UFC Quick Quote: Demian Maia deserves a title shot

demian maia ufc 83

"I’m very well prepared. For the first time I have the title in mind. I think now I deserve the title shot. I want to show Jiu-Jitsu to the world. I want to show people that you can win a fight without hurting your opponent."

-- Undefeated Brazlian jiu-jitsu wizard Demian Maia feels that he is now ready for a shot at the 185-pound crown after making quick work of Chael Sonnen at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" tonight at The O2 Arena in London, England. It was his fifth submission win inside the Octagon and fourth "Submission of the Night" performance. He just appears to be playing chess while everyone else is trying to figure out checkers. He's an absolute treat to watch and would undoubtedly give whoever is holding the belt a very tough time. Current middleweight champion Anderson Silva will first defend his belt against Thales Leites at UFC 97 in April. Then, the winner of the fight between Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson has also been promised a title shot. It appears that there may be a long line forming, but Maia is certainly deserving.

I second that- BUT here’s the thing, honestly Maia stand up stinks- i know he is training really hard with W.Silva and it will improve but be real everyone tonights fight was the first fight that he actually tried to keep it standing for a little bit and he was just getting owned- now give him to A.Silva who’s the best striker in the MW division and i see a KO very very early… UNLESS Maia can take it to the ground right away then i can see Maia winning by Submission- but in no way do i think that he is ready for Silva in a MMA match just yet. Personally i think Maia should fight either Okanami, Nat the great for next in line title shot.

by ricky on Feb 22, 2009 12:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

??? how was he getting owned? i thought it was pretty even on the feet. a slight advantage to sonnen AT BEST. i wouldn’t mind seeing him against okami or nate but i think they don’t really want to test okami before they put him against anderson because fans just really want to see silva avenge his loss and thats it. maia should be one fight away.

by ActionJackson on Feb 22, 2009 1:39 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I do think Maia needs to work quite a bit on his stand up, but I think his BJJ is the best I have ever seen in MMA. Better than Penn or anyone else. Id Silva can keep the fight standing, than just about anyone is screwed, but if Maia can get him down, I don’t think there is anyway for Silva to beat him. It could be an interesting fight to say the least.

Also, Marquardt looks freaking huge. I wonder what he truly ways come fight time. Wilson looked like he was from a dufferent class when next to Nate.

I’m really surprised people say that Maia is better on the ground than Palhares….

by JRE on Feb 22, 2009 3:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

JRE seriously??? palhares couldnt submit an old and useless jeremy horn!!!

the only ppl he has submitted are relative nobodies from brasil…. he also gasses out very easy….. i was very disappointed watching his last fight

trust me when I tell you that Maia is better on the ground than EVERYbody! I had the whole Palhares/Maia ground game debate on the phone with philQny last night….trust me when I tell you that phil kNows Ju JITSU!!! I was asking Phil about how Maia’s jits compares to other jits wizards in the UFC, and Phil always has Maia’s ground game as the best. Only match up I stumped him a little on was a ground war between Maia/Almeida (who Phil thinks the world of)…in the end he had to go with Maia.

My thoughts on Maia, is that he should be Banned from mma! hahah not serious! His gorund game is too good. unless they match him up against Jacre/almeidqa/Palhares….its not even fair.

If he wants to fight, Maia should be kicked out of mma and forced to fight in K-1…. I dont see any middleweight contenders surviving a few minutes on the ground with Maia!

I agree, Maia is definitely in a league of his own in terms of the ground game. As soon as the fight hit the ground last night, I stood up and told my friends “This fights over” … and sure enough … done like 20 seconds later

i just think maia has had easier opponents than palhares has had. Palhares would easily tap out Quarry and Herman too. And Maia would have more trouble with Henderson.

by JRE on Feb 22, 2009 11:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i think Palhares needs to work on his conditioning…. he was so gassed out against jeremy horn that he gave up his back!!! i’m just saying that if he does that against maia …. maia wont hesitate to finish

by ufcaddict on Feb 22, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

john i meant that if jason lasted as long as he did on the ground any guy with decent ju jits should be ablke to defend submissions, which is why i think marquardt would dummy maia

by Jared on Feb 22, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

your logic is correct. HOwever, I am not so sure that anyone can survive the ground against him. Fightkng Maia is like fighting Aoki…Everyone thinks they will beat them up with their hands, but they never even get touched….They drag you done and slap on a submission….Fight over!

J-mac and Nate are probably on the same level when it comes to Jits….mcFairy might be slightly better on the ground.

by john on Feb 22, 2009 4:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah sure, Maia’s stand up game is not the best, but once you get on the ground with him, top or bottom, you’re fucked.

