24/7. In 08’ I had 11 days off. Been doing this for 2 1/2 yrs and my son is 2. Sometimes I felt like I was baby-sitting someone else’s kid when I watched him by myself. If I could’ve spent more time with him I would have. The difference between BJ and us is that he can afford time off. He’s only asking for a month jeez.

On a different note, highly unlikely, it would be awesome if kenny took a quik fight in between. That would make him a real badass in my book.

by Nokimono on Feb 24, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Something that is commonly forgotten is that Kenny just opened a gym recently, and I guarantee you that wasnt a cheap endeavor, so i could see why he needs a little money

by Dave on Feb 24, 2009 5:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

McAurthur: From that stand point, I do not disagree. In reality, none of us really know what its like to walk in another man’s shoes….

I want to see BJ at his best facing Florian at his best, so if BJ needs an extra month to ensure him fighting at the top of his game….then lets wait a month!

by john on Feb 24, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

in my opinion, BJ has already lost this fight… i think if he was pissed at the GSP and came back strong, trained hard, dieted, he would kill florian… but with this comment, hes obviously going back to his nonchalant ways and will lose this fight!

by brendan on Feb 24, 2009 7:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seems like the guy who made the comment doesn’t know that it takes to be away from children. Another 50+ hour a week guy who isn’t there to spend time with either of his children because I have to support their future and well being.

Perhaps he needs additional training time to sit on the beach, carry a few rocks under water, or maybe slouch on a chair listening to his brother for a few more months so he gets motivated to fight. I completely understand where that will help him get past Florian….all we need now is 4 months worth of trash talking to follow this. And how can I forget the 1.2 mile run as he says hi to any passerby? Yes, we are too hard on this man.

by deadgrassinyard on Feb 24, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think so brendan. It’s like in the video games, wherein the fighter saves up all his “super” and energy so he could give “one full blast” in the end[like Ryu’s super hadou-ken]…That’s how I see BJ. He’s gonna murder Kenny!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Feb 24, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree with Brendan. When GSP lost to Serra, he couldn’t get back in the gym fast enough and he wanted to fight the best available ASAP. BJ should be hell bent on redeeming himself.

by Gord on Feb 24, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Most of us are away from our kids at least 40 hrs a week. Suck it up and get in the gym and get fighting. It’s your job and you make good money doing it. I think the real problem is he has to heal from his @$$ kicking that GSP gave him. BJ was my 2nd favorite fighter in MMA, and he is just dropping down the list every day!

by LJ on Feb 24, 2009 7:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The UFC lets BJ get whatever he wants. He’s like a spoiled child. If I were a fighter in the 155 or 170 divisions I would hate BJ. The lightweight belt has been held up since May of last year. By the time BJ fights Florian, the belt will have been inactive for about 15 months.

I’d be angry as a welterweight fighter, watching this punk cut in line. By the time Alves fights GSP, it will be a year since GSP’s fight with Fitch.

The UFC knows this clown is unpredictable and they let him do whatever he wants to keep him happy.

by RealDrew on Feb 24, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you 100%. Wow, 15 inactive months for the LW belt? I wonder if Dana White is aware that it’s been that long? Who am I kidding?? Anything for BJ I guess.

by McArthur on Feb 24, 2009 12:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

by RealDrew on Feb 24, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What did he say that was inaccurate? People dogged on Sherk for the length between defenses but it wasn’t this long and was due to injury. He had a torn rotator cuff—which he fought Florian with to not delay a title fight.

by The Answer on Feb 24, 2009 1:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You all dont get it, BJ wants to fight the same time GSp is going to at UFC 100 July 11. Why shouldn’t BJ get the same time as GSP? Calling it right now, BJ wins…GSP wins…BJ goes up after GSP fight and ask Dana for another shot…

by Smity on Feb 24, 2009 4:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

UFC 100 is a big event for the UFC, and they obviously want GSP to headline it. The LW belt hasn’t been defended in a long time, so people want to see a LW title fighter sooner, rather than later.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 24, 2009 11:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Prior to the GSP fight, I don’t know anyone that would’ve picked Florian over BJ. Now, seeing BJ get dominated by someone that outweighed him by nearly 20 pounds at fight time has changed your opinion? Florian can train with GSP’s camp all he wants, it is not going to give him the strength and size difference GSP enjoyed when they fight at 155. BJ is going to dominate Florian. Is Florian that much improved since his loss to Sherk? Doubtful. And we all know how his fight went with BJ.

