UFC 95 bonuses and awards for 'Sanchez vs Stevenson'

UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" from The O2 Arena in London, England, has come to a close.

The highly anticipated lightweight debut of Diego Sanchez against Joe Stevenson in the main event of the evening was perhaps the biggest story line heading into the three-hour Spike TV special.

And, according to UFC officials, the pair delivered, winning "Fight of the Night" honors for their three-round scrap. It wasn't an instant classic, but it was good enough to be singled out among the other nine bouts on the card.

It's safe to say that virtually no one expected Paulo Thiago to take home "Knockout of the Night," including himself. But that's just what the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt did against perennial welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck.

Thiago connected with a right uppercut and followed it up with a clubbing left hand that had the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) stand out seeing stars. Koscheck claimed after the fight that the stoppage was too early; however, replays showed that he was clearly in trouble.

On the flip side, Demian Maia was an early favorite to take home "Submission of the Night" because he has done it three times prior in just four fights. He delivered, outclassing Chael Sonnen with a masterfully planned triangle choke.

Overall, the fans in The O2 Arena had to be pleased with 80 percent of the fights ending early. There were several great performances and exciting finishes all night long.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 95:

Knockout of the Night — Paulo Thiago

Submission of the Night -- Demian Maia

Fight of the Night — Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson

Each fighter received $40,000 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which will more than likely not be revealed because the show took place overseas.

great fights, joe daddy is now out of the title picture for good. diego vs sherk or florian next will be awesome

by markg on Feb 21, 2009 11:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I really started to hate joe daddy after this fight. No strategy, kept smiling instead of doing things, no wrestling, same combos, trying to pump up the crowd to make it look exciting(probly so he won’t get cut). Silva needs to put him on the undercard.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 22, 2009 12:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well the majority of maniacs knew that joe was not going to win… i actually think joe thought he wern’t going to win…. with the things he was saying in pre-fight interveiws

this was a good event i particularly like marquardt vs gouveia…. good exciting fight but gouveia got schooled! marquardt was very impressive and the combos he was throwing at the end of the fight were good…. he should be fighting for the title instead of leites!!!! leites did not win that fight…. even with 2 points deducted it was a split decision…. which i thought should’ve gone in marquardt’s favour…

everyone hating on this card saying it was low standard are completely wrong… this card was the most exciting card of the year so far…

i’m impressed with
dos santos, marquardt and hardy mainly

uFCaDDICT: I totally agree man! I think Joe was defeated as soon as this fight was booked. He sounded defeated in his interviews. He DID NOT COMPETE last night! He fought as if he knew he was going to lose, so he just tried to put on a show. It was a good fight, but It was weak to see Joe defeated b4 he ever entered the cage. Props to Diego, but Joe daddy basically Laid down! gutless performance masked with some hyped up antics by JOe.

For his 1st fight at 155, Diego looked good, but I expect him to be better in his next fight

I predicted/wagered money on Willy G….Tough guy, but Nate is very impressive!

I really like Dan Hardy…I love his personality, and his footwork. He reminds me of someone I would like to party with!

Maia….what can I say, his fights shouldnt be allowed to go to the ground…Its not even fair, thats how good he is!

I called the Kos upset all week….nothing less to say about that….but that uppercut/hook combo was Nasty! THat was a legit stoppage.

Dos is impressive as hell. Opponents I would like to see him face next:
Cain Brown Pride
Winner of Hardonk/kongo

by john on Feb 22, 2009 8:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i couldn’t resist putting money on Willy G either, he had good odds…

it wasn’t that big of a win for me this time around…

main money winners for me was kelly, etim and hardy

hardy had good odds to win by knock out and i was going to put a bit on him to win via KO but i didn’t have the balls… didn’t know if he had KO power

i haven’t lost any money for 3 UFC events in a row now!!! i’m on a role

the profit i made for this event was WEAK… thats because i lost quite a bit on kos :( …. i’m never betting on anyone who is that big of a favourite again!

dos santos is young and i think they will give him a few more easy fights before he steps up in competition

uFCaddict: I got 2 rules when it comes to mma betting:

1) Never bet on a famous fighter making his Octagon debut (for example: Dennis Kang)

2) Never bet against a c-level unknown opponent (making Octagon debut), like Paulo tHiago….they often play spoiler. See HOuston vs. Jardine

i MADE SOME GOOD MONEY LAST NIGHT…CANT REALLY COMPLAIN.