He has demonstrated he has sick takedowns in the way he managed to take down Ed Herman, Chael Sonnen and Nate Quarry, all talented fighters with some serious wrestling pedigrees.

I say Maia vs. Marquardt next. The winner of that DEFINETLY gets a title shot.

by rhys on Feb 22, 2009 9:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

maia vs marquardt winner gets title shot in my opionion if silva wins and gsp wins of course it will be gsp vs silva hopefully.

Agreed, Otherwise I wanna see maia against Okami. Okami is super awesome at shutting down BJJ stylists but i wonder if he can do it to Maia. Intersting for those who appreciate the style matchup.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 22, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Namenot: that is a very interesting match up in deed! That match up would bore a lot of people, but I think it would be great!

Dana/joe silva should just Kick okami out of the UFC. I think the world of Yushin, but the UFC keeps unjustly not giving him a title shot that he had earned for a while now. I think the UFC makes itself look less like a sport, when they skip over deserving contenders in favor of more marketable ones. To me, Okami is one of the best middleweights out there, but if they arent going to operate like a real sport and give him the shot he deserves, then they may as well cut him!

Everytime someone other than okami gets a title shot, it cheapens the sport!

by john on Feb 22, 2009 10:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and this post is coming from someone who could care less if he ever see’s Okami fight again…Im just keepin it real!

Give the man his title shot, or cut him!

by john on Feb 22, 2009 10:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Perfectly put john, i like you believe this hurts MMA’s establishment as a sport as opposed to entertainment. That’s why i can respect LNP’ers like Linland or Antonio McKee who solely believe that they’re not here to entertain but win.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 22, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

winning should be 1st and foremost! Now that you mention Lindland, this Okami situation reminds me so much of how the UFC treated Lindland, except Mat was vocal, and no one even knows what Okami is saying, if he even speaks at all!

Not every title fight has to be the fight of the decade. I respect it more if the most deserving fighters get their shot at the titles…..instead of the ones with the biggest fan base…

by john on Feb 22, 2009 4:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

is okami maybe mute? lol

by brendan on Feb 22, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. IMO this should be the line up of fights.

April 18th 09 – AS vs Leites
Mid June – AS vs Okami (I dont think he will need that much time off after the Leites fight)
Early July – Hendo/Bisping
August – Maia/Nate
Early September – AS vs Hendo/Bisping
Mid Nov. – AS vs Maia/Nate
Superbowl Weekend ’10 – AS vs GSP!!!

Silva said he wanted to fight a lot in 09, lets make him prove it!

I’ve said this many times MAIA IS THE REAL DEAL. I seriously think A Silva would not make it out of the first round against this guy. Give Maia a title shot. That was the performance of the night. WAR MAIA

by Jason T on Feb 21, 2009 11:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Lol anderson silva is the best fighter on the planet, maia did that too chael sonnen don’t get over excited, maia hasn’t fought a top 5 middleweight yet so think before you make stupid statements like that.

by LG on Feb 22, 2009 12:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maia has RIPPED APART everyone the UFC has thrown at him. Lutter and Hendo both took Sila down fairly easily. If Silva goes anywhere near the ground against Maia he’ll be takin’ a nice long nap. Like Rogan said-this guy (Maia) is top of the food chain when it comes to Ju Jit’s. I’ll stand by my statement ANDERSON SILVA WILL NOT MAKE IT OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND AGAINST DAMIAN MAIA.

by Jason T on Feb 22, 2009 7:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

slow down there killa! Maia is one of my favorite fighter but to say Silva cant last 5 minutes with him is a joke! Taking Anderson down will not be easy for Maia. He has to be willing to strike with Anderson./…If he tries to just close the distance right away he is getting KO’ed quickly. Silva has a long reach and great footwork, which will make it hard for Maia to get in close enough to take Anderson down without getting Lit up!

by john on Feb 22, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Believe me I know Anderson is a beast but you gotta believe that at some point during rnd 1 that the fight would hit the ground and if it does I give Silva NO CHANCE on getting up. Maia has trained with Silva – He knows his strong and soft points. How come Anderson didn’t light up Lutter or Hendo? They both took him down quite easily. Maybe sayin that Silva won’t get out of the 1st rnd is a bit much but I do believe that at some point the fight would hit the ground and Anderson will be in a world of trouble.

by Jason T on Feb 22, 2009 10:46 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

there you go Jason T: now you are being realistic. Im not arguing with you. I think Maia has a better chance than most of taking Anderson’s title…I just wanted to point out that it wouldnt be as easy as your first post would suggest. Silva jits is very under rated, but Maia does it better than anyone else, so yES Maia would have a good shot at winning the title especially if he can get the fight on the ground….Just dont think it is possible for the 1st round!

by john on Feb 22, 2009 11:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Chael Sonnen went to the ground and got back up but Anderson couldnt? Anderson could submit Maia too ya know. Its not impossible. Then again Maia might hit the mat by himself.

