Bet you’re his next KO victim, you’ll give up, just like you did against Randy and Werdum. Unless you land some lucky Krokop BS, no chance, cause you’re a quitter.

I don’t count the Randy fight as giving up. Dude was fighting for the HW title against a living legend. He was choking on his own blood most of the fight. Got fight of the night honors if you remember. Werdum when he is healthy and doesn’t underestimate his oppenent is no slouch either. Him and the Tank have a rivalry and he was motivated for that fight. He crumbled Gonzaga and it did appear that Gabe quit in that fight. But as I said I don’t view the Couture fight as you did. So one fight where it appeared he caved does not show me a history of quitting. He’s had dominant performances since and has improved. I think Gonzaga is a higher level fighter and this will show in the Carwin fight. Carwin is awesome and could dominate local shows and sub level UFC guys for his entire career. But I don’t think he is ranked fighter caliber. But hey, I never thought Rashad Evans would be LHW champ. Maybe I’m not giving Shane enough credit. We shall see…

oh adam g your so wrong when it comes to your outlook on this fight. Gonzaga is a top 10 heavyweight and has been fighting top competition for awhile now. Gonzaga has great hands and kicks and tons of power. He also has excellent bjj. Carwin is big and powerful but his striking looks a little sloppy to me and i think if this fight hits the ground he in done. I see carwin getting submitted late first round.

Dam Adam G! This is a bad@ss matchup! We finally get to see if Carwin can bang with the big dogs.
by JV on Feb 23, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions
finally!!! My predict. is Gabe gasses after 1st rnd….TKO for Carwin in the 2nd. Then it’ll be Carwin/Cain
by McArthur on Feb 23, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions
McArthur, I like Carwin, but all hes shown so far is hands. Gonzaga as we know is well rounded in everything. And Im a fan of Cain also, but I dont think he wants to get in there with the big dogs yet. He keeps saying hes got a long way to go.
by JV on Feb 23, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions
agreed for the most part…he got mount in a couple fights leading to a tko but against lower tier opponents which is why I’m so interested in seeing him against a well rounded Gonzaga…good point though JV
by McArthur on Feb 23, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions
JV, Carwin got the mount against Neil Wain so basically ignore my previous post ;)
by McArthur on Feb 23, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions
If Carwin gets by Gonzaga, then a matchup against Cain would be pointless. IF they were to match up, then the winner should be the guy who fights Gonzaga. I’ve said before I think they are trying to get Cain, and a bunch of other young HWs a good record so they can get money matchups down the road with them.
I think Carwin will take this fight, but I won’t bet on it. I can see Gonzaga submitting him too.
by Synyster on Feb 23, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions
Your probably right Syn. If Carwin wins, maybe Carwin/Herring. If Gabe wins, maybe Gabe/NOG. I agree 100% with your views on “what the UFC is trying to do” but it gets real tough to have good meaningfull fights if your trying to protect younger/newer fighters for money match-ups down the line. If Carwin were to win the next logical opponent would be someone of equal or more experience/record but the benjamins always seem to get in the way
by McArthur on Feb 23, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions
I dont like the sound of Carwin/Herring. I think Herring needs a fight soon, but not against Carwin. Sounds like a humpfest to me.. Gonzo/Nog sounds very interesting though! I guess if Nog loses his next and Gonzo wins this, then we could see it.
As for Carwins next possible fight… maybe the winner of Kongo/Hardonk? (which would be Kongo). Or possible CroCop, Mir. But that is REALY far off.
Another young HW is Pat Barry. Dude has some serious kick power. Remember at 92?
by Synyster on Feb 23, 2009 2:33 PM EST up reply actions
I do…I’d like to see Barry/Kongo…Barry is K1 vet with not much exp. on the ground. I like your idea of Carwin vs Kongo/Hardonk though…
by McArthur on Feb 23, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions
Kongo is way too experienced for Barry. He would take him down and maul him with elbows. Barry should def have an easier fight 2nd time around than freaking Kongo man. Kongo is a top 10 UFC HW. A win over Barry would do nothing, just as his win over Turk did nothing.
by Synyster on Feb 23, 2009 2:48 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah if you’re giving Cain to anyone I say it should be Junior Dos Santos. Cigano looked real good against a top tier opponent and against a big opponent so lets see him against another up and comer.
by Sp00ner1234 on Feb 23, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions
I want to see Pat Berry vs. Dos Santos!
Cain should fight Hardonk if he loses to Kongo!
then
kongo vs. winner of carwin/gonzaga
AS for GOnzaga/Carwin: this fight is just too tough to call, It can end in so many different ways. BOth fighters can end it standing or on the ground.
People bASH GOnzaga cause he lost to Randy (when he was in his Prime)….and he lost to a motivated Werdum. To me, Werdum is easily a top ten Heavyweight when he is in shape and not underestimating his opponent. So I dont bash Gonzaga as much as the rest of you for those 2 losses. I still dont think we have even seen the best version of Gabe.
AS for Carwin, I would be talking out of my ass if i sat here and told you that he can/cant beat Gopnzaga. there is just no way to tell. He hasnt fought anyone yet, and this fight should be a good way of measuring where he stands among the top heavyweights.