Congratulations on being on a roll! My best advice would be to try not to brag about it, because thats when the gambling gods will FuK you!

About 2 years ago, I swear to you i was winning about 80-90% of my mma bets (over the span of about 12-16 months) I was making sickening amounts of money (by my standards)….I started thinking whoever I was going to bet on would win…got very cocky, and then I went through a heavy cooling off period…Reminded me of Matt Mcgouighnay in two for the money!

Enjoy your winning streak, just dont piss off the gambling gods.

Best advice I can give you when betting….U have to remain unbiased! when I was on my cocky roll….I felt like whoever I bet on would win, so I stropped betting against my favorites and was very biased in my picks….I paid the price for it, but recently I have gotten back to my winning ways….

I would say that I only lose money on about 1 out of every 4 events. Actually let me rephrase that! I only lose money on about 1 in every 4 UFC ppv’s. I find UFN events to be cash cows, because the match ups are usually one sided designed to build up young stars! I will say that I really miss ElitexC….those were some of the biggest and easiest payday’s of my life!

good luck to you and all the other mma gamblers out there!

UFCaddict: I loved Willy G, as soon as this fight was booked. HOwever we should have shied away from it, when it became the “sexy upset pick”. Generally I find that when the majority of the public all like the same underdog…the favorite ends up winning.

For example: Yoshida was the “sexy upset pick” against Koschek….that didnt work….same thing happened with Willy G last night. I should have backed away when everyone started liking him as the upset pick!

Generally I thought last night was an easy event to bet on! I had $10 on Paulo THiago. Imagine if I had the ballz to bet $100 on him….Damn it JOhn!

aS for Dos Santos….If Hardonk loses to kongo, I owuld like to see Hardonk vs. Santos! Santos hits like a mac truck! Struve was blocking most of the punches but it was like Dos didnt care. He was like F it, I will just punch right through your forearms. Very impressive power and speed in his hands. at 25 years old, training with Nog/Machida/anderson, skies the limit for this heavy hitter!

Lets talk about next opponents for Hardy!

what is a good/possible match up for hardy?

Lets see:

I would really like to see Hardy vs. Paul Taylor…That would be fight of the night material.

Other opponents for Hardy:

Lytle

paulo THiago (since he rocketed himself onto the seen by Ko’ing Kos

Maybe Marcus Davis

your thoughts?

by john on Feb 22, 2009 10:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well hardy has shown interest in fighting Marcus Davis next but maybe this would be a bad match up stylistically … because Davis has the more accomplished stand up and good boxing and he is very underestimated on the ground… he also has more experience and has been in there with some good fighters

i think a good match up for hardy would be paul taylor … it would be a very good, fast pace fight and i see hardy coming out on top

Hardy is my boy! and i believe england need more than 1 poster boy so i think building him up slow would be the best option

by ufcaddict on Feb 22, 2009 12:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

john:
just out of interest who do you think will be next for thiago?…. another contender or maybe a B-level WW?

I think he might fight a B-level fighter….. because these ppl that get brought in to fight contenders and get a shock win seem to fight a drop in class when they have their next fight

example:
houston knocks out jardine but in his second fight he faces Sakara

also

dos santos knocks out werdum but then fights a unknown Struve

if this happens again then i see thiago fighting someone like paul taylor, Liaudin or goulet

by ufcaddict on Feb 22, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think the Sanchez/Stevenson fight was all that great. No one got hurt, no one threatened a submission and nothing exciting really happened (compared to the other fights on this PPV). Never once did I feel that one of the fighters was threatened. And you guys are right, Joe Daddy was beaten even before he entered the cage.