There are a few that DESERVE title shots…..And if Bisping beats Hendo….He IN NO WAY DESERVES mentioned as top 3 yet alone a shot at the belt.

I hate the politics around the UFC and it money making. Bisping could of VERY easily been 4-4 or 5-5(close to 500) if he did nt fight 3 or 4 Elvis sinosecs. And the rest average fighter AT BEST.

So, in a YEAR period(time between Leben and Hendo fight…….the Top 5 or 6 MW that are better Bisping will have to fight each other and fight 3 times and give each other losses.

It is not that I hate Bisping, he JUST DOES NOT DESERVE a TITLE shot. People like Marquardt…there are so many I wont go any further. Ever notice that in what 8 or 9 UFC fights Bisping only faced one top fighter(and Rashad was still no where near where he is now). Bisping NEVER fought a good striker???? What a joke.

There are 3 or 4. at LEAST, in front of Bisping….And that is ONLY if Bisping can beat 3 decent MW…….Like a Franklin, Maia, and a Marquart. JOKE, Bisping needs to call out in a respectful way(like Nate Diaz did) and say HE WANTS TO PROVE himself against the top MW’s. He is more worried about protecting his record.

Records mean next to nothing, unless you are GSP(where nearly all his wins were against the TOP fighters at the time. Remember Asserio Silva………BIG TALK about his record. what was it before his 1st UFC fight? 30-1 or 29-1?? Wherer is he now? Oh yeah losing in smaller shows. I cant wait for Bisping to actually have to start fighting top fighters…..Guaranteed he will be the same as Bonnar ,he will be 4-4 or close to it…….IF he fight mid to top level fights in his next 2 years

You may want Biping to lose against Hendo, but I did not see anything for Bisping to worry about when Hendo fought Franklin. I think Bispng has a good chance, when is the last time Hendrson has looked really impressive?
You may well hate Bisping now, you will hate him even more when he beats Henderson. Bisping by descision.

by Ade on Feb 22, 2009 3:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but Bisping is not Franklin. Franklin would rape Bisping.

by naturalshadow on Feb 22, 2009 8:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry, but I am still waiting for Frankilin to prove he is still a force to be reckoned with after losing to Silva, and beatng Lutter an Hamil haven’t really done that for me. So when you say Bisping is not Franklin, that really means nothing to me. Franklin has not had any memorable or outstandig performances since losing to Silva. When he does, then I might consider him being the same Franklin that he used to be.

by Ade on Feb 23, 2009 4:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i like the idea or marquardt vs maia for next shot after hendo and bisbing. in my head i thought that maybe at ufc 100 maia or marquardt could face anderson for the strap. just to eliminate a potential challenger

by Jared on Feb 22, 2009 12:36 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree if Maia gets tangled up with silva on the ground silva is in a world of shit but I saw plenty of holes in his game. He has to get anderson in that position in the first place. Its like a contest between an extremely good striker vs the extremely good bjj specialist, silva is just more well rounded and stronger. I definitely would put my money on silva but would be rooting for Maia.

by raff on Feb 22, 2009 1:31 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The problem for Silva would be that Maia would not need to strike with him. If striking/single/double legs don’t work Maia can pull guard and sweep ANY fighter in the UFC. That’s all there is too it. I also agree that Silva would not make it out of the first round but I’m also not ready to see Maia get in there with Silva yet. He needs to face a really good striker first. A fight with Rich Franklin would be perfect and a win would put him in line for the title shot.

jacare and Maia are the best pure BJJ artists in MMA with Aoki being right there.. I thin Maia would give anderson fits on the ground and his stand up is decent enough to hang.. Maia is the man to take anderson’s belt imo.. I know I’ll get flamed but after wathcing Lutter and Hendo win the first rounds agains Silva, I think Maia can get it done

by noslo5oh on Feb 22, 2009 3:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, beating Quarry and Sonnen certainly warrants a titleshot… NOT!

Marquardt is first.

by Lester the Pimp on Feb 22, 2009 7:22 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Really? A “…NOT”? I haven’t seen one of those since 1995. Sweet.