synyster: 2 seconds ago I made a post saying I want to see Berry vs. Santos….but its in mOd. Great minds think alike!
by john on Feb 23, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
Yes sir they do.
For your Kongo vs Gonzo/Carwin, I like the idea of Gonzo fighting him, and I think he would win, which could set up Gonzo/Big Nog. I think that would be a GREAT fight. Both Great ground practitioners, but I think Gonzo has the better standup and power. What do you think JOhn?
I think Kongo would TKO Carwin, but I don’t know. Its hard to gauge Carwin aginst the top guys, and a bit easier to compare him to the lower tier guys.
by Synyster on Feb 23, 2009 3:15 PM EST up reply actions
Syny:
what you asking who has better stand up in:
Kongo vs. Gonzaga?
Kongo vs. Nog?
or Gonzaga vs. Nog?
I think Kongo is the best striker out of the 3, but I dont think he can survive on the ground with either Nog or Gonzagz!
by john on Feb 23, 2009 3:42 PM EST up reply actions
Oh yeah by far I think Kongo has the better stand up of the three. I was referring to the Gonzo/Nog matchup. Just in general, what you think about that fight.
by Synyster on Feb 23, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions
Wow! Thats a tough one! Assuming that Nog wont be in the shape he was when he fought Mir… I think Nog is probably more technical standing, but Gonzaga is more dangerous standing. on the ground, I dont think Any heavyweight besides Fedor can Mess with Nog. He outclassed Wedrum, Mir wanted NO parts of the ground….Nog has adapted his ju jitsu to mma, beautifully! Gonzaga is a legit black belt in Brazilian Ju jitsu, but Nogueira is the Grand master of MMA Ju jItsu!
Very interesting fight!
by john on Feb 23, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions
nog vs. GOnzaga analysis: assuming nog is in shape like when he fought Herring not MIr!
Nog has more technical stand up. very under rated boxer!
GOnzaga is the more devastating striker (power).
On the ground there isnt a Heavyweight on Earth (besides Fedor) who can deal with Nogueira.
Werdum is probably one of the best pure ju jitsu fighters on Earth, but Nog dominated him on the ground.
Mir was petrified of going to the ground with Nog!
Gabe is a legit ju jitsu black belt, but Nog is the Grandmaster of HW MMA Ju JItsu. He has the best adapted ju jitsu for mma out of all the heavyweights….Only Fedor is immune to it!
by john on Feb 23, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions
I think this should be fairly easy for Gonzaga if he is patient but with the power that Carwin’s got it could end brutally if they end up brawling.
If Gabe sits back and lets Carwin come to him and I’m sure he will, he will be able to pick him off and capitalise on mistakes that Carwin makes due to his inexperience and slugger style. Gabe is much more experienced and should use that to his advantage.
I imagine Carwin will want to engage early as he always does and will be frustrated if Gabe holds back as his KO average time will be dropping because of it and I’m sure he wants to remain the guy with the 1 minute average KO record and he knows the crowd will be expecting it too.
Nobody knows what Carwins cardio is like and I dont think it will be that good if he has never needed any. Maybe I’m wrong but time will tell I guess and it should be very interesting finding out.
by Ca$z on Feb 23, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions
good post Ca$Z: I wont say that I agree or disagree because I cant judge Carwin on the little footage I have seen against b level fighters…what I will say is that you probably know more about him then I do, so I appreciate the intelligent post!
by john on Feb 23, 2009 6:56 PM EST up reply actions
If Nog wa in shape when he fought Herring, then Gonzaga will beat him. There was nothing whatsoever in the Herring fight that told me that Nog could beat Gonzaga, and the beat down Sylvia was giving him their match tells me that Gonzaga would do Frank Mir on him in the first round. I know you still have hope for Nog and Shogun John, but their performances haven’t gotten any better against mediocre opponents as far as I’m concerned, and I really don’t think they will. You are going to have to face facts at some point.
by Ade on Feb 24, 2009 5:55 AM EST up reply actions
Are u Blind? Besides eating a kick across his dome, he dominated the stand up in the herring fight! HOw can this even be disputed?
So Tim got the better of him in the stand up…Big Deal, Tim gets the better of most of his opponents in the stand up. Did anyone really expect him to out strike Tim?
The Mir fight, he looked like Crap, that cant be disputed…its a fact!
I am sorry but when I take into consideration nog’s last 3 UFC fights, I can’t come to the conclusion that he is DONE!!! He isnt the monster that he was in 04, and 05, but I am not ready to say that he is done just yet!