I think the Marquardt fight should have been fight of the night and maybe even KO of the night. But Thiago KO’d Kos so that’s never a bad thing.

by DDT on Feb 22, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hardy-Davis makes a lot of sense for the next england show. Throw paulo thiago against another low profile TUFer or guy generally ranked below your chris lytles maybe a Jonathan Goulet. I think it can be justified to have an AJ-Kos fight now but i would prefer an AJ-Swick or AJ-Lytle fight. Also how about Paul Kelly-Josh Neer at 155 when he drops? Also is team Quest the new team hammerhouse- Weird thought when i saw chael and his corner.

My betting for MMA is only bet when the lines are off/don’t make sense which happens a lot especially if you watch vids. Never off of a feeling. That’s why i told you john if you remember that you can get way more value from junior in your parlay as opposed to Kos. And people kept on about how unproved Junior was as if he was fighting a gonzaga or something.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 22, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

uFC addict: Definitely a b-level fighter for thiago’s next fight.
like you pointed out, historically that is what the UFC does.

Kelly vs. Hardy is fight of the night No matter what card its on.

I give Hardy much respect. He beat my boy Gono, and I have become a fan recently.

Namenot: u r dead right about the gambling…and happily I only had Kos on 1 of my 5 parlays. Dis was on a few. I swear your post is exactly what I thought about when it was time to finalize my parlay but I couldn’t remember who posted it! so now I would like to thank you!

btw, i think you are right that Aj/kos isnt right just yet. I agree that swick and Lytle would be better options for Aj

Now that I think about it, I wouldnt mind seeing Hardy vs. Lytle either!

i gotta disagree with you guys man nate wasnt very impressive.

the finishing combo was good but his cardio sucked. he shouldve finished it alot earlier, it that was against silva he wouldve got knocked out.

Good for the new kid. The bonus was probably 4 or 5 times what he made for the fight. I LOVE when the UFC, as CLOSE AS LEGALLY AS THEY CAN attempt to have a certain fighter win(see most of Bisping’s wins and the UFC’s move into the UK) has it backfire.

Off course J-kok was a horrible sport. He was in doo doo land when he got hit. He thinks that he is never supposed to lose. He is lucky someone(almost ANY other fighter) DIDNT jump all over KOK and land 4 or 5 hospital visitting shots.

Give the man some whine with his cheese

by fightfan on Feb 22, 2009 12:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I can’t say I like or dislike Kos, but I did the think the stoppage was a bit quick. I am not saying Josh was gonna stand up and start whipping ass, he was on queer street, but he did put up his hands and legs to attempt a defense, and Paulo did not step in to finish him.

I don’t think Kos looked any worse than Nog looked when he was kicked by Herring, but since Herring didn’t finish him, they let the fight continue. Most of the stoppages tonight showed the losing fighter complaining about it being to early, but at least they were all getting finished off when the fight was stopped, so I didn’t have a problem with the rest of the fights that ended by tko.

by naturalshadow on Feb 22, 2009 2:13 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

look at Kos’s left hand when he was laying on the ground after the flash Ko…it kind of looked like he was waving the fight off when Paulo was about to attack him after the big Ko….I honestly felt that it was a good stoppage.

Nog get a little more leeway when he gets rocked because of his history. Kos hasnt earned that right yet…so it was legit! Flask Ko = a loss! We call itr a flash ko, because the ko’ed fighter recovers instantly….but its still a KO! I think it was a good job of refereeing overall!

Good refs are the ones you dont notice, and looking back on last night, I didnt notice any of them, so i will say that the ref’s did a good job!

by john on Feb 22, 2009 10:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I thought the stoppage was too early. Kos is a 10 time UFC vet and deserves the chance to be beaten to a bloody pulp. I’m not saying that is was technically a bad stoppage but I think the vets need a little less protection than the newbs.

by DDT on Feb 22, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you cant say he hasnt earned that right man, of course nog has been in the situation more times but kos got battered by alves and hung in there.

by AzCombat on Feb 23, 2009 1:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Apples and Oranges. Kos hungin the against Alves and continued to take a beating and get dominated. NOg used to get rocked, get up and then win the fight!