I think Maia deserves a title shot. He is, without a doubt, one of the absolute best jiu jitsu specialists to ever compete in MMA. He also has the best shot at beating Silva, in my opinion. Add these to the fact that he’s finishing his fights in impressive fashion, and I think you have a contender, however, there is a reason that other people have been hired to make these decisions and not me: I don’t really know much about it.

by johnadnauseam on Feb 23, 2009 12:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I just don’t see why leites is getting a shot. Anderson Silva is getting older and doesn’t have enough time for this. Rematches with Okami and Nate and a fight with Maia soon is what is deserved.

by Bill Maher on Feb 22, 2009 9:54 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The way I see it, Maia is on a bit of a tear, while Marquardt is on a 2 fight win streak, and Hendo has 1 win at middleweight since his loss (should a win at 205 count towards 185 belt, even if its against former 185 champ? I don’t think so). Okami’s been out for too long to remain in that top spot and should fight Marquardt for the spot behind Maia.

by Belisarius on Feb 22, 2009 10:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well now that I think about it, Marquardt is technically on a 4-fight win streak… That Leites decision was crap, so maybe he can be ahead of Maia. Either way, Marquardt is a beast.

by Belisarius on Feb 22, 2009 10:25 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think it should be mentioned that Maia is also a really good guy. I never thought I would say it, but I really like how much respect he has for his art. I appreciate it when the guys says something along the lines of winning and not hurting his opponent.

As far as his title shot, I think it only makes sense to have him fight Nate. He has not struggled at all with any of his opponents, but they aren’t championship caliber. Nate is certainly a step up from Ed herman and Chael Sonnen

by Ethan on Feb 22, 2009 11:07 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Here’s what I think…

Give Mardquart the next shot. Deserving or not. Give Maia one more fight against someone real good. I’m thinking Ace, if he beats Franklin, put him against Silva.

by Shadyone33 on Feb 22, 2009 12:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

he needs to fight a title contender to become one…….the only title contender hes beat is nate quarry but we all saw what happens when he gets his shot lmao

by JG on Feb 22, 2009 12:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Quarry is not a title contender are you kidding me. He is a punching bag that gets schooled everytime he walks into the cage, sorry dude that must be one of the most uninformed posts I have ever read on this website, Nate Quarry thats laughable. I think Maia is the man, he should be champion already and I believe will be very soon. I think Damian, Brock or Fedor are the only ones that would even have a remote chance of beating Anderson at this point in the game.

by Spyder on Feb 22, 2009 1:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m sure that there are more than just two heavyweghts out there that can beat Silva, do you seriously think that Silva would be able take a punch from a heavyweight or stop Barnett from taking him down and pounding him out. Silva is good, but I seriously doubt he’s that good. You obviously do, I suppose that is why you call yourself Spyder.

by Ade on Feb 22, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maia has no chance of beating Silva (He barely beat J macdonald) And he was too stupid/stubborn to fight “his game”.

Champ Silva

  1. Okami
  2. Nate M
  3. soon to be #2 Henderson
  4. Maia
  5. Franklin
  6. Palhares
  7. Bisping Soon to be #9
  8. Guivera
  9. Sonnen
  10. Leben

When Wandi comes in he will be at #4… Bump everyone down a peg

  1. who the fuc* is guivera man? you mean gouveia? I have a lot of problems with your rankings men, how is Maia ranked higher than Franklin? and you mean Sonnen is way ahead of Ricardo Almeida and Patrick Cote in the 185 pounds? How the ranks should be:

Anderson Silva

  1. Dan Henderson (assuming he beats Bisping, which is not a slam dunk)
  2. 2 Nate should fight Okami first to determine who will fight the Spider next (Okami should have been given the chance rather than Leites)
  3. 3 Rich Franklin (as long as Silva is the champion, he better stay at light heavy)
  4. 4 Michael Bisping (he has improved a lot and he deserves a title shot)
  5. 5 Wanderlei Silva (if he comes down to 185)
  6. 6 Patrick Cote
  7. 7 Ricardo Almeida
  8. 8 Demian Maia
  9. 9 Rousimar Palhares
  10. Chris Leben should fight Nate Quarry to determine #10

I don’t know, Maia’s transition to that triangle was smoother than a baby’s ass, and Sonnen is no bum. I know A Silva is the superior striker and his Muay Thai is second to none, but if it goes to the ground, wow, a fight to watch.

nope id definitely rather see the winner of bisping henderson get the title shot which it has already been stated that it will be for number 1 contender…plus i reckon maia needs to face a standup fighter since hes unparalleled on the ground. if he fights NAte Marquart it will decide who gets next crack at silva ater bisping/hendeson!!!