I have to give you repect for staying devoted to your favourite fighters and still believing that they might regain some of their past glory, I doubt it, but you have definately stayed more loyal than a lot of the Chuck fans who dropped him like a hot potato. Time will tell if I am proven wrong. Anyway I’m with those who think if Kongo wins then he fights the winner of this match for a crack at the title, and I will be picking him to beat Lesner when and if they meet. Yeah I know he has no ground game, but I believe his stand up, take down defence and experience will more than make up for it. I still believe Lesner has a lot more to prove (even though thousands don’t ) before I recognise him as being the MMA god that everybody else does. Lets here it Kongo haters.

adam sometimes i like your picks but i think carwin needed a different route to the title not gonzaga i see carwin getting caught with a kick late first round, carwin needs to fight guys like cain velasquez, junior dos santos, and other up and comers not a guy who fought for the title and has a TKO over cro cop..
carwin has a future but he has never evolved he has good boxing and outstanding wrestling, reminds me of joe daddy at heavyweight he wont win
by randy murders on Feb 23, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions
as much as some people say they need to let carwin fight some more up and comers or lower tier guys as carwin is an up and comer himself the differnce between a carwin and a cain or dos santos is that carwin is already 34 years old he doesnt have the time in this game as the other guys do. I think this is a make or break fight for carwin. If he wins i could see them instantly throwing him into a title shot becuase i think a match up between carwin vs. lesnar if brock can get past mir would be huge, they are the two biggest and strongest hw in the ufc and they both are extremely athletic. But if carwin loses i dont know where he will go from there. He is already getting old for this sport unless your name is randy couture and he hasnt had any experience before this fight against top guys and i also think his ground game will be exposed in this fight. i think if he loses he will have to maybe one more chance to make it to the top before he would become a gate keeper or released.