Hahahaha…I guess he’s scared to fight like GSP was when he wanted an extra month(Sarcasm). I understand that he may need time off because the last fight may still be in his head, which is fine in my opinion. I don’t think that asking for time after losing a mega fight like that is too much, but after this fight he needs to defend the title 3x per year. I wonder what Dana does with Penn once he finally does lose the LW belt? He seems to be more trouble than he’s worth sometimes.

It is going to take another 5 months for doctors to put BJ’s face back together after his last beating.

Not to mention they still need to surgically remove his foot from his mouth.

good one stevo, i am a gsp fan, i never disliked b.j. as a fighter or a person, after the complete bullshit that he has pulled leading up to and after their fight , i have lost all respect for him. when you call yourself god and claim that you will kill your opponent and that he is a quiter with no heart, then it is the exact opposite come “get busy time” then you make all kinds of excuses, then you disrespect the next in line at your natural weight class. in my opinion, you are a bitch, a spoiled little bitch. to all the b.j. nuthuggers. please comment with your opinions. because they mean so much to the educated fight fan who knows all the vaseline in the world would not of changed the outcome of that beatdown,

by daz on Feb 24, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Daz, I got a great idea. Let’s have BJ get another title-shot at GSP in Oct/Nov, then he can raise his daughter a little more, than Florian can wait till Mar/Apr of 2010 to get his LW title shot. That would make that brat BJ quite happy I’m sure. By then, they should’ve removed BJ’s foot from his mouth, and then the bullet from his foot.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 24, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hate to bring it back to this but BJ would not be so nonchalant about taking time off if his family wasn’t rich and he wasnt a spoiled brat. I know fighters that are starving and would jump up to fight as soon as they get cleared.

BJ should just take himself out the picture like Huerta did. At least Roger had the balls to admit his heart is not in it anymore.

I feel bad for Kenny for even though he was the definite #1 contender, still took on Stevenson and now he has to wait or possibly fight one more fight until BJ feels that he’s ready.

by bostommmajunkie on Feb 24, 2009 12:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if we’ll get a Kenny vs. Sanchez rematch now in the meantime?

This sucks!!!
Excuses again from BJ
WTF training for GSP he had for vacation
So now his telling me that training 6 hours a day he has no time for his kid? BS
Yeah i going to tell ppl who work for me You got newborn-3 months vacation
BJ needs to defend LW belt at UFC 99. Kenny Florian must be pissed

by lukasz on Feb 24, 2009 1:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

By the time BJ is ready to defend again, the junior-high kids 1 block over might have eligibility and age to challenge him for that belt. Penn is the worst Champ ever.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 24, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

does his baby daughter have a mother that doesnt like doing press or is she not in the picture?

i dont have a problem with a champion only fighting twice a year. gsp doesnt fight that often either

by COR on Feb 24, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well, he fought in December 07 then twice in 08 and then right at the beginning of 09. So it’s 4 times in 13 months and he’s probably ready to go against Alves, but I think the UFC wants him on a big card. Unfortunately, we’ll probably see less of GSP now that he’s a big name because they’ll save him for big PPV’s. Especially if his next fight after Alves is Silva, I’d be surprised to see him fight again this year.

by Shadyone33 on Feb 24, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well gsp did fight a little more in 2007, but they fought the same number of fights in 2008 and so far in 2009.

           2007 2008 2009
gsp 3 2 1
bj 1 2 1

either way you slice it, i never expect the champ to fight more than 2 maybe 3 times per year anyway.

mainly posted this for all the haters getting pissed at bj for not throwing down at ufc 99.

by COR on Feb 24, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

GSP doesn’t fight that often either? In the last 2 years, he’s had 50% more fights than BJ. And against WAAAY better competition.

I think we have another Matt Serra here. It’s easy to stay in the top ten when you never fight. 4 months is plenty of time. Take 3 months off, and train for 1. He just wants to savor his time as the 155 champ, because he knows that KenFlo is a machine now. It sucks for Florian, because he has to wait.

Penn penn penn

I wonder if kennys team will call penn a pretty hawaian

by phenomenal angel on Feb 24, 2009 1:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m not so sure its all about his daughter, I know that sounds cold but after his humiliating beat down, psychologically it must have been devestating. I think he would like to delay the fight as much as possible. If somehow kenny does beat him, I think he might give fighting up for good and go into hiding.

by nathan on Feb 24, 2009 2:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree. Spoiled, spoon fed babies don’t like being second in line. If he actually does not retire, I guarantee he gets a title shot immedietly, and wastes no time getting back in there. (Where if he re-claims the LW belt, he will retire on top.)

by GodDamnMike on Feb 24, 2009 2:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He already is on top in the lightweight div, he never lost the belt. The fight against GSP was for the WW belt. Do some research before commenting. If he was going to retire he would have done it by now while he still has the belt. On that note I hope KenFlo spanks BJ like Couture did to Tito literally.