So NO, Kos has not earned that right!

by john on Feb 23, 2009 9:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he was seeing stars. Good stoppage. He did recover quick, but he was out when the fight was stopped. The ref did him a favor.

by LJ on Feb 22, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i thought marquardt-gouveia was more exciting than the main event

by Jared on Feb 22, 2009 12:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Exactly my thought.

by BigRedOne on Feb 22, 2009 1:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta agree with you there. I think they didn’t give it to them because Marquardt paced himself a little bit, but yea it was definitely more fun to watch.

by c-war on Feb 22, 2009 2:07 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True. Marquardt did a great job of putting away Wilson with a combo that looked like a fight in a movie. haha

by naturalshadow on Feb 22, 2009 2:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed Jared. Marquardt definitely deserves another shot at the Spider. It really bothers me that Leites is getting one since Nate beat him, but was robbed by freaking Herb Dean!

by LJ on Feb 22, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

marquardt-gouveia should have got fight of the night

diego is a monster at 55!!! i am pumped that kos-chick got flatlined.

so i wonder if Kos will start watching tapes of his opponents from now on or does he still think he doesn’t have to?

by kitsunex on Feb 22, 2009 1:51 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Kos just says that , IN CASE he loses…..then he already has an excuse ready. Then he can say I didnt watch any tapes, I wasnt prepared, yadda, yadda, yadda.

If he was half as good as his ego was big…….He would be best in the history of history

by fightfan on Feb 22, 2009 1:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Koscheck needs a nickname. There are so many hideous and ridiculisly stupid ones out there.

I think Josh KOscheCK should be referred to simply as……J – KOCK

by fightfan on Feb 22, 2009 2:00 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Demian is the best BJJ fighter I have seen in mma. What is it now, 11 wins all by submission? Plus he finishes the fights quick. Hard not to be impressed with that guy.

by naturalshadow on Feb 22, 2009 2:17 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

It is a treat to watch his BJJ! I was so impressed last night with how easily he handled Sonnen. I’d like to see him fight Rich Franklin if he’s back at 185, since (IMO) Nate deserves the next shot w/ AS.

by LJ on Feb 22, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta agree with the above posts that the Marquardt fight was better than the main event. I actually think the Paul Kelly – Rude Boy fight was the best. Any takers??? weak call for fight of the night. I notice a couple week bonuses handed out by the UFC over the past few events.

Hardy should have gotten ko of the night. And I agree that Marquardt vs. Gouveia was fight of the night. Those guys were going at each other way more than Daddy vs. Nightmare.

by UFCAddict on Feb 22, 2009 3:43 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt and Gouveia got robbed .. definitely deserved the fight of the night bonus .. the main event was pretty lack luster .. and I also agree with UFCaddict on Hardy getting the ko of the night.

by commoner on Feb 22, 2009 3:51 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

agreed

by McArthur on Feb 22, 2009 8:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

oh maaan! nate the great shoulda got knockout of the night… that whirlwind of combos starting with the flying knee was true highlight reel material and left wilson wondering what the hell just happenned. Much more impressive than the uppercut that caught kos.

by Andiesel on Feb 22, 2009 3:51 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

nate and dos santos’ k.o’s were more impressive than thiago’s. Paul Kelly’s fight should of got fight of the night too, joe daddy throwing the same combos against deigo got it?!??!

by irishlilpete on Feb 22, 2009 7:22 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Once Joe Daddy realized that he was over matched with Sanchez, I felt that he was just trying to go for the 3 rounds and get ‘FOTN’ bonus. There were too many shades of Frank Shamrock in that fight, the smiling, the kickboxing, the high fives.

by A Lynch on Feb 22, 2009 7:45 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

sub of night – Maia
KO of night – Hardy
Fight of night – nate/willy g

by McArthur on Feb 22, 2009 8:48 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i absolutely agree, nate and willy g, man that was a great fight. how often do you see someone finish a guy of thatcaliber like that?

by connor on Feb 22, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

but i guess it would be hard to decide on how to dish out the bonuses when almost every fight was a finish

by connor on Feb 22, 2009 10:29 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kelley should get fight of the night by himself, that was more onesided than BJ’s beating. It was kind of the same he just didnt bleed as much. Good to see BJ and his boys getting what they deserve, no respect and a punch/many elbows in the face.

Must have been because Paul Kelly was greasing.