As much as I hate the heavyweight division, I am actually looking forward to this fight the most. I just can’t pick a winner, but one thing is for sure, is that we will finally know for sure if Carwin is legit or not.
by c-war on Feb 23, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions
Sorry Adam G I don’t agree with anything you said you 13 year old little girl. And you really must be clueless if you think Gonzaga is a quitter and not a major threat in the division.
I just happned to notice your response to my post in the Sanchez / Stevenson thread. Wanker.
by Ade on Feb 24, 2009 10:40 AM EST up reply actions
Ok that was retarded.
“So Gabriel, what other sports do you play?”
This is going to be a sick fight. I don’t think Carwin has anything in his stand-up game that Gonzaga hasn’t seen or that could hurt him. Gonzaga is the more dangerous striker and the more dangerous ground fighter. However I think this fight stays standing and Gonzaga gets the 2nd rd KO.

Carwin went to coutures gym prepping randy for the brock fight, does anyone know if he is still training there?

i think he varies from that gym and greg jacksons gym with marquardt and everyone

Thanks just see carwin pushing him up against the cage and dirty boxing him just like randy

ya Randy had a great game plan vs GG….Randy’s head also shattered Gabe’s nose during his takedown which imo caused Gabe to gas…got to hand it to Randy (who finished with a broken arm) for a great game plan but I just don’t see Carwin taking Gabe down like Randy did….AHHHHH!! I’m just frustrating myself cause this fight is very hard to call especially cause I haven’t seen Carwin fight anyone like Randy/CC or Werdum
by McArthur on Feb 23, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions
yea but he is a stronger guy than randy hopefully be bullies him around and they make a good scrap of it.

I’ll say Gonzaga by sub, but I really haven’t ever seen Carwin on the ground so who’s to say?
by Amos on Feb 23, 2009 1:34 PM EST reply actions
Feel free to disagree cause I know that’s everyone’s favorite thing to do on this site, but I don’t think for a second that this fight will last the first round. I think Carwin will tko Gonzaga within the first 3:30 of the fight. Carwin is too aggressive to let the fight last very long. His aggressiveness could lead to his own defeat because that’s how MMA is, but he has proven to be very dominant and tough so far.
by sdow on Feb 23, 2009 1:40 PM EST reply actions
carwin is gonna fuck yesterday’s bathwater out of gonzaga and put a dick biscuit in his cheeseburger…and gonzaga is gonna be screaming “why why” and carwin’s gonna be like “cause your bread aint what it used to be, and besides, im the next heavyweight chamnpion of the world, you had your chance boy…now eat this biscuit”
just sayin

when did Carwin show off his standup? him knocking out a horrible standup fighter in C.Wellisch isn’t too much of an accomplishment, sure he knows how to throw a punch and has good power.. but he is definitely lacking technique and looke pretty sloppy when he’s striking..

Gonzaga 1st round TKO!.. but Carwin has a pretty good chance with his wrestling and power so anything can happen

Close real close….I was excited at the time for Houston and Bisping vs Rashad on paper wasn’t that bad…but like I said this is supposed to be Rashad vs Jackson….now we get Jardine vs Jackson? Such a let down….Jackson walks through Jardine or if he gets upset Jardine will be 1-2 contender for the title but what they promised never to fight each other = retarded! Gabe wins easily….. but who cares? take away his 1 in a million head kick and what do you have? A fat quitter!

I can’t wait to see this fight. I don’t know who’s going to win and I have to say that I want to see another Carwin TKO. I have a feeling it’ll be Gonzaga winning though.

Good Boxing and great wrestling seem to work just fine for Lesner. I like Gonzaga too ( go bulldogs! :-p ) but no way he’ll be able to take Carwin to the ground. He’ll work his leg kicks effectively until Carwin times it with a huge counter right. Carwin is going to demonstrate his nice reach and power advantage.. I think the cardio will favor Carwin too but we’ll see.
by naturalist on Feb 23, 2009 2:31 PM EST reply actions
Carwin has fought a bunch of scrubs, it’s easy to beat a dude in the first rd who has a losing record. We’ll see what happens when he fights someone that will fight back.