by Bob on Feb 24, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bob, that’s not at all what I meant. I meant (hypothetically) that IF Florian takes BJ’s belt, BJ would get another title shot immediatly. I’ve done my research, thanks.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 24, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Mike has done his research. I was there.

by ftg314 on Feb 24, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Easy fight for Penn, give him all the time he needs and he’ll come back to destroy Florian. Even if his heart isn’t in it, just having to make that weight will keep him in shape and come fight night Penn is emotional no matter what.

kenny by 4 round sub rnc… this kids looked awesome of late almost unstoppable if you will. Teaching both joes a lesson on the mount and slapping huerta with his foot….lol But bj that comes in mad shape like he did in that sherk fight…. Dont know if bj can get look that good. he seems burned out… But ken flows on of my top favs so I really Hope he stops BJ.

BJ is the most overrated fighter in MMA. Never liked his attitude.

by Canadianmma on Feb 24, 2009 2:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Fathers work everywhere and all the time but they prioritize their time so they can spend time with their family. What I don’t get is that this guy trains in Hilo where he lives and I know that he doesn’t train 24/7. He can make time to spend time with his family. He also does come from a wealthy family so maybe he is not used to working… His choice to fight later puts other fighters in a bad place. BJ used to be one of my favorite fighters….

Hi, I’m BJ Penn. Some people call me the prodigy. People like myself. And I only want to fight twice a year because I’m a loudmouthed bully who thinks he’s better than everyone else around him, because that’s all I’ve ever been told, or have told myself.

by sirchokemout on Feb 24, 2009 3:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kenny is making a stack out of his TV work, hes lying if he says he is going broke. I work in TV in a tiny market and the money is GOOD. BJ is just scared after getting that ass wooping

by sirvere on Feb 24, 2009 4:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t get it, it’s one extra month why is everyone making a such a big deal out of these. All this is another chance for people call BJ out for not training, or not defending his title. No matter what he does he ends up pissing somebody off. I’m a big BJ fan, but all this greasing talk is getting out of hand, he just needs fight KenFlo and shut everyone up

by Parks1 on Feb 24, 2009 4:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Penn should just retire

by ramon on Feb 24, 2009 4:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kenny shouldn’t complain if he has taken the same amount of time after a bad loss. After Sherk he didn’t fight again for a good 6 months. He went to Thailand trained got his freak on, and came back better than ever. Give BJ a good 6 months and Kenny’s Dead!!! BJ BJ BJ!!

by ktown on Feb 24, 2009 4:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wish champions would have to defend every 4 months but if you think about it, it’s to their benefit to fight less often because they’ll get more and better sponsorships as current champion as opposed to former champ.
Although BJ doesn’t need the money so War Florian I hope he takes it.

by scissorfight on Feb 24, 2009 5:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Screw UFC 99. UFC 100 is where the cash is at and B.J knows it. Quit hatin on the dude. He’s just trying to make as much bread as possible just like the rest of us. UFC is going to be the highest purchased card ever, and he wants that PPV bonus. Can’t blame him.I hope Wand and Franklin protest too and go to 100.Yes, I am very biased cause I’ll be there.

by Josh H. on Feb 24, 2009 6:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Forget BJ, forget the baby, forget Florian, forget Dana. Only one argument stands:

You go more than 12 months without defending your belt, you lose your belt.

Florian should have to fight somebody for the title of the vacant belt at UFC 97 or 98 or 99. The new 155 champion can fight BJ when BJ and Dana want. UFC 130 in 2013 probably.

by ftg314 on Feb 24, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think everybody would love to see BJ get his ass whipped again, hopefully making him retire. And hey, since Dana created these “interim” belts I’m sure Florian could get one of those.

5/24/09 he should be STRIPPED. Its the rules, hell Sherk had to do it.

Poor BJ. No matter what he does he’ll forever be remembered for the GSP beat-down. How horrible a legacy. However, for somebody with BJ’s mouth, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

I cant really say i blame baby jay penn for waiting so long to return, seeing as how badly GSP HUMILIATED THE EYE GOUGING CHEATING PUNK-PENN!

BJ needs to step up and fight he doesnt spend every waking hour with his daughter anyway. he could easily train light for a month then turn it on hard for the last two and be in great shape.(he used to barley train) and everyody who is hating oon kenny is dumb he fights thats his JOB he wants to make money at his JOB. i would pay to seee kenny at every ppv event if i could. by the way bj is going to lose. then that title will actually be on the line once in a while. george should have fought alves when him and bj fought and kenny shouldve fought bj but bj had too much pride and thought he could stomp george. ha ha
